March 2012 - Cardinal Community School District
March 2012 THE CARDINAL COMET President's Award for Exceptional Performance (Principal/Faculty Involvement) Source: Scholastic Book Fairs http://www.scholastic.com/bookfairs/contest/elem_fall_11.asp Chairperson: Heather Smith ~ Eldon, IA The superintendent of the school district let it be known that the main focus of the Book Fair was “getting everyone excited about reading.” The faculty and staff of Cardinal Elementary School did just that. For the first time ever the school held a kick-off assembly, teacher sneak peek, collected One for Books donations, and made sure the number one goal was achieved: to put a book in EVERY student’s hand. At the kick-off rally, teachers participated in an Alien Dress- Up Relay, and students cheered for each team. As a reward for reaching the Book Fair goal, the principal went to each classroom and let them dress her as an alien. One class even contributed holiday lights, which she plugged in at the final assembly. True to his word, even the superintendent got involved, taking time to visit and read aloud to a classroom. The Elementary School won the Presidential Award from Scholastic. They were 1 out of 8 schools to win this award. There were also 2 Grand Prize awards. Scholastic had over 100 schools compete in the contest. It was based on how schools promoted their book fair. The Elementary won based on the participation of faculty and students in all of the different alien contests. Cardinal is the 1st school to ever place in their first year of trying. The Elementary received $500 in scholastic dollars which will be used to buy books for students. Way to go Elementary and Cardinal PTO!!!! Golden Triangle Recipients ~Submitted by Wayne Wixom Three Cardinal Students participated at the Eastern Iowa National History Bowl held at Sigourney High School on February 25. The Cardinal team consisted of Melissa Belzer, Kassandra Herrera, and Hannah Belzer. The team played in five preliminary games which were used to seed the quarter finals. In the first game CHS lost to Ottumwa B 80 to 100, which is a margin of two questions. CHS lead at halftime & the game was tied at the end of the third quarter. Pleasant Valley A was the next opponent and CHS lost 20 - 360. Pleasant Valley A went on to play in the finals. Game three saw CHS face off with Sigourney B. CHS came back to gain the lead at the end of a third quarter dominated by Herrera only to lose the game on the last question, 140 160. Davenport Central, another finalist defeated CHS 20 - 410 and Cardinal lost the final preliminary game to Pleasant Valley B 40 - 240. In the quarterfinals CHS again had to face Davenport Central, losing 40 - 440. While it was a tough day for the Comets scorewise, it was very much a learning experience. This was the first time CHS had participated in the History Bowl and the team will use the knowledge they gained today to make a stronger showing next year. History Bowl uses a unique format with each quarter consisting of different types of questions. The first quarter is all toss-up questions. Quarter two consists of toss-ups with bonus questions while quarter three is a speed round where each team has sixty seconds to answer eight questions. The final quarter has 30-20-10 questions where the point value depends on how far into the question you give the answer. Unless the underlying conditions producing the behavior are addressed, symptoms will be suppressed only to reappear later. * People are capable of change, and most people are able to find the colutions within themselves, especially when they are helped in a caring way to identify the solution. Community-based Family Team Meetings (FTM) is both a philosophy and practice strategy for helping families build on their strengths. It enables families to learn a core set of skills to deal with challenges in a way that keep family crisis from escalating. Community-based Family Team Meetings are meant to help families that are experiencing challenges and crisis before they become involved in more formal systems; child welfare or juvenile justice. Reason for a Family Team Meeting * Keeping a child safely at home * Resolving disruptive behaviors * Involving family and community in health/mental health/developmental * As a restorative justive tool * Helping students become more successful in school * Resolving concerns of suspension * Resolving concerns of expulsion * Involving family and community in treatment and recovery * Resolving court / agency / family concerns in a collaborative process * Helping a family become more self sufficient * Returning a child safely home from foster care Community-based Family Team Meetings work because: * They value and respect families * The plan fits the family - it’s homemade * They recognize that each family is unique and special For more information or to make a referral for FTM: MaryAnn Williams or Tammy Wetjen-Kesterson 51 W. Endless hours of dedication and pride go into getting ready to compete at this event. Now on to Nationals! February 23, 2012 Dear Trenton, Wow, Where to start? There’s so much I want to say, but I probably shouldn’t kill that many trees. I guess i’m writing this to let you know what a huge impact one hour of your life has made on not just one little boy, but on many, many, more people, complete strangers to you. That one hour, and your incredibly selfless act of kindness hit our hearts like an arrow piercing the bull’s-eye. Some background on Austin. I know you know a bit of this but here’s the gist. April 24, 2007 we were in a very serious car accident. Austin was 8 years old. T-boned at a high rate of speed, and the impact was where Austin was sitting in the car. Austin sustained serious injuries, including trauma to his brain. They gave him a 5% chance to live that first night. He was in a coma and on a respirator. Within a few days his progress was so great, they gave him a 95% chance of survival and moved him out of the PICU. 10 full weeks spent at the hospital in recovery. He had to relearn how to breath, swallow, eat, walk, talk. He had to be potty trained again. He had to relearn just about every physical thing you could imagine. He had a lot of “brain” things he had to relearn as well. Several years of occupational, physical, and speech therapies followed. And here he is. Still with some lingering effects (seizures for example), but he’s here. He was also diagnosed with Asperger’s (a form of autism) about 18 months ago. So we’ve had some challenges. Austin has bounced back like no other child i’ve ever know. We never expected Austin to be able to participate in activities of this nature. I was scared to death when they suggested it. But they assured me that it would be a great experience for him. They told me, “There are great people in this sport. They will be there to help him.” And here you are. What you did for Austin, during the tournament, as well as after, was nothing short of priceless. You didn’t have to go out of your way to help him. You are a seasoned archer, you could have shot your 5 arrows and been done. Showing him the ropes was great! And giving him your medal, i’ve not seen a smile on his face like that in a very long time. It made the rest of us cry, but Austin was delighted! It really boosted his confidence. I’m not sure where you’re headed in life for a career, but if it’s anything to do with working with young kids, I think you’ve found your calling. And if that’s not a career choice, I definitely think you need to work that in to your spare time because you’re a great role model and your family should be proud. You’re nothing short of a hero in our book! Tomorrow (2/24) is Austin’s 13th birthday. We know it’s a big day for you too, at the State Tournament. Not sure if we’re going to be able to be there in person or not, but you should know, you’ve got this entire family rooting for you, and many, many, strangers too! We hope you shoot well and like I told Austin, “For the next hour, yellow is your favorite color!” Good luck on Friday, and best wishes in all you do! Elementary Student’s of the Month ~Submitted by Tony Fetter Excitement is growing as we prepare for Jump Rope For Heart in the elementary school. Cardinal Elementary students have been participating in this event every two years. Elementary students in kindergarten through grade five have been working on their sponsor/pledge forms to see if they can reach their goals. At the elementary each class has a goal that equals the equivalent of $20 per class member. Natasha Lockwood 5th Grade Jazmyn Cloke 1st Grade Peyton Johnson 2nd Grade Tristan Rupe 4th Grade Dayne Owings Kindergarten Lauren Snyder 3rd Grade Elementary students received their forms and materials on or near February 22nd and are preparing for the week of March 6th when they will perform jumping activities during their PE times. Recently they have been doing jump rope activities as part of a unit in PE. All pledge forms and donations are due March 9th! Students will have the opportunity to earn gifts/prizes based on the amount of donations from their pledges/sponsors. There is an online aspect to the program also. Information regarding that is included in the student materials. Many people may wonder why Cardinal is involved in this program. This event is sponsored by the American Heart Association. Funds raised through Jump Rope For Heart are used to further research for heart related illnesses. Every dollar makes a difference! The life you save may be your own or that of someone you know. Check upcoming newsletters to see how much we will be donating to the American Heart Association! From the Desk of Elementary Principal Cindy Shepherd When planning our school calendar, we added several days to be built in, in case we needed to use them as snow make up days. Since we didn't have any snow days this year, we have a couple of days in March that we will not have school. We will not have school on March 2nd or 16th for snow make up days. We also will have no school on Monday, March 5th for Professional Development for our teachers. On March 5th, our teachers will be highlighting our 1:1 initiative with other local schools. You are invited to attend to see the many ways we are using technology everyday. Teachers from Sigourney, Tri County, and Pekin will travel to Cardinal to learn about technology and collaborate with our staff members. At the end of the month the high school FFA is sponsoring Ag Day once again. This day is always so much fun for our kids. It is a great time to showcase local farmers and other community businesses. Please contact Tom Cope at the high school or any FFA member if you are interested in helping out. The PTO spring carnival will be held in the high school building on March 31st starting at 5:00. Please come out and support our PTO. Our PTO works very hard to support our students and this is a great fundraising opportunity for them. If you are not able to attend the carnival, but would like to donate to the PTO, please call the elementary office at 652-3591. On March 29th we will be starting our Spring Book Fair. During the Fall Book Fair, our elementary earned a lot of prizes and awards. We want to do even better this time! The theme will be Hawaiian, so please look for more details to come!
