the world. However, a
stronger force than their formal education is
the learning they get in the home. Therefore
at Saints, as in many Catholic schools, we believe that parents are the “primary educator”.
Furthermore, because we value community
(Unitas), we desire to have a school environment that boasts of great parent support and
involvement.
The type of parental involvement that
makes a positive difference in student
achievement is more than "volunteering."
While supporting the school in activities such
as student retreats, the arts and athletics is
important, your concerns go deeper than this;
and so should your involvement.
As we begin the second semester, we
encourage parents to become directly
involved in their student’s academic learning
experience. Stay connected with instructors.
Ask your student to share his insights and re-

aint Augustine was converted in the year 386 in Milan. Saint John Paul II wrote an Apostolic Letter on the occasion of the 16th Centenary of his conversion, on August 28, 1986.
In the Introduction of this Letter he summarizes well the place of Augustine and how he
was considered over the years. In fact, he ties together the many popes who have been inspired by Saint Augustine.
Here is that Introduction: “...Venerable brothers and beloved Sons and Daughters: Greetings and the Apostolic Blessing!
Augustine of Hippo, who, scarcely one year after his death, was called ‘one of the best
teachers’ of the Church by my distant predecessor, St. Celestine I, has been present ever since
in the life of the Church and in the mind and culture of the whole western world.

NEW YEAR, NEW VISION
Editor’s note: Dear Friends of Saints: Last evening at the Board of Directors meeting a new
Vision Statement was adopted. In the past two years the Philosophy and Mission Effectiveness
Committee have led the charge to review and revise/rewrite the schools foundational documents (Mission, Philosophy and Vision) in advance of the 2015 Strategic Planning effort.
I am writing you and asking that you change the vision statement in any school publication/website/handbook/print material that comes from your office with the newly approved
statement. This change is effective immediately—James Horne, Principal.

ST. MARY ESCONDIDO’S “BIG BOYS” WIN
PAROCHIAL FLAG FOOTBALL CROWN, AGAIN!
By Max Mercy
San Diego Parochial Schools Network (www.sdpsn.com)
I
n 2013, the parochial championship football team from St. Mary Escondido became known as
“The Big Boys”. They were big, fast and strong. They also won the county championship. By
the time 2014 came to a close, nothing had changed. This past December, the Knights were
crowned county champions at the 17th Annual Saints Alumni-Parochial Football Championship
Tournament.
They defeated a young St. Rose of Lima team 14-0. They became the first team in 16 years
to repeat as county champions. St. Jude Academy went back to back in 1997 and 1998. The
Lancers had their opportunities, but the Knights defense stepped up every time. In the first half
both teams traded possessions.
St. Rose of Lima’s offense was led by 7th grade quarterback Angelo Peraza. During the
regular season, Peraza has speed, deceptive moves, and an arm. The Lancers also had a great
offensive line, which were known for their pulling guards on sweeps, traps, and roll outs.
Running back Luke Macie utilized these guys throughout the season scoring touchdowns at
will. Their wide receiver Michael Piancone, and tight end Sergio Bermudez were also big targets
for the Lancers. This combination of talent frustrated opponents all season. On this day, it was
the Lancers that were frustrated. They just couldn’t get their offense moving. The Knights defense
dominated the line of scrimmage, led by Godfrey Roldan and Maxwell Enriquez. Peraza had
no time to escape the intense pass rush. But, St. Rose’s defense was also stellar throughout the
game.
But then the Knights started to use their size and speed. Running back John Mascari, who
would be a thorn in St. Rose’s side all day, started chomping up large chunks of yardage. Then
quarterback Jake Stehly started throwing to his tight end, Enriquez. Deep in St. Rose territory,
Stehly handed off to Mascari and he scored the game’s first touchdown. The extra point was no
good. And at the half, St. Mary of Escondido led 6-0.
The second half was pretty much like the first half. Both teams went back and forth trading
possessions. St. Rose had numerous opportunities to score, but the Knights defense would step
it up every time. You could see the frustration setting in the faces of the Lancers. They had never
trailed a game this deep in the second half. Every time something went wrong, they would look
at their coach Mike Arney, with a look of, “What do we do now?”
St. Mary’s knew what to do. With 1:53 left in the game, the Knights had the ball at their own
20 yard line. They ran three plays. On fourth down the ball was at their 28 yard line, with 46
seconds left in the game. St. Rose had used all their time outs. All the Knights had to do was get
the first down and run out the clock. Coach Enriquez called timeout. Now it was fourth down. St.
Rose still had a chance to get the ball back. The Knights caught the Lancers by surprise. Stehly
threw deep to Mascari who caught the ball, and out ran the Lancers defense for a touchdown.
Tight end Maxwell Enriquez caught the two point conversion, and the score was 14-0. The game
was over. The “Big Boys” had done it again.
It was a disappointing loss for the Lancers. Losing to the same opponent two years in a row.
But coach Arney had a positive outlook. His team is young, and they will be back next year causing havoc in the South Bay-Center City League, and maybe get another opportunity to win that
elusive championship. For St. Mary’s, the championship is bitter sweet.
This was coach Enriquez’s last year with the Knights. But he now joins legendary St. Jude
coach, Jack McCarthy, as the only coaches to win back to back titles. Nice way to leave... on top.

Intersession 2015
INNOVATIVE EDUCATION
St. Augustine High School’s popular mid-year “third semester” was an- other success as more than 200 students participated in the program.
Called Intersession, the school has created this month-long educational opportunity to immerse students in real-life studies. The most popular facet of Intersession (now into its sixth year) is where the school places volunteer students into ongoing mentorships with businesses and
organizations throughout San Diego County.
On these pages you will see your Saintsmen “at work” in this innovative educational internship program.

“Being Socially Smart Parents”
St. Augustine H.S. Gymnasium February 25, 2015 @ 6:30 pm
Give purpose and strategy to your teen’s social media activities
…help them “Get Discovered” for success!
Social media is changing the landscape of college admissions
including athletic and academic scholarships.
This “upbeat” talk will follow the growth and evolution of social media from
a casual and seemingly private outlet for youthful self-expression to the
very public mainstream media platform it has become. The adolescents
who fueled this growth are now facing the unprecedented dilemma of being
judged by colleges, coaches and employers based on a "digital identity"
created by social media activities intended to impress friends rather than
academic and career interests.
Social Assurity teaches students how to best portray their authentic self
online and engage with the people and organizations who will help them
achieve their scholarship, academic and employment goals.
Social Assurity is the leading youth social media advisory service in the country.
Alan Katzman is the founder of Social Assurity and has lectured extensively on the
topic of social media optimization for students, has published numerous articles on
the topic, and is considered by the media as a pioneer and an authority on social
media for today's youth.

IN PRAISE OF SAINTS INTRAMURAL FOOTBALL SUPER BOWL
Photos by William Hill, Parent of Saints Alum
JUNIORS RULE—Winners of the 63rd Intramural Football Super Bowl were the 11th graders from Mr. Vladimir Bachynsky’s homeroom.
Called Hogar Infan-trill, the team is made up of (left to right): Ryan Arroyo, Ryan Dent, Steven Barrett, Tim Spencer, Peter Castagnola, Cyrus
Fullen, Faculty advisor Mr. Vladimir Bachynsky, team coach Matt Lloyd, Dom Petti, Capt. Mike Goodridge, Tanner Battikha and Nick Heid.
E
SPN once again bypassed coverage of the
63rd Saints Intramural Super Bowl Championship held last month on campus. And,
too bad for them because they missed a great
flag football game. Plus, it was a game,
where Seniors were notably absent from the
championships.
“Overall, it was an awe inspiring amazing game,” reports Deacon Richard Hardick
O.S.A., the school’s Intramural Director.
Championship action saw Captain Mike
Goodridge’s Junior squad, Hogar Infan-trill
overpower Captain Josh Heid’s Sophomores,
the Mountain Lions 48-26.
Deacon Hardick went on to praise both
teams: “The game featured many great spectacular athletic receptions along with dazzling
dynamic runs. The determination an sportsmanship show by both teams was remarkable
and certainly impressive.”
Icon sportswriter Grantland Rice couldn’t
have said it better.
Most Valuable Players for the Hogar
Infan-trill were Mike Goodridge, Nick Heid,
and Tim Spencer. Mountain Lion’s MVPs
10
were Josh Heid, Noah DiNapoli and James
Downey.
There was no shortage of kudos after
the game. Congratulations and thanks were
offered to team homeroom teachers: Mr.
Vladimir Bachysnski (first place) and Mr. Steven Granados (runner up).
Shining the spotlight where few sports reports seldom venture, Deacon Hardick offered
a big cheer and “a high degree of gratitude
to the outstanding effort of the referees who
put together and excellent game program.”
Super Bowl refs were Brandon Shaw Cedeno,
Sean Coyle, Sam Flaming and Dominic Vinti.
No one left the field unpraised. Cheers
to student coaches Matt Lloyd (winners) and
Ryan Arroyo, who has next year to fall back
on.
And, certainly not least to jump on the
pile of praise is Saints Alum Dad Mr. William
Hill, who provided excellent photographic
coverage of the Saints Super Bowl.
WOW—All-world Junior Nick Heid
proves correct the adage that if QBs
made better throws there would be fewer
spectacular catches.
SPEEDY—Steve Barrett (’15) puts on the jets as he
zips by Mountain Lion defender enroute to another
Super Bowl score.
REFS FOR FREE—Kudos to the intramural football game student referees (left
to right): Sean Coyne, Brandon Shaw-Cedeno, Sam Flaming, Dominic Vinti.
UNSTOPPABLE—Winning team captain Mike
Goodridge evades a Sophomore defender and leads
the Junior Hogar-Infan-trill to a lopsided 48-26 victory.
WAIT ‘TIL NEXT YEAR—Runners up on the Sophomore team are
(Top Row: L-R): Liam Griste, Joseph MIkolaycik, Jonathan Cox, Carlos Crawford, Jaime
Cuesta, James Downey, Sean Kelly, Josh Schroeder and homeroom teacher Mr. Steven
Granados. Lower Row (L-R): Francesco Russo, Captain Josh Heid and Noah DiNapoli.

AUGUSTINIAN HERITAGE
Continued from page 2
and the writings that embody his teachings as
an object of contemplation and imitation, and
very many Councils have often drawn copiously from his writings.
“Pope Leo XIII praised his philosophical
teachings in the Encyclical Aeterni Patris, Pius
XI made a brief synthesis of his virtues and
teachings in the Encyclical Ad salutem humani
generis, declaring that, of those who have
flourished from the beginnings of the human
race down to our own days, none—or, at
most, very few—could rank with Augustine, for
the very great acuteness of his genius, for the
richness and sublimity of his teachings, and
finally for his holiness of life and defense of
Catholic truth. “Paul VI later affirmed: ‘Indeed, over and
above the shining example he gives of the
qualities common to all the Fathers, it may be
said that all the thought-currents of the past
meet in his works and form the source which
provides the whole doctrinal tradition of succeeding ages.’"
“I too have added my voice to those of
my predecessors, when I expressed my strong
desire "that his philosophical, theological and
spiritual doctrine be studied and spread, so
that he may continue...his teaching in the
Church, a humble but at the same time enlightened teaching which speaks above all of
Christ and love." On another occasion, I urged
in particular the spiritual sons of this great
saint "to keep the fascination of St. Augustine
alive and attractive even in modern society." “This is an excellent ideal that must fire us
with enthusiasm, because the exact and heartfelt knowledge of his life awakens the thirst
for God, the attraction of Christ, the love for
wisdom and truth, the need for grace, prayer,
virtue, fraternal charity, and the yearning for
eternal happiness.
“I am very happy, accordingly, that the
propitious circumstance of the sixteenth centenary of his conversion and baptism offers
me the opportunity to evoke his brilliant figure
once again. This commemoration will be at the
same time a thanksgiving to God for the gift
that He has made to the Church and through
her to the whole human race, with this wonderful conversion.
“It will also be a very fitting occasion to
recall to all that this convert, when he had
become a bishop, was a marvelous example
to pastors in his intrepid defense of the true
faith, or, as he would say, of the "virginity" of
the faith. He was likewise the genius who constructed a philosophy that can truly be called
Christian because of its harmony with the
faith, and a tireless promoter of spiritual and
religious perfection.”

Current evidence shows that when parents
are meaningfully involved in their student's
education, scholastic achievement can greatly
improve. According to the book, The Evidence
Continues to Grow by Anne Henderson, the
positive impact of parental involvement "is
beyond dispute".
