The rewards of prison volunteering are many. “Facilitating
Toastmasters in prisons is the
most powerful volunteer work I

their progress, hope and commitment to self-improvement,
against all odds,” said Susan
Tordella, a prison volunteer
since 2008.
Volunteers must pass a criminal background check and commit to attend one meeting a

Spanish speaking volunteers are

to learn about Toastmasters programs at 14 correctional institutions in Massachusetts and
Rhode Island. See more at www.
toastmasters.org.
Prison Toastmasters programs
are facilitated by volunteers,
under staff supervision. Inmates
learn skills to prepare them for
reentry. Toastmasters emphasizes public speaking, leadership,
critical thinking, planning, commitment, self-confidence, selfesteem, teamwork and the art of
influencing others. Some 92% of
inmates leave prison, when such
skills are useful.
Toastmasters is an international self-help movement that
empowers people through public speaking, teamwork, leadership and personal growth by
following a set format of prepared speeches, extemporaneous speaking and evaluations.
Nearly 300,000 members belong
to 13,500 clubs in 122 countries.
There are Toastmasters programs
in 14 correctional facilities in
Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Recognize And
Prevent A Severe
Allergic Reaction
Most people know someone who is allergic to a bee
sting, penicillin, or some type of
food. What many people don’t
know is that these allergic reactions can be fatal. “Food allergies are increasingly common,
especially among children, and

Action Unlimited
Jill Robbins, cookbook author
and founder/CEO of HomeFree
Treats, will share information
about allergen-free baking,
understanding product labels and
manufacturing practices, and an
insider’s view of progress within the food industry in offering
safer food products for people
with food allergies at the MetroNorthwest Asthma & Allergy
Educational Support Group on
Monday, November 18 at 6:45
p.m. at the Children’s Hospital/
Beth Israel Medical Care Center,
482 Bedford St., Lexington. The

“As a mom, and a clinical psychologist, I realize how
important it is for kids with food
allergies and sensitivities to feel
included at social occasions,
where a sweet treat is often part
of the fun,” says Robbins. “I created HomeFree® bakery, with
a line of delicious, wholesome
cookies and cakes, as well as a
cookbook full of easy to make
allergy friendly recipes, so that
people with food allergies and
other special dietary needs can
enjoy treats along with everyone
else.”

Today is our birthday! Action Unlimited is 43 years old!
November 8, 1970 is the date of our very first paper. It is
always a time to reminisce. I remember my father helping
build out the boards for laying out the paper in our Maynard office on Nason Street. It was very difficult to leave them
behind when we moved to West Concord to a bigger office.
He did such a great job.
I remember some of our first advertisers who are really
responsible for Action Unlimited’s success. Sumner from
Maynard Outdoor Store was instrumental in getting the
paper started. He ran a full page in our paper each week.
Now, his daughter, Amy carries on the traditions he began.
Another supporter was George from Maynard Market. He
ran a ½ page every week until his store closed almost 30 years
later. Pat Forsyth ran a ½ page in the real estate section. He
struggled to gather all the information from his customers
because there were no faxes or internet in those days. Everything was done with pencil and paper. Acton Concord Chevrolet, under the ownership of Sid Laffin, took the first front
cover and now the tradition continues as Colonial Chevrolet.
I have a lot to be thankful for as we approach the
Thanksgiving holiday in just a few weeks. So many people
have helped make Action Unlimited successful. Barbara
B. has worked for me for over 40 years and Pam K just
celebrated 31 years at Action this week! Both have supported
me in so many ways throughout the years. Other employees do such a great job and help make Action what it is today. Thank you Joe, Barbara L, Jean A, Pam B, Claire, Leslie,
June, Nahid, Karl, Phil, Sarah, and all for your dedication to
making Action a success.
But, most of all, thank you READERS! Without your
support, there would be no reason to continue on. A lot of
changes have occurred over the years but one thing has not
changed: the need for your support. Your support of Action
and the advertisers who run in our paper each week make a
difference. It is unusual for a business to continue under one
ownership for 43 years. It only happens because you continue
to make purchases from our advertisers and let them know
that you love Action. You take the “Support our advertisers”
that we run in our paper quite literally.
Our newest product is the American made, locally sold product that we call a “Wish book”. Be sure and look for this year’s
Wish book at participating merchants in two weeks. In it are
local vendors selling American made products. We have a
local bank, Marlboro Savings, sponsoring the book and a
local grocer, Roche Brothers, helping us distribute it. By
purchasing from our local merchants you help the local
economy. Money spent with local stores stays in the area.
Thank you for helping us continue to carry on the tradition
of LOCAL and for supporting this paper with your purchases.
Action appreciates it and I know our advertisers do.

Speaker To Discuss
The Pequot Massacre
Of 1637
“The Massacre at Mystic Fort”
(in Connecticut) will be the subject of a Westborough Historical
Society program on Mon., Nov.
18 at 7 p.m. The Pequot massacre of 1637 was one of the
most significant events of the
Colonial period, serving as an
ignition point and setting a standard for the countless tragic
Native- and European-American
conflicts that followed. Join Dr.
Elizabeth Hall as she brings to
life the compelling story of the
Pequot people and the massacre
at Mystic Fort, weaving in highlights of current archaeological
investigations, Massachusetts
Bay Colony and tribal involvement, historical descriptions of
notable players, Indian spirituality, and the impact of European
migration on New England tribal
nations. A prelude of live music
performed on Native-American
flute will set the mood for the
evening. The event -- which is
free and open to the public -will be held at Sibley House, 13
Parkman Street.

Youth Stepping Up
As Environmental
Ambassadors
(NAPSI)—When it comes to
protecting the environment, the
younger generation’s involvement is sometimes limited to
recycling paper and picking up
trash. At 4-H, however, youth
are tapping into their math, science, engineering and leadership
skills to make a positive impact
on their environment.
Birch Run High School in
Saginaw County, Mich., was
paying to remove the used cooking oil from the cafeteria without
any thought as to how it could
be reused.
Five teens in the school’s 4-H
Club came up with a plan to collect the used cooking oil and turn
it into bio-diesel fuel that could
run some of their school buses.
The community joined in by
donating its used cooking oil and
the program now has 2,500 gallons of used vegetable oil to turn
into bio-diesel fuel.
In San Leandro, Calif., another group of 4-H’ers decided to
reduce its community’s environmental footprint. Californians
use hundreds of thousands of
tons of polystyrene each year for
packaging food, which accounts
for a large percentage of the litter
recovered from storm drains.
By educating restaurants, consumers and public officials about
the negative effects of using
non-biodegradable plastics, the
4-H’ers convinced the community to use alternative products.
Across the country in Oxford
County, Maine, 200 students
at the 4-H Camp & Learning
Center are building underwater robots to identify milfoil—a
weedlike substance that grows
in fresh water. As an invasive
species in the region’s 11 lakes
and ponds, milfoil can prevent
fishing and swimming, and contaminates clean drinking water.
The 4-H’ers use a video camera and GPS technology to identify the milfoil, so they can deal
with the problem.
These 4-H’ers also do their
part to educate the public about
the environmental dangers of not
cleaning off boats properly-the
leading cause of milfoil buildup.
According to The 4-H Study
of Positive Youth Development,
conducted by Tufts University,
compared to their peers, youth
in 4-H are nearly two times more
likely to plan to go to college, are
three times more likely to contribute to their communities, and
are more likely to pursue studies
or a career in science, engineering or computer technology.
4-H’s positive youth development programs are developed by
the nation’s 111 land-grant universities, and provide young people with first-hand experiences in
learning how to limit humanity’s
impact on the environment. By
taking part, youth are prepared
to make a difference. For more
information, visit www.4-h.org.

Myths About
Diabetes: Needles Hurt
(NAPSI)—New needle innovations are helping patients
with diabetes more comfortably
inject insulin, helping dispel the
myth that injections are painful. According to the American
Diabetes Association, diabetes
affects 25.8 million Americans.
Type 1 diabetes can occur at any
age but is often diagnosed in
children, teens or young adults.
Type 2 most often occurs in
adulthood. Treatment options
can include diet, exercise and
medication that may require multiple injections a day, such as
insulin.
While millions of patients
inject insulin every day, many
people may not know that new,
shorter needles can help make
saturday, november 9, 2013
injecting more comfortable. New
pen needles as short as 4mm with
a thinner gauge and a modified
needle tip have been designed
and shown to improve the comfort of injections. These shorter
needles also lower the chance
of accidentally injecting insulin into the muscle, which can
be painful. Needles as short as
4mm are effective for children as
well as adult patients, even those
with a high body mass index
(BMI). Longer needles could
go too deep into the patient’s
body and actually deliver insulin
into the muscle, where absorption could be unpredictable and
potentially create unanticipated
hypoglycemic (low blood sugar)
conditions.
Another benefit of using a
4mm needle is that most patients
don’t have to “pinch up” the skin
when injecting, making it possible to use only one hand. With
a one-handed technique, patients
can be more discreet when injecting and also rotate to more injection sites—such as the upper arm
and buttocks—to avoid getting
bumps (called “lipos”) under the
skin. The American Association
of Diabetes Educators recommends patients select the shortest
needle possible.
Continued needle advancements can help ease the hesitation or fear that patients might
feel about injecting. If you or
a loved one is new to injection
therapy, you may wish to review
shorter needle options with your
healthcare professional. For
patients who need to inject multiple times a day and are looking to improve comfort, consider
switching to a shorter needle
length with a thinner gauge. For
more information, visit www.

fresh, healthy herbs:
1. Select the right container.
The type and size of your container are important. The container options are endless, so feel
free to be creative. Depending
on how many plants you want
to grow, it will need to be large
enough so that root growth is
not restricted. Just remember that
adequate drainage is your key to
success.
2. Start with seeds or existing
plants. There are a few options to
get your container garden started, and it’s simpler than you may
think to get your plants growing.
You can either plant from seed
or cut a portion of your outdoor
plants. Seeds generally germinate within a week, and many
outdoor plants will rebound
quickly by simply removing twothirds of their top growth.
3. Choose a good growing
medium. Whether you choose
to use a commercially prepared
artificial mix or a potting soil
mixture, it’s important that the
content is nutrient-rich. Growing
plants require nutrients to reach
their peak, and the correct balance may not be found in your
local soil.
4. Give it adequate sunlight.
Your container garden needs at
least five hours of direct sunlight. If window lighting is not an
option, fluorescent lighting can
also work well.
5. Feed and water regular-
ly to keep plants healthy and
happy. Container plants can
often run out of food quickly
since their roots can’t expand to
find nutrients. At planting time,
mix controlled-release fertilizer
granules into the soil mixture,
or apply a diluted liquid fertilizer with every other watering.
But remember that nutrient needs
vary with plants, so check each
herb’s requirement. And don’t
forget about water; if the soil
feels dry, it’s time to water.

Fun By The Numbers
Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you
hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your
sudoku savvy to the test!
Here’s How It Works:
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down
into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers
1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each
number can appear only once in each row, column and
box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers
will appear by using the numeric clues already provided
in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it
gets to solve the puzzle!

Grilled Cheese 101
(NAPSI)—A few simple
tricks can help a popular comfort food—the grilled cheese
sandwich—come out great every
time.
For example, brush the tops
of your bread with ultrasoft or
melted, unsalted butter for even
cooking. Using quality bread is
important. You should shred or
grate cheese when it’s cold (easier to handle) but cooking cheese
at room temperature is best for
quick melting. A couple of super
meltable cheeses that are available presliced are Jarlsberg and
Jarlsberg Lite. After the first
“flip,” press with a tool, like a
spatula, heatproof plate or cake
pan to get that crispy, goldenbrown crust. Always cook on
medium-low heat and use a nonstick skillet. Want to use less butter? Toastabags are a neat new
alternative.
Visit www.jarlsbergusa.com
for more information.
Meanwhile, here are some
gooey-delicious combinations to
consider:
• Jarlsberg, ham, pickles and
mustard on whole wheat or rye.
• Fresh Chevrai (a soft, unripened goat cheese) and thin-sliced
beets (roasted in balsamic vinegar and honey) on multi-grain
bread.
• Jarlsberg BLT on country
white bread.
• Brie (such as Woolwich
Dairy, a triple crème goat brie)
with cooked crumbled prosciutto
and fig jam, on soft sourdough.
• Jarlsberg, pastrami and sauerkraut (or coleslaw) on rye.
Whether you try these innovative versions or stick to the
classics, this delicious dish is
one way to get almost anyone to
smile and say “cheese.”

Say Sayonara to
Stick Built
(NewsUSA) - A podiatrist’s
office is probably the last place
you’d think of when imagining an eye-catching structure
that pulls people off the street
for a closer look. In Raleigh,
N.C., however, Foot and Ankle
Associates has a truly unique
look for a medical facility. With
an airy, intricate design, the
building reaps more than just
aesthetic benefits -; thanks to
its primary building material,
concrete masonry.
“The building is so intriguing that it actually stops traffic.
They don’t know it’s a doctor’s
office, and they pull in to see
what it is,” said Dr. Clarence
Stewart, the building’s owner.
Surprisingly, the building
might never have gotten its
unique look if not for the limitations placed on the design by
topography and a tight budget.
From intricate, raised patios, to
useful retaining walls, concrete
masonry has become one of the
most versatile building materials
on the market today. It’s simplicity, durability and strength
have begun to win over homeowners and builders nationally
who would otherwise build with
wood and other materials.
“My clients are savvy. They
know what they want. It’s usually aesthetics, energy efficiency and mold protection -;
the other things are byproducts.
They’ve usually owned three to
four homes, and consider the
masonry home as their last,”
said Pat McDonell, a contractor
who builds homes in Hudson,
Wis.
While concrete masonry
homes are slightly more costly
to build than traditional woodframe homes, several factors
help to mitigate this initially
higher investment, giving concrete building products lower
long-term costs. Using concrete
masonry can lower heating
costs up to 75 percent and save
homeowners hundreds of dollars
every year by preventing wind
damage and protecting against
mold growth.
“I’d love to build masonry
structures for other general contractors. I am confident that the
more builders and designers
who are exposed to the beauty
and benefits of masonry homes,
the more success we’ll have,”
McDonell said.

Dealing With Dust
(NAPSI)—The American
College of Allergy, Asthma &
Immunology has some advice
for the millions of Americans
for whom “allergy season”
never ends: Reducing the dust
in your home can make a big
difference. Most indoor environments, it says, actually trap
airborne allergens, where they
can pose a risk to respiratory
health.
If you suspect indoor allergies
are causing your symptoms, see
your doctor. You can limit your
exposure.
Tiny Particles=Big Problem
House dust is present in even
the cleanest homes. It’s stirred
up whenever you vacuum, walk
on a carpet or make the bed.
In addition, forced-air heating
systems tend to blow dust into
the air.
A Solution
Fortunately, frequently washing your linens and cleaning air
ducts can go a long way toward
reducing the amount of allergens in the air.
pg. 13
To help, the National Air
Duct Cleaners Association
(NADCA) recommends that airhandler units be inspected at
least annually and cleaned as
needed. When hiring an HVAC
inspection, maintenance and
restoration contractor, be sure
the company is a member of
NADCA.

Cool Facts About
Frozen Foods
(NAPSI)—Here’s cool news
for when you want to make a
nutritious meal fast: The Food
and Drug Administration says
there’s virtually no nutritional
difference between fresh and
frozen fruits and vegetables,
explains Supermarket Guru Phil
Lempert. A well-known food
industry expert, Lempert holds
the reputation as the premier
forecaster of consumer behavior within the world of food.
Lempert reports that frozen fruits
and vegetables are typically harvested and flash frozen, leaving
them more nutrient dense than
their fresh fruit and vegetable
counterparts, which can spend as
much as half of their peak freshness period in distribution.
The Tasty Truth
More good news: Many of
the ideas people maintain about
frozen food are merely myths.
Here’s a look at a few—and at
the facts:
Myth: Frozen meals are heavily processed and not made with
real ingredients.
Truth: Frozen meals can give
families access to real, highquality ingredients year-round.
These meals start with simple
and fresh- tasting ingredients
including al dente pastas, crisp
vegetables and tender meats.
Myth: Frozen meals are not
good for people watching their
weight or trying to eat healthy.
Truth: Frozen meals provide
built-in portion control and are a
tasty alternative to meal replacements such as bars and shakes.
For example, you can find comfort food classics that taste like
the real thing, often with fewer
calories.
Myth: Frozen foods are tasteless and uninspired.
Truth: There are many
chef-created options with frozen meals, such as a Top Chef
Chicken
Margherita
with
Balsamic, made with tender
chicken, al dente pasta and roasted garlic from Healthy Choice,
one of the pioneers of delicious,
health-minded food. It’s simple
food made from only the best
ingredients including crunchy
apples, crisp vegetables, tender
meats and pasta. These meals
contain healthy alternatives that
taste delicious: olive oil instead
of butter; slow-simmered sauces
instead of heavy cream; a splash
of red wine for a punch of flavor
instead of added salt.
Another option can be a hearty
pot pie filled with tender meat
and savory vegetables from
Marie Callender’s, whose greattasting dishes are always made
from quality ingredients.
Personalize Your Frozen Meal
Frozen meals are an inexpensive and convenient solution to
make meals taste like they are
made from scratch. Not only
that, frozen meals can be customized by adding ingredients
or sides. The chefs at ConAgra
Foods suggest adding sun-dried
tomatoes to Marie Callender’s
Chicken & Broccoli Alfredo
Bake for complementary flavor. If you’re looking to kick
up the heat, top Healthy Choice
Chicken Enchilada Bake with a
sliced jalapeño.
Expert’s Opinion
Whether you have a taste
for international fare such as
Portabella Parmesan Risotto or
an everyday favorite such as
Macaroni and Cheese, the chefs
at ConAgra Foods—who create
single-serve and multiserve frozen entrées for Healthy Choice,
Marie Callender’s, Bertolli
and P.F. Chang’s Home Menu
meals—can provide what you
want. No matter your mood,
craving or preference, there are
many options with frozen meals.
“Fewer meals are made from
scratch these days compared
to a generation ago and many
Americans are spending less
time in the kitchen,” ConAgra
Foods Spokesperson Lempert
added. There is a myth that home
cooked is always more nutritious
than frozen but many frozen
foods are portion controlled, start
with fresh-tasting ingredients and
have saturated fat and sodium
levels that are much the same as
their home-cooked counterparts,
if not lower.” Therefore, you
can feel free to feed your family
frozen meals, knowing they’re
wholesome as well as quick and
easy to prepare.

Every fall, Chef Love takes inspiration from the end of summer

are the inspiration for his Grilled

include Hellmann’s® Creamy
Balsamic Mayonnaise Dressing,
which combines the rich, great
taste of Hellmann’s® that you love
with a touch of sweet, aged balsamic vinegar.

the whole family over for a relaxing Sunday afternoon, these simple
recipes are perfect for any occasion. Pair the dishes with clean

Overcome Your
Exercise Barriers
As sunny weather beckons,
many Americans dust off their
jump ropes, soccer balls and
sports equipment. Some prepare
for the beach. On the other hand,
many others are inactive. If you
are one of those who struggle to
fit in exercise know that you can
find ways to overcome your barriers to better health.
The Weight-control Information Network (WIN), an information service of the National
Institute of Diabetes and
Digestive and Kidney Diseases
(NIDDK) and the National
Institutes of Health (NIH), offers
tips for overcoming the follow-
saturday, november 9, 2013
ing barriers.
“I am too busy.” No matter
how busy you are, you can find
ways to fit activity into your
daily life. For example, designate
one part of each day for physical
activity. You can also schedule
exercise in short bouts, such as
taking 15-minute walks in the
morning, at lunch, in the afternoon and after dinner.
Try performing active chores.
Examples include gardening,
washing cars, mowing grass and
vacuuming. You can also get
your family involved by taking
family walks around your neighborhood and visiting community
parks and recreation centers on
weekends.
“I am too tired.” At the end
of a long day, doing anything
but vegging in front of the television might seem downright
Herculean. But here’s a secret:
exercise gives you more energy.
Going for a jog or brisk walk
might help you feel less tired.
Exercise also reduces stress, so a
gentle walk can help you unwind
after work. Finally, make exercise fun! If jogging on a treadmill
sounds like torture, turn on your
radio or portable music device
and dance to your favorite song.
“I don’t feel like physical
activity.” How many times have
you said that you just don’t like
exercise? To bring more joy to
physical activity, ask a friend to
be your exercise buddy – you can
motivate each other and socialize
at the same time. Also, choose
an activity that you like, such as
walking. You are more likely to
stick with it. You can visit with
a friend or take in the scenery as
you walk.
