What I don’t believe is how quickly this year is going!! Welcome to the June issue of The Scrumpy now into it’s 8th year, still shouting KEEP MUSIC LIVE and in many parts of the UK its all alive and well. Sadly in others, with so many pubs and venues closing down or just stopping live music to trim costs, many acts, bands or solo’s are struggling to find gigs, and dropping their nightly rates, but are still finding it hard to find work. So this recession keeps biting and reading the news headlines the available money to spent in our pockets will shrink even more due to increased fuel costs, home heating bills and to top it all the increase we are told in food bills!! So it’s all doom and gloom on many fronts, but the good news is musicians keep reinventing themselves, this summer see’s some good festivals, see page 20, a lot of new original bands are appearing, so it’s not all doom!! If the weather keeps good then we should be in for a good live music summer, and most live music fans will still find the money to get out and enjoy themselves', by getting out to enjoy live music, you won’t need to decorate, garden and waste your money on something that can be done next year, have a good month...................... And enjoy! 2 © The Scrumpy 2011 FREE EVERY MONTH JUNE ‘11 ‘The Scrumpy’ 3 issue 3 Vol 8 © The Scrumpy 2011 FREE EVERY MONTH ‘The Scrumpy’ Thursday 2nd Delta Echoes @The Retreat, Reading Friday 3rd Black Rose @The Crown, Maidenhead Back Beat 65 @The Rising Sun,Reading Blaze @The Rising Sun, Slough Saturday 4th DeLorean @The Bier Keller, Bracknell Frankie the Fish @Prince of Wales,Caversham Vinyl Vandels @Ibex Inn, Chaddleworth Blues & Tunes @Noctors, Maidenhead !Daft! @Smokey Joe’s, Maidenhead Mike Cooper @South Street Arts, Reading Purple Zeppelins @Rose & Crown,Sandhurst Subway Monkeys @The Rising Sun, Slough Beaver @The Plough, Thatcham Sunday 5th Elaine Samuel's @ Portland Arms,Maidenhead Fairy Picks @The Redan, Wokingham Wednesday 8th The Retro's @The Cricketers, Maidenhead Friday 10th Whoz Drivin’ @The Bell, Maidenhead Atonga Zimbatrio @South Street Arts, Reading Radar Love @ O’Neill’s, Reading Burn @The Rising Sun, Slough Saturday 11th Kindred Spirit @The Bridge, Bracknell Fully Twisted @Shepherds Hut, Eaton Wick Time Kites @Noctors, Maidenhead Replicant @Rose & Crown, Maidenhead Playhouse @The Rising Sun, Slough The Stralospheres @Old Ticket Hall, Windsor Blues & Tunes @Duke of Connaught,Windsor Kate Axten @The Queen, Windsor This Way Up @The Winkfield, Winkfield The Fairy Picks @Dog & Duck, Wokingham Wednesday 15th Shine @ Smokey Joe’s, Maidenhead Thursday 16th Codey @The Prince, Crowthorne Eddie Martin @South Street Arts, Reading Full Twisted @The Redan, Wokingham Friday 17th Shine @ Smokey Joe’s, Maidenhead The Ukrainians @ South Street Arts, Reading Juicy Lucy @The Rising Sun, Reading New Foundations @Jolly Farmer, Sandhurst Gary Roman @Duke of York, Windsor Saturday 18th Solace @Party in the Place, Binfield, nr Bracknell JUNE ‘11 issue 3 Vol 8 Time Kites @The Silver Birch, Bracknell Spiderwire @The Prince of Wales,Caversham Tail Gater @The Rising Sun, Slough !Daft! @The Old Ticket Hall, Windsor Thursday 23rd Greg Winters @The Prince, Crowthorne Friday 24th Blue Rock @The Bell, Maidenhead In Too Deep @The Rising Sun, Slough The Deps @Old Ticket Hall, Windsor Saturday 25th In Too Deep @The Royal Oak, Bracknell Resoundz @The Bridge, Bracknell Free Z Company @Prince of Wales,Caversham Out of Order @The Barley Mow, Maidenhead Southern Rogues @Noctors, Maidenhead White Sunday @ South Street Arts, Reading Metalingus @The Rising Sun, Slough Jukes Blues @The Crown Inn, Theale Burn @The Hope & Anchor, Wokingham Thursday 30th Vetiver + Marques Toliver + Horton’s Opulent Oog @ The South Street Arts, Reading Repeat and Regular Sundays Readifolk @The R. One thing is certain they are still as busy as ever, even being the support band to top names like The Wurzels. Well worth checking out - see them in June @The Wimborne Folk Festival on the 17th @The Ropemakers, Bridport on the 18th @The Harry Paye Day, Poole playing on the bandstand from about 3pm. For more info go to www.skimmityhitchers.com ******************************************** Zider’ was released. This first record sold over 100,000 copies and appearances followed on a number of T V shows. Further records were released and their popularity and following grew covering the whole country and beyond. Sadly Adge Cutler was killed in a road accident in May 1974, the Wurzels at that stage decided to continue on their own. This later resulted in their first major hit ‘Combine Harvester’ being the most remembered of their release’s, still a firm favourite today. The B-side ‘Blackbird’ was a No 1 in Canada (makes you think, don it!) for more information go to - www.thewurzels.com HORIZONTAL The prolific folk singer and fiddle player Eliza Carthy is out and about showcasing material for her new album ‘Neptune’. Powerful, vital and exuberant, rhythms absorbed from her travels around the globe, characterize this highly original self-penned music. With her new band, including Emma Smith from Gorillaz, she delivers a more up tempo show than ever before. www.eliza-carthy.com ********************************************* The legends of the west country ‘The Wurzels’, still treading the boards will be out and about this summer. The story started back in the summer of 1966 when Adge Cutler visited the office of John Miles with little more than a few songs he had written. A recording contract was negotiated with EMI and in the autumn of 1966 a single ‘Drink Up Thy JUNE ‘11 issue 3 Vol 8 5 MUSIC STUDIOS * professional multi track recording studio * 64 channel large format Mixing desk * Ton’s of equipment and mic’s VISIT OUR WEB SITE @ www.horizontalmusic.co.uk or phone - the greats of jazz, blues and folk including Stephane Grappelli, Long John Baldrey and Show of Hands have played. The Friday night folk club was intending to take a break for the summer, there are two events - one in June and the other in July that are certain to attract a wide audience. He went on to advice Rick to use the piano to compose his music. Rick also over the years had played in various bands before joining his first professional band ‘The Strawbs’ in 1969 playing on three of their albums. He then joined ‘Yes’ in 1971 leaving the group in 1974 to work on his solo career, he returned in 1976 leaving again in 1980. With a ticket price of just £8.50, all of which was donated by The George Hotel to the charity, the grand total of £246.18 was raised. The evening was jointly organised by Cathy Doel, proprietor of The George Hotel and local artist and musician Ian Hudson. Ian Hudson and his many musical friends put on a fantastic show with everyone enjoying the atmosphere, food and excellent music all in aid of a really good cause. Cathy says; “The idea for this concert evolved from our Acoustic Music Nights, which Ian hosts the first Saturday of the month. These events are always popular with musicians and audiences alike and are a showcase for the brilliant musical talent we have right here in North Devon.” Great music, great food and great company - a definite recipe for success!! ****************************************************** Answers to this months quiz (1) Jim Reeves (2) Marvin Gaye (3) Apple (4) The Simpson’s (5) The Springfield’s JUNE ‘11 issue 3 Vol 8 (6) Elvis Presley (7) The Street (8) Stardust (9) Thunderbirds (10) The Beach Boys (11) Carrol (12) “Oh My Love” (13) Guitar (14) The Beatles (15) “American Pie” (16) Keith Richards (17) Andrew Lloyd Webber (18) Scotland ***************************** A WELCOME RETURN Watchet Live returns for it’s fifth year as West Somerset’s largest outdoor music event.
