WELCOME TO PSCC 2008 IN GLASGOW
It is our privilege and pleasure to welcome you to the 16th Power System Computation
Conference, to be held in Glasgow, Scotland from 14 to 18 July 2008. PSCC is a world
renowned event which takes place every three years in various European locations. The
Conference offers an international forum where theoretical and technical issues are confronted,
progress and breakthroughs are presented, new ideas discussed, and challenges identified. The
very beginning of PSCC dates back to the early sixties, and since then its reputation has grown
steadily. And even more so today, with the attention given to the effectiveness of energy markets,
the high profile of security of energy supplies, the opportunity and challenge of integrating
significant penetrations of renewables, and the continued penetration of advanced information
technologies into the power system, PSCC is the ideal forum to discuss future challenges.
The increasing number of submitted contributions testifies to the Conference’s appeal. 530
full papers have been submitted, after a first pre-selection based on extended abstracts. The
final selection retained 224 papers. These various contributions will be presented in 4 parallel
sessions, running from Tuesday 15 July 2008 to Friday 18 July 2008. Altogether there will be
36 regular and 4 invited sessions, 2 plenary survey sessions and 1 panel. For the first time
the PSCC tutorial has been integrated within the conference fee, and we look forward to good
participation on Monday 14th July at the tutorial course on “Blackouts and Blackout Prevention”.
To support good technical engagement at PSCC, the papers have been made available to preregistered delegates on the Conference web site. The proceedings are available at Conference
on a CD – no paper copies will be printed by the organisers to minimise waste.
The organisation of PSCC has been supported by the dedicated efforts of many, including the
hard working members of the Technical Programme Committee, the Local Organising Committee,
and the conference support teams at the University of Strathclyde. Conference has also been
enhanced by the participation of our sponsors and exhibitors, for which thanks is due.
Glasgow, with a population of around 650,000, is Scotland’s largest city, the commercial capital
of Scotland and one of the liveliest and most cosmopolitan destinations in Europe. While formerly
known for building ships, locomotives and powerful machines, the city has been reborn as a
centre of style and vitality set against a backdrop of outstanding Victorian architecture. It is also
blessed by being surrounded by some of the most breathtaking scenery in Western Europe.
Glasgow boasts world famous art collections, the best shopping in the United Kingdom outside
London and over 20 wonderful museums and galleries, each with its own individual collection and
events programme, and all with free admission. And being within the city centre, the conference
is within easy reach of the many visitor attractions.
The Local Organising Committee has made every attempt to ensure your stay in Glasgow
is professionally fruitful and socially enjoyable. Various social events have been arranged
throughout the week including a conference banquet in Glasgow’s spectacular, world famous and
recently renovated Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum, a boat trip on Loch Lomond and a special
presentation and tasting session at Auchentoshan Distillery. Accompanying persons will also be
looked after with a varied programme of visits. We trust you enjoy your time with us.

Where is Glasgow ?
Glasgow is an extremely well connected city with excellent transport links. It is served by its own
international airport, Glasgow International, a short distance away, and further links are provided
by airports at Prestwick (30 miles or 48 km) and Edinburgh (40 miles or 64 km). Low cost air
carriers also operate from these airports. There are two main-line train stations serving the UK
and Scotland, while a combination of Low Level and Subway services provide transport within
the city and its surroundings. A comprehensive bus network exists within the city.
