The impetus of which is twofold: to serve as a vehicle to thank and recognize the invaluable support and generosity of Academy donors, as well as increase awareness of and involvement in all aspects of fundraising activities and giving opportunities. My hope is that this publication motivates support, inspires action and becomes a catalyst for on-going dialogue and collaboration. I invite your comments and suggestions as we partner to build a “Pathway to the Future” for the Academy. The Hebrew word derekh can refer to a physical road or pathway, but metaphorically it often refers to the course of one’s life. Everyone who is alive and conscious is on life’s journey and each new day presents us with many opportunities as to how we pursue our own distinctive path. No one can get off the road and no one can walk it for you; it is our own private and unique journey where the decisions and choices we make will ultimately lead us somewhere and propel us forward. Rabbi Warren Goldstein (the chief Rabbi of South Africa) tells the story of a very wealthy man who died and left two wills; one to be opened upon his death and the other to be opened thirty days after the funeral. In the first will, he commanded his family only one thing, to be buried wearing his socks. Out of obligation, the family asked the Jewish burial society to leave his socks on his feet. Unfortunately, their request was denied because, according to Jewish law, the deceased must be buried simply, without any adornment or clothing. Jodie Gisser Director of Institutional Advancement the second will since they did not fulfill the first and only request. Would they be written out of any inheritance? The will read something like this: “By now you have realized that it was not possible to bury me with my socks on. Therefore, I now bequeath to you all my substantial worldly fortune. Take this as a lesson though; you can’t even take your socks with you, let alone your wealth. Make sure you use this money wisely because the money will stay here but what you do with it will accompany you on to the next world.” Life is a journey and there will always be “forks in the road” that present challenging and seemingly conflicting choices. But, as the story of Rabbi Warren Goldstein illustrates, make it meaningful, fulfilling and enjoyable for you and give generously of yourself and your good fortune with all the people with whom you are traveling. Your return and reward will be everlasting. Warmest Regards, Thirty days following the funeral, the family was extremely worried about the contents of www.americanhebrewacademy.org 3 Fundraising Events Dear Academy Families and Friends, It’s hard to believe that the start of the new academic year begins in just a few short weeks. Jodie and I have been planning some new and exciting fundraising appeals for the coming year, as well as keeping some of the oldies but goodies that have been successful. Below are listed a few of those fundraising events for 2013-2014. Pathway to the Future Brick Campaign is highlighted in this issue. It is a way you can be part of a permanent legacy for future Ellen Green generations to see when visiting the Academy. Assistant Director of Honor a student, a graduate, beloved parents, Institutional Advancement, teachers or friends. Commemorate a special Parent and Alumni Relations birthday or anniversary and pay tribute to those special individuals whose memories live on in our hearts, while paving the walkway entrance to the Academy’s beautiful Gardens of Israel. Academy Golf Tournament is being planned for the spring of 2014. We would love for our friends from all over the world to put together a foursome and join us in Greensboro for this golf outing; however, if that is not a possibility, then we invite you to partner with us through tournament sponsorships. Consider having your company or family be an event sponsor, a green sponsor, a hole sponsor or even a beverage cart sponsor. The possibilities are endless. Mish’loah Manot is always a favorite fundraiser. On Purim, we emphasize the importance of friendship and community by sending gifts of food, mish’loah manot. What a perfectly delicious way to honor and surprise students, teachers, advisors, roommates, houseparents, fellows, colleagues, friends and family, near or far, with a yummy and strictly kosher gift bag of treats, including mouth-watering hamantaschen. The High Holy Days appeal starts now! As Rosh Hashanah begins on the eve of September 5, it’s time to think about sending Shana Tova greetings to your friends and family around the world. And the American Hebrew Academy can help you do just that with two great options, shown on the following page; choose one or take advantage of both. 4 American Hebrew Academy Continued... Best wishes for a Happy and Healthy New Year, www.americanhebrewacademy.org 5 A Tribute to Phyllis and Stanley, z”l, Shavitz Stanley Shavitz, z”l, and Phyllis Polon met in 1955 at a Jewish singles weekend in Charlotte, NC, and were married six months later. In 2005, they renewed their vows on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary. Stanley and Phyllis were devoted to each other and dedicated to helping those less fortunate through philanthropy and community involvement. Stanley and Phyllis were born and raised in the south, North Carolina and Virginia respectfully. Stanley’s father owned a jewelry store in Gastonia and he managed the business with his father until he married Phyllis, and their son, Steve, was born. In 1958, the Shavitz Family moved to High Point to start their own business, Direct Furniture, which they successfully operated together for 30 years. Once retired, they relocated to Greensboro in order to be closer to Steve, his wife, Joy, and their grandsons, Marc and Robbie. Stanley and Phyllis were very involved and active in both the High Point and Greensboro communities. They supported many Jewish causes: the synagogues in both communities, maintenance at the High Point Hebrew Cemetery, American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), Camp Judaea and the Jewish Education Loan Fund (JELF). Phyllis and Stanley, z”l, Shavitz High Point Regional Hospital Bequest Endowment Dinner 2006 In High Point, Stanley served on the High Point Civil Service Commission, Youth Services Board, Consumer Credit Council, High Point Public Library Board and High Point Historical Museum Board. In Greensboro, he was involved with the Greensboro Jewish Federation and served on the Boards of the Gate City Kiwanis Club, Greensboro Children’s Museum and the American Hebrew Academy. Phyllis was very involved with Hospice of the Piedmont and spearheaded a pilot fundraiser, “Taste of the Town.” Now, 25 years later, the event raises more than $100,000 with over 200 volunteers. A lifelong supporter of Hadassah and “Keeper of the Gate,” Phyllis is very proud to have been the first Jewish member on the High Point Public Library Board as well as also serving on the Boards of and in leadership positions for the: Sheppard’s Center of Greensboro, Judaic Art Gallery of the North Carolina Museum of Art, Women to Women of Greensboro and is a LOJE (Lion of Judah Endowment) at the Greensboro Jewish Federation. 6 American Hebrew Academy Continued... According to Phyllis, Stanley thought that Chico Sabbah, z”l, was an amazing man and the American Hebrew Academy was the greatest idea. Stanley was overjoyed to join the Board of Trustees and was determined to do whatever he could to help increase awareness, student enrollment and financial support. “Had I only worked harder and spent less, I would have even more money to give to the Academy,” Stanley remarked. Stanley passed away in 2006, but his legacy is larger than life. Funding the creation of the Stanley and Phyllis Shavitz Hebrew Language Learning Lab as well as establishing the Stanley Shavitz Merit Scholarship Fund epitomizes Stanley’s commitment to Jewish education and the American Hebrew Academy. The Academy is extremely fortunate and grateful for the ongoing and everlasting support from Stanley and Phyllis. Phyllis Shavitz with 2012-2013 recipients, Stanley Shavitz Merit Scholarship Fund at 2013 Sukkot Luncheon Left to Right: Janette Husny, Phyllis Shavitz, Benjamin Siegel and Amit Besen www.americanhebrewacademy.org 7 Annual Sukkot Luncheon Beautiful fall colors and clear skies were the scenery for our annual Luncheon in the Sukkah, where Greensboro Academy supporters and friends gathered for a festive luncheon. This was an opportunity for members of our local community to meet and mingle with Academy students. Through their generous charitable gifts, several of our students receive merit or need-based scholarships to attend the Academy. We are so very grateful for their continuos support and the support of the Greensboro community. Rising junior Moshe Katchen, one of several students chosen to speak to our guests, talked passionately about his reasons for attending the Academy and how appreciative he is to have been chosen to receive one of the Academy’s scholarships. Excerpts of his presentation are on the next page. Left to Right: Moshe Katchen ‘15, Sean Lerner ‘16, Evan Benson ‘15, Benjamin Siegel ‘16, Sarah Schneid ‘13, Avril Fleitas ‘15 8 American Hebrew Academy My name is Moshe Katchen. I am a new sophomore at the American Hebrew Academy and an honored recipient of a merit scholarship. I first found out about the Academy at my Young Judea summer camp in Wisconsin. I was so drawn to this school because I saw great academic programs and state-of-theart facilities. I also saw a friendly environment, but most of all I saw a chance to be Jewish. I come from a small Midwestern town where people know a lot more about corn and soy beans then they do about Judaism. The only place I could be Jewish was my camp. At school, I hid my name because it was so unusual; I had to hide my academic achievements because of the high school culture. At the Academy, I realize that there are no limitations on what you can achieve. I started the chess club and I am excited to try out for the tennis team in the spring. I don’t have to worry about any of my past problems that existed at my other school, because they just do not exist at the Academy. Coming to the Academy has given me the opportunity to not only be surrounded by a Jewish community, but also a pluralistic environment. I want you to know what a privilege it is to be here with you today, to be chosen to speak in front of you and how grateful I am for your contributions to the Academy. I am truly looking forward to giving back to this school and this community to the best of my ability. On behalf of all the scholarship recipients, I thank you for all you have done for this school. The scholarship was created as a tribute to the Academy’s faculty whose inspiration and encouragement fosters student success. The family proudly states, “By just any measure, the American Hebrew Academy is not only recognized as America’s only International Jewish Boarding High School, but has quickly evolved into one of the very top Jewish day schools in the country. The best measure of its growth can be seen in the successes of its graduates as they go on to higher education and try to make the world a better place. While the cost of education is great, we have to realize that it is well worth the investment. Saving, and having to do without some of the extras we would like to have, is not always an easy thing, but knowing that our children will be well educated and well prepared for college and beyond is worth the sacrifices. The purpose of the Maimonides Scholarship for Academic Excellence is to reach those academically gifted and motivated students who would not be able to attend the Academy, without substantial financial assistance, regardless of the sacrifices made by their families. It gives these young people a chance that they would otherwise never have, and it honors the Academy faculty who are key figures in the success of the school and its graduates.” 10 American Hebrew Academy Board of Trustees member Scott Shay and his wife Susan launched a $200,000 Matching Gifts Challenge Grant from July 2012 – December 2012. Susan and Scott have been ardent supporters and donors to the Academy. Their intention in making this generous gift was to expand the network of donors who support the Academy and encourage others to contribute in the hope that we would meet the challenge. Thank you to the Shay Family and to everyone who participated in the Strike A Match appeal as we exceeded our goal by 200%. The Academy qualified for a $50,000 matching grant funded by AVI CHAI and Kohelet Foundations, in partnership with the Jewish Funders Network and the Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education (PEJE) this past year. The program matched funds, (1:2 match), of first time donors giving a gift of at least $10,000 or increasing a gift 5X’s from any previous gifts given to support Jewish day school education. Participating schools could receive a maximum match of $50,000. The American Hebrew Academy wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to these donors and funders for their generosity, support and commitment to our students and the mission of the Academy. www.americanhebrewacademy.org 11 תודה רבה It is with heartfelt thanks and sincere gratitude that we acknowledge each of our supporters who have generously donated charitable gifts to the Academy during this past fiscal year, which ran from July 1, 2012 – June 30, 2013. We thank you for sharing in our vision to educate the best and brightest future Jewish leaders of the world. (We apologize in advance for any omissions we might have made.) You can write a message to be engraved on a commemorative brick, which will pave the walkway entrance to the campus’s Gardens of Israel and enhance the beauty of this already amazing space. The bricks will reflect a network of friendships and relationships as well as personal and family milestones. This is an opportunity to recognize or memorialize a friend or loved one; honor a teacher, child or parent; celebrate a special achievement; and create a lasting memory of your time on campus or congratulate a recent graduate. The possibilities are endless. Thank you in advance for being part of our legacy and creating a Pathway to the Future with your participation. Leave your footprint at the American Hebrew Academy 18 American Hebrew Academy Bricks are available in three sizes: 4” x 8”, 8” x 8” and 12” x 12”, and come in two colors, Brown and Impressions. The Zighelboim Family was so excited about the new Brick Campaign; they wasted no time in ordering the first two bricks. Stephanie Zighelboim enthusiastically states, “This project is fantastic because it gives our family the opportunity to honor the American Hebrew Academy in a very permanent and tangible way. How fun it will be to witness Academy families and friends transforming the gravel circles in Chico’s Gardens of Israel into a patchwork of loving messages, dedications and inscriptions.” Photographs courtesy of Andrew Bowen, Andrew Bowen Photography For more information or to order your bricks, please contact: Ellen Green, Assistant Director of Institutional Advancement, Parent and Alumni Relations at 336.217.7056 or [email protected] www.americanhebrewacademy.org 19 A Sharp New Advocacy Tool for Jewish Day Schools Posted on May 28, 2013 by Dr. Elaine Cohen, Dr. Scott Goldberg, Amy Katz, Dr. Marc Kramer and Dr. Jane West Walsh Jewish day schools make a difference in the lives of children, the educators who learn with them, and the communities they serve. However, with escalating costs, a lagging economy, and disruptive new educational models, the sustainability of day schools has become an existential challenge. We’ve long encouraged schools to clarify their missions and articulate their cases with strength, emotion, and evidence. In turn, they’ve learned to sharpen their value propositions and use data that demonstrates a significant return on investment. Research conducted from the within the Jewish world in recent years has supported the argument for Jewish day school education. Now, a new academic study provides dramatic evidence about the power of faith-based education to help Jewish day schools advocate more forcefully. William Jeynes, a senior fellow at the Witherspoon Institute in Princeton, New Jersey – not a Jewish day school professional – has published an important paper in the Peabody Journal of Education that notes: “attending private religious schools is associated with the highest level of academic achievement among the three school types [religious private schools, charter schools, and public schools], even when sophisticated controls are used to adjust for socioeconomic status.” Jeynes’ data, which derives from a meta-analysis of 90 studies on a variety of educational institutions, is extremely relevant for those of us making the case for Jewish day school. Its very existence – which came to our attention via the Council for American Private Education (CAPE) - instantly boosts the reputation of Jewish day schools for current families, alumni and friends. This research persuasively confirms for our Jewish day school families that they’ve made the right decision. For families that have not yet made the choice, it makes the case that their children will benefit when they do. Jeynes’ paper is an invaluable advocacy tool for Jewish day schools, providing an unprecedented form of external validation. Because the data comes from a totally unaffiliated source, with no investment in Jewish day schools’ success or failure, it achieves a kind of objective authority our own data can’t possibly possess. 20 This research confirms what we have been saying for a long time: Jewish day school education does make a significant difference. By promoting this research, in conjunction with school-focused advocacy, day schools will create an opportunity for the wider Jewish world to realize how much our version of a “private faith-based school” has to offer. Jewish parents, after all, universally subscribe to the notion of educational excellence. In an interview with the Council for American Private American Hebrew Academy Continued... Education, Jeynes says: “Students who attend religious schools score at an academic level about 12 months ahead of their counterparts.” This striking result and affirmation of the quality of religious schools should influence the educational choices of every Jewish parent. (Note: Jeynes’ paper has other uses as well. For those who must contend with competition from Hebrew charter schools, Jeynes offers this: “Students from public charter schools, however, performed no better than their counterparts in other public schools.”) This research has particular implications for schools’ financial sustainability because parents’ perceived quality significantly influences enrollment, and word-of-mouth marketing can make or break an enrollment program. Of course, this study alone won’t necessarily cause local parents to choose a Jewish day school, but it can, and should, become part of every school’s advocacy plan. Smart schools will publicize Jeynes’ findings, in tandem with data that argues their own academic excellence, and they will announce this in a variety of ways (to ensure that the message gets out there, and sticks): blog posts, email blasts, tweets, webinars, and even live “Day School Data” events on campus. Jewish day school leaders have been handed a bonus in the form of an outsider’s research. The challenge: To make Jeynes’ work matter to their communities. It will, for the schools that use it, provide deep, structural support for any Jewish day school argument.
