MESSAGE
FROM THE
PRESIDENT & CEO
At the Center for Disability Services, 2007 was the Year of Assistive Technology. While
technology may help you to be more productive in your work and home life, imagine what
it means when technology allows you to communicate, maybe for the first time; Or makes
it possible to be more comfortable in a wheelchair; Or enables you to cook a meal in your
own adapted kitchen and share it with family members sitting at an accessible table.
Technology surrounds us, in ways large and small. The year began with a successful
telethon--our 47th all-live, all-local broadcast! The telethon gives us an opportunity to
showcase the successes of our consumers, and educate the community about our programs and services.
It is also a chance to recognize donors, and of course, to raise money.
We had several big events in the spring. In May, Upstate Rehab Products, part of the Center, opened a
showroom for product demonstration and sales in Guilderland. During June, we held an open house to
introduce our new Healthcare & Assistive Technology Center in Clifton Park.
We organized another highly successful Asperger’s Syndrome Conference and gave a great Center send off
to a team of college roller blading enthusiasts who were raising money for the Center and awareness of
autism all along the East Coast.
For prom, our Langan School secondary students enjoyed a Night in the Big Apple theme, and the six
member Class of 2007 held a well-attended commencement ceremony in June.
In July, our Siro’s Cup benefit honored horse trainer Todd Pletcher. An August golf event welcomed
NFL Hall of Famers and in October, Goose Gossage was a special, and very popular attraction at our
Golf Classic.
Also in October, three employees received awards for excellence, and a Center board member was honored for her community work with individuals who have disabilities.
After much study, the decision was made to pursue a multi-bed expansion of St. Margaret’s Center, to include beds designated for pediatric residents who require mechanical ventilation. The Certificate of Need
was filed in December.
The year closed out with our annual Giving Tree donations to assist consumers and families in need.
As always, our individual and corporate donors were generous all 12 months with time, talent, and gifts.
We think we say it all when we describe the Center for Disability Services as the place where people get
better at life. In our 65 year history, we have experienced great changes in the treatment, expectations and
possibilities for individuals who have disabilities. Technology is an invaluable tool for us and we are
excited to see what new innovations there will be in the future. Thank you for sharing the Center’s journey.

MESSAGE
FROM THE
CHAIRPERSON
OF THE
BOARD
On behalf of the members of the Governing Board at the Center for Disability Services,
heartfelt thanks to you for the decades of generous support given to the Center, its consumers and families.
We are very proud of the evolution of the Center, and are humbled by the amazing
progress propelled by technology. The use of computers, voice recognition software and
head switch activated communication has made a huge difference in so many lives.
The new Healthcare & Assistive Technology Center will be a cornerstone in these efforts and an
important resource for information, treatment, and consultation. We are pleased to bring this to the
community.
As a Governing Board, we are charged with guiding the Center’s future. The Center’s mission is to
enable and empower people, primarily those with disabilities, to lead healthy and enriched lives. Its
vision is to be recognized as the regional preference and the national model for services, education,
training, and research. Technology, in the hands of the Center’s expert and caring employees, is
helping us to achieve these goals.
We are deeply grateful to those of you who already place great value on the Center’s work. I encourage
you to support the Center’s 15,000 consumers in whatever manner possible. What is accomplished at
the Center on a daily basis is important to my family and to yours.
Terence P. O’Connor, Esq.

NEW HEALTHCARE & ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY CENTER WILL HELP MANY
(Clifton Park) When she first heard about a new Healthcare &
Assistive Technology Center coming to Clifton Park, Maxcine
Johnson was excited about the possibilities. Today, the Healthcare & AT Center is open for all to visit and utilize.
“People can come and see what is available,” Johnson said,
“and what might benefit them or a family member. Everything
is in one place, from treatment to resources.”
The Healthcare & Assistive Technology Center, operated by
the Center for Disability Services, was created to help improve
the lives of individuals with disabilities by providing resources,
equipment, and assistive technology experts who can help determine what devices or equipment may work best for a given
person, decide how to adapt or customize it, and offer training
in its use.
“There has been an explosion of new technologies that can improve the lives of individuals with disabilities, but there remains a knowledge gap,” explained Daniel J. Silverman, MD,
Medical Director of Center Health Care. “The Assistive Technology Center can redress those barriers. AT experts, the heart
and soul of the facility, embody our mission to enable and empower people, primarily those with disabilities, to lead healthy
and enriched lives.”
Johnson, who receives medical treatment and other services for
her multiple sclerosis through Center Health Care at the Center for Disability Services, thought the AT Center’s demonstration kitchen, with its adapted appliances and accessible
furniture, was amazing.
“With stoves in a regular apartment, you have to be very careful and cautious with them if you use a wheelchair,” explained
Johnson. The smooth cooktop with no open flame or raised
burners would be ideal for her needs.
When her occupational therapist, Elaine Hill, OTR, ATP,
showed her an oven installed lower than usual in a wall cabinet, Johnson declared it would be safer and easier for her to
use because she would not have to reach up to place a pan inside of it.
Johnson, who lives in an apartment building operated by the
Center, was one of the first local people to benefit from the AT
Center. Her living space has been being adapted to her specific
needs, thanks to funding from the MS Society. The project was
recently completed.
“There’s so much people take for granted, like sitting down
and having a meal with your family. It’s the little things that
make you a part of... it’s about quality of life. Technology is really assisting in that,” noted Johnson.
Maxcine Johnson likes the one-stop convenience it provides by
saving time and travel costs. She also thinks the patient benefits from the on site collaboration among various doctors and
therapists.
“We’re all in this together,” she said. “I believe this is what we
should do. The Center has been beneficial to me!”
The Healthcare & Assistive Technology Center, operated
by the Center for Disability Services, is located at 939
Route 146, Building 300, Clifton Park, NY 12065.

The Healthcare & AT Center is part of a coordinated
approach to providing accessible, comprehensive services in
one place.

“The Center for Disability Services has a vision that technology can be a great equalizer which allows
people with disabilities to fully participate in school, work, and home activities. The Healthcare &
Assistive Technology Center will play a major role in making the Capital Region more inclusive for
all of its citizens.”
Alan Krafchin, President & CEO, Center for Disability Services
“The Center for Disability Services was able to take what we thought was a deficit and see it as an
asset. By putting Jamal into things that were repetitive but helpful, they made him see some outcomes that were great.”
Usef Burgess, father of Jamal Burgess, who is a consumer-worker at the Center’s
700 South Pearl Street site
“I think the hardest thing, unlike other disabilities, when you look at somebody who has autism
there’s no way to tell. We have to be willing to accept people who are on the (autism) spectrum for
how they perceive the world... which is different than the rest of us.”
Larry Krause, explaining the impact autism has had on son David Krause’s
outlook and interactions
“There has been an explosion of new technologies that can improve the lives of individuals with
disabilities, but there remains a knowledge gap. The Assistive Technology Center can redress those
barriers.”
Daniel J. Silverman, MD, Medical Director of Center Health Care, explaining why
the Healthcare & Assistive Technology and Center was created
“You find if you’re sitting at a normal table, it’s hard to maneuver a wheelchair and the hand controller gets in the way. There’s so much people take for granted, like sitting down and having a meal
with your family. It’s the little things that make you a part of... it’s about quality of life. Technology
is really assisting in that.”
Maxcine Johnson, a patient who has MS and who uses the resources of the new
Healthcare & Assistive Technology Center in Clifton Park
“My main goal, as an Occupational Therapist, is to help people increase their level of independence... whether it be through adaptation, such as a built up spoon, or adapting the environment by
having an elevating sink, or by doing treatment. We can actually change the person or we can
change the environment or we can change the task.”
Elaine Hill, OTR, ATP, Occupational Therapist and Assistive Technology Practitioner
