TRUMP’S WORDS HURTFUL?
County military veterans, Gold Star mom
weigh in on GOP candidate’s divisive comments
By J SWYGART
and JANNAYA ANDREWS
Donald Trump has had a difficult month; albeit
many would say it is very much of his own making.
In dominating the news cycle for the past few
weeks, the Republican presidential candidate has
drawn increasing scorn nationwide from military
veterans’ organizations, families of soldiers who
have died in combat and politicians from both
parties over comments seen as disrespectful of
American combat veterans.
The public backlash against Trump came quickly when he insulted the parents of U.S. Army
Capt. Humayun Khan, who was killed in Iraq in
2004 while serving his country. Trump has been
widely denounced for criticizing the Khans, a
Muslim-American couple. Khizr Khan spoke out
against Trump at the recent Democratic National
Convention and criticized Trump’s position on
Muslims. Trump subsequently questioned why
Ghazala Khan, mother of the slain soldier, did not
speak during the convention, implying her religion
prevented her from doing so. The presidential hopeful’s remarks were widely viewed as disrespectful to
the Gold Star family.
On Tuesday, during a rally in Virginia, the GOP
presidential candidate also appeared to make light
of the Purple Heart medal, awarded to combat veterans injured in the line of duty.
After a retired lieutenant colonel and Purple
Heart recipient gave his medal to Trump, the candidate remarked, “Man, that’s like big stuff. I always
wanted to get the Purple Heart. This was much
easier.”
Those remarks, as well as Trump’s earlier comments about the Khan family, did not sit well with
many veterans. The national Veterans of Foreign
Wars organization earlier this week called Trump’s
attack on the Khan family “out of bounds.”
“Election year or not, the VFW will not tolerate
anyone berating a Gold Star family member for
exercising his or her right of speech or expression,”
Brian Duffy, commander-in-chief of the VFW, said,
using the term for families whose relatives were
killed in battle.
A GOLD STAR MOM’S THOUGHTS
Fritz Bultemeyer, one of the county’s most decorated military veterans, said a Gold Star family that
appeared at the Democratic National Convention
was was there simply “to get Trump’s goat” and
“should not have been there” at all.
Rose Jenkins of Decatur is a Gold Star Mother,
having lost her only son in combat on foreign soil.
Sgt. Phillip Jenkins, a Bellmont High School graduate, was killed in action in Iraq in 2010.
Jenkins said she tries her best “to ignore all the
political crap” that’s going on during this — one of
the most bizarre campaign years most people have
ever witnessed. But she was also hesitant to criticize Trump for his comments directed at the Khan
family, preferring instead to focus on her unwavering support for America’s armed forces personnel.
“I know there are people who want him to apologize to Gold Star families,” said Jenkins. “And
maybe he should. But you know how he is; he
speaks his mind.
“But she (Ghazala Khan) is a mom. I don’t care
what her religion is; I don’t care what the color of her
skin is. We all have our own beliefs. Our sons and
daughters put their lives on the line for your free-
Decatur resident and Gold Star mother Rose
Jenkins said of Ghazala Khan, “She’s a mom. I
don’t care what her religion is; I don’t care what
the color of her skin is. We all have our own beliefs.
Our sons and daughters put their lives on the line
for your freedom, and that should be all that really
matters.”
dom, and that should be all that really matters.”
Jenkins said there currently are petitions circulating online, including one from an organization
that wants to speak out on behalf of all Gold Star
families. She will not be part of that movement.
“You have no idea how I feel,” Jenkins said she
would tell petition supporters.
But Rose Jenkins knows exactly how she feels
about the U.S. military.
“I support our military 1,000 percent, and I
always will,” she said. “My son did what he did
because it’s what he wanted to do. He felt it was the
right thing to do for his country ... and he made the
ultimate sacrifice.”
LOCAL VETS SPEAK OUT
The sentiments expressed by many Adams County
military veterans concerning the controversial GOP
presidential candidate were varied and wide-ranging. With the county’s strong Republican, conservative base, it likely comes as little surprise that many
are backing Trump. But others were equally dismissive of the Republican presidential hopeful. Following
are the views expressed by some of them.
JAN SMITH
Jan Smith served in the U.S. Navy from 19601964. He is the former commander of American
Legion Post 43 in Decatur and remains active

pollution discharge permit
By JANNAYA ANDREWS
The city of Berne has been very happy with its
new wastewater treatment facility to date, despite
myriad demands by the Indiana Department of
Environmental Management which skyrocketed the
project’s cost — with little to no additional funding
from the state.
It’s all water under the proverbial bridge now as
the system is in place and operating like a welloiled machine. Now the time has come for the city
to prove the system’s worth as the city council
works to renew the National Pollutant Discharge
Elimination System permit with IDEM.
Brady Dryer, compliance manager with
Commonwealth Engineers, met city council Aug. 8
evening to go over changes to the city’s Sewer Use
Ordinance in order to renew the NPDES permit,
initially issued in 2012.
Dryer said the city accepts industrial flow from
Indiana Coatings Inc., which is classified as a New
Source Metal Finisher and requires Berne implement a Non-Delegated Pretreatment Program.
In short, Dryer said, IDEM is responsible for providing a permit to Indiana Coatings, and the city is
responsible for certain industrial pretreatment program requirements.
Now the city needs to update the ordinance to
coincide with IDEM requirements.
“Basically, since the city accepts industrial flow,
the state issues a 5 year permit,” he said. “The state

in the Legion as a sergeant-at-arms
and as a member of the post’s Color
Guard.
Smith said he has heard little chatter
among other veterans about Trump’s
verbal attacks on the Khan family,
likely because of a clause in the local
American Legion post’s by-laws that
states that “we don’t argue politics or
religion” at the post.
But when asked if he felt it was
improper for Trump to mock a Gold
Star family, Smith said, “Yes it was. He
(Trump) should have never touched it,
as far as I’m concerned. We’ve got a lot
of veterans who want to support him,
but with his rhetoric ... well, it throws
out a lot of question marks,” Smith
said.
“I’m a Republican, but I think it’s a
shame we don’t have better (presidential) candidates ... on both sides. This is
an important election, and I think a lot
of people will vote differently than they
have in the past,” Smith continued. “I
just hope a lot of young people come
out to vote.”
FRITZ BULTEMEYER
Former Adams County Veterans
Service Officer Fritz Bultemeyer, a
retired Command Sergeant Major in the
U.S. Army who served in the Vietnam
conflict as well as in Afghanistan,
Kuwait and Qatar, had strong feelings about the controversy surrounding Trump, and strong support for the
candidate.
“In actuality, it was all scripted, as
far as what (Khizr Khan) said at the
convention,” Bultemeyer said. “It was
all designed to get his (Trump’s) goat.
Khan shouldn’t have been there. He
shouldn’t have been allowed to speak.”
Bultemeyer said Khan’s family was
brought to the convention because they
were a Muslim family whose son had
been killed in action and Democrats
were looking to anger Trump following
his proposition to ban Muslims from
entering the United States.
“Why not bring out a non-Muslim
soldier’s family? The fact is — he was a
Muslim man, killed in a Muslim country, by a radical Muslim,” Bultemeyer
said. “But I can tell you, having served
three tours in that region, I know how
the Muslim mind thinks, and there’s no
such thing as a moderate Muslim.”
In reference to Trump’s comments
regarding Ghazala Kahn, Bultemeyer
said in his experience, Muslim women
are not permitted to speak in a public
setting unless given prior permission
by their husband or a male superior.
“So it very well could have been that
she wasn’t allowed to say anything,”
he said. “And I tell you something else,
had it been a daughter that was killed,
it wouldn’t have been on the same
level as the son. In the Muslim culture,
women aren’t equal to men.
“We don’t allow that (mistreatment
of women) in this country. We’re one
of the strictest countries in the world
when it comes to treating people equally, whether people want to believe that
or not. You have to serve in some of
those countries to understand how
they think. And I think if more people
understood, they’d agree (with closing
the boarders).”
While Bultemeyer easily declares his
support for Trump in the presidential
race, he acknowledges the GOP candidate has some work to do.
“I like that he speaks his mind; that
he’s not afraid of the politicians. But
he needs to learn to let go of things. He
needs to concentrate on Hillary, (vice
presidential candidate Tim) Kaine and
Obama. He needs to focus on the campaign and stop responding to all these
personal attacks.”
GEORGE LaTURNER
They say once a Marine, always a
Marine, and Sergeant George LaTurner,
a Vietnam veteran, certainly looks the
part. A gruff looking “man’s man,”
LaTurner has the look of someone used
to speaking his mind. And he wasn’t
shy when asked his opinion about
Trump.
“You couldn’t print most of what I
have to say about him,” the Decatur
man said, calling Trump’s recent comments “very inappropriate.”
“There’s no reason for it. To say
(Kahn’s) wife couldn’t make comments
was asinine. The man is out of control,”
he said.
LaTurner’s disdain for the Republican
candidate was palpable as he recalled
Trump’s remarks about Arizona Sen.
John McCain, a fellow Republican.
“The comments he made about
McCain were out of line. McCain spent
five years as a POW. What he did ...
it’s above and beyond,” LaTurner said.
“To say McCain wasn’t a war hero ... I
don’t know; there’s things I’d like to do.
McCain’s not my favorite politician, but
that doesn’t have anything to do with
his military service.”
LaTurner was referring to a 2015
interview during which Trump, after
being reminded of McCain’s heroism
during Vietnam, replied, “He’s a war
hero because he was captured. I like
people that weren’t captured, okay?”
The latest spark of criticism to hit
the Trump camp came after the GOP
presidential candidate received a Purple
Heart from a veteran prior to a campaign event in Ashburn, Va. After reciving the medal, Trump said, in part, “I
always wanted to get the Purple Heart.
This was much easier. But I tell you, it
was such an honor.”
LaTurner was not pleased with the
candidate’s acceptance of the medal.
“It’s a Purple Heart, and you only get
those if you’re wounded. It’s not an
honor. (Trump) didn’t earn it.”
Inappropriate comments aside,
LaTurner feels Trump is unqualified
to serve as president of the United
States.
“I don’t think he could ever make
a sane decision. I could see him, in
negotiations with another country and
someone says something he doesn’t
like, and he gets up and storms out and
blows years of peace. He doesn’t have
the temperament. He doesn’t have the
brain,” LaTurner said.
JOHN SCHULTZ,
DOUG BAUMAN
Asked if he felt it was improper for
Trump to mock a Gold Star family, Jan Smith said, “Yes it was. He
should have never touched it, as far
as I’m concerned. We’ve got a lot of
veterans who want to support him,
but with his rhetoric ... well, it throws
out a lot of question marks.”
Former Decatur Mayor John Schultz,
a Democrat who served in the U.S.
Army in Vietnam, had strong and derisive words about Trump.
“I am deeply offended by his comments. A lot of people lost their lives
(in defense of the country) and we don’t
need a smart-ass like him (Trump) running his mouth,” Schultz said.
Another veteran of the Vietnam
conflict, Republican Adams County
Commissioner Doug Bauman, said that
as a veteran he is “sensitive” to disparaging remarks aimed at military members or their families.
“But personally, considering Mr.
Trump and some of the comments he’s
made, I tend to take it with a grain of
salt. I don’t think he meant what the
news media brought to the surface,”
Bauman said. “Hopefully it will go
away, and he (Trump) will learn that he
has to watch what he says. He has to
be more careful about what he says.”
“You couldn’t print most of what I
have to say about him,” said former
Marine and Decatur resident George
LaTurner, who called Trump’s recent
comments “very inappropriate.”
RON BOLLENBACHER
Adams County Veterans Service
Officer Ron Bollenbacher, who served
as an Army Reserve Specialist 4th
Class, was pointed in his support of
Trump.
“I’ll tell ya first thing, as far as our
veterans go, I think he’s (Trump) behind
them 100 percent,” Bollenbacher said.
“Sometimes he lets his emotions get
the best of him and starts running his
his mouth, and that could cost him the
election if he doesn’t get it under control.”
Bollenbacher said he feels the incident with the Kahn family at the DNC
was a set-up by the Democratic Party
to antagonize Trump. “That crap on
TV, I wonder how much they (the DNC)
paid them (the Khan family)? Because
I guarantee you, they were paid to do
that. That man (Kahn) is an immigration lawyer; he knows better than that
(to speak for the DNC).”
Despite having come from a strong
Democratic family — his grandfather
was a Democratic trustee in the county
— and being a lifelong Democrat himself, Bollenbacher said he will be voting
for Trump in November.
“He’s had my support since day one.
I’m behind a lot of the ideas he has,
especially on immigration. If we put
Hillary in there, we’ve got four more
years of the same crap we have now.
I don’t see how anyone could possibly
vote for her knowing that. And I’m a
Democrat! But the Democratic party
I grew up with is not the Democratic
party of today.”

Geneva’s Geneva: Gene StrattonPorter’s birthday celebration
Adults age 21 and older are invited to the Limberlost
State Historic Site Visitor Center from 6-9 p.m. on
Aug. 19 for an evening of beer and wine tasting, hors
d’oeuvres, birthday cake and five vintage short films
shown on vintage movie projectors .
“We once again celebrate Geneva Stratton-Porter’s
birthday and her life in the town of Geneva,” said
Bill Hubbard, Limberlost naturalist. “Although it
was coincidence, or maybe fate, that brought the two
Genevas together, the result was felt throughout the
nation and the world.”
A variety of craft beers and Indiana wines will be
sampled. The vintage short films will include what
may be the only science fiction western musical ever
made, according to event organizers. Guests can also
enjoy and learn from a display of events in Stratton's
life and in the town of Geneva the nation and the
world during the years she lived in Geneva, from
1888-1913. Tours of the cabin grounds will be available.
Cost for the evening is $15 a person($10 for
Friends of the Limberlost members). Reservations

originally. Now they are. So we’re getting ahead
of this. The permit doesn’t actually expire until
Aug. 1, 2017.”
Dyer said the purpose of the ordinance
review is to ensure the treatment facility is
still in compliance with IDEM regulations. The
focus, he said, is that the Wabash River is being
protected and there aren’t higher than normal
levels of metals — arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, cyanide, lead, mercury, nickel,
silver and zinc — in the system.
Councilman Gregg Sprunger questioned
whether IDEM had approved the updated version of the ordinance, perhaps remembering
previous encounters with the state agency in
which the city came up on the short end of the
stick.
Dryer said IDEM has not yet approved the
ordinance, however he expects the agency to do
so “in the next few weeks.”
City Attorney Dave Baumgartner told the
council the updated ordinance was only being
introduced Monday. “If IDEM makes changes,
we can always make little changes to it later.”
Council approved the introduction of amended ordinance 681, 5-0.

Swiss Village may soon see upgrades to facility
By JANNAYA ANDREWS
Big things could soon happen for Swiss Village, if all goes
according to plan.
Rod Mason, president / CEO
of Swiss Village, met with the
Berne City Council Aug. 8 evening to discuss a letter of support from the city to help the
facility's pursuit of a grant.
Mason said the facility has
filed a pre-application for a
grant with the state for approximately $12 million, with a
stipulation on the grant stating
half the funds may be used for
refinancing debt while the other
half must be used for improvements of the facility.
By JANNAYA ANDREWS
It's official: Berne city employees will have a little
more green in 2017.
The Berne City Council on Aug. 8 approved an
across the board, flat rate raise of $1,200 annually
for all full-time officers and city employees.
Council also approved a motion to increase the
pay of Mayor Bill McKean and Clerk / Treasurer
Gwen Maller by $1,200 annually, and council members by $250 annually.
The ordinances were introduced at the July 25
meeting, and with no comment from the board were
passed on a 5-0 vote for city employees, and a 4-1
vote for the mayor / clerk / council raise, with councilman Phil Provost voting in dissent.
While expressing support for raises for the mayor
and clerk at the July meeting, Provost expressed
once again his dissent for a raise for council members.
Provost has consistently voted against pay raises
for council since taking office in 2011.

"We've already passed the
first part of the pre-application,"
Mason said. "Now to go through
the second part, we need a letter of support from the community."
If the application is approved,
there will be many more meetings between the facility and
council, he said.
Mayor Bill McKean noted
this is something the city has
done in previous years for various area businesses, including
Swiss Village.
Councilman Mark Wynn
asked what improvements the
city could expect to see, should

grant.
"Remember half the money
will be used on debt," Mason
said, "but the other half will
be used to renovate the Skilled
Nursing Center, the Langfeld
Section and the Living Center."
Mason also noted the interest rate on the grant would be 3
percent for 40 years on a fixed
rate.
The council all voiced support for the grant process and
the possibility of renovations
to Swiss Village. "I see no reason we wouldn't approve this
motion," McKean said. And the
council did just that, approving
the motion, 5-0.
Traffic
The Adams County
Sheriff’s
Department
investigated an accident
at 1:01 p.m. Tuesday at
the intersection of Adams
and Jackson streets in
Monroe.
According
to
the
report, Helen Hakes, 82,
Monroe, was in her vehicle facing westbound at
the intersection and was
attempting to make a left
hand turn. Hakes told
officers she looked both
ways before turning,
but did not see a vehicle coming northbound
on Adams Street. She
turned and then had a
head-on collision with a
vehicle driven by Craig L.
Bieberich, 40, Decatur.
Bieberich said he was
traveling northbound on
Adams Street and while
traveling he noticed
another vehicle stopped
at the intersection and
then make a left turn,
coming into his lane of
traffic. Bieberich applied
the brakes, but the vehicles still collided.
There were no injuries
reported and damages
were estimated between
$2,501-$5,000.

Lilly King’s confidence, drive well known to IU instructors
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Donetta Cothran had
a question for her colleagues in the School of Public
Health after Sunday night’s Olympic breaststroke
semifinal.
‘‘I was asking them which one taught the finger
wag in their class,’’ she said.
Cothran, a kinesiology professor at Indiana
University, was referring to Lilly King’s now-famous
display of disapproval for Yulia Efimova, who had
previously been banned from Olympic competition
as part of Russia’s doping scandal, but was reinstated without explanation. NBC cameras caught the
IU sophomore wagging her finger at a TV showing
Efimova raising her index finger to signal her win in
the breaststroke semifinal.
‘‘You’re shaking your finger No. 1 and you’ve been
caught for drug cheating,’’ King told NBC after winning her own semifinal race. ‘‘I’m just not a fan.’’
That was how much of the world was introduced
to King, and IU faculty members who know the
physical education major say it’s a pretty accurate
representation of who she is.
‘‘She’s not afraid to express herself and to also
give a reason as to why she’s doing what she’s
doing,’’ said Ann Huntoon, a lecturer in the School
of Public Health.
Huntoon had King in her 9 a.m. foundations of
physical education and fundamental movements
class when King was a freshman last fall. King would
BBQ Grills
be there wide awake each morning, having already
completed a full workout, lifted weights and eaten
breakfast.
‘‘If every student was that driven and that awake
at 9 a.m., that would be wonderful,’’ Huntoon said.
Keith Chapin, a faculty member in the kinesiology
department who served as King’s academic adviser,
said she is an exceptional student. She came to IU
having already earned several college credits while
she was in high school and now has one of the highest GPAs in her program, he said.
‘‘She’s an achiever in many dimensions of her
life,’’ he said. ‘‘She’s very well-liked by her peers.’’
The Wren
Homecoming Parade,
a part of the Wren
Wiffleball Tournament,
will begin a 4 p.m. Aug.
20.
Honored during the
parade will be members
of the “Barn Rats” team
that won the first wiffleball tournament 25
years ago.
The Wren Wiffleball
Tournament was the
brainchild of Jamey
Davis (1968-2010). The
original tournament was
comprised of 12 teams.
“The first tournament
was much different
than the tournament of
today,” a release from
the Wren Wiffleball
Tournament Association
states. “There were no
lights, no confetti and
no professional lighting/sound. Jamey
would be very proud of
the tournament’s longevity.
“The Barn Rats lived
within a short distance
of each other. At a
young age, they played

Electronic
monitoring
to measure medication adhereence by patients with
glaucoma documented that
a sizable number of patients
did not regularly use the eye
drops prescibed to them.
Topical medications for
glaucoma lower intraocular
pressure and can delay or
slow the progression of the
eye disease. Medication adherence is important.
Patients who were treated
with once-daily prostaglandin eye drops were recruited
from a university-based
glaucoma clinic. Patients
were given a container with
an electronic cap in which to
store their eye drops. The cap
recorded each time the container was opened.
Of the 407 patients who
completed the three-month
adherence assessment, 337
(82.8 percent) took their
medication correctly on at
least 75 percent of days. The
other 70 patients (17.2 percent) (deemed nonadherent)
were less likely to be able to
name their glaucoma medication, less likely to agree
that remembering to use the
medication was easy, and
more likley to agree with the
sentiment that eye drops can
cause problems.
Given that most patients
are taking their eye drops
as prescribed, identifying
patients at risk of nonadherence is a critical step. The
results from the patient questions and demographic factors may therefore be useful
in creating risk calculators
that could find those patients
most in need of intervention.

Liechty Brothers named Member
of the Month by Berne Chamber
The Berne Chamber of Commerce announced
Liechty Brothers has been named the August
Member of the Month.
The first generation of Liechty brothers to organize and operate Liechty Bros. was Hiram, Elmer
and Oswald. The business was established in 1919
and located at 160 N. Jefferson Street.
Failing health was probably the prime factor for
the change of ownership to the second generation of
Liechty brothers. In 1959, Lynn and Robert Liechty
assumed the operation of the business. They are
the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Oswald Liechty.
In 1980, after 61 years in the same location,
Liechty Bros. moved to a new building, located
at 256 Monroe Street. Doug Schwartz and Leon
Wanner bought into the business in 1984, and in
1988 Pete and Kent Frank purchased the business.
Liechty Bros. was nearly destroyed by a fire in
April 1997. Firefighters from Berne, Geneva and
Preble responded. Although the fire was devastating, the business remained open working from the
warehouse.
The showroom and office moved to 251 East
Water Street where it is today. Current owners
Pete Rupp and Kent Frank have eight employees
and continue to serve the residential and commercial plumbing, heating, air conditioning and sheet
metal needs of the community.

3 Factors That Impact Homeowner Happiness
It is said that as you get older you become wiser, but as homeowners grow
older, do they become happier? According to a nationwide homeowner happiness survey conducted by HomeAdvisor,
the answer is yes. This was the case of
Bob and Joanie Johnson, who dropped
their youngest child off at college in August 2015.
Although they needed time to adjust to
their children no longer living at home,
they soon realized they had extra time
and money to devote to home projects.
Many parents who become empty nesters have this revelation and start focusing on projects that have been placed
on the backburner while kids were in the
house.
“It makes sense that empty nesters have
the highest happy home scores,” said
Dr. Karen Ruskin, HomeAdvisor’s Happiness Advisor. “They have likely settled in
a community they enjoy and plan to stay.
This group also generally has the most
economic stability and time to make their
house a happy home.”
The survey shows that individuals in the
empty-nester stage have higher happy
home scores across the board compared
to all other stages of life. The main factors that contribute to their happiness are
their communities, location and features
of their homes. Compared to other stages of life, empty-nesters feel the safest
in their communities, most connected to
their neighbors and are also the happiest
with the condition of their homes.
Overall homeowner happiness boils
down to a combination of three important
factors: accessibility to attractions and
services, community and dwelling. Interestingly, research shows that accessibility and community play a far bigger role
t

Home
in happiness than dwelling.
“A homeowner’s identity and quality of life
is much more likely to depend on aspects
like weather, for example, as that influences activities accessed in one’s community and affordability over how many
bedrooms and bathrooms they have,”
Ruskin said. “Homeowner happiness is
really about location, location, location.”
This rings true for the Johnsons, who are
far happier with the accessibility of services in their community and their neighbors than other life-stage groups.
Ruskin offers these four tips to make
your home a happier place:
1. Upgrade and remodel your home. Update the landscaping or change out cabinet hardware. These modest to moderate
changes can transform your home into a
$10,725

place that fits your needs.
2. Make sure you have adequate gathering space. Family rooms, living rooms,
dining rooms, kitchens and patios are
great areas to focus on to create an entertainment experience for you and your
guests.
3. Get to know your neighbors. Research
shows that the happiest homeowners enjoy and feel comfortable, as well as safe,
with their neighbors and community. To
reach this comfortability, try organizing a
neighborhood event.
4. Make your home a place you want to
stay. The happiest homeowners feel their
home is their favorite place and somewhere they want to stay long term. Get
comfortable, hang art, put up those family pictures that are sitting in a box, paint
the walls or plant a garden.
