While a bit warm, the weather was otherwise very agreeable. See pages 4 and 5 for pictures of Field Day and see the Trustees’ Meeting Minutes, pages 8 and 9, item 14 for Eric, N8AUC’s report on Field Day. This month’s meeting will be our annual Picnic Meeting. This has traditionally been one of our best attended events and a good time for everybody. The time and location details are on the front cover. Please note the advance reservation date and time. Eric, N8AUC is always looking for ideas for upcoming meeting programs. If you have an idea, have seen or heard of a program presented at another club, or maybe want to present something yourself, please contact Eric at 440-734-3146. We are still looking for meeting location ideas and suggestions, particularly for the east-side. So keep sending those ideas to Eddie at 440-888-9536 or [email protected]. Public Service The Hamfest Association of Cleveland (HAC), the folks who organize and put on the Cleveland Hamfest each year, are looking for a few volunteers to help with the hamfest on Sunday, September 25th. They are specifically looking for people to direct the vendors, take tickets, and assist with the parking among other things. Those who are interested in helping please contact Doug Dever, AB8M, at [email protected] or 216-401-5888 or visit www.hac.org. The Republican National Convention (RNC) is happening July 18th through the 21st. The majority of people coming for the RNC are expected to be arriving on Sunday the 17th and leaving on Friday the 22nd. I expect that those Hams who will be contributing already (Continued on page 3) The Lake Erie Amateur Radio Assn., Inc., LEARA, is a not-for-profit [501(c)(3)] organization dedicated to Amateur Radio and Public Service. (Continued from page 2) have their assignments and know how to get to them. This piece is for those who aren’t participating. There will be tens of thousands of media people, RNC participants, and support staff in attendance. In addition, there will be tens of thousands of protestors and demonstrators of every kind. Some of those will be violent. There will be large sections of downtown and surrounding areas that will be closed or restricted in access. Many streets, including parts of I-90 and the shoreway, will be closed for all or part of the event. Details, including links to maps, may be found at http://www.cleveland.com/rnc-2016/ index.ssf/2016/06/security_zone_location_road_cl.html My personal recommendation is for people to avoid the area from about W.25 to E.55 and from Lake Erie to around I-490. If you absolutely have to travel into or through that area, plan your route well in advance. Until next month, talk on the radio, and use the repeaters. Remember, we need to use them or we will lose them. And, come out and see us at the picnic. Page 8 The Spirit of ’76 and ’88 ~ 47 Years of Service to the Community J uly 2016 LAKE ERIE AMATEUR RADIO ASSOCIATION TRUSTEES’ MEETING MINUTES OF THE MEETING 09 July 2016,at the Maple Heights Branch of the Cuyahoga County Library (Subject to Revision) Present: N8OOF, K8SGX, N8XDO, K8EHP, K8JTK, KG8DN, N8YNR, W8AZO, N8AUC, KD8FTS Guest: KD8TWG (Radio Officer) Call to Order: N8OOF called the meeting to order at 9:18 EDT. Corrections to May minutes: Some asked for time to review the minutes. Subsequently, no changes were asked-for in the minutes as published in the May newsletter. Treasurer’s report: N8YNR reported that LEARA funds are adequate with only one bill to retain a club domain still up for renewal. Membership Report: W8AZO reported that LEARA currently has 161 voting members with an additional 29 who have not yet renewed from last year. KD8FTS mentioned that we might consider using ways that other clubs use to streamline their membership renewals, e.g., monthly auto-renewals. We observed that younger members tend to favor checkless renewal procedures. No determination was made. Venue Report: KD8FTS announced that the November holiday party is already reserved for LEARA at Massimo da Milano. For intervening meetings, he suggested going back to Great Scott in Euclid, with Teams, Lunas and Middleburg Hts. Community Center as options. August, September and October remain open for determining locations. Coffee Cup on Broadway was suggested by N8XDO. Eddie commented that many possible sites are unable to accommodate our needs, which include a cost limit of $20 per person. Unless he hears otherwise, Eddie will choose three sites based on responses at previous meetings, including Great Scott, for the three open monthly meetings in August, September and October. Programs Report: N8AUC asked KD8TWG if he would provide a program on APRS at the August meeting and he accepted. Dave re- quested that the meeting location be on the east side of metro Cleveland. KD8FTS noted this request. Technical Report: We discussed possible causes of periodic noise on ’76 through the various inputs. KD8TWG noted that the audio level seems low at ’76 and the noise problems are not serious. He will eventually get to ’88 to deal with DTMF and PL problems, perhaps in August. N8OOF offered to help. Potential Input Site: N8OOF and KC8NZJ have inspected a site in the Warrensville Heights area as a possible new club input location. The building management seems to be willing to collaborate. There was discussion about options for antenna equipment. KD8TWG suggested that we move quickly to secure this site. W8AZO will be obtaining LEARA equipment from the former Willoughby input to help in this effort. K8SGX made technical observations and offered to assist with some equipment. N8AUC moved and N8YNR seconded to approve $500 of club funds in support of equipment needs to secure this input. Passed unanimously. KD8TWG will proceed to confirm this as a future input site for LEARA. Trustee meeting location: K8JTK mentioned that beginning in September the trustees’ meeting moves to Room number 3 (from Room number 4) at the Maple Heights Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library. Fusion Repeater Location and Coordination: K8JTK asked that the club move to resolve this matter. We discussed possible sites. N8AUC suggested Lakewood. After discussion, W8AZO moved, and K8SGX seconded that the Fusion repeater on 444.7 MHz is to be located at the Lakewood site in place of 444.4. (No further coordination is required.) Passed unanimously. Club Picnic July 26, 2016, in Brecksville: N8AUC has obtained the picnic supplies from KB8VXE and he will bring these to the picnic. W8AZO plans to get to the Brecksville site early, joined by N8XDO who will procure the meat and other cooking materials he needs to do the July 2016 MINUTES cont. The Spirit of ’76 and ’88 ~ 47 Years of Service to the Community (Continued from page 8) cooking. We selected Saturday (July 23) at 6 pm as a reservation deadline. HAC and the Cleveland Hamfest: N8AUC reported that the Hamfest Association of Cleveland has asked for more help from the clubs in managing the Hamfest. After discussion, we determined that we would put out a plea for help in our President’s column and list Hamfest help as an option in our public service calendar. Members willing to help may contact Doug Dever, AB8M at 216-401-5888 or [email protected]. Nominations for October Election: KG8DN, K8JTK and N8YNR consented to serve on the nomination committee for the October election. They will seek interested candidates between now and the August meeting. Candidates for election in October to a three-year term may contact any member of the committee to express interest and obtain information. Old Business: N8AUC reported that LEARA’s Field Day was very successful as a 2A operation. 34 people signed in for attendance. Our two stations made 117 CW contacts and 123 voice contacts for 1362 points. Four boy scouts with their scout leader came for Page 9 the morning to help set up and learn about amateur radio, pledging to attend Field Day again in the future. New Business: N8AUC authorized KD8TWG to use the ’88 repeater on Sunday, July 24, 2016, in support of the Cleveland leg of the Pan Ohio Hope Ride. Adjournment: At 11:50 am EDT, N8XDO moved and KD8FTS seconded that the meeting adjourn. Passed.
