Headboard
We spend almost a third of our lives in the land of Nod, recuperating and recharging our batteries. A cosier
atmosphere and lasting relaxation can be achieved in the bedroom with just a few small changes. This is where
the bed is at the focus: a home-made bed head can turn a simple divan into a piece of furniture with a look of its
own. Designed in elegant French style, it's somewhere to relax on and also adds a touch of colour.
To make a French bed head, you'll need:
Lightweight wooden board in the width of the
bed, approx. 800 mm high, 12 mm or more deep
Foam, cut to the size of the wooden board,
approx. 70 mm thick
Covering fabric of your choice (e.g. velvet) (for a
bed in a width of 1.60 m, you'll need about 2 m x
1.20m of fabric) as well as the same quantity of
non-woven interfacing
12 coverable buttons
An upholstery nail
Thread
Scissors
Tacker (e.g. J-102 DA from Novus) as well as fine
wire staples, type A
A drill, screw-on hanger, wall plug, hook
And this is how it's made:
Step 1: Mark the positions of the 12 buttons on the
board in three rows of 4 buttons spaced about 200 mm
apart. Now drill two small holes close together at each
button mark.
Step 2: Cut the fabric and interfacing to size. Take the
dimensions from the size of the wooden board, adding
150 mm all the way round. For a neat finish, cut the
corners at a 45-degree slant
Step 3: The foam is fastened to the board using the
interfacing. To do this, lay the interfacing over the foam
and staple it down on the back of the board. When
covering the board, it is important to pull the material
taut and start by stapling down on opposite sides. Now
fold the edges of the covering fabric and staple it to the
back of the board as well.

Step 4: To attach the buttons, push the upholstery nail
with a double strand of thread through a button hole in
the board as well as all layers so it comes out at the
front.
Step 5: Thread the button. Now feed the upholstery nail
back through all layers of the bed head and push it
through the second button hole in the wooden board.
For a particularly French look, pull the thread tight and
knot it on the back of the board.
Step 6: Finally, screw the hanger to the top the board
and fix a suitable hook to the wall using the wall plug.
You have now finished making the elegant bed head
that instantly invites you to relax.
Tip:
Anyone owing a cable tacker, e.g. the NOVUS J-19
OKY, can use the insulated cable staples for hanging
the bed head on the hook.
Colour advice:
Don't be afraid of bright colours
Used selectively, a spot of colour can sometimes work
wonders in the bedroom, giving a room a completely
different feel. When it comes to colour, you can really go
to town when choosing your fabric because colour has
a positive effect on mood: red arouses energy, love and
passion, pale blue instils tranquillity and trust. Green
conveys security and harmony, yellow conjures serenity
and joy –and this is where anything goes. Combined
with curtains, bed linen or other accessories to match,
you can create a well-rounded colour concept with a
truly personal touch.
