B O X 3 7 0 STERLING HEIGHTS, MICHIGAN 48311-0370 L PHONE 810-231-2502 L FAX 810-231-2208 L www.awsdetroit.org INSIDE THIS ISSUE CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE 4 HOTLINE LADIES’ NIGHT Technical Meeting November 9, 2006 Hitachi America Ltd: A leader in FSW technology One of the newest enabling trends in aluminum automotive structures is Friction Stir Welding (FSW). Since peak temperatures are well below the melting Frank Hunt point, FSW does not induce harmful metallurgical changes to the weld metal that are common with fusion welding and resistance welding of aluminum. This advantage permits dissimilar grades of aluminum to be welded and greatly enhances the design possibilities for lightweight structures. Agenda Welcome Reception 6:00pm Buffet Dinner 6:45pm Technical Presentation: Spot and Linear FSW for Automotive Applications Frank Hunt, Hitachi America FSW Demonstrations, will include both linear welding and spot-welding of aluminum for automotive applications ENDOWMENTS 7:30pm 8 IN MEMORIUM PATRON’S FUND FOR SCHOLARSHIPS Hitachi America Ltd. is a leader in FSW technology for southeast Michigan. They will be hosting the November Technical Meeting at their research facility in Farmington Hills Michigan. Frank Hunt, a Senior Researcher at Hitachi will be explaining and demonstrating Spot and Linear FSW for Automotive Applications. Frank earned an MS in Materials Science Engineering from the University of Michigan. Come, bring a friend and enjoy this technical update from AWS Detroit. You will see what’s new in automotive welding. Meeting Location 5:30pm HOLIDAY DINNER MEETING 2007 AWS AUTOMOTIVE WELDING SCHOOL S E C T I O N 8:30pm Adjourn Donation: Only $10. Pay at the door. Like many other markets that must respond to the global competition. We have to rethink how we are going to run the business and compete in the world market. We will be required to change the way we process and manufacture. Companies must work on specifications, procedures and processes that can be used in all parts of the world. Change is here and we need stop resisting and move to a global way of thinking. Nothing lasts forever embrace change and manage the effective implementations of global processes. The AWS Welding Show October 31 – November 2, 2006 in Atlanta Georgia is a great place to learn the best practices in manufacturing and construction from around the world. I would encourage you to make a point to attend the AWS Welding Show. and become a global thinker.
