As an age-friendly community, we care for and value all of our citizens, regardless of age. This guide is packed with all the programs and activities you need to keep healthy and active the entire season, whether you like to play cards, swim, dance, relax with yoga or have fun with your friends playing pickleball. There is something for everyone to enjoy. Every spring, hundreds of people in Waterloo participate in environmental events and I encourage you to join us! There are community clean ups, the 20 Minute Makeover, Earth Hour and Waterloo Earth Day – plenty of opportunities for you and your family to help protect and nurture our environment. Please visit waterloo.ca/earthday for more information. One of the building blocks of making a great city is good strategic planning. The key to this is to allow children opportunities to develop skills in verbal communication. These highly creative classes involve storytelling, dramatic play, speech training, creative movement, songs and many language development activities, all based around a central theme. Some of the important life skills our Kindy children learn include; listening, sharing, taking turns, following instructions, memory skills, vocalizing thoughts and emotions. PRIMARY PROGRAM The Helen O’Grady Drama Academy believes the Primary years of school are crucial in building a positive approach to life. The extensive curriculum covering these years is designed to quickly develop in creativity, articulate communication and overall confidence. Introductory activities develop spontaneous language work and ad-lib skills, teaching children how to role play, speak in full sentences and be spontaneous. By doing so, young people become better at resolving conflict and handling situations that may come up in their lives. Speech work is always a very important part of the curriculum. Children are trained, in a fun way, how to use their voices effectively as a communication tool. 30 SPEECH WORK Exercises include: Projection - training the children how to breathe and use the full power in their young voices. Jaw, lip and tongue exercises are used to develop good articulation. Resonance exercises help with the tone and richness of their voices. Expression exercises bring life and vitality to speech. MOVEMENT AND IMPROVISATION Children are taught how to use their bodies as an expressive tool, using music, through mime and creative movement. At the Primary level, children work on improvised performance pieces teaching them how to ad-lib and speak out with confidence and energy. Through the Helen O’Grady method, children are able to take on a character, role-play and make up their own lines in a creative way, and learn how to sustain their language development, allowing multiple sentence flow. At the end of the day this training helps children to become articulate and expressive public speakers. YOUTH PROGRAM Designed to accommodate teenagers, our Youth program offers further opportunities to students with a continued interest in drama. Whilst the self-development aspect is continued in youth theatre, the approach is more theatre arts orientated. The varied and challenging programme includes, voice work building improvisations, mini-scripts monologues, open ended duologues, soap operas, radio plays and theatre games. waterloo.ca ARTS & CULTURE Waterloo Region Museum presents Explore the science of watersheds, aquatic animals, and oceans! The water counteracts the effect of gravity, unloading the joints and greatly reduces impact. The water provides multi-directional resistance for balanced muscle work and allows individuals to change the workout intensity to suit their needs. The turbulence of the water makes the core stabilizers of the body work while toning the abdominal and back muscles. Thermal conductivity keeps the body refreshed throughout the workout. waterloo.ca/swim Age: 3Y+ 3 lessons $93.00 These 30 minute lessons are geared towards swimmers (3Y+) who need extra attention on certain skills. You must register in increments of 3 lessons and indicate the level you wish to register for. You can register for private lessons online. Help us protect the natural areas in our city! Respect property boundaries Respect our wildlife Encroachment is unauthorized use of public land as an extension of one’s own property. From mammals and birds, to reptiles, amphibians, and insects, wildlife foster a healthy forest and share it with residents living nearby. Altering public land by mowing, pruning, or placing items such as garbage, yard waste, sheds, fences, play equipment, composters, vehicles, and bird feeders on public land is not permitted. Encroachment negatively impacts natural areas by smothering native vegetation, introducing non-native species, compacting soil and causing erosion. Drain pools and hot tubs properly Water from pools and hot tubs is generally laden with chemicals that can have a negative impact on vegetation and water features when drained into a park or natural area. Place the drain tube on your property, away from the park or natural area, to allow water to filter into the soils in your yard. Let wildlife feed from the forest Wildlife relies on plants, soils and organic debris for survival. When people harvest from the forest, plants may be depleted allowing undesirable plants to establish. Try planting native plants in your garden to enjoy, while leaving the wild plants for wildlife to use and future generations to admire. Waterloo is home to non-poisonous snakes. A healthy population of these snakes around your property is beneficial because they can help keep local rodents in check – more so than cats! A snake will slither away when startled and will not hurt you. Teaching children to observe wildlife from afar will help avoid confrontation while respecting the wildlife and their habitat. Please do not destroy burrows, nests or other habitat and remember to always stay on designated trails.
