A Creative Approach to a Complex Problem
Over the past three decades, obesity rates in the U.S.
have more than tripled among children age 6 to 11.
In February 2010, First Lady Michelle Obama kicked
off “Let’s Move,” a national campaign to combat
childhood obesity through better school lunches,
increased physical activity and nutrition education.
“I think this country’s leadership will find Active
Generations very appealing,” says Sharon Brangman,
MD, Chief of Geriatric Medicine at SUNY Upstate
Medical University, in Syracuse. “They are looking

Active Generations is an intergenerational nutrition/
activity program that partners older adult volunteers
with children in grades 3-5. Using an evidence-based,
nationally recognized curriculum called CATCH
(Coordinated Approach to Child Health), volunteers
work with kids to build the knowledge and skills they
need to make healthy nutrition and activity choices.
“Active Generations engages older adults in the fight
against childhood obesity, while promoting brain
fitness for the adults as the volunteers challenge their
bodies and minds,” says Marcia Kerz, president of
the OASIS Institute.

Class Reminders
Climate Control
The OASIS heating, ventilation and air conditioning varies.
Considering the fluctuation of the temperature, as well as
everyone’s personal body temperature, we recommend that
members dress in layers.
• Class reminder calls are a courtesy. However it is your
responsibility to maintain your own calendar.
• If an OASIS class is cancelled, we will make every
effort to contact you.
• If you register for a class, please make a commitment
to attend.
OASIS Etiquette
Here’s a refresher course on OASIS etiquette. Remember, part of one’s responsibility as an OASIS
member is to take seriously the pleasure of others, a responsibility fulfilled by quietly attentive (or
silently inattentive) and self-contained behavior.
1. Please no perfumes or hairsprays; many people are highly allergic to them.
2. Arrive on time to class and stay until completion. Arriving and leaving while the class is in session
is discourteous.
3. No food or drinks in the classrooms. Our volunteers do wonderful work, but cleaning up after you is
not part of their job description.
4. THOU SHALT NOT TALK while the instructor is speaking.
5. While learning about your health problems from the experts, remember to hold all questions and
comments ‘til the end of the lecture. Plenty of paper for taking notes and writing down those
questions will be provided.
6. Make sure cell phones and watch alarms are OFF.
7. The old standby: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Adapted and used with permission from Stagebill.
Please remember we are guests in the Macy’s Home Store.
Do not enter the store or OASIS before the posted hour of 10:00am.

117 Navy Medicine Aboard the Ironclads –
Monitor, Merrimac, and More
Jan Herman, Military Historian, Department of Navy
If the historic battle between the ironclads USS
Monitor and CSS Virginia on March 9, 1862,
marked the beginning of the end for the wood and
sail navy, it also created a brand new environment
for medical practice at sea. The new “protection” an
ironclad warship provided was illusory; a new
generation of rifled guns that could pulverize
masonry forts did even worse to seamen enclosed
in an iron-sheathed hull. There were other hazards
to be endured and countless challenges to be met by
the navy physician/surgeon. Learn about the new
navy and the medical practice it spawned during
the Civil War.

301 Biblical Dreams and Their Interpretation
Gideon Amir, Hebrew Scholar
The Bible presents dreams as divine messages that
can predict the future. However, like the predictions
of the ancient Greek oracles, biblical dreams are not
always clear, and their interpretations can also be
vague or ambiguous. We will examine some biblical
dreams to see how close the biblical interpretation
was to the actual event and whether the
interpretation actually affected the event. We will
also apply modern dream interpretation in some
cases, to see if past events in the dreamer’s life can
explain his or her dream (without reference to the
outcome.) Bring an Old Testament to class.

David Hildebrand, Ph.D., Musician and Performer
Join musician/historical reenactor David
Hildebrand as he employs harpsichord, Spanish
guitar and English and German flutes to bring
the rich and varied musical world of Ben Franklin
to life. From pieces written in his honor to songs
he heard in taverns, private homes and theaters,
music was loved and valued by Franklin. Always
an advocate for the common folk, he wrote in
detail on the virtues of sentimental Scottish songs
and the advantages of popular broadside ballads
over formal opera as he experienced it in Paris and
London. Franklin composed comic texts to be sung
as drinking songs, such as “I Sing My Plain
Country Joan,” in honor of his wife Deborah. And
he was the subject of several songs even during his
lifetime.

502 Goya, the Duchess of Alba, and Other

Joan Hart, Art History Instructor, Museum One, Inc.
One of the great romances of the art world was the
love affair between the Spanish master Francisco
Goya and the Duchess of Alba. Or was it? Perhaps
it was no more than a brief liaison, exaggerated by
historians throughout the centuries? We will
investigate this relationship through Goya’s
various portraits of the duchess, including the
infamous “Naked Maja” for which, it is said, she
posed. Also Goya’s numerous paintings of other
women, both humble and royal, will be discussed,

507 The War That Almost Didn’t End:
Ratifying the Treaty of Paris
John Blair, Writer, American 19th Century History
In Annapolis, on January 14,1784, Congress ratified
peace with Great Britain; this marked the triumph
of the American Revolution. Peace had not come
easily. A volcanic eruption, a snowbound assembly,
fear of renewed war, unconstitutional schemes for
ratification, a last-minute “save” by a delegate who
left a sickbedto vote, and a dash to Paris for the
official ceremony – all contributed to the exciting
end of America’s War of Independence. Thomas
Jefferson starred in this drama, and Benjamin
Franklin, as diplomat and scientist, wrapped it all
up. See Congress’s 1984 Proclamation of Peace,
written by Jefferson, in this fascinating
presentation.

Art & Architecture of the Middle
Ages – The Gothic Achievement
Judy Scott Feldman, Ph.D., Art Historian
This two-part slide/lecture series explores the world
of Gothic art and architecture, which embodied in
its beauty and variety the political, social, scientific
and spiritual forces that both shaped the later Middle
Ages and gave birth to modern Europe. Between
the 12th and 15th centuries, bishops, abbots and
kings competed to build ever taller, more exuberant
Gothic cathedrals using new engineering and artistic
techniques: pointed arches, ribbed vaults, flying
buttresses and stained-glass windows. Sculptured
church facades, stained glass and brilliantly
illuminated manuscripts combined stories from the
Bible, saints’ lives, and scenes from everyday life in
ways that manifested a Christian worldview newly
enthralled with nature. See classes 512 and 513.

Experiments and Transformations

and elsewhere throughout England, Germany, and
beyond. See how painters, sculptors and architects
created a new vocabulary of interior space, light,
color and storytelling in sculpture and painting to

730 Bucks County, PA and the Late Renoir
Exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art
Enjoy a two day trip to Bucks County and the
Philadelphia Museum of Art. Our first stop is the
woodworking studio of George Nakashima. Artistic
Furnishings are on display in nine different buildings situated on a landscaped hillside. This
requires moderate “hiking,” so wear comfortable
shoes that can be removed easily for entrance to two
of the buildings. We’ll have lunch at the Cock ‘n’
Bull Restaurant, then tour the Moravian Pottery and
Tile Works, a “working history” museum that still
produces handmade tiles and mosaics in the Arts &
Crafts style of the early 20th century. After checking
into the Golden Plough Inn, enjoy dinner at your
choice of restaurants in Peddlers Village. In the
morning we tour Fonthill, an imaginative architectural combination of Medieval, Gothic and
Byzantine styles designed and built 1908-12 by
Henry Mercer. On to the Philadelphia Museum of
Art for lunch and a visit to the Late Renoir exhibit.
Limit: 46
Leave: Wednesday, Sept 1, 7:00am
Return: Thursday, Sept 2, 7:00pm
Fee includes bus transportation, bus driver’s
gratuity, admission to all 3 sites in Bucks County
and the Late Renoir exhibit, hotel accommodations
one dinner, one breakfast and one lunch.
Double occupancy: $345 Single occupancy: $395
$50 deposit due at time of trip registration.
Balance due July 15.

731 Autumn in New England and New York’s
Hudson Valley
Day 1: The first stop on our 5-day tour will be the
Florence Griswold home in Old Lyme, CT, the finest
house of its time. Here, “Miss Florence” hosted and
nurtured artists of the American Impressionist Art
movement. The mansion displays stunning works of
Childe Hassam, Henry Ward Ranger, and others. We
will then enjoy dinner in Mystic, CT, and check into
our hotel. Day 2: We stroll the beautiful harbor
village of Mystic, with its dozens of 19th-century
buildings and its “Preservation Harbor,” where
craftsmen still practice the art of hand-making
wooden ships. After lunch (on your own), we travel
to Newport, RI, and tour a few of the Gilded Age
mansions where socialite families with such names
as Astor and Vanderbilt spent summer holidays. On
to Northampton, MA, and check in at our hotel.
Evening on your own. Day 3: In the morning, we go
to Amherst’s Main Street and the imposing brick
house where poet Emily Dickinson was born and
lived most of her life. Lunch on-your-own in
Amherst. Then we visit the National Yiddish Book
Center, opened in 1997, which resembles a humble
Russian shtetl (village) of a long-ago time. The
Center’s work, however, is state-of-the-art technically, rescuing Yiddish books and the culture the
contain. On the way to our lodging in Great
Barrington, MA, we stop in the lovely village of
Stockbridge.

even when difficult life situations may arise. Active Living Every Day will help
you stay active for your lifetime!
