OASIS Etiquette Here’s a refresher course on OASIS etiquette. Remember, part of one’s responsibility as an OASIS member is to take seriously the pleasure of others, a responsibility fulfilled by quietly attentive (or silently inattentive) and self-contained behavior. 1. Please no perfumes or hairsprays; many people are highly allergic to them. 2. Arrive on time to class and stay until completion. Arriving and leaving while the class is in session is discourteous. 3. No food or drinks in the classrooms. Our volunteers do wonderful work, but cleaning up after you is not part of their job description. 4. THOU SHALT NOT TALK while the instructor is speaking. 5. While learning about your health problems from the experts, remember to hold all questions and comments ‘til the end of the lecture. Plenty of paper for taking notes and writing down those questions will be provided. 6. Make sure cell phones and watch alarms are OFF. 7. The old standby: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Adapted and used with permission from Stagebill. Please remember we are guests in the Macy’s Home Store. Do not enter the store or OASIS before the posted hour of 10:00am. 77 OASIS in the Community Locations North Creek Community Center (NC) 20125 Arrowhead Road Montgomery Village, MD (301) 948-0110 Suburban Wellnes Center Father Hurley Blvd Northcreek Community Center MidCounty Highway Sunrise at Montgomery Village (SUNMV) 19310 Club House Road Montgomery Village, MD (301) 921-0445 Healthtrax/ Suburban Wellness Center (SWC) 20500 Seneca Meadows Parkway Germantown, MD (240) 686-4500 FH Temple Beth Ami (BA) 14330 Travilah Road Rockville, MD (301) 340-6818 88 Bethesda Chevy Chase Regional Services Center (B-CC) 4805 Edgmoor Lane Bethesda, MD (240) 777-8200 Friendship Heights Community Center (FH) 4433 S Park Ave Chevy Chase, MD (301) 656-2797 Democracy Blvd Wildwood Shopping Center St. Lukes Church Parking Lot So Grosvenor Lane Old Georgetown Road Cheshire Chesire Thank YOU! uth Special Thanks To ALL Volunteers Po rt St Lukes Episcopal Church (SL) 6030 Grosvenor Lane Bethesda, MD (301) 530-1800 The Heart and Soul of OASIS HOW TO FEEL FANTASTIC (without going to the gym or spa) Become an OASIS Tutor ONE hour; ONCE a week; ONE child k-4 at the child’s school. From pieces written in his honor to songs he heard in taverns, private homes and theaters, music was loved and valued by Franklin. Always an advocate for the common folk, he wrote in detail on the virtues of sentimental Scottish songs and the advantages of popular broadside ballads over formal opera as he experienced it in Paris and London. Franklin composed comic texts to be sung as drinking songs, such as “I Sing My Plain Country Joan,” in honor of his wife Deborah. And he was the subject of several songs even during his lifetime. Friday May 21 11:00am - 12:00pm Fee: $12 1 Session OASIS 29 502 Goya, the Duchess of Alba, and Other Women Joan Hart, Art History Instructor, Museum One, Inc. One of the great romances of the art world was the love affair between the Spanish master Francisco Goya and the Duchess of Alba. Or was it? Perhaps it was no more than a brief liaison, exaggerated by historians throughout the centuries? We will investigate this relationship through Goya’s various portraits of the duchess, including the infamous “Naked Maja” for which, it is said, she posed. Also Goya’s numerous paintings of other women, both humble and royal, will be discussed, with an emphasis on the excellent collection of the artist’s female portraits at the National Gallery of Art here in Washington. Further information about this topic may be found on the following websites: www.nga.gov/cgi-bin/pbio?12950 www.time.com/time/magazine/ article/0,9171,238607,00.html Friday May 21 1:00 - 2:30pm Fee: $10 1 Session OASIS 503 Turner: Reflections of Sea and Light Joan Hart, Art History Instructor, Museum One, Inc. Take a voyage with J. M. W. Turner, one of the greatest sea painters in the history of Western art. Born at the end of the 18th century, Turner was a visionary, impacting generations of artists after him, including the leader of the Impressionists, Claude Monet. Enjoy an overview of Turner’s depictions of the sea throughout his long career, starting with his epic naval scenes inspired by the Napoleonic Wars, to his often spectacular sunrises and sunsets, to his ground-breaking late works, often set in mid-ocean, full of swirling light and color. Comparisons will be made with such other master painters of the ocean as Monet, Winslow Homer, and Andrew Wyeth. Peace had not come easily. A volcanic eruption, a snowbound assembly, fear of renewed war, unconstitutional schemes for ratification, a last-minute “save” by a delegate who left a sickbedto vote, and a dash to Paris for the official ceremony – all contributed to the exciting end of America’s War of Independence. Thomas Jefferson starred in this drama, and Benjamin Franklin, as diplomat and scientist, wrapped it all up. See Congress’s 1984 Proclamation of Peace, written by Jefferson, in this fascinating presentation. Between the 12th and 15th centuries, bishops, abbots and kings competed to build ever taller, more exuberant Gothic cathedrals using new engineering and artistic techniques: pointed arches, ribbed vaults, flying buttresses and stained-glass windows. Sculptured church facades, stained glass and brilliantly illuminated manuscripts combined stories from the Bible, saints’ lives, and scenes from everyday life in ways that manifested a Christian worldview newly enthralled with nature. See classes 512 and 513. 512 The Gothic Achievement: Part I – Early Experiments and Transformations Judy Scott Feldman, Ph.D., Art Historian See the “birth,” in the 12th century, of Gothic art and architecture in the early experiments at the Abbey Church of Saint-Denis, Notre-Dame in Paris, and Laon Cathedral. Friday Jul 23 10:30am - 12:00pm Fee: $12 1 Session OASIS 513 The Gothic Achievement: Part II – Visions of Heaven in Stone and Gold Judy Scott Feldman, Ph.D., Art Historian The height of the Gothic achievement in art and architecture is manifest in the great “classic” cathedrals in France – Chartres, Reims, Amiens – and elsewhere throughout England, Germany, and beyond. See how painters, sculptors and architects created a new vocabulary of interior space, light, color and storytelling in sculpture and painting to evoke a singular goal: a vision of heaven rooted both in heaven and on earth. Explore the role of this art in the larger context of pilgrimage, prayer, religious ritual, political ceremony and community life.
