The saying goes “Time flies when you’re having
fun”, so we must be having a grand time since a new
year is here already. One reason for “tempus fugit” is all
the activities and special events offered throughout the year
within our community. Many of the clubs have new officers beginning in
January. This seems the perfect time to extend our gratitude and
appreciation to the outgoing officers for their time and dedication to their
organizations. We also thank the coordinators of all the various activities
who provide something for everyone.
In 2013, there will be a return of many of our popular events:
Dessert Theater, Valentine Dance, Casino Night, Variety Show, St.
Patrick’s Day Party, Dinner Theater, 4th of July Celebration,
Oktoberfest, Halloween Party, Tour of Lights, and New Year’s Eve
Party to name a few.
Some new additions will be coming in 2013. The Meadows pool will
be opening soon. The Community website will be activated in January
which will be an additional enhancement to our other communication
devices. ERTS will be holding its first Charity Ball also in January to
raise funds for more community AEDs. The Activities Office will be
sponsoring an Activities Fair in February and will hold New Resident
Receptions during the year.
The Crest Club will get a new look with the new library shelving and
repainting of the interior (please note that the Crest Club library will be
closed on Friday, January 4, and the entire building will be closed to all
activities January 7-13 and expected to reopen Monday, January 14).
It should be an exciting and entertaining 2013.
The Cornerstones team extends our wishes to all for “A Happy
and Healthy New Year.”

An Overview of 2012
Throughout
2012
the
association
accomplished so much from new
processes, cost saving measures, to
updated amenities. In 2012 the POA
implemented a new work order
system. This system allows us to keep
track of request from residents and
follow up in a more timely manner. In
2013 we will be improving this
processes even more. We have
reduced the amount of paper and
reports that needed to be produced,
and updated reports and eliminated
unneeded reports.
We streamlined many processes
and will continue to do so in 2013.
We have reduced the amount of
money spent on water and irrigation,
updated and renewed contracts, and
are in the process of putting together
long range goals for the community.
In 2012, we purchased new
cardio fitness equipment, pool
heaters,
microphones
and
soundboard, resurfaced the spa, restriped the RV lot and much more.
Communication/Website
2013 is going to be a great year!
If you updated your e-mail address
with the POA office, you should have
received your first e-mail from our
new e-mail system. While there will
be a few kinks and learning curve
with the new website, we expect that
residents will be much happier with
the communications and all of the
features that the website has
available.
There will be training classes
available to show off all of the
features and how to navigate the site.
Please look for e-mails and check the
online calendar for times.
I would like to thank residents

Excellence Award:
Civic Volunteerism and Advocacy
This
award
recognizes
community associations that actively
contribute to civic welfare and
improving society through creation of
volunteer programs to support local
and regional non-profit and charitable
causes. If you have any information
to turn in on the groups your activity
or club helps, please do so by
Tuesday, January 2. I would like to
have the application in by January 8.
If you need any assistance, please
contact me to set up an appointment.
If received, this award would be a
great honor for our community (and,
of course, bragging rights). We have a
very good chance of being
nominated. I just need your help and
information. I will do the rest.
New Owners and Renters:

Stonecrest community has a total of
1874 homes. There are a total of 2500

Stonecrest Board Committee (SBC)
By: Genie Beaulieu, Chair of the SBC
The New Year is a time for reflection on the past year and for making
resolutions for the future. I thought this might be a good time to begin a
new year with resolutions for homeowners.
Living in Stonecrest can and should be a great experience. Stonecrest
provides amenities, services, an aesthetically pleasant environment and a
sense of community; however, in order to create a harmonious
community and maximize the benefits of living here, every homeowner
must do their part such as making the following resolutions:
 I will become acquainted with the governing documents.
Stonecrest has three governing documents: Articles of Incorporation,
Bylaws, and the Declaration of Covenants. These documents can be found
online at stonecrestonline.com, CH-12 and in the Library. At the very least
every homeowner should thumb through these documents to get a feel for the
types of items the documents cover to know where to look for guidance
before taking action that could be at odds with the association.
 I will become informed on association issues and get involved.
Every homeowner should stay informed on matters relating to the
operation and governance of Stonecrest. This information can be obtained
by attending Board of Directors, SBC, ARC and CAC meetings; reading
information contained in the Cornerstones and posted on Ch-12 and the
Stonecrest website; calling the POA office, emailing the POA, call an
SBC member. Homeowners should also respond to requests for input
from the POA, boards and committees; and when possible volunteer for
committees.
 I will communicate in an appropriate manner with the Property
Owners Association and will work toward positive solutions.
Homeowners are not always going to agree with all of the provisions
of the governing documents or decisions made by the Board; however,
one of the biggest mistakes some homeowners make when
communicating their dissatisfaction is to be aggressive and rude.
Screaming insults or cursing at management, the SBC or the Board is not
an effective way to communicate concerns and reach an amicable
resolution. Before voicing dissatisfactions, homeowners should make sure
they are fully informed and are acting upon accurate information, and
then communicate concerns in a constructive and appropriate manner.
Also, homeowners should understand that Association Boards are
charged with balancing the best interests of Stonecrest, as a whole, with
individuals’ interests. As a result, the outcome a group of homeowners
are looking for may not always be possible. Living in a harmonious
community is what every homeowner wants; and homeowners, the Board,
committees, and management must all do their part.
The SBC’s next meeting is a workshop on Thursday, January 3, at
2:00 pm in the Community Center.
May we all have a Happy New Year and a wonderful retirement year.

Commentary
By Russell Griner,
Communications & Activities
Specialist
We’re working on quite a few
exciting projects, which will have
nothing but positive effects throughout
the community. At the forefront, our
POA Manager, Chad Peck, has been
named as a top 50 finalist for On-Site
Manager of the Year by the Association
Reserves. It is a nation-wide contest, and
a prestigious one in the Community
Association Manager field. For his
further consideration, he will need to
write a few essays regarding our
community, and produce a short video.
If any of you would like to help Chad
with any part of this project, please
contact him in the POA office.
Due to space limitations in the
Cornerstones, and the addition of user
profiles to the website on which I have
been working, we will no longer be
listing the birthdays in this publication.
Chris and I are looking for volunteers
to help us proofread this past year’s
listings, compare them with the
resident directory surveys from last
month, and help us put together a
(more) current list which will reside in
a binder in the Crest Club Library. If
you are interested in helping us
complete this, please come and see
Chris or myself in the Activities
Office.
Thank you!
Happy 50th anniversary to
Maryann and Ken Fluty
They were married on January 12,
1963 in San Antonio, TX. They
have a daughter living in Lake
Mary, FL. Celebration destination
unknown.

Library Update By Doris Spurk
The pace of activity in the library has picked up considerably since
our winter residents are back. The hardback and paperback librarians have
been shelving well over 1000 books a month, and we expect this to
escalate after our new shelves are installed in early January. The
volunteers will be packing up the book holdings on Friday, January 4. So
if you need books for the period from January 4 through 13, be sure to get
them earlier. The success of this well-used community resource is due to
the dedication of its dozen volunteers and who, in January, will be
working overtime as Stonecrest elves to make the transition to the
improved and expanded shelving.
Plans call for the library to be restocked on Friday, January 11. The
present inventory will be cleaned out and shelved first; then during the
month, the volunteers will filter in the books that have been in storage.
Your patience with this process is appreciated. The new modular shelving
system will expand the capability to house oversize hardbacks, larger
paperbacks, DVD's and CD's, club activity sign-up binders along with
other binders while providing greater ease of access for our population.
There will also be a new labeling system to improve the organization, be
more visible and best of all—stay in place. Please bring us your book
donations, books on CD and DVD's, including DVD's suitable for children;
just drop them in the blue return bins and share them with our many residents
who utilize the library. DVD's and CD's must be in their original jackets.
AARP Driver Safety Program
Drive Safer – Spend Less
By Maury Hamill
Our auto insurance rates go up as years accumulate even
with no accidents or citations, because seniors have more crashes
per miles driven. Learn ways to compensate for the changes in vision,
reaction time and hearing that contribute to our higher crash rate.
Earn a 3-year auto insurance discount by attending the AARP Driver
Safety program Friday, January 11, and Friday, January 25, at 1:00 pm in
the Community Center. Florida still requires two days; however, they are
much shorter than in the past. Check with your company to verify the
amount of the discount. Sign up in the "Driver Safety" binder at the Crest
Club. No driving and no tests.
BRING: Driver's license, AARP card (if member), pen/pencil and
check payable to "AARP" for supplies. Fee is $12 for members and $14
for others. One check per couple is fine. Call Maury Hamill 245-9617 if
you have any questions.
Volunteers Needed By Maury Hamill
The free dental clinic in Leesburg has two well-equipped offices and
an abundance of eligible patients. However, more volunteer providers are
needed. Dental assistants can be used immediately with no recent
experience necessary. Dentists and Hygienists, who are also urgently
needed, are required to obtain a limited license which is easily
accomplished. Sovereign immunity is provided meaning no liability
insurance is needed. Volunteering, as little as a half day each month, is
very much appreciated. If you have any interest, please, call Dr. Maury
Hamill at 245-9617 for further information.

Frequently, the variety we have planted may not be one of the more coldhardy varieties recommended for our area. You can increase cold
protection by planting on the south side of a building because most frigid
wind drafts are from the north and northwest. The building acts as a wind
break and also radiates heat which the plant absorbs.
Healthy plants withstand freezing temperature better than weak
plants, so it is important to follow all the recommended cultural practices.
We need to remember that when the tree is in its infant stage, it is still
very susceptible to freeze damage and must be protected at least for the
first 3-5 winters with Freeze Cloth or other suitable cover.
We noted last month that watering plants and trees heavily before a
freeze aids our freeze protection efforts. Moist soil holds heat better than
dry soil. Young trees will need to be protected during hard freezes. Cover
the entire plant to the ground, and anchor your cover to the ground. You
want to hold heat inside your cover. Placing Christmas lights at the base
of the tree will add two to three degrees of additional protection (do not
use the LED type lights for this).
A number of cold hardy varieties do well in our area. One of these is
Satsuma which originated in Japan and is now grown throughout the
world. Satsuma has been planted in North Florida for the past 60 years. It
is the most cold hardy commercial citrus and will emerge without injury
from temperatures as low as 15 degrees Fahrenheit. The tree is
moderately vigorous even though relatively small, it is extremely
productive. The peel is thin and separates easily from the fruit which is
quite sweet. The fruit usually matures in October to November and will
lose its quality if it stays on the tree too long. In 2 to 5 years, young trees
will begin to bear fruit. Under ideal condition most trees will bear 45
fruits in year two, 90 fruits in year three, and 135 fruits in year four.
Grafted plants can reach up to 6 feet tall and 20 feet wide. The root stock
affects the size of the tree and also the fruit quality.
The most common fungal disease in this area is greasy spot. The main
impact of this disease is reduced plant vigor. Normally, citrus leaves
function for 2-3 years before they fall, but with grease spot infection the plant
loses its leaves prematurely; thereby, reducing the tree’s vigor. Alternaria
brown spot is also seen a lot in this area. This can cause leaf spot, leaf drop,
fruit spot and fruit drop. A copper-based fungicide will offer some protection,
but good cultural practices will be more helpful. This includes properly
discarding infected leaves, and practices that will keep the plant healthy.

Veterans Club
By Ray LeBrun
Happy New Year.
This past year was very
busy with a variety of guests
attending our meetings. They included
a Wounded Warrior double amputee;
U.S. Army Recruiter; retired USAF C
-141 Loadmaster who took part in the
POW repatriation flights from
Vietnam;
a
contract
clinical
psychologist with the Department of
Defense; a speaker for Segway for
Vets; and a retired Navy Cryptologist.
We plan to continue providing
interesting guests at our meetings.
We are again looking forward to
sharing St. Patrick’s Day and
Veterans Day with our members and
residents. In April we will have our
annual picnic for members only.
Because our normal meeting day
falls on New Years Day, we are
moving this month’s meeting to
Tuesday, January 8, at same time,
3:30 pm, in the Community Center.
Payment of annual dues may be made
at that time.

Pebbles Club By Shelley Cetlinski
This is my last article for the Pebbles Club. I’ve been part of the
committee for 5 years and have had great help over the years. Our current
committee: Sheron Dotson, Ann Brooks and Marge Parnell have been an
asset and with their help we’ve had great parties and events. For two years
Frank and Dee Elliott have graciously volunteered to run our 50/50 tickets
sales. There are so many others who have helped out on a regular basis
and to all of them, thank you for everything you have done to make these
last 5 years so much fun.
Coming on board is a great group of volunteers headed by President
Kevin Collins, Vice President John Gagliano, and Marie Swartz, Howard
Peters and Colleen Kelly Rogers. They are looking forward to working
together and will appreciate any help you may offer.
The Valentine's Day Party and Dance will be held on Wednesday,
February 13. Sign up will begin on January 23. Donna Carrier will sing
and provide a wonderful selection of music for the evening. Please watch
for more information on Channel 12 and in the Pebbles Club binder.
All Pebbles Club events are open to all residents of Stonecrest and
their houseguests. Pebbles Club only charges enough to cover the cost of
each event. There are no membership dues or fees to be paid other than
the event fee. Payment is due at sign up for each event. Envelopes are
provided in the Pebbles Club binder, and a payment box is located there
for you to deposit your envelope.
Please continue to recycle your newspapers in the bin near the RV lot.
The money helps to offset the cost of Music Under the Stars, the 4th of
July Parade, the Tour of Lights in December and the New Year’s Eve
Party. There is a separate space there for your aluminum beverage cans
that the Softball teams use for their funding.

Computer Club By Norman Paddock
Here at Stonecrest we have a very active computer club
with over 640 members. Besides having the availability of an
outstanding modern and up to date computer room for use by
all residents after completing orientation, we also have
excellent services available to members.
Since non-members may not be aware of what is available, I will
cover 4 specific benefits.
 Weekly meetings at 1:00pm on Mondays, where a computer subject
is covered followed by a roundtable where attendees are invited to
ask questions, which generally can be resolved by someone in the
meeting. These meetings can be attended by non-members as well as
members.
 Workshops covering such topics as spreadsheets, Hallmark Card
making, Kindle, Nook, tablets, photo editing, movie making,
Windows 8, Mountain Lion, VHS to DVD conversions, eBay, Word,
Power Point and many more. Take a look at the sign up book in the
library to get more information on classes available for PC’s and
Macs. Membership is required to attend workshops. Members of the
club receive the monthly class schedule by email.
 A member may call one of our CUBS who will attempt to answer
the question or either meet you at the computer room or at your
home to “fix what’s broken” or walk you through a procedure.
 One-On-Ones, as a member, you can sign up in the book for a oneon-one if you have a problem and have a qualified member meet you
in the computer room to walk through the problem and find a
solution.
All of this, for $15 a year or $20 for a couple. If you are interested in
learning more or have questions, you can stop by the computer room in
the Crest Club anytime it is open or call Gary Crile at 233-8118 or
Norman Paddock at 205-2949.
Mac User Group By Dick Penndorf
Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday, January 21,
at 6:00 pm in the Crest Club Computer Room. (The Crest
Club is scheduled for painting and will not be available
for our use on January 7. Watch Channel 12 for the
latest update.)
Our club is dedicated to helping those who use or are
interested in iMacs, iPhones and iPads. Did you just get a new
one – or your first one? Join us and we’ll show you how to get the most
out of your new iMac, iPhone or iPad.
Apple has been updating programs on an ongoing basis, as have a
number of other software providers. We stay on top of the latest
developments and can work with you as you move into newer software.
We also demonstrate software (apps) at our meetings that we
personally find interesting and think you might too. Do you have an app
you’d like us to look at for you or that you want to share with others? Let
us know. So come on out to our meetings and bring your questions!

Grace Chapel
By Janet McGrath
Setting some goals for this New
Year? Here's mine from Philippians
3:13 "One thing I do, forgetting the
things which are behind, and
stretching forward to the things which
are before, I press on toward the goal
unto the prize of the high calling of
God in Christ Jesus."
After lots of years of living, I like
the challenge of forgetting all the bad
stuff that pulled me down, and then
the thought of stretching my mind and
my body sounds like a great idea. A
High School guidance counselor once
asked me, "What would you like to be
if you only had five years to live?"
That question has a much deeper
meaning now that I am so much closer
to that prize - to that high calling!
Grace Chapel's final event of last
year is worth remembering. Through
our fellowship, God provided clothing,
toys and food items for thirty-five
children at the Stanton-Weirsdale
School. We thank the Stonecrest Art
Society and some others for their
contributions and for our "happy
shoppers."
To kick off the new year we are
planning a group trip to the Holy Land
Experience in Orlando in January. We
would love to have you join us! Give
Pastor Dave a call at 233-9861 or visit
us Sundays at 9:00 am or for Bible

of Love”, featuring the story of Jane Eyre with singing, sound effects and
a cast of characters that will entertain you all evening. Ticket Sales for the

Our Variety Show is beginning to take shape. Our Director, Terry
Robertson, is finalizing the flow of the show which will be Friday and
Saturday, March 22 and 23. Rehearsals are
beginning, and the show entitled “America,
Land That I Love” should be a memorable
event. Mark your calendar and we will
have more information about ticket sales
next month.
The Dinner Theater for this year is scheduled for July 13
and July 20. Sonny is directing some of our performers in
the classic “On Golden Pond.” They are working hard to
ensure a great performance. Mark your calendar and
watch here for more information.
Make that resolution to come out and have some fun.
Make somebody laugh, dream or reminisce about things in their
lives. Come to our meeting this month on Tuesday, January 8, at 2:00 pm.
Members, note the change in the time for our meeting (2:00 pm instead of
3:00 pm) for this month only. The Veterans are meeting at 3:30 pm this
month.
January is the time for membership renewal. Annual dues are $3. Per
our by-laws, you must be a member of the Guild to participate in any of

For many people the
New Year begins with a list
of resolutions, things they
hope to accomplish or change in their
lives. One resolution could very well
be to see how their financial
circumstances could be improved. If
this is something you would like to see
happen in your life, consider joining
the Investment Club of Stonecrest to
learn how you could achieve this.
The Investment Club of Stonecrest
is open to all full-time residents, and
guests are always welcome to see if
this Club is a fit for their needs. The
next meeting will be on Thursday,
January 3, at 11:15 am backstage in
the Community Center. For more

There will be no
class in January. See you
the second Tuesday in
February!
A new vice president has been elected for the Garden
Club, and we congratulate Trudy Baiamonte for filling
the position. Her direction in providing informative and
interesting speakers and field trips for 2013 is most appreciated. If anyone
has a particular question about gardening or topic they would like
discussed, let Trudy know. She would be happy to find someone with
expertise in that area.
Brooke Moffis from the Sumter County Extension of UFI will be the
speaker for the January meeting, which will be held on Thursday, January 10,
in the Community Center. The "Meet and Greet" begins at 12:30 pm, and
the meeting starts at 1:00 pm. Brooke has spoken to us many times, and
her topic this visit is the "art" of pruning. She will inform us about the best
time of year to trim our trees and shrubs and also instruct us on how to
prune them. She is always happy to answer questions about any problems
you are having with your plants. She is a Garden Club favorite, and we
look forward to seeing her again. Refreshments will be served.
The drawing for the authentic Chinese Dinner for four to be prepared
and served by Bud Dow and Pat Vazquez in their home, will be held at the
February Garden Club meeting. Although Garden Club is sponsoring the
event, everyone in Stonecrest is eligible to buy chances to win. On
January 3 and 4, between 10:00 am and noon, a table will be set up in the
Crest Club to sell tickets for the raffle. The cost is $5 per ticket, and you can
buy as many as you like. Bud is well known in Stonecrest for his cooking
skills, and four lucky people will enjoy a wonderful evening in their home.
The winner will be announced after the February Garden Club meeting, and at
that time, a date for the dinner can be arranged with Bud and Pat.
Membership renewal for 2013 is ongoing. We'll be collecting dues
($5) and updating information at the January meeting.

When you sign up for a trip on
the bus sheets, and you want to be
seated at the show next to a
particular person who does not share your last name,
you must state next to your name to "sit with so and
so". The seats for the shows have to be pre-assigned,
and since I am not a mind reader, I can only guess at it
if you do not specify your seat mate. So please
remember to always state next to your name if it is
someone other than your spouse.
By the time you read this you should have received
our flyers for February: the Vienna Boys Choir on
February 11, and "Hooray For Hollywood" on
February 17. In addition, we have booked the Early
Bird Dinner Theatre for March 14 for their comedy/
mystery show and a fun afternoon, so note the date and
watch for our flyers.

I want to thank the loyal Club members, and especially my
"support group" for all their help this past year. This Club would not be
what it is without all your efforts. Hopefully, the attendance will continue
to grow this year.
We got the holidays off to a great start with our superb appetizers and
fun gift exchange. We had a great time and went home with some very
nice gifts. The dinner/dance we shared with the Del Webb Singles Club
was one of the hits of the holidays! I was glad to see so many of our
members in attendance. Hopefully, we can continue this tradition in years
to come.
Our next meeting is Wednesday, January 2, at 5:00 pm at the
Community Center. Food will be provided, probably pizza or sub
sandwiches (unless Bud volunteers to cook). We will be discussing the
leadership and focus for the coming year, so bring all your ideas!
This month's Birthday Dinner will be held on Thursday, January 17.
The location will be decided at our meeting on the 2nd. The sign-up sheet
will be available at our meeting, as well as in our binder at the Crest Club.
Don't forget to bring non-perishable items for the Food Pantry, $3 for
dinner, and your beverage of choice. Our meetings are open to all single
residents of Stonecrest. Hope to see you there!

Since everyone is still busy
celebrating the holidays, there will not
be a meeting on Friday, January 4.
However, Friday, January 11, is
probably the most important meeting,
as we plan activities for the coming
year. Bring any exciting projects, with
pictures or the actual finished items.
They will be presented to the group
and voted on. Since the Crest Club is
being painted at that time, we will
gather in one of the rooms behind the
stage at the Community Center.
Friday, January 18, will be
scrapping and paper-crafting. Paulette
Lebowitz will show us some
interesting methods of design. On
Friday, January 25, we will be making
February table arrangements for the
Summerfield Suites Assisted Living
facility. This project will be led by
Carol Currence and Pat McClung.
Sign up in the Craft/Scrapping binder
in the Crest Club if you plan on
attending.
Any resident wanting to join our
group, we get together at 9:30 am on
Friday mornings in the Crest Club.

Stonecrest Art Association By Paula Glass
The Art Association welcomes the New Year and looks
forward to many exciting classes and guest speakers. We
ended 2012 with a great 3-hour class with Tony and Tina and
their "Painting for Pleasure" methods and a wonderful evening
on the town with dinner at the Arnold Palmer Country Club; a lovely way
to end the year. Thanks to Elaine Fezza for making the arrangements for
the Holiday Party.
The new officers are: President Paula Glass, Secretary Luz Mari
Pelaez, Treasurer Judy Fleck, and Hospitality Blanca McGown. We need
a vice-president to replace Linda Sherrod. The vice-president plans the
classes and speakers. This job can be split up among several people.
Thank you, Linda, for all your hard work the past 3 years and the
wonderful programs. We wish her the very best.
Our next meeting, January 14, will be behind the stage in the Ladies
Dressing Room, 10:00 am at the Community Center. Helen Gromadzki or
one of the teachers from the Colored Pencil Painters Guild will give a
Demo/ Talk about their passion, Painting with Pencils (getting the wax to
melt). We can then decide if we would like a class on this technique.
On January 29, Julie McGlone has agreed to come back and give
another class on Batik. She has 8 new patterns for us and will also show
us how to work on materials like silk or canvas. This class will be in the
Crafts Room, starting at 9:00 am. Please sign up in the Art Association
binder, and we will send more information.
Please remember dues are due in January. Please bring $15 to the
meeting. Happy New Year.

M’ Lady’s
Handwork
By Phyllis Davenport
If ever there is a time
for new beginnings, this must be it.
How exciting to usher in a new
beginning on something that caught
your interest a long time ago but was
put out of sight. You were probably
unsure how to start the project again.
Our group can assist you with
knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, cross
-stitch, rug hooking, and hock
embroidery.
We welcome anyone who is
interested in completing a project that
was started long ago. Join us every
Wednesday morning from 9:30 until
11:30 am in the Crest Club craft room.
For more information, call Phyllis
Davenport (245-1679), or Tempy

Stonecrest
Book Club
By Linda Gant
The January meeting of the
Book Club will be held on Thursday,
January 24, at the new Brownstone
Pub (Stonecrest Country Club) at
noon. We will have lunch and discuss
“Don't Bank On It” by Virginia
Daniels. The author has created a
fictionalized account of what happens
when fraud is discovered at her bank.
While auditing loan files, Gayle
Summerfield reviewed one small bad
commercial loan. That one loan opened
a $60,000,000 Commercial Loan Fraud
Investigation. Fraud has to be internally
and externally investigated. That is the
law.
All Stonecrest residents are
welcome. If you have any questions,
please contact Linda Gant, 307-9826.

Stonecrest Democratic Club
By Nancy Noonan
The next meeting for the Democratic Club is scheduled
for Thursday, January 17, at 7:00 pm in the Community Center.
Although the 2012 elections and the outcomes seem to represent
a past issue, the Democratic Club knows that political matters and
future elections will come again soon. In order to be prepared for 2014, I
have asked Joyce Blake, Marion County's State Committee Woman to the
Florida Democratic Party in Tallahassee to give us an accounting of the
votes in our Stonecrest Precinct, 3530, from the November 6 general
elections (local, state and national), and provide our membership with "the
plans for Marion County Dems going forward", and how each Club will
work to accomplish this plan.
We are beginning a new year, and we want our meetings and our
activities to strengthen our ability to be a proactive membership. Dues for
the 2013 year remains $10 and will be collected at the January 17 meeting
by Treasurer Herman Furletti.
We will hold a 50-50 drawing at the conclusion of the business
meeting and refreshments will be served. I look forward to seeing
Stonecrest Dems at this important meeting.
Quilt Quips By Linnea Qualter
A joyous New Year to all of you. Now that the holiday rush is
over, we can return to our “normal” daily activities. May this New
Year bring health and happiness to each of you.
Recently three members made sandwiches during our “meeting” (not
with food). These sandwiches consisted of putting
batting between a quilt top and a backing. We then
use safety pins to secure the layers in preparation for
machine quilting or tying with yarn. It's more fun
pinning during quilt club because your work is on a
table and it doesn't take as long (see picture). Our
donations are machine washed and machine dried so
they need to be stable. Thanks to Linda Courtney for
her donation of batting, fabric, and other
miscellaneous items!
If you would like to see what Stonecrest Needlers group does, would
like to learn how to quilt, are stuck on a project and need some input as to
how to continue or enhance your work, come see us on Wednesdays in the
Crest Club Arts and Crafts Room. We meet at 1:00 pm. Inquiries, contact
Linnea Qualter 307-1227 or Jeanne Hudson, 245-9223.
Painting with George By George Binaco
Happy New Year and good wishes to all. We are hoping to
see you with us on Monday evenings from 6:00 - 9:00 pm in
the Crest Club. (Please note this exception: the Crest Club will
be closed on January 7.) Discover the artist within you. You'll love it.
Help is available for the asking, but this is not a class. We are people who
enjoy wielding a paint brush and having the company of nice folks all
around us.

Rollin’ Stones RV Club By Doris Spurk
Due to the closing of the Crest Club during the week
of January 7, there will not be a meeting this month.
During the regular meeting time; however, the officers
will be getting together to plan the upcoming trips to St.
Augustine and Daytona Beach. The next monthly meeting of the RV Club
will be on Monday, February 4, at 4:00 pm. Additional details for the
annual potluck on Saturday, February 16, will be discussed; the potluck
will start with hors d'oevres at 5:30 pm.
Those Stonecrest RVers, who attended the December meeting with our
special guest speaker from Camping World, are especially invited to join
the Rollin' Stones at the February meeting and attend the potluck and
upcoming club trips in 2013.
Just a reminder, that starting in 2013, the RV lot storage fee will be
collected only on an annual basis. You should have received an invoice in
December from the POA.
If you haven't signed up yet for the three-night Daytona Beach rally
starting on Friday, April 26 thru 29, please contact Doris Spurk. The rally
will be held at International RV Park which offers full hook-ups on
concrete pads. The park is in a convenient location for many of the
attractions in that area. We've scheduled this rally for a weekend so those
that are still working could join us. This is a great way to get to know
members of the group, share some RVers' fellowship and have a nice
weekend get-away. Note that reservations for this trip are made through
Doris and not the park. The reservations for the St. Patrick's Day weekend
rally are made directly with Stagecoach RV Park in St. Augustine. Call
Doris or Dick Rollins for additional details.

Tennis Talk By Walt Yesberg
Walk & Talk
Tennis Changes - Now that the winter season is upon us,
please note:
1. Most of the snowbirds and winter residents are back. We are, of
course, glad to see them, but the courts can be crowded on some
mornings. Just be patient, and enjoy the socialization. If it gets too
crowded, we can always expand our schedule to other days and
times.
2. Mornings can be cool, and it seems reasonable to move our tennis
times to the winter schedule. That means that we’ll start at 8:30 am.
As always, we’ll play on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
3. Short Court Tennis will resume in January, probably on the second
Friday of the month, starting at 6:00 pm. The schedule is not set in
stone, so if you’d prefer another day or time, please let me know.
What We Need - We desperately need a small bulletin board to post
tennis news, updates, and changes. I envision something like the one at the
entrance to the pickleball courts, but smaller. I’ll see if the POA can help
us, but it may have to be a do-it-yourself project. If so, we’ll need a plan,
volunteer labor, and some (not much) money. I’ll keep you informed, but
please let me know if you have any thoughts on the subject.
Tennis Update - Are you on the “Tennis Update” mailing list? To get
current information, schedule changes, and event news via e-mail, please
send your e-mail address to: [email protected].
Farewells - We’re sorry to be losing two of our tennis players: Nancy
Roeser and Harold Stauffer. I’m not sure where Nancy (and David) were
heading, but we wish them health and happiness. Harold (and Jane) will be
heading back to familiar courts in Richmond, but we hope they’ll take
with them warm memories of happy times in Stonecrest.
Bocce By Bud Dow
The winter bocce sessions will begin on Mondays at
10:00 am and noon on January 14 and conclude on February

Stonecrest
Motorcyclists
By Jim Waddell
Now that the weather is
more pleasant for riding, the bikes are
coming out and hitting the road. There
are many in Stonecrest that would like
to meet and ride with other neighbors.
We just need a central contact to get
started. Depending on the interest, we
will decide if a formal club is the way
to go. For now, let’s get started with
informal rides and get togethers. Some
of us have started riding on Friday
mornings. We have a phone list and
emails addresses and will notify
everyone of start times. Call Jim at
245-9735 if interested or want more

Zumba
By Cindy Farwell
Happy 2013! We are looking
forward to increasing our class
participation so more of us will benefit
from a healthy and happy start to the New
Year!
I am pleased to announce the new
officers of our Zumba Club for 2013:
President Margaret
Conboy, Vice
President Paula Glass, Secretary Cindy
Farwell, and Treasurer Bunny Mauthe.
Many thanks go to Brenda Crawford, who
served as Treasurer last year, and did an
awesome job.
Christie Etters will be our new Zumba
toning instructor on Wednesdays, from
12:30 - 1:30 pm while Deborah Gartner is
recuperating from an injury. Christie does
a great job and you will enjoy her energy
and personality. Her songs are great and
the pace of the class is just right. We are
lucky to have Matt White continue his
classes Tuesdays at 7:00 pm and again on
Saturday at 8:00 am. Both instructors tell
us they look forward to teaching at
Stonecrest. Classes are still just $4 each
and take place in the Community Center.
Classes will be held on January 2, 5
and 8. We will cancel classes on January
12, 15 and 16 due to the Zumba cruise.
We will be back in session on Saturday,
January 19. Please mark your calendars.
We are excited to announce that
classes on January 22, 23, and 25 will
offer a great incentive. Any member, who
brings a guest on any of those 3 days, will
get in free and so will the guest. Any new
participant will need to fill out a waiver.
We are looking to add more members to
our roster and know that they will be
hooked once they witness the fun and
variety of exercising the Zumba way!
I will continue updating you through
email. If you are unsure if you are on the
Zumba email list, please send me your
email address: [email protected]. If
you no longer wish to be included, please
let me know, as well.
We are looking forward to a
tremendous third year of Zumba at
Stonecrest!

Billiards
Ladies Travelling Billiards Team
By Mary Arterburn
We recently had a Wine and Cheese “Get to Know Us” gathering
to attract new members for our team. A big thanks to Marie Campbell for organizing this successful event and donating the wine. We
had several ladies join us, and they have since come to practice with
us on Mondays (from 1:00 – 3:00 pm). We hope they will decide to
join our team.
We are excited to have Michelle Peiser as our new Captain and
Jan Clements as our new Co-Captain. We are also pleased to have
almost all of our ladies back again this year: Mary Arterburn, Marie
Campbell, Meg Clark, Jan Clements, Jean Hiltz, Michelle Pesier,
Sally Seigworth, and Dorothy Malpass.
Our 2012 - 2013 season started on November 11, and we’ve
played three games so far. Thanks to the hard work and perseverance
of our new Captain, our league will now be handicapped. This will
make our games more competitive as it will give some of the less
skilled teams a better chance to compete. We are looking forward to
another fun-filled year.
We welcome any ladies who live in Stonecrest to join our team.
Just call Michelle Pesier (708-567-5350) or Jan Clements (446-6343).
You can also just come up on any Monday from 1:00 – 3:00 pm while
we are practicing, and see if the game is for you.
Men’s Billiards Travel Team
By Phil Braun
Winter play has started, and the team won four of the five games
played in November, putting them in fourth place. There were only
three matches in December: Mid-FL Gators, Brittany Estates and Blue
Parrot. These results of these interesting matches will be reported in the
next issue.
Larry Stoever is back from his cruising, and Don Goerlich has
rejoined the team after spending the summer in his home state of
New York.
As mentioned in last month’s column, The Villages have set-up
classes for billiards players in order for players to improve their
skills. The classes will be held for six weeks. Forms are posted in the
billiards room or call me at 347-2882.
9-Ball Tournament
By Dennis Crosskno

February 7, at 11:00 am. There is a $10 entry fee, and the signup

invited to participate, so join in on the fun, and shoot with some of
Stonecrest’s finest. Call Dennis Crosskno at 245-2495 for more
information.
