We don’t plan on making memories…it just
happens. It started in 1980 on my first trip
to Kenya with A&K and our guide, Ambrose
Gachui. His passion for his country, his animals, his people has brought me back again
and again and I can remember every minute of that 12 day trip. My first real cruise,
from Bangkok to Bali was on a cruise line
long gone. But the captain, who introduced
us all to the “green flash”, the crew, the
food, the ports, are forever imprinted on
my mind, a smiling memory. Seeing the Taj
Mahal from the window of the Oberoi on
both my birthday and my anniversary, realizing it is a testament to love, on that year,
in that place, on those days, will never be
forgotten. However, the best memories of
all came full circle, when I traveled with my
children and grandchildren, back to Kenya
and met Ambrose at the Mount Kenya Safari Club. So I guess we are right, we don’t
plan on making memories, they sneak up
on us with the retelling and sharing of our
journeys. Isn’t it time you started yours?

Your Advisors Travel Update
Seeing Cape Town at Leisure- Meredith McCleary
Sight Seeing Bus-ride scenic tours - One of the most exciting things I tried that time had
not permitted previously was a city tour on the RED sight-seeing bus. It stops at or near 30
major area attractions. There are seven color coded tours from which to choose. Tickets
may be purchased on the bus/V&A Station or the Long Street station. What a great fun
way to get the logistical layout of the city! The price is minimal, there is hop on/hop off
service, throughout the day with the day pass. Go to www.citysightseeing.com for more
information. I enjoyed mingling with the locals and meeting others like me, just looking!
Long Street stroll – Before taking the bus tour I visited the Cape Cadogan and Mores Quarters hotels. The Cape Cadogan is small, charming and intimate, attractive
and tastefully furnished. It is a National Landmark facility therefore there are stairs and
steps which may be a challenge for some. The Mores Quarters are located across a
small street from the Cadogan. The location (small, quiet, and private) close to Kloof
Street with connection to (great little walk – I did it) Long Street and the Markets.
Good for shops, food and entertainment and options with the locals along Kloof Street.
Two Oceans Aquarium – Departing from my Day tour around the city at the V&A Waterfront, I decided for the first time in almost 20 years to visit the Two Oceans Aquarium.
What a treat! Having grown up on the Gulf of Mexico with one of the first aquariums in
Florida, I thought I had seen it all. This one is better than the views at Atlantis in Nassau. It is really huge with an awesome display of aquatic life from the Atlantic and Indian
Oceans. Yes, in Florida I live on the Atlantic and we have a Seaquarium, but this is truly
known as the largest one in the world!! There is something for everyone, from feathered
friends near the oceans, otters, fishes, to diverse and other related ocean animal and
plant life. One can see, touch, feel and even dive to interact with various collections. I
stayed high and dry. Well worth the minimal costs. Tickets can be purchased online. There
were as many excited adults like myself, as kids and jumping
babies in strollers at the sights they saw!! www.aquarium.co.za
The Red Shed Market – Leaving the Aquarium I decided to
explore the RED Shed and Workshop located adjacent to the
aquarium and the V&A Waterfront. The smell of African food
cooking in the indoor shops (too many to decide) yummy-yummy! I finally settled on a fruit smoothie before moving on to
the arts and crafts area. This is a unique collection of crafts to
include Africa Fashions and art of every medium. Beautiful reasonable priced items. Since
I could set up my on shop from my own collection, I passed through and after an hour
or so it was dinner time. I headed to my favorite restaurant for great seafood in Mall and
people watched over a good cold Africa libation with fish and chips. www.southafrica.net
Driving the Cape coast - My next day was another first adventure for me as a friend
took me for a private drive day tour of the coastal ocean area
of False Bay, enroute to visit my dear friend Eddie Daniels,
a former prisoner serving at Robben Island, (author of There
and Back) and a longtime friend of President Nelson Mandela.
Following a great visit and lunch at his country club, my driver
and I went to visit the wine country! In route I stopped at Victor
Verster Prison now known as Drakenstein Correctional Center,
the last prison to house Mr. Mandela prior to his release. The
site is now closed to visitors but we were allowed to enter briefly to visit the monument.
Paarl and Franschhoek (Wine Country) – Quaint towns, shops and wineries, I decided
to stop in Paarl at the Fairview Cellar Door (dating back to 1633) for a fine wine and goat
cheese tasting compliments of my driver/guide. The wine, bread, and fruit preserve accompaniments are to die for! Need I say more – I returned with a blackberries type preserve to be eaten with sharp goat cheese. I eat it on hot bread, ice cream or just a spoonful. Next to great tastings is a visit to the restaurants and don’t miss the infamous Goat
Tower! Yep – goats in their own lighthouse tower –“here’s looking at you…bahhh! A great
stop off or treat - FANTASTIC scenery of vineyards and farm country. Nothing was better in
Cape Town than my stay in and Executive Suite at the Cape Grace Hotel front and center
in V&A Waterfront. Next to the best whiskey tasting at the bar, the High Tea is exceptional.
Once you go – you know!
South Africa & Botswana
Sylvia Berman
From the beauty of South Africa, Botswana
and Zambia to the Land of the Midnight
Sun, it has been an exciting year. After 6
days in Cape Town, Grace and I took a two
hour drive north to the Little Karoo and the
Sanbona Preserve. You know how your
mind pictures the place you are going to
visit? Well, we weren’t prepared for the
accommodations, the incredible food and
the game viewing. White rhino and even
white lions. Three entirely different lodges
perfect for those that want to get away from
it all, among a landscape that changed
with each turn in the road. Then we flew to
Madikwe and stayed at the Madikwe Hills
Lodge for another day of safari. From there
we flew to Botswana and the safari camps
of Chitabe, Sandibe, Xaranna and a real,
primitive tented camp. No running water,
no electricity, but a staff that made you feel
at home and served some of the best meals
I have had anywhere. Ask us about the videos of the elephants crossing the Chobe
River (and the baby that was almost taken
by a crocodile.) When Grace returned to
Florida, I continued to Zambia, this time to
visit more than just Victoria Falls. From the
lodges at Old Mondoro, and the boat ride
to see Chiawa, Sausage Tree and Potato
Bush, I went upriver so that I could overnight at the new five star Anabezi lodge.
The owner drove me to the airstrip and we
were so busy comparing notes that I almost missed the flight to Nkweli. This Robin
Pope complex gave me an opportunity to
see their two bedroom house and envision
a page from Harry Potter, when I saw the
Luangwa Safari House. I was waiting for
someone to fly out of the windows of one of
the four bedrooms. Every place I saw held
something special for you. The learning
continues and just makes traveling to these
wonderful countries easier and easier.

I recently traveled to one of the most magical places in the world: South Africa. I was
lucky enough to enjoy a 12 day educational
journey through Johannesburg and Cape
Town, along with our advisor Rebecca
Romero, with a grand finale of a safari. We
spent many days listening to hoteliers describe their fabulous properties, one better
than the next. Each speaker took us through
a different part of Southern Africa through
their eyes. This educational trip was invaluable to me as the assistant to a South Africa
expert. I finally understand the passion and
love that Sylvia has for this amazing country. My time in Africa was an out of body
experience to say the least. Seeing the animals in their natural environment and the
ability to get so close to them is definitely a
top reason to travel to Africa. Once I arrived
I came to the realization that Africa has so
much more to offer. Between the culture,
people, and natural beauty of the country
I could go back time and time again each
time feeling just as in awe as the first time.
3 Hours From NYC. A world Away.
The final bell in school rings for my three
boys and they are super excited to take a
summer trip before camp starts. First, we
get to celebrate my parent’s 50th wedding
anniversary in NYC. So, where to go with
the boys that’s relatively close to New York
where they can experience great outdoor
activities and enjoy the cooler weather
up north? New York state alone has so
many exciting vacation destinations that it
could fill a whole newsletter. These days
though, everyone is talking about Montauk,
on the very eastern edge of Long Island.
Montauk is stunning in its physical beauty.
Miles of craggy shorelines, great beaches
and water, water everywhere. Fabulous
restaurants and stunning scenery have
made it especially popular with the jet set
crowd. The newly refurbished Gurney’s
Resort and spa is a great place to experience views of the coast plunging into the
sea while enjoying a first rate food and
spa experience. My wife and I snuck out
one night to enjoy the local fare at the
Crow’s Nest restaurant and were taken in
by the setting and ultra-hip atmosphere.
What better way to enjoy the beaches than
by taking surfing lessons at the world famous Ditch Plains beach. Here my boys
spent endless hours learning to surf despite the cool water temps. We explored
the lighthouse to take in views of surrounding states and rolled down 80 ft. sand
dunes. We capped off great days with a
beach barbecue and a unique Montauk
experience. They allow controlled fires
on the beach. My boys delighted by being able to play in the sand while at the
same time make s’mores by the fire. Sitting by the crackling fire, I couldn’t get
over how close yet so far this whole trip
was from the city. For me, I know we had
a great vacation when I hear everyone
in the family say those treasured words,
“ Dad, can we do this again next year?”

Supporting Indigenous Tourism Initiatives
As an anthropologist I like to seek out
unique cultural experiences both for my
clients and for myself when I travel. I also
have a strong desire to make sure that local communities benefit from tourism. So on
a recent trip to
Mexico, I decided to try a
tour with Community Tours
Sian
Ka'an.
They are an
indigenousrun
community
tourism
enterprise run by and for the local Mayan
communities. Tour guides are all trilingual
(Mayan, Spanish, and English) and professionally-trained. Their tours are centered
around the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve
just south of Tulum and the Riveria Maya.
Because all of the guides are local to the
area they can teach their guests not just
about the culture and history of the locations they visit, but they also have extensive
knowledge about the natural world. We did
a great tour visiting a small Mayan village
where we were able to visit a Mayan school
and let our child play with the local kids. We
visited local soapmakers and beekeepers
to see these small sustainable village enterprises. I also spent a lot of time discussing
with them the impacts of tourism on the region and how they are working to make sure
the local indigenous population gets to reap
the benefits as well. One of the most popular tours that they run visits the Biosphere
Reserve and begins with a visit to the archaeological site of Muyil, where the guide
explains about ancient and present-day
Mayan culture. From their the tour makes
their way to the boat where guests regularly
see all types of wildlife, including manatees,
as they crisscross pristine lakes and rivers.
Once they reach an ancient Mayan canal
everyone jumps out of the boat and floats
with the gentle current through crystal clear
waters. An awesome experience. Back at
Community Tours Sian Ka'an's headquarters they have a small museum dedicated
to the Mayan people, a gift shop of local handmade crafts, a restaurant serving
Mayan specialties, and a butterfly garden
where they are trying to protect endangered
butterfly species. Overall, they are a model
for successful, sustainable eco-tourism.
I am happy I was able to support their initiatives, and I look forward to sending you there
to have your own amazing experiences.

The year is off and running! As a family we headed to the fabulous Ritz Carlton Bachelor Gulch, CO in March for spring break. We flew
directly into Vail and only had a short 20 min. drive to this amazing ski in/ski out resort. On arrival our first impression was being greeted
by valets clad as wrangler cowboys . They escorted us inside where we met the official ambassador of the resort, Bachelor, a St. Bernard puppy. He was snuggled up by the fireplace. After an amazing day of skiing, my husband and I enjoyed the spa, complete with a
grotto. S’mores by the outdoor fire-pit, live music, naturalist programs and delicious meals completed this fantastic vacation. A cozy
mountain getaway for sure! For the kids Easter break in April, we decided to split the 2 week vacation up by Skiing in California and then
enjoying the beach on Maui. Wanting to try something new we headed out to Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort in California. The scenery
transitions from barren Mohave Desert landscapes , to historical landmarks like Manzanar National Park, Whistler Fish Hatchery, along with ghost towns and Hot springs . While at Maui we stayed at the Fairmont Kea Lani
Resort . This all suites resort had the perfect location right on the Polo Beach in Wailea. The staff was warm
with true Aloha spirit that you felt immediately upon arrival. We were greeted with leis and a refreshing punch.
The Fairmont had just undergone a massive remodeling project which was evident everywhere. True Aloha
spirit ran through this entire property. The suites are massive with a nice entry area, roomy living room, separate bedroom and a huge wrap around lanai. On property we found a waterslide adult only area , 3 pools and
everyone’s favorite - a swim up bar! Included in the stay was hula lessons, outrigger canoe trip, professional
photography session, lei making, etc. We took a helicopter tour of the island with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters.
We flew over humpback whales passing the shores of Maui on their journey back north of the summer, truly magical.
Surfing, hiking, swimming and fishing completed our island visit. As most married couples, my husband and I like to
do a date night of sorts. Since we were both were in the mood for Greek food, we headed to Athens, Greece. We
wandered the cobblestone streets, passing the marketplace built in 415 BC, statues and temples for Zeus, Athena,
Olympus, Hephaistos. The Parthenon. In Athens there are two amazing Virtuoso luxury hotels. The King George
and the Grande Bretagne. They sit side by side and have amazing views of the Acropolis. The King George, even
with it’s smaller scale, was quite impressive. No two rooms are alike. Each room is unique and individually furnished
with gorgeous furnishings. The landmark Grand Bretagne speaks grandeur from the moment you walk in, with its
antiques and old world charm. The last night we had dinner in Voula, just a short drive from the city center, it lays
along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and overlooks the Greek Islands. At sunset the whole sky came alive. It
offers not only lovely walking paths along the shore but upscale shopping and dining. Refreshed and renewed, we
returned home, just in time to plan our next adventure!

Why do You Travel?
Near Cap Spartel, Morocco, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean. Photo by
Globus tour guide, Ramon Permanyer
Recently Joann Barnard, CTC, sent the
Wasserman family from North Carolina on
an amazing tour of the Iberian peninsula
( Spain, Portugal and Morocco), Steeped
in ancient history, from vestiges of Roman
and Moorish conquest, Spanish reconquest to the present-day regimes and religions, this Southern European peninsula
fascinates travelers. From mountains to
sea, the terrain varied, as did the people
and places. Highlights included visits to
UNESCO World Heritage sites such as
Sintra, Alcazar and Alhambra; and forays
to sample local cuisines, music and cultures . Globus took care of the logistics
of transport, lodging , food and optional
excursions-- under the vigilant care of
main tour guide, Ramon Permanyer, and
local expert guides in the main cities.
Simply put, we had the honeymoon of a LIFETIME — We’re sure this was in part due to our newlywed high, but we also think it
was because of where we were, South Africa. We started our adventures in Zambia where we got to visit Victoria Falls and swim in
the Devil’s Pool. It felt so unreal being atop one of the most powerful waterfalls in the world and so thrilling to hang off of the edge!
From there we continued to Kruger to begin our safari leg of the trip. This was by far our favorite part (though admittedly it’s hard
to choose!), it was unlike anything we have ever experienced. The lodge was gorgeous and secluded with absolutely amazing and
attentive service, and the guides were knowledgeable and personable and able to answer any of our questions. The wildlife was absolutely incredible, you get SO close to the animals! And best of all, even though you’re able to almost touch the animals, you leave
with an immense respect for them and the untouched habitat in which they live. It’s truly inspiring and made us feel so grateful that
we got to be part of their natural experience — how it should be. After safari we went to the wine country just outside of Cape Town
(Franschhoek and Stellenbosch). It was such a charming and adorable little town with amazing food and even better wine. We stayed
at one of the best bed and breakfasts (Akademie Street Boutique Hotel and Guest House) in the world; the staff was kind and helpful
and made our experience that much more personal and comfortable. Finally we headed to Cape Town, what a culturally-rich city! We
enjoyed a full day of touring and learning, and on a different day went cage diving with great white sharks! This experience is not for
the weak of heart, you are warned! On our last day we did some of our own exploring and came to the conclusion that South Africa
has some of the nicest people, most beautiful views and best food we’ve ever had. All in all, our honeymoon was the perfect mix of
relaxation and adventure, and left us with an awe and wonder we will never forget. As our amazing tour guide said, “Once you have
Africa in your blood, it’ll never leave you…” — we couldn’t have said it better ourselves. ---Jackie Zima

Bahamas- Candace Andreozzi
The Bahamas, with 700 islands that make up this country, images of kicking back surrounded by white sandy beaches, balmy breezes, pristine turquoise waters and the occasional rum punch come to mind. Only an hours flight from South Florida, some come for the
adventures; to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and to relax among the swaying Palm trees. Whatever the reason, you are
sure not to be disappointed. I am cruising around on a private motor yacht, moving from one beautiful island to the next, soaking up
the sun, fishing, and enjoying the laid back culture of the islands. Along the seas, I have found some special treasures. Not of pirates
but special resort properties tucked away only accessible by plane or boat.
Eleuthera - this archipelago, East of Nassau, hosts a wonderful Virtuoso jewel known as The Cove. Private bungalows and 3 bedroom cottages make up this enchanting property. Infinity pool and white, sandy beach coves stretch along the coral headed coast.
Nearby, enjoy lunch or dinner at Ocean Tally, a beautiful spot perched high above the ocean on rugged coral cliffs.
Abaco - picture quaint villages, awesome sunsets - rum punch. This party island is popular year round with travelers. Fly into Marsh
Harbour and make your way to Hope Town. Many "cays" - pronounced "keys" by the locals, surround this island chain. Great Guana
Cay has the ever popular Nippers Beach Bar, Sea Spray is located near Tahiti Beach and countless other
hot spots to numerous to name. Heading South to Winding Bay, is the secluded resort of The Abaco Club at
Winding Bay. Rooms are spacious with a very tropical feel, outdoor shower and all the water toys laid out in
a pristine beach. Enjoy golf, tennis, bicycles or just a nap in one of the many hammocks. Near by is Pete's
Pub accessible only by boat. Enjoy the owners fantastic bronzes, available for purchase.
Staniel Cay - home of the famous swimming pigs. As the name implies, a trip to Pig Beach will take you on
a Bahamian safari. Be sure to take left overs and fresh water-they'll swim to your boat to eat and drink. You
can fly into Staniel and stay at Staniel Cay Yacht Club in one of their quaint cottages overlooking the marina.
You may get the chance to swim with the gentle nurse sharks that call the marina home.
Back in Nassau, Island House is found near the exclusive, gated community of Lyford Cay. Simply beautiful
boutique property owned by locals. Head to Mahogany House for a taste of California, Bahamas style. 30 bungalows comprise this
picturesque getaway. Spa, pool, 3 dining venues all included away from Nassau proper. Bahamas-so much more to see and so close.

Cathie Inman Family Cruise
I recently had the delight to travel with my immediate family….all 11 of us!
Not an easy task trying to get everyone together but my parents planned a family reunion on board Royal Caribbean’s “Enchantment of the Seas”
with my sister, brother and his wife and their grandchildren.
We had a BLAST for a four night sailing to the Caribbean….first day on RCCL’s pristine private island (Coco Cay)
and has a ton of water activities to keep you busy all day.
The next day, we stopped in Nassau…even with four other ships in port, it was so easy to get in and out
of the Bahamas Port area and there were a lot of taxis available to take to Atlantis or venture off to see
the island. And shopping is right out of the port entrance….how convenient! The people in Nassau are
so friendly, helpful and welcoming. Worth the stop just to witness the changes in the island! And the
last day, we docked in Key West….another welcome surprise. Not a busy day in Key West so shopping,
touring and dining was easy. Lots of great sales and purchases! The ship was the best part of the trip! The Enchantment has been
newly enhanced and was well appointed with a rock climbing wall, bungee trampoline, 3 pools, a jogging track and video game arcade.
Not to mention, duty free shopping onboard! My family dined together (11 at a big round table!) each night and had the same waiters
taking care of us and calling us by our first names after the first 5 minutes of meeting them. They anticipated our every need…even
when we didn’t think we had a need! And then to top off the last night, we made a reservation at Chops Grille Steakhouse….excellent...
and well worth the per person cover charge. Our only mistake was not booking a longer cruise! Can’t wait to go back and do it again!

Italian Riviera. There are 3 restaurants on site, one showcasing Mediterranean specialties, a Seafood option,
so that you can dine Beachside and a Pool –Bar which after a swim you can enjoy a wonderful lunch. The Eden
Roc Beach Club is just a short distance, since you have exclusive use of a Golf Cart in every Villa. Daily Full

by the Marina. This property managed to exceed my expectations, and it is truly amazing! Luxury at its Best.
Dreams Punta Cana Resort & Spa, goes far beyond the all-inclusive experience with Unlimited-Luxury®, where nearly everything is included. You can enjoy spacious rooms and suites,
reservation-free dining, you can just choose the restaurant that you want to enjoy, and they make the experience
hassle free. They also have the Explorer's Club for Kids and the Core Zone Teens Club. The best part is that it
