the annual Sport Swansea Awards. Tonight is a culmination
Welcome to the annual Sport Swansea Awards. Tonight is a culmination of everyone in this room’s hard
work over the past year, with without whom, we would have nothing to celebrate. Whether it’s a Wednesday afternoon, Wednesday evening or an early morning start, no one can fault the commitment that our
students show to their sport. I am lucky to have been able to work with each and every one of you, and I
cannot extend enough thanks for how many smiles you have put on my face over the past year, whether
this be from an amazing win or a particularly impressive fancy dress effort.
With this being Sport Swansea’s second year, the structures, procedures and processes are very much
firmed but this is only due to the behind the scenes work of numerous people. As clubs, we all owe huge
thanks to various members of staff within the Students’ Union, who on a daily basis sort out the finances
and events that are critical for us being as successful as we are. The University and Sport Swansea Committee have once again been excellent, and of course sport in Swansea would be nothing without Gwyneth. Sadie and the work that she does is invaluable and I have been lucky enough to call her my colleague
this year. There is no denying that we would be completely lost without her and I cannot thank her
enough!
We should all be proud of sport in Swansea and you are the ones who have made it what it is. I hope you
all enjoy this evening’s celebrations and congratulations to all those who will be receiving awards!
Many Thanks
Charlotte Peters
It’s been a fantastic year of sport as our second operating as Sport Swansea, and one that we can be proud
of.
With sport sitting over the University and the Union, even though we are now in our 2 nd year it has still
been tough for sports clubs to become accustomed to the changes. Both University and Union staff should
be thanked for their considerable work over the past year and I have enjoyed working with each one of
you.
It’s has been a fantastic year for Sport off the field with the University striding forward in terms of its relationships with our local professional sides, we now have use
of Fairwood, which is a top class facility, and one which our clubs and other Universities very much enjoy visiting. Sport is striving forward and Swansea University is on
the map. We are hosting our biggest ever event here in July – the ICP European Athletics, and holding the annual BUCS Conference in which representatives from every
British University will be here, seeing what Swansea has to offer
Although teams come and go and some years are more successful than others, what
never changes is the friendship and teamwork between our sporting students. The
friends and memories you have gained over time with your team will, when you look back in years to
come, be some of the fondest you have from your time at University. So many ex-students say that the
best thing they did in University was to join their chosen sports club.
Even with such a fantastic social side to our teams, we are still remarkably competitive given our size and
resource. To be achieving the results we do is a credit to you and to your committees and captains. The
University and the Union are indebted to you for picking up the torch and carrying it for us, leaving sport at
a better place at the end of the year than it was at the beginning of the year.
Sport is held in high regard by the University, which is obviously apparent by the senior staff present here
tonight. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our VIPs for their support of Sport Swansea.
We would certainly not be in the position we are now without the individual support of each and every one
present. My final thank-you is to Charlotte who has brought sport to where we are now and has been a
fantastic asset to all of the clubs this year.
I wish you all a fun-filled night and hope that, whether you move on or come back to us next year; Swansea
will forever be in your heart!

Features of this success include stronger community links with clubs playing in the Welsh premiership as well as other leagues.

Team of the Year
Presented by Mrs Gwyneth Diment
Team of the year is presented to the team who has performed beyond expectation and excelled themselves over the

NOMINATIONS
Golf
With the disappointment of an unfortunate relegation last year, the team had to come together and recruit brand
new players with the aim of being promoted this year.
The team have done just that, unbeaten in the league and unbeaten in the cup leading to completing the double.
Not only that the team won their 6 straight successive varsities to complete the triple.
Ladies Volleyball
The ladies have performed beyond expectations during their second competitive year in BUCS. After last year’s promotion they have finished a very creditable 3rd position in Western 1A, missing out on 1st place by only one win.
However, the girls were given a 2nd chance at promotion by playing a round robin with Surrey and Sussex for the final place in the premiership. The girls put in a convincing win against Surrey however lost in a nail biting 5 set match
against a strong Sussex which gave Sussex the promotion. The girls should be proud of their achievements this year.
American Football
The team have had their most successful season in the club’s short history. The boys finished 2nd in the league only
losing to the League Champions by 2 points. The team then went on a winning spree in the National trophy knockouts beating Newcastle, Lancaster, and Exeter on the way to the final. The boys rounded off a superb season by travelling up to Leeds and beating Royal Holloway in the final 38-12. For a team without a regular pitch, this isn’t a bad
achievement!
Club of the Year
Presented by Miss Charlotte Peter & Mr Steve Pearce £250 prize sponsored by Idols
Club of the year is presented to the club who has performed to an exceptional level right across the club.
NOMINATIONS
Fencing
This year, the fencing club has had its most successful year since its creation. The club has had its hand in charity work, holding
two charity blood drives with NHS wales when they visited the university and planning a charity calendar later in the year.
Its women’s team is the strongest it’s ever been and has achieved its highest ever place in the BUCS league coming 3 rd. The
men’s team has been grown from a group of fresher’s stepping into the club and into fencing for the first time this September
and achieving an admiral result of 5th in their league.
The club has also had success financially, being granted £1500 from sport wales to spend on club improvement and training. This
money was used to send 4 first and second year members to get a level 1 coaches qualification in their weapon.
The committee has worked especially hard to bring the club up to date and push that little bit extra into the regular life of all its
members. We hope to be considered for most improved club of the year!
Ultimate Frisbee
This year Swansea University Ultimate has developed itself in every respect and surpassed all achievements from their previous
years.

Largest fresher intake and retention

Placed well at BUCS qualifiers and competed nationally for the first time in club history.

More focus and emphasis on development of the women’s team leading to a spot in the outdoor nationals spot in April.

Broke into the top six teams of the Western region

Hosting their largest ever tournament in the summer
The committee’s hard work has left the club in the strongest position it has ever been in; regionally, nationally, financially and in
terms of the players taking it forward next year. The team’s reputation in the ultimate community, and concomitantly the reputation of the university, has improved exponentially; and as such I believe Swansea University Ultimate deserve Most Improved
Club this year.
Netball
This year netball has focused on all aspects of club development. The club have created a 4 th team who compete competitively
in the local Swansea league. . The committee has worked tirelessly to set up extra training and fitness sessions to accommodate
all 4 teams and social players and to subsidise the session ensuring that each member gets value for their membership fee!
Swansea university netball club has this year reached large membership numbers at 95 with 71 girls currently turn up to train.
Through the additions of a Media Chair and Secretary and a Raising and Giving (RAG) Representative the club has become better
organised and has greatly helped raise the profile of the club. The new positions in the committee have also allowed for the
opportunity for club members to become more involved in charity work. The clubs first event involved working alongside the
Swansea University Coppafeel Society in order to raise awareness for breast cancer. The club also participated in This Morning’s
“bin your bra campaign” where 50 bras were donated to Africa.
Following this, the club collected 700 cans of donated food for the Trussel Trust Food Bank Project, and hosting a mixed netball
tournament in aid of Macmillan Cancer raising a great total of £220. The fundraising continued with the girls climbing the highest peak in South Wales, Pen-Y-Fan, in aid of Sports Relief. So far the club have raised a fantastic £410.03.
With the initiative of hiring a new coach and introducing new training sessions the third and second teams finished high in their
leagues at 4th and 2nd place respectively, whilst the first team have finished second in their league and made it to the semi-finals
of the cup.

the time as well as being a pretty decent American Football player.
John Roberts

liked by all with his charming wit and heart-warming smile. Captain’s bar is where you'll see him at his finest.
Robyn Lock
Robyn is an exceptional rugby player and provides a welcoming face for all the newcomers trying out the sport.
Robyn won Strictly Come Dancing 2014 with the best salsa ever seen! Robyn is truly a character that won't be forgotten and her legacy will continue, even if it is for having the most memorable eyebrows.
Johannes Schwable
He never gives up, the man just does not give up. Jo Ha provides comedy relief and general morale for the cycling
club on all rides. 20% of the time he studies engineering, 80% of the time he studies business, Jo Ha spends 100% of
the time being a total badass! A ride with the infamous Jo Ha will never have a dull moment. A hero.
Sport Recognition
Sport Recognition Awards are presented to a student, member of staff or associate member who has aided a club, Sport
Swansea, the Students Union, Swansea University or the wider community in Swansea through volunteering within the realms
of sport for an extended period of time.
Presented by Mrs Gwyneth Diment
Avoen Perryman
There are a few characters we meet throughout our lifetimes who have the ability to inspire us to attempt the inconceivable and
achieve what we believe is impossible. Every individual should aim to meet characters like this. Many people may not be so
lucky, but for Swansea University Boxing Club we were privileged enough to have such a character coaching us for 7 years.
Avoen began studying at Swansea University 7 years ago with a background in Amateur boxing. Avoen decided that the best
course of action would be to set up a boxing club in Swansea University, starting off with a handful of people training on the
tarmac playing area of the Student Village. 7 years later the club boasts many members, with talented fighters proud to bare the
Swansea crest while in the ring.
Avoen's hard work, determination and commitment to the success of the club were a constant source of inspiration for many of
the club’s members. Avoen's ability to Coach, organise the club affairs and maintain the wellbeing of all boxers under his care
(while studying for a BSc and PHD, as well as working part time as a Welfare officer!) have shown many that with the right attitude, it's possible to do things that were thought 'too difficult'.
Avoen has recently left to pursue a 'dream job' helping boxing clubs in South East England.
Richard Lancaster
Richard has been involved with sport since his time as Athletic Union president here in Swansea and then has gone onto manage
the AU whilst being heavily involved in the rugby club. Richards continued commitment to the club is demonstrated by early
morning sessions, team selection, match days, and analysis following every match. In Richards’s time in charge, the team have
remained solidly in the Premier South Division.
The current success of the annual varsity can be attributed to Richard’s dedication and enthusiasm. 15 years ago the event was
in its infancy and was just a rugby match, over the years the event has developed into a whole day of competition where nearly
30 sports compete and 16,000 students attend.
Sport Swansea would like to thank Richard on behalf of many students over the years who benefited from his involvement in
sport. Student sort in Swansea University would not be what it is today without Richard for all he has done over the years.
Clubman of the Year
Presented by Miss Charlotte Peters
This is a new award introduced this year. There are many individuals who go above and beyond their committee
roles and are not recognised for their commitment and dedication.
NOMINATIONS
Szymon Kubal
For the past two years Szymon has been volunteering as the volleyball coach for all three teams. He organises and
leads 8 hours of training sessions each week, as well as additional fitness sessions. This year Szymon gave up his
place in the men’s team in order to focus on his role as coach, accompanying both the men and women’s teams on
all of their away trips. Szymon does all the jobs an experienced and dedicated coach would do; analysing matches,
providing feedback and organising physio. Szymon has built the volleyball club up from non-existence and should be
recognised for his efforts.
Claire Gujer
Claire coaches the swimming team a minimum of 2 evenings a week for the second year in a row, sacrificing her own
training time to coach. Claire has also volunteers for galas for timekeeping and administration all year and attends
away galas coaching the squad. Alongside her swimming duties, Claire has also worked hard as one of our finance
executives on the Sport Swansea committee.
Sam Rose-Miles
Sam’s contribution to the club both on and off the field during his time at University can’t be ignored. On the field a
1st team regular throughout his 3 years, he’s been an integral player and one of the first names on the team sheet.
His attendance for SUMFC’s Saturday side (Team Swansea) has also been exemplary where again his playing prowess
has been faultless. Off the field Sam’s involvement with SUMFC is unrivalled. As well as being an ever present at Club
Socials, Sam has volunteered his services to numerous events and is always the first to make himself available. A
qualified coach himself, he’s helped to run Football Festivals aimed at Primary School children with SUMFC and the
Swansea Schools Football Association.
