Wynonna, born Christina Claire Ciminella, became a
solo artist when her mother, Naomi, had to quit the group
in 1991 due to chronic hepatitis. Moving from Curb/RCA
to Curb/MCA – and produced by legendary producer Tony
Brown – Wynonna’s first release as a solo act, “She Is His
Only Need,” reached number one on the Country chart.
“No One Else On Earth” was her third single as a solo
artist. That song also reached number one on the Country
chart, remaining there for four weeks; additionally, she
reached the Hot 100 and was Top 40 on Billboard’s Hot
Sales chart.
Wynonna has had 30 chart singles, including four number ones and a total of 11 that were Top 10. Her 2004
Curb album What The World Needs debuted at number one
on the Billboard Album chart.
Later, she had a Top Five single on the Billboard chart
with her recording of Foreigner’s “I Want To Know What
Love Is,” which featured legendary rock guitarist Jeff Beck.
In 2014, on Wynonna’s 30th anniversary with Curb
Records, she released her 30th album, produced by her
husband Cactus Moser, a former member of Highway 101.

Lyle Lovett writes and performs music that is rooted in country
but whose branches extend to an eclectic mix of folk, jazz and pop
music. Lovett recorded a demo in Phoenix after graduating from
Texas A&M (where he studied German and journalism), and songwriter Guy Clark played it for music executives in Nashville. Dick
Whitehouse, president of Curb Records, heard it and signed Lovett
to the label.
Lovett is a premier songwriter and performer who at one time was
married to actress Julia Roberts. Lovett has won four Grammys; he
has had 14 singles on Billboard’s Country chart.
In 2012 Lyle Lovett released his 14th album for Curb Records
titled Release Me and in 2013 released his Greatest Hits album which

on Curb/Capitol, was Sawyer Brown’s
second single and first number one on the
Country chart; after this, they released 50
chart singles on Curb, including 17 that

“Some Girls Do” is a defining song for

Tim McGraw’s father, legendary baseball pitcher Tug McGraw,
sent Curb Records promotion man Mike Borchetta a tape of his
son. Borchetta, a baseball fan, brought the tape to the attention of
label president Dick Whitehouse and Mike Curb.
McGraw had been performing “Indian Outlaw,” but it was not
recorded on his debut album for the label. During Fan Fair in 1993,
Mike Curb and Phil Gernhard saw McGraw perform the song and
encouraged him to record it for the label.
“Indian Outlaw” was the fifth single McGraw released for Curb
– the other four didn’t get into the Top 40 – but this song went to
number eight when it was released in 1994 and established McGraw
as a major act. His follow-ups included 24 number-one singles and
12 number one albums. “Something Like That” in 2010 became the
most-played song of the first decade of the 21st century.
By 2011, McGraw had 65 chart singles, including five with his
wife, Faith Hill, whom he married in 1996. One of those duets, “It’s
Your Love,” was number-one for six weeks and won the Country
Music Association’s award for Vocal Event of the Year.
McGraw has expanded his career to include acting; he has
starred in Friday Night Lights, Blind Side, Black Cloud and Flicka.

The Four Seasons were formed
in Newark, New Jersey, in 1956.
They were known as The Four
Lovers until Bob Gaudio, formerly
of the Royal Teens (“Short
Shorts”) joined them in 1960.
Gaudio became the group’s major
songwriter, penning hits such as
“Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry”
and “Walk Like A Man.”
At the end of 1975, they
released “December 1963 (Oh,
What A Night),” and the single
became a number one record for
three weeks in 1976, remaining on
the charts for 27 weeks. This
recording was one of the first singles released on Warner/Curb, the
venture Mike Curb had formed
with Warner Brothers Records.
In 1994, a re-mixed version of
the song was released again by
DISCOGRAPHY
Curb Records and included in the
film Forrest Gump. This led to the
single re-entering the Billboard
charts in August of that year. The
single reached number six on the
Main Top 40, number eight on the
Hot Airplay, number 30 on the
Hot Sales and number 14 on the
Hot 100 – remaining there for 27
weeks. These two 27-week stints
on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart
meant the single was on that chart
for 54 weeks total; thus, it became
the first record in the history of
the Hot 100 chart in Billboard to
remain on the chart more than
one year.
In 2008, The Four Seasons’
Broadway show, Jersey Boys, won
multiple Tony Awards and in 2014
Jersey Boys became a hit film produced by Clint Eastwood.

The Osmonds were originally a barbershop-type quartet who became a pop/rock group that hit the Rhythm &
Blues chart with “One Bad Apple.” On “Down By The
Lazy River” – their fourth chart record on MGM while
Mike Curb was president – the group became a rock n’
roll band, playing their own instruments in this recording.
“Down By The Lazy River” reached number four on
the Billboard Hot 100 and was one of 23 chart records by
The Osmonds with Mike Curb. “Crazy Horses” was their
eighth single and charted again 25 years later when the
acclaimed Utah Saints remixed the record and proclaimed
the Osmonds “the greatest rock n’ roll band in the world!”

Mrs. Whigfield was the name of the piano teacher of
Sannie Charlotte Carlson, so the singer took Whigfield as

Whigfield was born in Denmark but grew up in Africa.

dance hit and sold more than three million copies worldwide. In the United States, the song went Top 20 on the

Curb Records has a strong international presence, and
dance music has been an important part of the label. Curb
signed the Hamburg, Germany-based dance group Fun
Factory in the mid-‘90s.
The original group broke up in 1997, but a new Fun

Duane Eddy had a number of instrumental hits beginning with “Rebel-Rouser,” which reached the Top Ten in
1958. He signed to Jamie Records after dropping out of
high school at 16 to work with a dance band. Dick Clark
featured Eddy on his American Bandstand TV show and
on the Dick Clark Caravan of Stars.
Eddy was produced by Lee Hazelwood, a Phoenix disc
jockey who became his mentor. In Eddy’s band were
Larry Knechtel on piano, Al Casey and Steve Douglas.
Performing on his custom-made Chet Atkins model
Gretsch guitar, Eddy performed instrumental versions of a
number of pop and country hits.
“Ghost Riders In The Sky” was written by Stan Jones,
and was a number-one pop hit for Vaughn Monroe in
1949. Eddy’s rock version was produced by Bob Gaudio
and released on Curb Records.

Whiteheart was formed originally in 1982 by Gary
Lunn (bass), Steve Green (vocals), David Huff (drums),
Mark Gersmehl (keyboards), Dann Huff (guitar) and Billy
Smiley (keyboards, guitar and vocals). The name of the
group came from Steve Green after he saw a video by Joan

reflect an opposite point of view; hence, “Whiteheart.”
This pioneer Christian rock group’s core members
Billy Smiley and Mark Gersmehl are the major songwriters. In 1995, Whiteheart released Inside, its debut album

reached number two on the CCM Christian Chart. The

most successful British girl group in pop history until The
Spice Girls in the 1990s.
In 1986 they released a cover of “Venus,” a hit for
MGM by The Shocking Blue when Mike Curb headed
that label. “Every Shade Of Blue” reached the Billboard
Dance Sales chart in 1996 on Curb Records.
[ 148 ]
When Garth Brooks was hot, a number of Nashville songwriters wrote songs
they hoped he would record. Mike Curb
wanted to find a singer who could do
Garth Brooks-type songs and signed Jeff
Herndon, who did many of the demos
intended for Garth.
The label changed Herndon’s name to
Jeff Carson and released “Not On Your
[ 149 ]
Love,” which went to number one on the
Billboard Country chart and was also on
the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Carson also recorded the Curb-published song “The Car,” which won the
Academy of Country Music Video of the
Year award. Both records were produced
by Chuck Howard.

Trini Triggs is an African-American
country singer from Natchitoches,
Louisiana. His debut record on Curb was
released in 1998, and he had three chart
singles: “Straight Tequila,” “Horse To
Mexico,” and “The Wreckin’ Crew.” Triggs
also recorded the Chuck Berry classic
“You Never Can Tell” which Mike Curb
personally produced.
“Trini Triggs was a major talent and
definitely ahead of his time,” said Mike
Curb. “We were proud to have him on our
label and proud of his accomplishments
on the Billboard chart.”
Boy Howdy – comprised of Jeffrey
Steele, Cary Park, Larry Park and Hugh
Wright – was a Southern California band
formed in 1990. They released a single,
“”When Johnny Comes Marchin’ Home
Again” that led to their contract with
Curb Records in 1992. Their debut album
was Welcome To Howdywood.
Steele wrote most of the group’s
material. “She’d Give Anything” was the
title cut of their second album and their
234
third single. It reached number four on
the Country chart. Curb played the song
for Warner Music Chairman Doug
Morris, who recorded a Top Five Rhythm
& Blues version of the song with Gerald
Levert.
After Boy Howdy disbanded in 1996,
Jeffrey Steele became an award-winning
songwriter, creating hits for numerous
other artists.

As a child, Michael English sang with
his family group, The Singing Samaritans;
after high school he joined The Singing
Americans and, in 1985, joined The Bill
Gaither Vocal Band.
Gaither encouraged English to embark
on a solo career and, in 1994, English
swept the Gospel Music Association’s
Dove Awards; however, a personal issue
was revealed and his gospel label dropped
him. Nevertheless, Curb signed English as
a pop gospel singer. His debut album
Freedom was released in 1996 and featured
the single “Your Love Amazes Me,” which
reached number 10 on the Adult
Contemporary chart.
“Gospel Ship” was recorded by The
Carter Family in 1935; the song dates
back to the 19th century. Michael
English’s recording demonstrates his
ability to sing black gospel music.
Mike Curb with
Faith Hill and
Tim McGraw
Tim McGraw had been releasing hits for
five years before he recorded “It’s Your Love”
with his new wife, Faith Hill. Initially, McGraw
was reluctant to release the song as a single
because he had always led off with an up-tempo
number to introduce a new album.
Mike Curb finally persuaded McGraw to
release “It’s Your Love” as a single, and it went
to the top of the Country chart and remained
there for six weeks; it remained on the Country
Sales chart for 12 weeks in the number-one
{
position, and on the charts for 61 weeks in
total. The single also crossed over and reached
number seven on the Hot 100 and number
three on the Hot Sales charts in Billboard.
“This record bridged the gap of that twoyear period when Faith was in between records,
and it introduced her to Byron Gallimore, who
became her producer and recorded ‘This Kiss’
and ‘Breathe’ with her,” said Curb.
The record became the CMA Vocal Event
of the Year.

DISCOGRAPHY
Mike Curb first heard LeAnn Rimes on a tape he played
while traveling with his family to the Smoky Mountains for
a weekend vacation. The song was “Blue,” and it hit the
Country chart in May 1996, went to number 10 and won a
Grammy when LeAnn was 13.
Her first number one single was “One Way Ticket” and
by the end of 2013 she had charted over 40 singles on Curb
Records, 11 of them were Top 10. In 2013 she released her
14th album on Curb Records titled Spitfire, including
“Gasoline and Matches” featuring Rob Thomas and Jeff
Beck and in 2014 released her 15th album featuring the
music from the television show Eddie and LeAnn.
LeAnn’s biggest hit was “How Do I Live,” which was
scheduled to be the title song for the movie Con Air,
produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Rimes had recorded the
song for the movie, but the film’s producers elected to go
with a version sung by Trisha Yearwood, who released it as a
single in the country market.
LeAnn’s version of the song was floundering until a
chance encounter at LaGuardia Airport in New York.
Mike and his daughter, Courtney, met LeAnn and her
mother, and Courtney Curb suggested the song be
released to the pop market. It rose to the number-one
position on the Adult Contemporary chart, remaining in
that position for 11 weeks and stayed on that chart for an
incredible 65 weeks.
The record catapulted LeAnn Rimes from country star to
international superstar; her version of this song reached
number one on the Dance Sales, number two (for four
weeks) on the Hot 100, number three on the Hot Airplay,
number two on Hot Sales, number four on Main Top 40,
number one on Dance Sales, and number one on Country
Sales (remaining in that position for 32 weeks and on that
chart for 309 weeks!), an all-time record for chart longevity.
“This also became the longest-running record on the
Billboard Hot 100 charts in the entire 20th century,” said
Mike Curb. “We have a philosophy at our company of
turning negatives into positives, and there’s no better
example than this record, which was initially rejected by
country radio – our intended audience – but became an
incredible pop crossover hit.”
Jerry Bruckheimer produced the movie Coyote Ugly for
Disney. It was directed by David McNally and starred Piper
Perabo, Adam Garcia, John Goodman, Maria Bello, Izabella
Miko and Tyra Banks. Ordinarily, Disney Records would
compile the soundtrack album but the label did not believe
they would be able to clear the permissions for all the songs,
so they passed.
“Please Remember” – a ballad written by Diane Warren
for the film – had not been recorded, so Mike Curb went to
Hollywood at the suggestion of super agent Tom Ross to
watch the movie, because they felt the song might fit LeAnn
Rimes. Curb met with Kathy Nelson, who was in charge of
film music at Disney, about the soundtrack and told her he
would like to work on the album if it could come out on
Curb Records.
“At first they said ‘no’ but then came back and said ‘yes,
if you can clear all the songs.’” said Curb. “That led to
LeAnn Rimes recording four songs for the movie,
including a hit song by Diane Warren, ‘Can’t Fight The
Moonlight.’ We ended up putting LeAnn on four songs. In
fact, LeAnn also sang the vocals for Piper Perabo, the lead
actress in the film.”

Isaac Hayes played a key role in the Memphis music
community, which became the creative center for soul music
in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He was a member of the
Stax house band in the mid-1960s and formed a songwriting
partnership with David Porter. Hayes and Porter wrote “Soul
Man” and “Hold On, I’m Coming” for Sam and Dave.
In 1967, Hayes began recording solo albums for
Enterprise, a subsidiary of Stax. His biggest hit was the
soundtrack to the movie Shaft, and Mike Curb and Al
Bell played significant roles in putting the album together.
Billy Preston was a childhood prodigy. He played organ
for Mahalia Jackson and then worked for Sam Cooke and
Little Richard before joining The Beatles for “Get Back.”
“I’m In The Mood” is a bluesy, soulful recording
that captures the Memphis sound of the late 1960s and
early 1970s.

owned London Records, before he became president of
Polygram and then president of Warner Brothers.
In England, Ames and Phil Cokell played a key role in
breaking “How Do I Live” by LeAnn Rimes. He suggested
a joint venture between Elton John’s Rocket label and Curb
Records to help solidify LeAnn as an international artist
and help Elton domestically. The result was a worldwide hit.
