Awal Muharram (also called Maal Hijrah)
celebrates the beginning of the Islamic New
Year, and is also the beginning of ten days of
remembrance for the martyrdom of Hussein
ibn Ali, Prophet Mohammed’s grandson, who
was killed in the battle of Karbala on the
tenth day of Muharram in the year 680 AD.

Deepavali or the ‘Festival of Lights’ is
celebrated by Hindus with prayers, family
gatherings and festivities. Open houses are
held where family and friends visit each
other and enjoy delicious traditional goodies

• Maulidur Rasul
12 December 2016
Also locally referred to as Maulud Nabi,
Maulidur Rasul observes the day when the
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was born, which
was on the 12th day of the month of Rabi’ul
Awal in the Islamic calendar. The day is
celebrated with early-morning processions
to honour the Prophet while chanting
salutations and praises to him, and sermons
in remembrance of his teachings.

• Borneo International Kite Festival (BIKF) 28 September - 02 October 2016
The festival unites kite-flying enthusiasts
from around the world while promoting
Bintulu as a tourist-destination. This is the
12th time that the kite festival is held in
this seaside town of Bintulu. The huge windy
open space of the old Bintulu Airport that
faces the South China Sea provides ideal
consistent flying conditions that kiters
love. This also explains why four records of
magnitude number of kites have been set
since its inception in 2005.
This year’s festival sees 2,500 diamond
kites being launched, forming the longest
kite tunnel arch of 500 meters with 400
kiters from 25 countries participating at this
festival. This family-fun event comes with
cultural performances in the evening. Make a
day trip to Similajau National Park as a sidetrip.

Held right after the Singapore F1 Grand Prix,
the Malaysian leg of the race offers a unique
double F1 treat in Southeast Asia. With an

countries to travel more than 1000 km in
search of more than 400 species of birds in a
wide range of habitats.

First played in 2010, the CIMB Classic in
the only official PGA TOUR FedExCup event
in Southeast Asia. It features a limited
78-player field, with a prize purse of USD 7
Million and no cut, making it one the richest
professional golf tournaments in the region.

30 Septembert - 03 October 2016
KL Tower is a magnet for extreme sports
enthusiasts particularly ‘BASE’ (building,
antennas, span, earth) jumpers. Every year
more than 100 daredevils jump from the
tower and make three second free falls before
opening their chutes, leaving spectators
breathless!

the RORC and consists of three overnight
passage races, 260 miles in total, plus 3 days
of harbour racing in Penang and Langkawi.

weather and changing tactics during the 9
