The remainder of the book contains 2 Christmas poems: “The Night After Christmas” which is a parody of Moore’s poem, illustrated with 2 full page engravings and “Christmas and Children” illustrated with 1 large engraving. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH OF THIS FAMOUS CHILDREN’S BOOK that is still in print today. Taken from the 6th German edition. Printed on rectos only, each leaf is hand-colored showing the fate of these now famous naughty children. Originally published in Germany in 1845 as Lustige Geschichten und drollige Bilder, with only 15 pages, the book was expanded and renamed Struwwelpeter in 1847. As an early example of planned obsolescence, Hoffmann reportedly instructed his publishers to issue the book in strong boards but with a frail paper spine in the hope that children would quickly read the book to pieces; their parents would be forced to buy another copy. This accounts for the unbelievable rarity of both the first German and first English editions. PML 131. Amongst the rarest of all children’s books. $25,000.00
