1858 “Night Before: FIRST USE OF THE TITLE THAT WE USE TODAY
138.CHRISTMAS. (MOORE,CLEMENT) NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS; Or
Kriss Kringle’s visit by Clement C. Moore WITH OTHER CHRISTMAS POEMS.
Phil.: Willis P. Hazard [1858]. Large 8vo (7” wide x 10 1/2” high), pictorial wraps,
[16]p. incl. covers, lacks outer wrap, last leaf has 2 triangular pieces off inner
edges (no loss of text), spine worn, corners rounded, some soil and chipping, GVG. This edition is important because it marks the first use of the “Night Before
Christmas” as the title which we’ve all come to use, as opposed to “A Visit From
St. Nicholas.” It is illustrated by Nick with 3 full page wood engravings plus a
large engraving on the cover that isn’t repeated in the text. The illustration of
Santa going down the chimney is a copy by R. Roberts of Charles Ingham’s drawing
that was first printed in 1841 for the January issue of the New York Mirror. The
remainder of the book contains 2 Christmas poems: “The Night After Christmas”
which is a parody of Moore’s poem, illustrated with 2 full page engravings and
“Christmas and Children” illustrated with 1 large engraving. Rare.

RARE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS - SCATTERGOOD ILLUSTRATIONS
144.CHRISTMAS. (MOORE,CLEMENT) A VISIT FROM SANTA CLAUS by
Clement C. Moore. 4to (6 7/8 x 8 7/8”), pictorial wraps, 8 p. not including cover,
lacks decorative front outer wrap else VG, laid into a contemporary paper folder
Helen & Marc Younger
titled Christmas Roses. The front outer wrap had the publisher’s imprint, either
Boston or Philadelphia, circa 1866. The rear outer wrap is printed in red and
green with a vignette of the Holy Family surrounded by a holly wreath, matching
Marshall 50 who dates it at circa 1860. She notes that this version was used
as a promotional booklet by merchants along the east coast. Despite lacking the
front wrapper, this copy stands alone because the front wrapper was present
only to be able to have the imprint changed depending upon which location it was
distributed from. The front cover is printed with decorative type with the title in
two parts (A Visit From / picture / Santa Claus) surrounding a large engraving of
Santa with his bag of toys on the roof, signed Scattergood. The verso of the title
is blank and the first page of text has another engraving of two children carrying
their Christmas tree home. There are 2 large, nearly full page wonderful tinted
engravings full of detail and one other smaller engraving of Santa on his sleigh
waving goodbye. Rare. (SEE ILLUS BOTTOM PRIOR COLUMN)

LOVELY DU BOIS WATERCOLOR
209.DU BOIS,WILLIAM PENE. NIGHT BOOK by Mark Strand. Offered here
is a very beautiful watercolor by Du Bois for the book by Strand published in
1985 by Crown. The image measures 7” wide x 4 3/4” high. A beautiful night
scene has the moon and stars shining over a boat with one man seated at the end.
It appears on the page with text beginning: “A man on a yacht was drinking a
nightcap, which is a bedtime drink for grown-ups.” The colors in the original art
are much less garish than in the printed book. To help a little girl who is afraid
of the dark, the moon sends down a special moonbeam to show her the many
wondrous things to see at night. This is a lovely image.

FIRST EDITION OF STRUWWELPETER IN ENGLISH!
293.HOFFMANN,HEINRICH. ENGLISH STRUWWELPETER or Pretty Stories
and Funny Pictures for Little Children. Leipsic: Friedrich Volckmar, 1848. 4to,
original decorative boards with vignette on rear cover, 24p., recased with new
spine, old endpapers, tear on title page repaired, some soiling throughout,
paper covers worn off on corners and edges, overall a Very Good copy. FIRST
EDITION IN ENGLISH OF THIS FAMOUS CHILDREN’S BOOK that is still in
print today. Taken from the 6th German edition. Printed on rectos only, each
leaf is hand-colored showing the fate of these now famous naughty children.
Originally published in Germany in 1845 as Lustige Geschichten und drollige
Bilder, with only 15 pages, the book was expanded and renamed Struwwelpeter
in 1847. As an early example of planned obsolescence, Hoffmann reportedly
instructed his publishers to issue the book in strong boards but with a frail
paper spine in the hope that children would quickly read the book to pieces; their
parents would be forced to buy another copy. This accounts for the unbelievable
rarity of both the first German and first English editions. PML 131. Amongst the
rarest of all children’s books.
