From the beginning, the Witte Museum was what founding director Ellen
Shulz called “the people’s museum”. As a young botanist and high school
teacher, Miss Shulz had heard about the “Attwater Collection” of Texas
pecans, exotic “stuffed” birds, prehistoric stone tools and other “wonders”
that had been displayed in World’s Fairs. She traveled to Houston to examine
it and was so entranced, she made plans to raise the funds to purchase
the collection and start a museum in San Antonio. Mr. Attwater wanted the
collection to go to San Antonio, where he had friends, and offered to sell it for
$5,000.
The next fall, Miss Shulz found a place in the school system to house the
new “museum” and started the campaign to raise the down payment of
$500. She and her Main High School students stood on street corners throughout the winter with cigar boxes
and asked for donations…a dime, a quarter. At the end of February in 1923, the amount was tallied and it was
$826.36, more than enough to make the purchase. Mr. Attwater agreed to take the rest in installments. Thus
began the Witte Museum, with a collection purchased by the people of San Antonio.
I mention this story because a similar event happened this summer, during the Witte Museum’s 85th Anniversary
Campaign. Armed with a generous offer by an esteemed Witte Museum supporter to match every dollar raised
up to $85,000 for operations support for the museum, Witte Museum Visitor Associates wore aprons at the front
of the museum each busy summer day and asked for donations to help achieve the match. One by one, young
children walked up to the apron and put in donations…dimes, quarters and crumpled dollar bills to sustain the
museum they truly love as their own. So far, those coins and dollars exceed $5,000! We shared this story with
one another at a recent Witte staff meeting and the room became hushed before bursting into applause. We feel
privileged to serve such a beloved museum.
The rest of the historic story is that Miss Shulz continued to gather increasingly prominent friends to advocate for
a museum building, which was first planned for San Pedro Park and then, when Mr. Alfred Witte left a bequest of
$65,000 for a building and $10,000 for collections, Mayor John W. Tobin chose the current site for the museum
and provided a match from the City of San Antonio of $75,000. The idea was that the Witte Museum would
grace the bend of the San Antonio River near the headwaters and create a third entrance to Brackenridge Park.

Mayor Tobin asked Miss Shulz to stay unmarried until the museum was opened, which she did, but soon after
the Witte Museum opened on October 8, 1926, she became Ellen Shulz Quillin and was the Director of the Witte
Museum for 30 years, building it into a grand museum for the people of the region.
We will continue the Witte Museum’s Anniversary Campaign until the official birthday on October 8, so if you’d
like to donate those dollars, please do send them along!
In the spirit of tenacious and entrepreneurial Mrs. Quillin, the Witte Museum is undergoing major growth with
the South Texas Heritage Center opening next May, the Witte Research Center opening soon after and in the
meantime, the H-E-B Body Adventure continuing its ever transforming galleries and gardens.
The South Texas Heritage Center will house many of the artifacts that came in 1927, 1928 and 1929—the
years just after the opening of the museum. The families of South Texas knew very well they had lived through a
legendary century and they wanted to be sure that their ancestors were fully informed through the artifacts they
donated…the King Ranch mud wagon, the West brand that marked thousands of cattle moving up the trail, the
Spanish Colonial spurs, the rebozos, early Texas furniture and paintings by 19th century European and American
artists inspired by the South Texas frontier.
We feel confident that ultimately the growth of the Witte Museum into a more contemporary destination will
reap the revenue and support to sustain the museum many decades. But in the meantime, help us grow. Your
support already as members is inspiring, and your donation to the Anniversary campaign will be noted as
ensuring a time of transformation for the people’s museum.

SHIPWRECK! is making its TEXAS DEBUT at your very
own Witte Museum! Dive into the fascinating world of
shipwrecks, pirate lore and sunken treasure. SHIPWRECK!
features in-depth stories behind some of the world’s most
famous shipwrecks, spanning centuries of maritime history,
that were discovered by Odyssey Marine Exploration.
up the last unexplored frontier on Earth—the deep ocean.
Explore the cutting-edge technology Odyssey uses to
conduct its groundbreaking discoveries by experiencing
life-sized replicas of some of these cool tools. Visitors can
even operate the ROV ZEUS’ robotic arm in an interactive
challenge to recover coins.
SHIPWRECK! provides a close-up encounter with the
wreck of the SS Republic, a side-wheel steamship lost
in a fierce hurricane off the coast of Georgia in 1865.
Discovered 1,700 feet below the surface of the Atlantic,
the shipwreck site presents a stunning time capsule of life
in North America immediately after the close of the Civil
War. The archaeological excavation, the first of its kind ever
conducted at such depths, produced more than 51,000
gold and silver coins and nearly 14,000 artifacts—a wealth
of mid-19th century trade goods hidden on the ocean floor
for more than a century.
The subject of shipwrecks would not be complete without
pirates! Through interactive pirate-themed experiences,
uncover Pirate lore, legend and facts. Encounter some
of the notorious pirates that sailed the seas including
Blackbeard, Captain Kidd, Barbary Corsairs, Privateers and
Buccaneers.
Sailing the high seas armed with advanced technology and

Betty Coates Textile Gallery
This exhibition highlights one of the Witte’s largest collections,
textiles. Discover the beauty and artistry of the Witte’s fashion
collection through a selection of clothing and accessories spanning
more than 150 years of fashion.
The Witte Museum started collecting historic clothing immediately
after the museum opened to the public in 1926. In 1976 the Witte
invited the Curator of Textiles at the Art Institute of Chicago to assess
the collection, and the determination was that it could become a
core collection to serve a variety of organizations and groups from
university costume history classes to Needlework Guilds. Since
then, the Witte began working to carry out these goals and create
a fashion-based collection, collecting clothing chronologically from
each decade. Today, the Witte Museum continues to collect textiles
that tell the story of what it means for people of all walks of life to live
in South Texas.

HOLIDAY TRADITIONS
South Texas
Family Tradition:
Los Pastores
Sunday, December 4, 1-4 p.m.
Join us for the story of the shepherds’ journey to see
the Baby Jesus, a traditional play from Spain adapted in
Mexico and the American Southwest. Usually the story
of Christmas centers on Mary and Joseph, and no room
at the inn, but Los Pastores focuses on the shepherds’
story, which is equally enthralling.
See this story reenacted as the shepherds face cold,
hunger and temptations from devils. The Witte Museum
sponsored these performances in 1924 and throughout
the 1930s, and welcomed back the tradition in 1994
after an absence of almost 60 years. The performance
is one hour long and related hands-on activities will be
available for the entire family. Los Pastores is included
with museum admission.
La Tamalada
Saturday, December 10, 9 a.m.-Noon
Making and eating tamales is a long-time San Antonio
tradition loved by all! Join us for a La Tamalada—a
workshop for adults to explore the making of tamales
from scratch. Participants will create and flavor their own
healthy half dozen to take home to share.
While they cook, enjoy a conversation between Comadre
Gloria Solis and Dr. Dustin Knepp, Ph.D., Department of
Latin American, Caribbean and U.S. Latino Studies at the
University of Albany, State University of New York, as they
discuss the tradition and significance of tamale-making.
Cost is $25 for museum members and $35 for nonmembers. There is a maximum of 20 adult participants so
reserve your spot today! Call 210.357.1910 to register.

MUSEUM NEWS
Witte Museum, c. 1926
With a Hand Dealt, Came the Witte Museum
Imagine San Antonio without the vibrant cultural institutions
that it has today. In the early 1920s, no such museum
existed in San Antonio. In fact, the Witte Museum sprung
from the determination of a tenacious school teacher Ellen
Schultz Quillin and a community-wide effort to raise the
funds needed for San Antonio’s first public museum.
During Mrs. Quillin’s many visits to the mayor’s office to ask
for funding and land for a museum, a city clerk had heard
the museum pitch and mentioned it to the men he played
cards with regularly. Little did he realize that one of his
friends had not only listened to him describe the plans for
the museum but had decided to leave the city a gift to make
sure that it happened.
That card player was Alfred G. Witte. In 1925, Mr. Witte
left the City of San Antonio $75,000 in his will to build a
museum in Brackenridge Park in memory of his parents,
George and Mary Kleine Witte, which dovetailed perfectly
13
with Mrs. Quillin and the City of San Antonio’s plans for this
museum. The Witte Museum was born! Funding from the
city was used to build the main building while Mr. Witte’s
gift was used to build two wings and to create a fund to
purchase art for the collection.
This 85 year old, yet vibrant museum all began by someone
naming the Witte Museum in his will. But gifts of all sizes
make a big impact at the Witte! Consider leaving a specific
amount or portion of your estate to the Witte Museum in
your will so that future generations can enjoy the Witte’s
renowned collections, blockbuster exhibits and educational
programs that you know and love.
If you have already named the Witte Museum in your will or
other estate plans, please let us know so that we can thank
you and include you as a member of the Witte Museum
Legacy Society. If you have any questions please call
Heather Welder Russo at 210.357.1851.
