Charlotte Family Housing
I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to all our donors and stakeholders whose
generosity has allowed us to empower so many working homeless families in
Charlotte toward economic independence. Words cannot express what your gifts
of time and money have meant to Charlotte Family Housing this past year. As
you know, many poor families work long hard hours at low wages so inflation will
stay low and stock prices high in our complex economy. They live in substandard
housing, sometimes go hungry and almost always forgo health benefits… all so we
as a community can eat or buy goods and services more cheaply or conveniently.
Because they sacrifice so much of their time, ability and even health for our society,
they are “major donors” just like you. However, too many times their contributions
are anonymous and not properly recognized. Thank you for partnering with
Charlotte Family Housing and making their gifts known to all.

Ty’Lisa sits proudly at the kitchen table in

getting ready. She still has the “pinch me feeling” that her and her son finally have a place to call home after three
years. She shares her ideas of painting one wall of her living room red and getting slipcovers for the furniture.
Ty’Lisa is a single mother of two, a 17-year
veteran of the Army who holds an Associate
degree in Business Management. You probably
wouldn’t expect someone like Ty’Lisa and her
family to be homeless. But as Ty’Lisa shares
– life happens. She overcame her battle with
substance abuse and is a survivor of domestic
violence.
When Ty’Lisa came home from Iraq in 2008,
her father was very sick. She was used to seeing
him healthy and strong, and now he was going
blind and had lost a leg. He got depressed,
and subsequently she got depressed. After her
father passed away, Ty’Lisa didn’t want to go
to a shelter with her son. Instead she moved
into a house/apartment with her sponsor. This
was the beginning of her homeless journey as
she and her family were now doubled up. She
held jobs, but the jobs she had didn’t afford
her the ability to pay rent, utilities, and basic
necessities on her own.
On March 21, Ty’Lisa tells us her life changed
when she moved into Charlotte Family
Housing’s Plaza Place shelter. During this time
in the shelter, she worked closely with her
social worker to find stable employment and
to get her son the help he needed so he could
process all they had been through.
Ty’Lisa speaks highly of the Good Neighbor
classes she took while in the shelter. The
classes were very valuable to her in choosing a
place for her family to call home. She found a
nice neighborhood with a good school for her
son which is five minutes from her job.
She reflects back on this year by sharing,
“There were days that I cried. There were days
that I would ask myself if this was worth it, but
it was. Now I’m sitting at my own table, sitting
in my own house and using my own things.”
