Welcome...
...to the latest programme of events at your local museums
and galleries in Kirklees over the spring and summer period.
Highlights include:
Brontë 200
Throughout 2016, Kirklees Museums & Galleries, along with
many other local groups and organisations, will be celebrating
the 200th anniversary of the birth of the famous novelist,
Charlotte Brontë and the many connections with the Brontë
family in the Kirklees area.
The many activities and events being planned include creative
writing, displays, exhibitions, walks, talks and family activity
days with lots taking place at our very own Red House.
Charlotte Brontë often visited Red House to see her close friend
Mary Taylor and the house was immortalised as ‘Briarmains’ in
her novel Shirley. Charlotte also based ‘Fieldhead’ on Oakwell
Hall, which she visited when she was thinking about setting up a
school at the Parsonage in Haworth.

Remembering the Somme at Tolson
Memorial Museum
The commemorations for the Battle of the Somme centenary
will be led by Kirklees Museums and Galleries and the
Friends of Tolson and Ravensknowle. On the battle’s first day
(1 July 1916) over 21,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers
died. Amongst them were Robert Tolson and many others
from Huddersfield. In memory of Robert, his brother James
and all those from Huddersfield killed in the First World
War, the Tolson Memorial Museum was created and became
Kirklees’ largest War Memorial.
On 1 July the commemorations commence with an outdoor
Memorial Service in Ravensknowle Park to which everyone
is invited. For one night only see the powerful 1916 film
The Battle of the Somme and on Sunday 3 July join us for a drop
in event for all ages with historic re-enactors and activities for
children. Please see the listings for further details.

...we hope you can join us!
The Mummy Returns!
Bagshaw Museum lent some forty of its star objects to Beyond Beauty, a
major exhibition in London: Transforming the Body in Ancient Egypt. The
exhibition brought national acclaim to objects gathered from collections
around the UK, many reunited for the first time since their discovery.
Among the objects which travelled to London are some stunning funeral
masks. Two of the masks have not previously been on display, but when
they return in May will feature in a re-vamped Kingdom of Osiris gallery.
Other favourite pieces will also be re-displayed in new cases.
Join us on May 31st for a day long celebration of all things ancient
Egyptian to celebrate the return home of our wonderful treasures.
See details in main listings.

Change
Enigmatic paintings which use photographic sources
as a starting point. These seemingly ‘random’
images take a compassionate view of the human
condition; they reveal personalities from different
cultures: politicians, writers & artists, and explore
ideas around identity and self-perception, feminist
issues, protest & ‘civic pride’.
Students from local schools have worked with
artists using the theme of ‘change’ and the Science
curriculum as inspiration for a series of workshops.
Visual arts activities gave young people opportunities
to explore, experiment and discover both creatively
and scientifically resulting in this delightfully varied
and colourful exhibition.
