It’s no wonder Design Centre East is creating such
a serious buzz. Adjacent to the domes, it’s absolutely
burgeoning. Adding to 25 showrooms already on the first,
ground and fourth floors, a dedicated space has been
created on the second to make room for more dynamic
showrooms, while airy new ateliers have been established
at ground level. There’s a new café, too – the perfect
pit-stop once you’ve scoured the showrooms for every last
detail for your project.

If glamour and clever, creative thinking are what you’re after,
then head to the ground floor of Design Centre East. There’s
an air of sophistication at new arrival Marc de Berny.
The latest furniture collections draw on the talents of two
brilliant designers – Jean-Louis Deniot and Francis Sultana
– who offer bold avant-garde variations and classical
reinterpretations. Utilizing artisanal techniques and materials
such as lost-wax bronze, wood and lacquer, they are
juxtaposed with modern accents like laser-cut metal.
A stone’s throw away, Birgit Israel’s new emporium
reflects her unmistakable good taste. With over 20 years
in the industry, you can trust her judgement. Inspired by
Hollywood Regency and French design from the 1930s and
1940s, her work has a timeless quality. Bespoke furniture
is handmade in her German workshop by skilled craftsmen
using rich materials like shellac parchment, brass and bronze.
Evident to the eye as well as to the touch, reflective
surfaces are key: many pieces are highly polished. Keep
going to find more exciting treasures on the second floor.
WONDER WALLS
Take the lift or stroll over the Designer Walkway from the
domes for a smörgåsbord of more designer delights on the
second floor. If it’s wallcoverings you crave, two new arrivals
in Design Centre East are a must. Arte offers state-of-theart designs that adorn the walls of residential homes and
hospitality interiors in over 80 countries worldwide. Expect an
array of highly original and directional collections. Creativity

Continuing our route in the south dome, head to two new
showrooms who are known for their experience and knowledge.
Founded in 1928, Houlès is a French family-owned company
whose international reputation extends far beyond Paris. A
world-leader in the finest passementerie, it also offers curtain
poles, upholstery and curtain fabrics. The choice is exceptional,
encompassing both elaborate as well as more modern styles.
From high-end residences to restaurants and luxury hotels,
many have been selected for iconic interiors including the
Palace of Versailles and the restoration of the Bolshoi Theatre
in Moscow. The latest collections are resolutely contemporary
with Zen and Japanese influences. If you’re looking for a
treasure trove of door and window furniture, McKinney &
Co will be at the top of your list. They specialise in finials and
handles of every variety. Eclectic materials range from antiqued
brass, silver, copper and bronze to glass, leather, Perspex, wood
and water gilt. The team can advise on curtain poles, made-to-
measure pelmets and custom-finished coronas and handrails.
A bespoke range, made by British craftsmen, can be adapted
to clients’ needs.
TAKE A DESIGN JOURNEY
Those yet to discover Elise Som should make their way to
the ground floor in the centre dome. The collection of furniture

A hub of inspiring expertise and invention,
Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour is the
jumping-off point for the creativity of the
world’s best designers; here’s a taste of
where that journey leads
I
s there a more concentrated hub of creative energy in
Europe than Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour? It seems
doubtful: with 116 showrooms and more than 600 brands
on site, it’s pretty matchless when it comes down to both
the breadth of what’s on offer – from fabrics and wallpapers
to furniture, trimmings, lighting and bathrooms – and its
superlative quality. But what you see in the showrooms,
inspiring as it is, is really just a springboard – the start of a
much longer journey. In the hands of an interior designer,
products can end up in far-flung places, and at some of
the most prestigious addresses, or even be conceived from
scratch to a designer’s exacting specifications.
It’s a measure of the Design Centre’s influence that people
base themselves in the Chelsea Harbour area to be closer to
the action. “We purposely opened our office down the road,
because it’s the hub of everything; we go there all the time,”
says Alix Lawson of interior architects Lawson Robb. Lawson
cites Donghia/Rubelli and Lelievre among her must-use
fabric brands, but casts her net widely. Recent projects have
seen her use Altfield’s sparkling mica ‘Nautilus’ wallcovering
from Innovations in a deeply glamorous powder room, and
Davidson’s classic ‘Carlton’ table, in a glossy black sycamore
with patinated brass, to mark the centrepiece of a living space
in a Holland Park home.
“I would say that we used 60-70% of the suppliers at the
Design Centre,” says Robert Angell, whose portfolio includes

textures,” says Angell. He views the Design Centre as “an

So we don’t just go to place orders, but for inspiration, too.

Georgie Pearman of luxury Cotswolds hotel group Lucky
Onion echoes the sentiment that customer service and speed
are of the essence in hotel fit-outs, and uses Cole & Son,

the Design Centre not just for being a one-stop shop but for
the professionalism of the showroom staff. “Tim Page Carpets,
for example, is used to working on hotel projects – that’s
important because we have tight deadlines for fit-outs and it’s
very pressurised; it takes a certain skill set to be able to come
in and be that organised and efficient when everyone is on
site at the same time.”
Bespoke capabilities
Creating tailor-made products is one of the most
exciting aspects of the Design Centre showrooms’
work; unique pieces make for unforgettable, one-ofa kind spaces. Interior designer Russell Sage turned
to wallpaper and fabric specialists Fromental when
he was in search of just such a statement look for
The Goring, a 69-room luxury hotel in London’s
Belgravia.
As part of a top-to-toe refurbishment, Sage collaborated with Fromental to create scenic wallcovering for the hotel’s front hall that is the perfect
encapsulation of the hotel’s brand – classic yet
idiosyncratic. An Arcadian scene unfolds around
the room, but what appears to be a landscape in the
style of grand 19th-century block-printed papers
reveals itself, on closer inspection, to be rather more
irreverent. A menagerie of exotic beasts includes
tongue-in-cheek representations of the Goring
family, including founder Otto Richard Goring
as a walrus and current managing director David
Morgan Hewitt as a gorilla in a judge’s wig, a nod
to his legal background. The wallcovering, which
is hand-gilded silver leaf on paper, took four artists
around eight weeks to produce. “We are thrilled
with Fromental’s imaginative interpretation of the
very unusual brief for the Goring’s refurbished
lobby,” says Sage. “This is Fromental breathtaking
quality at its very best.”

Long-term relationships and the collaborative nature
of many projects can lead to some deeply expressive
results. When Martin Hulbert needed 250 metres of Jim
Thompson silk in a short space of time for the dining room at
Buckinghamshire’s iconic Cliveden House hotel, it was his 25year relationship with Fox Linton that helped smooth the way.
Hulbert has also just completed Spring Cottage, Cliveden’s
riverside bolthole, using fabrics from GP & J Baker and Lewis
& Wood to furnish the house in a style of luxurious comfort.
He’s currently working with Lewis & Wood on a bespoke
printed linen and velvet fabric: bespoke design is “exciting, but
it’s a challenge as well,” he says. “You build up relationships,
and it’s nice to take that further and work even more closely
with people on some things.”

Kit Kemp, the creative force behind Firmdale hotels,
incorporates many products from the Design Centre into her
projects, which are known for their eclecticism and originality.
Kemp’s work is full of unexpected twists – for example, using
a highly traditional hand-blocked floral fabric from Hazelton
House at Jean Monro for the library chairs at Ham Yard Hotel,
and pairing it with a Persian carpet inspired by 17th-century
designs and ikat lampshades.
Specialist expertise and the ability to either tweak existing
designs or create bespoke objects from scratch are a huge
draw for the interior designers who use the Design Centre.
Decorus, for example, has a wide catalogue of ‘standard’

furniture products but also takes on special commissions,
like the show-stopping champagne bar for the Rosebery
Lounge at the 198-room Mandarin Oriental in London. Interior
designers GA Design came up with the concept, but it was
up to Decorus to find a way to create its deceptively simple
curves and apply a burnished metal finish. “Creating that
compound curve was very hard to do,” says Decorus’ director
Stuart Sharpless, who explains how the patinated metal is
a resin compound applied to an MDF base, a technique the
company has developed itself.
“We’ve worked all over the world and it’s amazing to
see the things we’ve designed and produced,” continues
Sharpless. “And people really do come from all over the world
to the Design Centre – for example, an interior designer from
Beirut, working for a member of the Saudi royal family, came
to see us the other day. It’s a global destination, and we feel
lucky to be here.”

This Edwardian property in Godalming,
Surrey, may have its roots in the Arts & Crafts
movement, but the brief for interior architect
Maurizio Pellizzoni was to create the feel of the
Hamptons in the Home Counties. The project
presents a mix of old and new, since, while the
building was extended as part of the refurbishment, Pellizzoni’s clients still wanted to hang
on to many of their existing pieces of furniture.
The results are personal and eclectic – as any
home that has evolved over time should be –
but given a new coherence under Pellizzoni’s
creative instruction. Here, Hamptons style
SLEEK OFFICE REFURBISHMENT
Expectations run high when an interior design firm undertakes an
office refurbishment for its own staff, but leading creative practice
Taylor Howes’ new workplace doesn’t disappoint. The firm moved
from a detached house in Chelsea to a new 5,000sq ft office on
Knighsbridge’s Cheval Place, the site of a former Tesla and Aston
Martin garage. Bigger premises were chosen to house the expanding
team, but it also presented an opportunity to firmly stamp the new
office with the Taylor Howes aesthetic. Although there is a slightly
industrial edge to the look, this is tempered with sophisticated
furniture and soft furnishing, with many items sourced from the
Design Centre. Wallpaper comes courtesy of Altfield while fabrics
have been sourced from Dedar, Lelievre, Rubelli, Sahco and
Zimmer + Rohde. Taylor Howes also collaborated with Decca (Bolier)
on a sensational bespoke boardroom/meeting table, made from
timber with a burnished brass frame and marble top, and chairs in
a customised matching burnished brass. Founder & chief executive
Karen Howes’ desk is also custom made, derived from a piece from
Decca’s Cosmopolitan collection, but in high gloss sycamore with a
grey leather top. “We have developed a very good relationship with
Decca over the years and are very lucky to have a number of their
pieces in our new studio,” says Howes. “We’re big fans of their classic
contemporary furniture, which complements our style very well. The
Design Centre is a very important part of our selection process – and
more importantly, it is somewhere that we love to visit to inspire us for
our upcoming projects.”

For the exacting marine industry,
products need to be extremely high
performance – whether that means
colour-fast fabrics, or materials that
are resistant to chlorine and sea
water. And all of these needs are
incorporated without compromising
on a sophisticated luxury finish; in
this market, detail is king and clients
want only the best. Leading yacht
designer Andrew Winch shows how
it’s done on board Ace, a 87m motor
yacht built by German shipyard
Lürssen. Boasting helicopter landing
capabilities and one of the most
luxurious spas ever seen on a charter
yacht, Ace also has some sumptuously
comfortable interiors. The palette is
mostly sparkling white, with splashes
of blue, cream and silver, but this
typically nautical colour scheme is far
from conventional.

that might work. Custom samples
are then made to gauge the true
idea of how the colours and textures
will look, before the final carpet is
commissioned and installed.

translates as a mix of smart tailoring, cool blue
and neutral and natural materials.
The scheme features many items sourced from
the Design Centre, from a Vaughan table lamp,
in classic blue and white ceramic, to Zoffany
wallpaper in the cloakroom and a Pierre Frey
fabric covering a smart club chair in the home
office. In the master bedroom, the designer has
included a chaise upholstered in Mulberry fabric
and chairs in a Zoffany wool paisley.
Pellizzoni’s studio is a stone’s throw from the
Design Centre, so he’s naturally a regular visitor.
“It’s the perfect location to get ideas from or pick
up as many samples as we need for our projects.
It’s also an easy place for me to take clients so
that they can see a larger piece of the material we propose to use, or some of the beautiful
furniture, lights and accessories on display.”
‘Fontaine’, a dramatic end table with inverted tripod
supports and globe detail, brings glamour to the
stepped lobby area
Nowhere else will you find such a broad collection of products suitable for
the hospitality industry than the Design Centre; its showrooms regularly
supply the grandes dames of the hotel world, as well as the boutique end
of the spectrum, where a more eclectic and homely sense of luxury is
usually the requirement.
At the Titanic Deluxe Belek – a 600-room all-inclusive hotel in the
Turkish resort region of Antalya – interior design practice Arketipo Design
has made extensive use of furniture from Christopher Guy. A dramatic
stepped lobby area with cascading pools breaks up the space into smaller
terraced seating areas populated by Christopher Guy sofas in cream
upholstery and dark varnished wood – a smart, classic combination that
is something of a signature for the firm. ‘Ovale’ dining chairs, ‘Harper’
coffee tables, ‘Constellation’ consoles and ‘Saskia’ lounge chairs have been
used elsewhere to dramatic effect, producing an incredibly coherent look
across the vast amount of public space, not least because everything was
sourced from a single supplier.
According to Christopher Guy’s showroom at the Design Centre,
“Different designers work in different ways and we have the ability to assist
them with whatever their requirements are. Some designers will know what
they want and simply want us to make it happen, while others look for us
to have more input in the design process. When making bespoke pieces,
we work alongside the designer, guiding them towards the creation of a
product which is both possible to achieve and which also fits their brief.”
