The following information should be useful for
members of the working press planning to cover
Lenoir-Rhyne home games at Moretz Stadium.
Press Passes
Passes for the working press should be obtained
from the Sports Information Office in advance of
game day. Credentials will be limited to working
media only. If media credentials are not mailed,
they will be available at will call.
Parking
Press parking at Moretz Stadium is available
on a limited basis at the north end of the practice
football field behind the press box. Requests for
parking passes must be made well in advance of
game day through the Lenoir-Rhyne Sports Information Office.
Press Box
The press box is located atop the west stands of
Moretz Stadium and will accomodate approximately 44 persons and two radio broadcast crews.
Only members of the working press, visiting
coaches and scouts with credentials and official
representatives will be allowed access to the press
box. Refreshments will be available in the press box
just prior to the game.
Radio
Visiting radio crews should request permission
to broadcast games from Moretz Stadium through
the Sports Information Office. A courtesy line will
be provided to visiting radio stations, but they will
be responsible for all long distance calls.

Overview
The Lenoir-Rhyne Football Team had
another record-breaking season in 2014.
Under first-year head coach Ian Shields,
the Bears went 11-1 and captured their
fourth straight South Atlantic Conference
Championship. LR was also ranked as high
as No. 3 in the nation and put together a
perfect regular season for the first time
since 1962.
Lenoir-Rhyne said goodbye to 20 seniors
and several All-Americans who contributed
to the Bears’ recent run of excellence but a
closer look at the roster shows several talented younger players returning and ready
to lead.
The Bears return six starters on both offense and defense in addition to a number
of special teams players this fall. A leaguehigh 11 players also earned preseason allconference honors for Lenoir-Rhyne this
year so the potential is there for another
outstanding season.
Offense
Lenoir-Rhyne’s spread option offense
attack continued its ground-gaining assault
in 2014. Last year, the Bears set an NCAA
Division II single-season rushing record
average of 416.2 yards per game.
Those numbers can’t be produced, of
course, without the play of the offensive
line. Lenoir-Rhyne has fielded one of the
best units in the nation over the last several
years and this season could add to that list
with the return of three starters.
The line is anchored by senior tackle Joe
Ray (Atlanta, Ga.). Ray is already one of
the best players in school history and enters this season as a two-time All-American
and Jacobs Blocking Trophy winner (201314), given annually to the top offensive
lineman in school history.
The Bears also welcome back senior
center Dale Howard (Baxley, Ga.), a firstteam preseason All-SAC pick, and junior
tackle Jacob Slagle (Sharpsburg, Ga.).
Both players are entering their second full
seasons as starters.
The Bears need to replace its two offensive guards – All-American Jim Bayer and
Matt Villanti.
Lenoir-Rhyne senior Joe Ray has won the
Jacobs Blocking Trophy the last two years,
given annually to the top offensive lineman
in the SAC.
Sophomores Tyler Evans (Brookwood,
Ga.) and Jaleel Roberts (Charlotte, N.C.)
look to have the upper hand coming into
the season. However, sophomore Issac
Saxon (Fayetteville, Ga.) and junior Callan
Gillison (Alpharetta, Ga.) will fight for
playing time.
The backfield is young but has a lot of
potential despite the loss of running backs
Chris Robinson and Jarrod Spears and
quarterback Miles Freeman. All three were
all-conference selections.
Junior Michael Patrick (Atlanta, Ga.)
takes over at the B-Back position. Patrick
earned All-SAC preseason accolades this
fall and is the team’s top returning rusher
(788 yards and nine scores). Patrick has
seen time as a slotback.
The coaches are excited to see what
sophomore Calvin Edwards (Salisbury,
N.C.) can do as he likely assumes one of
the slotback spots. The speedy Edwards
made the most of his time last year, totaling 150 yards on the ground on just 18
carries.
Junior James Phillips (Carrollton, Ga.)
gets the nod at the other slotback position
entering camp. Phillips rushed for 166
yards and a touchdown in 2014 and has
seen time as a starter.
Look for seniors Kevin Eckel (Haverford, Pa.) and Kristaan Ivory (Los Angeles, Calif.) and juniors Dewone Young
(Sacramento, Calif.) and Brandon Smith
(Lilesville, N.C.) to be in the backfield rotation as well this fall.
Sophomore Evin Sims (Greenwood,
S.C.), one of the fastest players on the
team, takes over at quarterback. Sims
performed admirably and gained valuable
experience late last season as he led the
Bears to three victories including a key win
over Carson-Newman on the road in his
first career start. Sims (265 total yards and six scores) will
be backed up by either redshirt freshman
Tyler Williams (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) or
sophomore Kaleb Scott (Mount Albert,
Ontario, CANADA).
The Bears anticipate great production
from their wide receivers as both starters
return in junior Victor Brannan (Powder
Springs, Ga.) and senior Greyson Wells
(West Jefferson, N.C.).
Brannan was a Second-Team All-SAC
selection last year after leading LR in receptions (21), yards receiving (421) and touchdowns (three) while Wells added 140 yards
and a score. Wells, an outstanding blocker,
hopes to replicate his sophomore season in
2013 (410 yards and seven touchdowns).

Defense
The unit has a chance to be special again
even though it loses All-Americans Blake
Baker, Tanner Botts and O’neil Blake, three
of the best defensive players in school history.
Despite the departures, Lenoir-Rhyne
does return six starters and several younger
players who saw plenty of time last year.
There are a number of Bears who could
step in and continue the dominant defensive tradition at LR.
Up front, Lenoir-Rhyne is led by junior
tackle Chris Green (Albany, Ga.), an AllSAC honoree. Green (44 tackles and 2.5
sacks) has his sights set on an outstanding
season and is a potential All-American.
Backing up Green is sophomore Paul
Sloan (Darien, Ga.).
The Bears also return both defensive
ends in junior Lendre Sparrow (Green
Cove Springs, Fla.) and senior Placid
Ajoku (Powder Springs, Ga.).
The athletic Sparrow, at 6-3 and 255
pounds, was a first-team all-conference
preseason honoree after totaling 44 tackles,
three sacks and two fumble recoveries in
2014. Sparrow could be in for a breakout
year.
Ajoku came up with some big plays last
season including a 70-yard fumble return
for a score against Newberry and finished
with 24 tackles and three sacks.
Lenoir-Rhyne will look at either sophomore Myles Braswell-Sample (Chapel
Hill, N.C.) or senior Adrian Hart (Stafford, Va.) as it breaks in a new starter at
defensive tackle.
LR junior Rodney Singleton (Hawthorne, Fla.), an all-league performer and
the 2013 SAC Defensive Freshman Of
The Year, anchors the linebacking corps.
Singleton has compiled 170 tackles in his
first two seasons with the Bears.
Junior linebacker Jordan Forney
(Belmont, N.C.) was a preseason all-league
honoree and could be in for a big year.
Forney had 43 tackles last season while
senior David Wilkerson (Danville, Calif.)
and sophomore Cedric Harris (Gainesville, Ga.) are two players to keep an eye
on.
In the defensive backfield, Lenoir-Rhyne
may have one of the best safety tandems
in the nation with junior Marcus Kincaid
(Morganton, N.C.) and senior Chris Shaffer (Charlotte, N.C.).
Probable Starting Lineup
Lenoir-Rhyne senior defensive back Chris
Shaffer finished with 71 tackles and three
interceptions last year and earned all-league
preseason honors.

finishing second on the squad in tackles
(77) while Shaffer totaled 71 takedowns
to go along with three interceptions and
a playoff touchdown. Shaffer was a preseason all-league pick.
Lenoir-Rhyne has to find two new cornerbacks but is confident junior C.J. Cody
(Powder Springs, Fla.) and sophomore
Cliff Barrett (Columbia, S.C.) can fill the
roles.
Cody became a starter down the stretch
last season and played extremely well, totaling 28 tackles and two picks, while talented
redshirt freshmen Kyle Dugger (Fayetteville, Ga.) and Molick Scott (Browns Summit, N.C.) could press during preseason for
playing time.

Ian Shields will begin his second season as
Head Football Coach at Lenoir-Rhyne University in 2015. Hired on January 14, 2014, Shields is the
20th Head Coach in school history and took
over one of the top Division II programs in
the country.
Shields kept the Bears’ recent tradition of
excellence going in 2014, as Lenoir-Rhyne
finished the year with an 11-1 record and a
perfect 7-0 mark in South Atlantic Conference
play.
The Bears also won a fourth straight league
title, earned the top seed in Super Region No.
2 for the second straight season and garnered
a No. 8 final national ranking in the AFCA
NCAA Division II Coaches Poll. During the
year, the Bears were ranked as high as third in
the country.
In addition, the Bears put together their first
perfect season in 52 years and set an NCAA
Division II single-season record for rushing
yards (416.2 ypg) behind a vaunted spreadoption attack. Seven Bears earned some form
of All-American honors after the season while
Shields was named the SAC Coach Of The
Year.
Shields came to Lenoir-Rhyne University
after spending five seasons as Offensive Coordinator at Army (2009-13). Prior to the 2013
campaign, Shields was elevated to Associate
Head Coach
In 2013, Army finished with the third-best
rushing offense in NCAA Division I at 309.8
yards per game.
Under Shields, Army also led the nation in
rushing in both 2011 (346.9 ypg) and 2012 (a
school-record 369.8 yards per game) while having the triple-option offense in place.
The 2011 squad was the first in U.S. Military
Academy history to crack the 4,000-yard mark
(4,158) on the ground while the 2012 team set
a school record for total yards (5,235) on offense.
Shields also coached Trent Steelman (200912), one of the most prolific quarterbacks in
school history.
t
Steelman set Army records in rushing
attempts (772), rushing yards (3,320) and
100-yard rushing games (12) by a quarterback. Steelman also broke the school records for
career rushing touchdowns (45) and became
the first Black Knight to both rush and pass
for 2,000 yards in a career.
Shields was also part of a staff that led
Army to its first bowl victory in 25 years in
2009, a win over SMU in the Armed Forces
Bowl.
Prior to Army, Shields served one year as
offensive coordinator and assistant head coach
in 2008 at California Polytechnic University
and led the squad to the nation’s-best scoring
offense (44.6 ppg) and total offense (490 ypg).
Cal Poly, an NCAA Division I FCS school,
also won the Great West Conference Championship, earned a No. 8 national ranking and
produced two First-Team All-Americans.
Shields was also the Head Coach at Eastern
Oregon (2006-07), where led the squad to a
winning campaign in 2006 after being picked to
finish last and coached six all-conference players and three NAIA Academic All-Americans.
Shields’ other coaching stints included
offensive coordinator at Cal Poly (2004-05),
Bucknell (2003), Saint Mary’s (2000-02) and
Eastern Oregon (1997-99).
Shields helped lead Cal Poly to Great West
Conference Championships in 2004 and 2005
and the school’s first playoff berth and victory
in 2005 in his first stint with the school.
Shields, a 1994 graduate of Oregon State
in speech communication, was a three-year
letterwinner (1991-93) as a quarterback for
the Beavers and served as the team’s starter in
1993.
Shields earned his master’s in interdisciplinary studies (education, communication and
exercise sport science) from Oregon State in
1996, where he also started his coaching career
as a graduate assistant.
Shields and his wife, Norma, a former collegiate volleyball player at Eastern Oregon, are
the proud parents of three sons: Beau, Jonah
and Jordan.
On Tuesday, January 14, 2014, Ian Shields became the 20th Head Football Coach in
school history. Shields came to Lenoir-Rhyne after spending five seasons as Offensive Coordinator at Army (2009-13). Shields led Lenoir-Rhyne to an 11-1 mark and
a fourth straight South Atlantic Conference Championship last fall.
