The other day, between two flights at an airport, the man sitting

The internet has now totally consumed our lives. You can’t hide

While taking along your laptop on holiday is a no-no, hand-held

I would like to share our

of Jodhpur in Rajasthan in
March 2012.
We stayed at the Desertscape
RCI resort, and loved both
the city and the resort. We
saw the Mehrangarh Fort,
which was more beautiful
than we had imagined. It
is perhaps the only fort
which has a lift installed
inside to facilitate lazy
holidaymakers to see as much
of the fort as possible! It is
truly a magnificent piece
of architecture, beautifully
restored with all the standard
international tourist facilities
like audio tours, certified
guide tours (which we took),
and courteous and helpful onsite staff attired in colourful
local garb with magnificent
turbans and ready smiles.
We had the best Rajasthani

and the best Lassi in the world!

clubhouse, which was huge. It had a swimming pool, sauna,
ayurvedic spa room, very large and fully equipped gym and an
activity room with billiards/pool table, table tennis, chess and a
separate cards room. The resort provides free use of bicycles for
the guests and my son made good use of this facility. The resort
is built to resemble a street scene in a city, with clear blue skies
all around and no tall buildings to mar the view. Peaceful and
serene surroundings welcome you wherever you go.
Thank you for this unforgettable experience, RCI!

A GIFT TO MY PARENTS
I was completely exhausted from my routine and was
desperately looking for a change, when I got a call from RCI
about booking my offer week. This was my first holiday after
becoming a member, so I
was quite excited. I was very
confused about which place to
visit, but I was sure about one
thing: my first RCI holiday
would be dedicated to my
parents, especially my mother.
The obvious choice was Goa –
the city of leisure, enjoyment
and relaxation. I immediately
booked a 2 BHK villa for six at the Royal Goan Beach Club
– Haathi Mahal. When I found out that I could have one
more villa for a very nominal additional charge, I jumped with
excitement and asked my maternal uncle to join us.
Our very first look at the resort doubled our holiday pleasure
and we fell in love with the place. The resort is located in South
Goa and very close to Cavelossim Beach. There was a huge
swimming pool, which was a wonderful place to start our day.
We enjoyed karaoke at the resort every evening.
The fully-equipped kitchen gave us immense comfort, and the
staff was very cooperative.

compared to any 5-star hotel.
This was the first time we
had stayed in a single place
for 7 days, and we never
wanted to move out of the

facilities and activities.
Thanks once again, RCI and

SPAIN
Viva
After watching Hrithik Roshan’s Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, my
family and I were taken in by Spain’s magic, and decided to visit
as soon as possible. We checked the RCI website and booked two
resorts, one at Malaga and another at Salou, Tarragona. Both
resorts are on the east coast of Spain. We picked these resorts so
that we could cover the complete coastal line from Barcelona in the
northeast, to Gibraltar, which lies on the southern tail of Spain.
!
RCI member Bharat Shah explores Spain – the
land of the setting sun – to discover the depth of
the country’s extraordinary culture and history.
Madrid: The Land of Many Streams
Our first stop was Madrid, Spain’s capital city. We took our tour
of Madrid on foot, as everything worth seeing is within a 2-3 km
range. Plaza Mayor is right in the centre of Madrid, so staying in
this area was ideal for taking in all the tourist spots and historical
monuments. There were many street performers and live statues
in the city square, and we were thoroughly entertained.
You can walk
miles and
miles on the
white sands
of Marbella
Beach, looking
at the deep blue
Mediterranean
Sea, which is
breathtaking.
The next morning, we took a flight to Malaga, where we rented a
car for the duration of our stay. A GPS is a must for those opting
to drive around. We chose Club la Costa at Sierra Marina, as
our RCI resort. It is one of the finest beach resorts and is a
45-minute drive from Malaga Airport. On our first day there, we
went to the Marbella Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches I
have ever seen. You can walk miles and miles on the white sands
of Marbella Beach, looking at the deep blue Mediterranean Sea,
which is breathtaking. There are plenty of shops, cafes, bars and
shopping malls in the area; enough to keep you busy all day.
The next day, we set out on a 2½ hour drive to Gibraltar. Being
a part of the United Kingdom, Gibraltar requires a UK visa. We
visited the Cuevas de Nerja or the Nerja Caves, one of Spain’s

most popular historical sites.
All I can say is that it is
difficult to describe the beauty
of these caves in mere words.
It is a must-see for anyone
visiting Spain.
Of Bullrings
and Bikers
Our next experience was
Salou in Tarragona, which
is a 1½ hour drive from
Barcelona Airport. We
stayed at RCI’s Jardines
Paraisol Apartment. Salou
is a pleasant small town
bustling with restaurants,
shops, cafes and bars. Our
resort was a 10-minute walk
from the beach. On the sea
front, there is an array of
fountains forming different
shapes, and a kids’ play area
to keep children entertained
for hours.
We were fortunate enough to
have picked the Halloween
weekend to visit Salou.
Bartenders and shop owners
across the town were dressed
in scary costumes, and kids
were roaming the streets
dressed as well-made-up
ghouls! At about 1am, there
was a chilling Halloween
show held at the Government
Centre, which was a truly
spooky experience!
Weather Report
Summer (June – September)
This is the not-to-be-missed season of open air
terrazas and music festivals. Northern Spain’s summer
weather ranges from warm to pleasantly cool. However, the
southern and central regions of Spain are regularly hit by
high temperatures and heat waves.
Winter (December – March)
January is the coldest time of the year in Spain, and
December to March are the coldest months, perfect for
skiing in the mountains. The winters are generally cold and
dry, but milder than in neighbouring European countries.
Spring and Fall
Spain in the spring and fall is generally temperate and ranges
from warm to cool, though at times summer and winter can
encroach upon the other seasons, turning four seasons into
what may sometimes feel like two.
HOW TO GET THERE
Spain is well-connected with regular flights from
all Indian metros.

SPAIN
We moved on to Ronda, a
small town set around a deep
gorge called El Tajo. There is
a huge bridge called Puente
Nuevo over this gorge,
on which there is a small
museum. There are bullrings
and statues of matadors
peppering the town. Plaza
de Toros is one of the oldest
bullrings in Spain. On our
way back to the resort, we
saw a whole group of bikers
on their Harley Davidsons,
complete with Harley gear.

Breathless in Vegas
Our first sight of Las Vegas was breathtaking with the city
illuminated like a bride, with a zillion lights adorning it and an
air of liveliness in the atmosphere. We could not stop wondering
how desert land could turn into such a lively and happening
place with visitors from all over the world. We were agog with
wonder at the huge skyscrapers and the term ‘larger than life’
took on a new meaning. Soon, we were settled in comfortably
at the Holiday Inn.
Sensational Strip
Walking along the ‘Strip’ is a sensual delight. The Strip extends
for about 4.2 miles and is the most exciting place to see. It
abounds with hotels like The Venetian, Mandalay Bay, Caesars
Palace and Treasure Island. These are visual delights as they
are theme-based. One should not miss any of the free shows,
especially, the Bellagio Fountains with dancing fountains set to
music. And then there are the casinos, the most exciting and
addictive way to acquiring a lighter wallet!
Soon it was time to return. The visual treats offered by Las Vegas
stayed with us long after we reached Dallas and resumed our
mundane duties.
‘I Do’ in Vegas
Gambling capital it may be, but over the years, this pleasure
capital has also gained popularity as a wedding destination.
Today over 1,20,000 people get wedded here every year. With
celebrities like Elvis & Priscilla, Britney Spears & Jason Allen
Alexander, Paul Newman & Joanne Woodward, Mike Tyson
& Lakiha Spicer, Pamela Anderson & Rick Solomon, Andre
Agassi & Steffi Graf, Richard Gere & Cindy Crawford, Frank
Sinatra & Mia Farrow having chosen Vegas as the venue of
their wedding, the not-so-famous too tie the knot here these
days. In fact, you have bizarre options – a walk down the aisle
with an Elvis look-alike holding your hand or a drive-through
wedding… the options are numerous and the pastors willing, if
you are 18 and above, madly in love and looking for an out-ofthis-world wedding, then this is the place.
Beginner’s luck
Our first sight of Las Vegas
was breathtaking with the city
illuminated like a bride, with a
zillion lights adorning it…
To the tourist and the gambler, gambling is all about luck.
To those in the business, gambling is business. To the visitor,
gambling is a few hours a day, while to the casinos, gambling is
a 24/7 business. The gambler believes he can laugh all the way
to the bank, but the casinos know that ultimately the fortune
will belong to the house. But if you want to try your hand, slot
A Vegas for Everyone
Of course Las Vegas is about gambling, but there’s so much more
that often goes unmentioned. Vegas has sunny mild weather
two-thirds of the year, some of the finest hotels in the world, the
best entertainment anywhere and unique shopping experiences.
There are also magnificent options for outdoor enthusiasts, like
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Lake Mead
National Recreation Area and Toiyabe National Forest, which are
some of the most exotic wilderness resources in North America.
The locals are a very friendly lot and they do their bit to make
Vegas the ‘fun capital’.
The Grand Experience
Apart from Vegas, we also took in the Grand Canyon, which is
a 5-hour journey by car from Vegas. If you want to go hiking in
these majestic environs, you need to spend a day or two. When
you look at the Canyon, you actually understand that you are just
a small cog in God’s wheel.

machines are a good try out, because they allow you to enjoy casino
gambling at low or high stakes. Except at the oldest and lowesttier casinos, all slot machines are now multi-denominational,
meaning you can play them for a penny, nickel, dime, quarter,
and, perhaps, dollar and up. You don’t need change to do so; slot
machines no longer have slots. You load them up with bills, then
play at your chosen denomination. Higher-stakes players can find
machines that accept bets of $1 to $500 ($2,500 to load up a $500
video poker machine).
The other thing that attracts people to slots is the fact that no
human intervention is required. Slots do not have the adversarial
atmosphere of the table games. Machines are less intimidating at least more neutral - than dealers and pit bosses. A patron can
sit at a machine as long as his stamina and money last, and never
get bothered by a soul.

Beyond gambling
If you thought Vegas was only about gambling and more
gambling, think again. In fact, Sin City also offers some of the
most spectacular shows and sightseeing.
weather report
The best time to visit Las Vegas is from March to May
and August to October. However, if you are an indoors
person, the time of the year really doesn’t matter. If your
vacation plans include golf, tennis, running, hiking, biking
or boating, March, April, early May, October, November
or early December are the best times.
The ideal time for spectacular deals is December (after the
National Finals Rodeo in early December and excluding
the week between Christmas and New Year), January and
during the scorching summer months.
Remember that the weather in December, January and
February can be very volatile with high winds, chill, rain
and snow, with intermittent days when temperatures are
mild and the sun will shine.
From mid-May through mid-September it can be very
hot. During these months, they say it’s wise to do what
gamblers and lizards do - stay indoors or under a rock.

The Land of
EGYPT
Colossal monuments, the heat
of the desert, the shocking
turquoise waters of the
world’s longest river, the
overwhelming spirit of the
Pyramids… the reasons why
you should go to Egypt are
endless. Travel to Egypt with
RCI, to discover a world of
wonder, beauty and awe.
Egypt is the land of many dreams and histories. Over 5,000 years
of civilisation have gone into building Egypt’s cultural heritage.
A history of invasions, battles, victories, losses and glory has
given Egyptians their innate sense of strength and independence.
Suffice it to say, no other place captures one’s imagination like
Egypt does.
A Tourist Paradise
Egyptians are known for their welcoming attitude towards
tourists. Tourism is the second largest industry in Egypt,
accounting for an average of 11 billion USD, with about
12 million tourists visiting every year. If you respect the local
customs and traditions, especially in places of worship and
remote locations where old traditions are maintained with
sanctity, Egypt promises you the experience of a lifetime.
Museums, Mortuaries and
Mountainside Temples
If you’re planning a holiday in Egypt, make it a long one. The
number of places to visit and things to see is as endless as the vast
Western Desert. Giza is the site of some of the oldest monuments
in the world, including ancient Egyptian mortuaries and sacred
structures like the Great Sphinx, the Pyramid of Giza and an
impressive number of temples. Saqqara is another vast burial
ground, which served as the necropolis for the ancient Egyptian
capital of Memphis. Don’t miss the world’s oldest standing step
pyramid at Saqqara.
Abu Simbel, located near the Sudanese border, is an archaeological
site comprising two massive rock temples originally carved out
of a mountainside in the 13th century BC. The twin temples
were carved during the reign of Pharaoh Ramesses II, as a lasting

monument to himself and his queen Nefertari, and features
massive statues and pillars of Ramesses.
Other sites to visit are Luxor, the world’s greatest open-air
museum, and the Sinai Peninsula with its rich coral reefs and
biblical history.
Winter: November - March (23-30°C)
The days are pleasant and warm, while the evenings and
nights are cool and thoroughly invigorating through all
of Egypt.
Fancy a swim among dolphins and dugongs, and a look at some
of the most awe-inspiring flora and fauna? Some of the best
seaside activities in eastern Egypt are by the banks of the Red
Sea. The Red Sea Riviera is a long coastal area full of beautiful
beaches leading up the Red Sea itself.
Year-round sunshine makes it a perfect diving destination
throughout the year. Even in the first 3 months of the year, when
water temperatures range from 21-22°C, you can still swim,
snorkel and dive to your heart’s content in the crystal blue waters.
DON’T MISS OUT ON
Valley of the Kings
An absolute must-visit. The Valley of the Kings or Biban
El Moluk is the principal burial ground of the most
esteemed pharaohs of the Egyptian New Kingdom. Hiding
the secret treasures and mummies of several of Egypt’s
ancient royalty, the Valley of the Kings is best-known for
the tomb of Tutankhamun.
Pyramids of Giza
There is perhaps nothing more mysterious and worthy of
seeing in Egypt than the Great Pyramids of Giza. These
are the pyramids of Khufu, Kafhre and Menkaura.
Cairo
The city is teeming with bazaars and restaurants where
you can buy your taste of Egyptian culture.
The Nile River
This river nourished Egypt and turned it into the place of
wonder that it is. A must-visit.
Egyptian Museum
Since it would be unwise to leave the Egyptian treasures
in the tombs they were found in, the archaeologists put
them in the Egyptian Museum. Put this high on
your itinerary.
The Dance Dynasty
Egypt is also known for its various forms of folk art and dances,
peculiar to each region of the country. Inhabitants of Suez,
Ismailiya and Port Said are famous for group dances accompanied
by music played on the traditional semsomiya – an old string
instrument. The Nubians have probably the most colourful and
folkloric performances, with vibrant costumes. The sword dance
of the Sinai is another performance worth watching

fantasy cruise
This season, RCI highly recommends the pampering
of a lifetime! Sail away on some of the finest ships
in the world. Here’s a selection of some of the most
sought-after cruises to choose from.
Ships that Launch
a ThousanD Dreams
The greatest thing about a
cruise is that you have to
pack and unpack only once,
but your destination changes
everyday!
When it comes to being pampered, there’s nothing like being
on a cruise ship. As if being suspended in an endless body of
water is not calming enough, the service on a cruise ship is
tailor-made for decadence and luxury. Before planning a cruise
however, questions about the best cruise line and the best route,
abound. The thing to remember while considering these factors
is, everyone has different tastes and priorities. There isn’t a single
perfect cruise experience for everyone, but there sure are several
to choose from. RCI offers its members a variety of cruises. Read
on about the best cruises, and take your pick out of RCI’s grand
cruise buffet!
Azamara Club Cruises may only enlist two ships, but
their itineraries reach far across Europe, Asia and South America.
You’ll find a country club atmosphere on these medium-sized
ultra-premium ships, in part due to the more casual dress policy
and wood-paneled lounges. Expect exceptional cuisine and
service, and outstanding accommodation.
Carnival Cruise Lines is not only the world’s largest
cruise line, but also the most popular. Hallmarks of this fleet
include the cruise industry’s most vibrant nightlife, superlative
food and large cabins. If you love Las Vegas, these ships will
certainly fit the bill since the entertainment is dazzling and the
casino is lively throughout the day and night.
Celebrity Cruises offers an upscale cruise experience
with a focus on food and service. These award-winning ships
have a casual European atmosphere, with a great selection of
modern art and contemporary design. The fleet’s newest vessels
offer plenty of balcony staterooms, gourmet restaurants and
posh spas.
Norwegian Cruise Line is best known for ‘Freestyle
Cruising’, a big hit for those seeking an unstructured seagoing
vacation. Eat whenever you want and without a dress code, in

the main dining rooms. Highlights on the newest ships include
an ultra-chic lounge with plush beds and bowling lanes, a lounge
made of ice, Blue Man Group performances and a Cirque du
Soleil dinner theatre.
Oceania Cruises says it isn’t a luxury cruise line but
the experience is close to it. Oceania’s food is overseen by
Jacques Pepin and is amongst the best in the cruise industry.
The 640-passenger ships fill up quickly with loyal guests
who enjoy single-seating dining in four restaurants, and very
polished service.
Princess Cruises has a faithful following of travellers
who love the ships’ dining programmes, where you may choose
assigned seating or dining whenever and with whomever you
please. Today, Princess ships feature contemporary design and
stylish amenities alongside very good food, pleasant staterooms,
friendly service and superior shore excursions.
Regent Seven Seas Cruises provides a true luxury
cruise experience with large staterooms, superb dining and
exceptional service. Both ships host less than 700 guests,
showcase Scandinavian décor and offer extraordinary spas
operated by Carita of Paris.
Royal Caribbean International is amongst the
most innovative fleets in the industry, boasting of the world’s
largest cruise ships. Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas offer
an unprecedented set of onboard experiences: Two surfing wave
pools, high-diving shows at an outdoor amphitheatre, scuba
lessons, a boardwalk carousel, street performers and much more

The Perfect Honeymoon
My Fantastic Family
Cruise Vacations
Every couple wants that perfect honeymoon. For us, it was a
dream come true! My husband and I had been planning this trip
for many months and after much deliberation, we decided to
take a cruise vacation. We settled on the Royal Caribbean 5-day
cruise with stops at Belize City, Belize and Cozumel, Mexico.
We boarded the massive ship, Liberty of the Seas, at Ft. Lauderdale,
USA. We explored the entire ship within the first few hours, and
were amazed to find restaurants, a golf course, banquet halls,
an auditorium, an ice skating rink, a FlowRider (artificial wave
surfing), 2 large swimming pools and 4 mini jacuzzis, a spa, a
library, cafés and almost anything else one could ask for!
MEXICAN MAGIC
We disembarked at Belize City and Conzumel, Mexico, where
we had really unique experiences. In Belize City, we went on a day
trip to Xunantunich – the Mayan temples – and were treated to a
typical Mexican lunch with margaritas. In Conzumel, we visited
a tequila factory and a rocky beach, and did a lot of shopping.
I am an RCI member and am glad that RCI is now providing
cruise options to its members. I recently went on the Night
Cruise to Asia, and as usual, it has been an excellent RCI
vacation! I am a regular cruiser and this is my 9th cruise. I have
always opted to go on a cruise vacation and have travelled most
parts of the world on cruise liners. I have always travelled with
my children and grandchildren, as a cruise gives you quality
time to bond with your family. When it comes to activities,
there are options available for all age groups, so irrespective of
your age, there is always something to look forward to.

A cruise is a perfect way to spend a honeymoon as it balances
free time and privacy, as well as couple-friendly activities.
I will forever be indebted to RCI for having affiliations to
most resorts, hotels and cruises, and making our dream
honeymoon possible.
A FLOATING LUXURY RESORT
The best part about a cruise is that you don’t have to worry
about anything, as every small detail is taken care of right from
the time you board the ship. In my opinion, it is a floating
luxury resort where you get to visit various countries without
worrying about changing flights, resort accommodation,
planning what to do in the evening or where to go for any
itineraries on exchange

ASTOUNDING
Set in the Himalayas in Uttarakhand,
Auli is a little spot of bliss that has
become one of the most important
ski destinations in India. RCI member
Padmini Nagachandra explores this
gorgeous destination.
STAY
Cliff Top Club
A luxurious ski resort, located in the Garhwal
Himalayas of the northern Indian state of
Uttarakhand. At more than 10,000 ft. above mean
sea level, Cliff Top is literally on top of the world,
being the second highest located resort in the world and
the only skiing resort in Asia which is located right on
the ski slope.

AULI
WEATHER REPORT
Summer: March – June
Very pleasant with moderate weather, and an average
temperature of 15°C. Ideal for sightseeing and skiing.
We reached the resort exhausted
from our long journey, wondering
what we had gotten ourselves
into. Walking into our room and
opening the balcony door changed
the way we felt within seconds.
A MEADOW, THE MOUNTAINS
AND A LITTLE LAMB
The resort arranged a guide to help us on the trek up to the
Gorson Meadows the next day. We had a light breakfast and
started our climb by 8.30am. Our guide was animated and
enthusiastic, constantly taking pictures of our struggle up the
path! Endless green stretched out boundlessly on one side and
the snow-capped Nanda Devi mountain range on the other.
Once we reached our destination, the view was spectacular and
we were able to spot the elusive Nanda Devi and Raja-Rani
peaks, and many others that our guide named. A herd of sheep
and a few pictures with a cute lamb later, we were speedily
returned to the Cliff Top Club, and the yummy parathas and
sabzi that were waiting for us.
We set out for Auli in early May, and decided to visit Haridwar
and Rishikesh on the way.
We reached the resort exhausted from our long journey,
wondering what we had gotten ourselves into. Walking into our
room and opening the balcony door changed the way we felt
within seconds. There, at what seemed like touching distance,
was the snow covered Nanda Devi mountain range. The sight
took our breath away and set the precedent to what turned out to
be the holiday of a lifetime.
Our first day was at Joshimath, the beautiful ashram established
by Sri Shankaracharya. We trudged up a few hundred feet to
see the kalpavriksh – a Mulberry tree more than 1,200 years old
– planted by Adi Shankaracharya himself, in the 8th century.
We visited other temples too and, after lunch, returned to the
resort feeling elated.
The next day, we started our journey pretty early in the morning
to Badrinath. After a good darshan and pooja, we were on
our way to Mana village, a gorgeous little village nestled in
the mountains.
We returned safe and sound feeling extremely fortunate that we
had experienced such undisturbed beauty, and vowing to go back
to Auli and the Cliff Top Club as soon as we could
Our drive to Auli was long-winding and often chilling, with
a view of the Alakananda river hundreds of feet below. After
a day’s drive, we reached Joshimath and from there, the IndoTibetian Border Force establishment in Auli, where a trekker
took us up the treacherously rain-washed slope, to the Cliff
Top Club.
Monsoon: July – October
Auli monsoons see scanty rains and a temperature drop to
about 12°C.
Winter: November – February
Chilly days with the average minimum temperature
touching 4°C. The minimum can go as low as -8°C, with
regular snowfall. These months are perfect for travellers
who want a permanent nip in the air!
Don’t miss out on
Skiing facilities and resorts were set up here by Garhwal
Mandal Vikas Nigam in order to promote Auli as a skiing
destination. The geo-morphological features with a vertical
drop of 500 mts and snow fields, are ideal for skiing.
Gurso Bugyal
Just 3 kms from Auli and at an altitude of 3065 mts, Gurso
is a huge meadow blessed with picture-perfect natural
beauty. Right in the middle is Chattrakund, a delightful
little lake that seems to have leapt right out of a fairytale.
Joshimath
Joshimath is located 16 kms from Auli. Don’t miss the
beautiful ancient temples dating back to the 8th century AD.
Chenab Lake
A rough road links this beautiful lake with Dang village
near Joshimath.

Paragliding Paradise
Himalayan
Solang Valley is 14 kms northwest of Manali, and is known
for its summer and winter sports. In Solang Valley, we had
the opportunity to do some paragliding, which was a thrilling
experience. One of the employees of the resort managed to fix us
up with a paragliding guide for a reasonable price. Once we were
up in the sky, it was unbelievable! Literally like being in heaven
and watching the world below. We saw the entire Himalayan
range of untouched mountains and valleys. We had our fill and
came back down to hot tea and aloo paranthas: the perfect finish
to our day!
MANALI
Once we were up in the sky, it was
unbelievable! Literally like being in
heaven and watching the world below.
Trout Treats
The food in Manali deserves a mention here. We had the most
succulent trout fish, in a variety of delicious preparations. We also
visited a trout farm, which introduced us to a totally different
form of fish breeding. Because of the extreme cold, few other
fish species can survive here. However, the climate is ideal for
breeding trout, and there are 81 trout farms in Himachal Pradesh,
including six that are run by the government. Trout farming in
these parts helps the locals raise their standard of living.
Manali was one of our most memorable holidays largely due to
the beautiful scenery, delicious food and warm staff at the Club
Mahindra Snowpeaks. We are grateful to RCI for making our
Himalayan holiday such a memorable one
Serene green forests, clusters of pine trees, misty skies: after
a 700 km drive from Delhi, Manali greeted us with this
breathtaking view. We eagerly looked forward to reaching our
destination – Club Mahindra Snowpeaks. It was a well-laid-out
establishment in the valley amidst majestic mountains, and the
view from the resort room was awesome. The dim lighting at
night added to its aura and made our experience that much more
magical. Our room had wooden floors, glass walls and beautiful
drapes. The staff was warm and friendly, and the interiors were
cosy and comfortable. Apart from organising our sightseeing
trips, the resort also organised discos, lunches, buffets, parties
and housie… something new and fun everyday!
stay
RCI has 5 resorts in Manali.
For more detailed info, visit www.rci.com
Weather Report
Winter: 7°C-10°C
Winters in Manali are extremely cold and grey. However,
the snowcapped peaks all around make for a stunning view.
Summer: 14°C-20°C
The summers are short – lasting between May and June –
and moderately cool. This is the best time to visit the valley.
Monsoon
The monsoons arrive in Manali by the end of June and
continue till the onset of autumn in August. The region is
adorned with every possible shade of green during this season.
The monsoons are also the trekking season in Manali.
DON’T MISS OUT ON
Ballooning
Tethered hot-air balloons offer impressive views of the valley.
Fishing
The rivers of the Kulu and Parvati Valleys are rich in
trout and mahseer. The season runs from March - June
and July - November, and rods and tackle can be hired
from agencies in Manali. Top spots include the upper
tributaries of the Beas and the Parvati Rivers at Kasol.
Mountain Biking
The steep slopes around Manali offer some prime country
for mountain biking. Agencies offer bikes for hire at
`100/500 per hour/day.
Mountaineering
Mountaineering training can be arranged through the
Directorate of Mountaineering & Allied Sports.
Named after the Hindu lawmaker
Manu, Manali certainly lays down
the law on what untouched
beauty should be like. RCI
member Shilpi Mathur steps inside
the painting that is Manali and
shares her experiences.
Rafting
White-water rafting trips on the Beas River can be
arranged at the small village of Pirdi, 3 kms downriver
from Kulu.
Rock Climbing
The cliffs at Solang, Aleo and Vashisht have a good range
of bolted and traditional climbing routes.
Skiing & Snowboarding
From January - March, the village of Solang Nullah
transforms into Himachal’s main ski and snowboarding
resort. Year-round skiing expeditions can be arranged for
around `2,000 per day.
Our trip involved visits to Rohtang Pass and Solang Valley,
where we had unforgettable experiences. The Rohtang Pass
connects Kulu Valley with the Lahaul and Spiti Valleys of
Himachal Pradesh. Here we hired horses, which took us up into
the cold mountains, and on the way back, we were fortunate
enough to witness the first snowfall of the season. Though it was
extremely cold, it was a memory we will never be able to erase
from our minds.
Zorbing
During summer, the ski slope at Solang Nullah is a
popular place for zorbing, which basically involves rolling
downhill inside a giant inflatable ball!

CORBETT
RCI member Keka Kohli reveals the aweinspiring story of Corbett National Park
and the man who inspired its mission:
to save the regal tiger and its cat-cousins.

stay
RCI has 5 resorts in Corbett.
For more detailed info, visit www.rci.com
When to visit
Corbett National Park remains open to
tourists from 15th November to 15th June. It
remains closed for the rest of the year primarily due to damage
caused to the roads, in the monsoon months. Repair work starts
after the monsoon and the roads are navigable only
by November.
Weather Report
Winter (September - March)
The days are clear and pleasant, and the nights are chilly.
A great time for bird watching and tiger sighting.
Summer (April - June)
Hot days with pleasant nights. The ideal time for sighting
animals, especially elephants and tigers.
Monsoon (July - August)
Humid days and nights. Great months for walks and treks,
good for observing abundant monsoon bursts of flora.
HOW TO GET THERE
Bus is the most convenient way to reach Corbett National
Park. Ramnagar is the town closest to Corbett National Park.
Ramnagar is well connected via road to Lucknow, Nainital,
Ranikhet, Haridwar, Dehradun and New Delhi.
Along with my two daughters and their families, I left for
Corbett National Park on 12th October 2011. Our rooms at
the Mahindra Safari Resort faced the river, and beyond it, an
uninterrupted stretch of forest and mountains. This magnificent
view seemed to remove all sense of fatigue from us, as we settled
into our comfortable rooms, enjoyed our wonderful dinner at
the riverside barbecue restaurant and prepared ourselves for the
enthralling story of Corbett that we would become a part of, over
the next few days.
Few wildlife conservation movements have captured the
imagination and attention of an entire nation, the way Corbett
National Park has. This wildlife reserve was established in
1936 and is India’s first national park. Originally called Hailey
National Park, it was renamed in 1957 after Jim Corbett, shortly
after his death.
Extending over 1,318 sqkms at the foothills of the Himalayas,
the park is home to about 160 tigers, making it perhaps the
largest and most important bastion of the tiger. In spite of this,
dwindling numbers and the shy nature of the cat make tiger
sightings a thing of chance. The best season to spot a tiger at
Corbett is April to mid-June, when the forest cover is low and
animals come out in search of watering holes.
Your wildest dreams come true
Whether or not the tiger deigns to visit, few wildlife enthusiasts

| 2012
will leave the reserve disappointed. Corbett National Park has
a variety of animal and birdlife in its grassland, sal forest and
river habitats, on the beautiful banks of the Ramganga River.
Elephants, sloth bears, langurs, rhesus macaques, peacocks,
schools of otter and several types of deer are a common sight in
the park. If you’re lucky you could also spot leopards, mugger
crocodiles, gharial, monitor lizards, wild boar and jackals.
Besides this magnificent congregation of wildlife, the Ramganga
Reservoir also attracts large numbers of migratory birds,
especially from mid-December to the end of March. Over 600
species of birds have been spotted here.
A bird’s-eye view
Dotted around the park are machaans or observation towers
overlooking the watering holes. This is a great way to stay out of
the animals’ way and take in a moment of their lives. Things you
should be sure to carry with you? Binoculars, water and plenty of
mosquito repellent!
The best part of our visit was the safari organised by the travel
desk at the resort. Although the shy predator did not oblige us, we
spotted lots of wildlife. The thick forest, trickling streams, slight
mist and the varieties of flora and fauna, enchanted all of us.
Mahindra Safari Resort offered us everything we could have
asked for, making our stay very memorable and comfortable.
Thank you, RCI!
Corbett National Park by air
Pantnagar airport is the nearest airport to Corbett National
Park. It is a domestic airport at a distance of nearly 50 kms
from Corbett National Park. The nearest international airport
is in New Delhi, which is about 260 kms away and is well
connected to most of the major foreign cities.
Corbett National Park by train
Ramnagar railway station is the nearest railhead which is about
60 kms away. The station is well connected to many major
cities in India.
DON’T MISS OUT ON
Garjia Temple
Located 14 kms from Ramnagar, the temple is a huge rock in
the middle of the Kosi River.
Jhirna
The Jhirna Rest House lies inside the southern premises of
Corbett National Park. The landscape is dry and the vegetation
consists of mostly scrub. Hills to the north of Jhirna are covered
with dense bamboo.
Jim Corbett: From hunter to shooter
The story of Jim Corbett is a fascinating one. He started off as
a hunter, tracking and shooting 19 tigers and 14 leopards – all
man-eaters. Corbett hunted alone and took great personal risks
to protect the lives of hundreds of terrified villagers.
