Onam the cultural and community festival celebrated in the month of
September. Even though it is a myth, it challenges and reminds the
purpose of Christian life. I have given some of the aspect below:
1.The life of ‘Mahabali’: Mahabali, the mythological king who
considered himself as a great Sacrifier.(Mahabali=Great Sacrifice).He
put his life for his unchanging word. It is very easy to connect it with
Christ. Jesus, the savior who also put His life to fulfill the word of God
and save the world

2.The life of ‘Pookkalam’: Pookkalam is an intricate and colorful
arrangement of flowers laid on the floors ,which starts 10 days before
Thiruonam. It symbolizes the beauty of unity in diversity of human life.
3. The life of Hope. The famous song recited during this celebration
“Kallavum illa chadivum illa…….”is the hope of the people where peace
,justice and love is maintained.
4.”Onavara Vela”-The mission aspect; In the long holidays ,the
Christians used this time to evangelize in the local community
.Christians find it as a very suitable time to spread gospel because the
local people can easily relate with Jesus –the greatest sacrifier as Paul
did in Aeropagus(Acts 17:22-27).

Our Nation is also celebrating the Labor Day on Sept 5 th, remembering
the great service of people who toiled for the development of the
nation. As the new academic year is starting for our children, I wish
them all the best in their studies and remind them to face the
challenges and happiness with great faith in Jesus Christ.

Greetings to the Families of the
Bethel Mar Thoma Church, Philadelphia:
YOUTH CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE – Sept. 2016
To the Families of the Bethel Mar Thoma Church, Philadelphia,
Greetings. I hope you had a blessed summer. Now we are
returning to another academic year; our children and youth are going
back to their schools and colleges. Many of the faithful are returning to
their workplace after summer vacation. As we return to our daily
schedule, I exhort you to pay greater attention to the spiritual matters, as
we often sideline them in the name of being “busy”. (“Set your minds on
things above, not on earthly things.” Colossians 3:2, NIV)
We live in a world of “busy-ness,” chaos and disorder. This
absence of proper order causes a disturbance in our life. The world has
become quite complicated. This becomes a challenge when we live a
simple faith in a complicated world. The public ministry of Jesus Christ
was simple, and so was the gospel message. But as Christians, when we
live in a complicated world, we are challenged to redefine our own
Christian identity in relation to the world, and are propelled to change
our strategy of witness to a more pragmatic, yet effective one.
“Therefore, we are ambassadors of Christ, God making His appeal
through us…” (2 Corinthians 5:20). Our presence in this world should
reflect our relationship with the Lord. We need to be cognizant of and
address issues and challenges we face, living as Christ’s witness, and
propose different approaches which will enhance our attitude towards
the Christian responsibility of representing Christ, as His witnesses in
this world. There needs to be a pragmatic approach, not just in theory.
Let us live our lives with simplicity aiming for the simple gospel of
Christ Jesus.
May the blessings of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit be
with you all.
