Militia 1812 ???? ROLL OF A COMPANY OF THE INDIANA MILITIA From September 11-November 24, 1811; Commanded by Captain John Norris, Commanding, (wounded in action November 7, 1811) ....... Thomas Clendenen, killed Nov. 7, 1811 (note some were KIA) Abram Kelley, killed Nov. 7, 1811. Henry Jones, killed Nov. 7, 1811 .......... Jacob Daily from Clark county IN (1820 Census) ........... George Hooke from Fleming county KY (KY 1810 census, Not in IN 1820 census) .......... Samuel McClung from Bourbon county KY (KY 1810 census, Not in IN 1820 census) ........... Samuel Neal Clark co. Indiana ? or Saml Neel Jefferson co. KY (1810 census) ( List from: Whig Rose Journal, Weblog of William Henry Harrison's GROUSELAND, The Soldiers at the Battle of Tippecanoe (Nov. 7, 1811) Source: Virginia Smith (Battle Ground Elementary School, Battle Ground, IN) http://web.archive.org/web/20041011181145/http://dagwood.wvec.k12.in.us/battle/spencer.html ) Here is a possible answer !!! He possibly never lived in Clark county Indiana or was there only temporarily! He was recruited from Jefferson county Kentucky! As most of the Militia commanded by Captain John Norris was recruited from Clark county so they possibly just listed all of them as being from Clark county Indiana in the 1812 militia listings. Clark county Indiana and Jefferson county Kentucky are adjacent on opposite sides of the Ohio River. But as shown above I found others of his Company in other counties of Kentucky per 1810 census. Here he is in the 1810 Jefferson county KY census. But what about the spelling ?? We already know that in the marriage certificate of our James Neal it was spelled Neel and Samuel was spelled "Saml" in Jefferson 1810 census 21 times, so it was very common. There are no other of name Neel/Neal/Neil/Neale in that 1810 Jefferson co. census and only one O'Neal, Joseph. Samuel Neel/Neal appears 3 times in Kentucky records in 1810, in Jefferson, Ohio, and Bourbon counties However, also found in the 1810 Jefferson county census are: BELL BELL BELL BELL JOHN JAMES PATRICK PATTERSON KY KY KY KY JEFFERSON JEFFERSON JEFFERSON JEFFERSON LOUISVILLE NO TWP LISTED NO TWP LISTED NO TWP LISTED 1810 1810 1810 1810 See last article below. So, it seems quite probable that they were traveling with the Bell clan. Note that Bell is a very common name and there are 21 John Bells of record in Kentucky in 1810. As you can see above Teresa Whelan has published a "Proof" that orphan Samuel Neal was Samuel Neil of Nicholas county West Virginia based just on the spelling of "Neil" in the last article above, but, recorded after that "1793, January, 15th--By Reb. Jno. Montgomery: Samuel Neal and Jane Graham;" from ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/augusta/court/2court39.txt Here is info on John Bell of Jefferson county KY which has no information to help us. Again, here is the Neal, James and Walker, Jenny (Jane) wedding record; Then James and Jenny (Jane) traveled to Knox county Indiana with the Walker clan !! Will we ever be able to find any more information ??? When I searched for Neal marriages in Jefferson county KY 1802-1850 here is all I found. WOW!! We were so lucky that the Neel, James and Walker, Jenny (Jane) marriage was recorded !! Did Saml Neel offspring move to Union county or to White co. Indiana? From mooseroots census data for Saml Neel: Saml Neel 1810 U.S. Census Not Stated, Jefferson County, Kentucky Saml Neel 1840 U.S. Census Not Stated, Union County, Kentucky NO, if correct born Tennessee 1802 ?? Samuel Neel Born: ~1793 in Kentucky (or Virginia??) 57 years old in the 1850 U.S. Census White county, White County, Indiana White Male 1793 being the year of the marriage of Samuel Neal and Jane Graham in Augusta co. VA and possibly the birth place of Kentucky could be an error ? The birth of the first two offspring in Ohio in ~1828 and ~ 1832 would indicate a migration path through Ohio and then to Indiana by 1837 ?? Wish we could find more information but so far that is all we have found ! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------APPENDIX F yDNA matches; So far no male of surname Neal has taken the yDNA test that matches closely with Willard (Bill) Neal and William (Bill) Neal. There is however one very close match to a Foley male, as shown below. Looking in Virginia in 1790 we see a large family of surname foley in Farquier county and a few scattered ones. This discovery triggered my looking at the Benjamin Neale family of Fauquier county, but so far no connection has been proven . If the Neal-Foley yDNA match is a true match and not a chance happening it appears there are two possiblilties. a) It is Neal family yDNA; Thus it appears possible that a Neal male impregnated a Foley Female and that Fauquier county Virginia was firdt thought to be possible location where this happened, or earlier in the family lineage. However, a surprising possibility has surfaced during internet searches !! Early Louisville was a rather wide open town and had a "Red Light District??". In one house with only women in resident there was an Ann Foley age 22 in the 1850 census !! Forty seven women ages 12 to 41 residing in the household of Mary A. Corseni. Is it possible that a descendant of Saml Neel as shown in the 1810 census, and possible brother to our James Neel, visited this house and its resident Ann Foley and the result was the offspring Michael Foley born circa 1854 ?? We have yet to find any definite information about this possible descendant of Saml Neel, but there are a number of possibilities listed in the book "Kentucky Deaths and Burials, 1843-1970" which can be searched through FamilySearch.org, they are: Jillotson Neel (or Tillotson) b. 1813 d. 7 Oct 1888 Tillotson married 21 Mar 1843 Coleman Neel b. 1830 d. 31 May 1880 James W. Neel burial 24 Apr 1868 Thomas Neel/Neal burial 24 Dec 1865 per 1850 census born 1820 Ireland? Neal burial 28 Oct 1891 Richard Neal burial 2 May 1860 L. E. Neal MorF? burial 13 July 1872 Of course being buried in Louisville does not necessarily mean they were born and died in Jefferson county, they could have moved into the county at some time after their birth !! Samuel Neal, the orphan, being born in 1771, would be age 49 in 1820, 59 in 1830, 69 in 1840 and 79 in 1850. Obviously there is yet NO way of knowing how long he lived or even for sure that he had offspring !! The earliest burial listed above is in 1860. Samuel Neal, the orphan, having married in 1793, it would appear the first possible offspring would be born in Virginia in 1794, thus possibly being age 66 in 1860. b) It is Foley family yDNA; Then possibly a male Foley impregnated a Neal female. Since William James Foley Jr. knows little about his family tree and can identify ancestors only back to 1854 it appears this incident could have happened almost any time before his birth. Here is hoping that in the near future some other Neal/ Neel male takes the yDNA test and matches closely with the two Bill Neals to aid us in our research !! Below is a copy of the Neal-O'Neal project yDNA results as of 8/19/2015, as one page, views best at 300x or 400x. Our family is R1b1a2 - Family P Note #154690 of Family B, descendant of Benjamin Neale b. 1760 d. 1853. At one time we thought it possible that our James Neal could be a descendant of a Benjamin Neale born about 1720 from Faquier VA. This result makes it seem improbable. Unless not all of the Neale family from Farquier VA are of the same DNA. ------------------------------------------------------------- Family Tree DNA - Neal-O'Neal DNA Project Neal-O'Neal DNA Project - Y-DNA Classic Chart For genealogy within the most recent fifteen generations, STR markers help define paternal lineages. Y-DNA STR markers change (mutate) often enough that most men who share the same STR results also share a recent paternal lineage. This page displays Y-Chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) STR results for the project. It uses the classic format. The columns display each project member's kit number, paternal ancestry information according to project settings, the paternal tree branch (haplogroup), and actual STR marker results. The color coding of STR marker names is explained here. In the haplogroups column, haplogroups in green are confirmed by SNP testing. Haplogroups in red are predicted.
