2015 Comm. Report - West Seattle Food Bank
COMMUNITY REPORT
FISCAL YEAR JULY 1, 2014 – JUNE 30, 2015
MISSION STATEMENT
OUR MISSION:
West Seattle Food Bank is committed to providing food security and community
connections to our neighbors in need.
OUR VISION:
We envision a strong and connected community in which all people have access to
safe and nutritious food and the essential necessities of living.
OUR VALUES:
Compassion & Respect – recognizing the inherent dignity of each client
Collaboration & Cooperation – engaging and involving a network of community
members
Education & Prevention – striving to understand, eliminate and prevent the root causes
of hunger
Stewardship & Sustainability – being responsible stewards of our resources
“I went from having a job to being homeless and losing my
relationship within a 6 month period. I mean things went fast and
when things happen fast you need to react fast and finding resources
and food at the WSFB has helped me restart my life again. This is
not just a food bank, this is a staple in the community. This is a
Rock of Gibraltar for the West Seattle community if not Seattle.” –
Michael, client
LETTER
FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Dear Friends,
We are very grateful to the many in this community
that have partnered with the West Seattle Food Bank
to help struggling families we serve access important
basic needs. There are many ways that your support is
making a difference. Here are a few of the 2014/2015
fiscal year highlights:
• Our Backpack Program distributed 4,034 weekend
packs of food to students at risk of hunger. This is a
71% increase over last year.
• We have started a distribution at a facility working with individuals
transitioning from homelessness and plan to start distributions at larger home
delivery sites in the coming year. This means that individuals with serious or
chronic medical conditions have access to a greater selection and quantity of food
that better meets their dietary needs.
• The Bookcase Program distributed over 14,000 books, received a grant to
distribute new books in our monthly toddler bags, and coordinated with the
library on our first Romp and Read event which engages parents and toddlers in
activities that encourage reading at a young age.
• Over 1.4 thousand pounds of food was distributed to 8,553 individuals.
• Community members received food and other supplies 108,452 times over
the year.
The Board, staff and volunteers of West Seattle Food Bank are committed
to finding better ways to ensure that everyone in this community has access to
enough safe and healthy food to maintain a healthy diet. Thank you for all you
do to partner in this important work.
Sincerely,
Fran Yeatts
Executive Director
FOOD PROGRAMS
FOOD BANK DISTRIBUTION:
Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday volunteers
arrive to help set up our distribution line and dispense
food. We use your donations to purchase protein,
dairy, and fresh produce to supplement the many
food donations we receive. Thirty six percent of the
individuals we serve are children and thirteen percent
are seniors. We don’t forget their pets. The Humane
Society, several local pet stores and individuals donate
food to help those important companions stay healthy.
HOME DELIVERY & OFF-SITE DISTRIBUTION
Thursday distribution set up
Last year a total of 8,094 bags of groceries were
delivered to the homebound, disabled, elderly and
those not able to access food distribution at our facility.
We are embarking on a new method of delivery so we
can better meet the dietary needs of the individuals
we serve through this program. In May we started an
off-site distribution at a location that serves individuals
transitioning from homelessness. Our hope in 2015 is
to expand this service to other locations and bring a
selection of food to the people who need it most, our
elderly and disabled neighbors.

BACKPACK PROGRAM
Our Backpack Program provides school children
at risk of hunger with six meals to ensure they have
nutritious food over the weekend. During the 2014/15
school year we distributed 121 weekly packs through
five West Seattle schools. For the 2015/16 school year
we have expanded to over 200 packs weekly through
seven schools.

PROGRAMS
BOOKCASE PROGRAM
Reading, games, puppets and singing were part of
the first ever Read & Romp Party put on by Nathalie
Gelms, Librarian at the High Point Library, and our
fabulous Bookcase Program volunteers. The Bookcase
Program has grown tremendously this past year,
distributing over 14,000 donated adult and children’s
books. A grant from FirstBook.org allowed toddlers to
receive a new book each month.
Read & Romp Party
BABY & CHILD CORNER
$250,000 worth of formula, baby food, diapers, car
seats, strollers, toys, furniture, clothes and other needed
accessories were distributed to parents of infants and
toddlers in need. We are grateful to WestSide Baby
and the many other donors that support this program.
This year the Baby & Child Corner was the beneficiary
of a donation of shelving as Boy Scout Troop 284’s
Centennial Project. We want to thank Walter F Toth
Construction for assisting the Boy Scouts in the
building and installing of this much needed project.
The new shelves in the Baby Corner were so
needed – Thank you Troop 284!
COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS:
Providing community connections to support
families is an important part of our mission. Last
year, Within Reach helped clients register for SNAP
benefits, First Student recruited and hired bus drivers
for employment, a public health nutritionist provided
weekly cooking demonstrations and information to
promote healthy eating habits, the Seattle public library
signed up adults and youth with cards, Walgreens
provided free flu shots, and families were assisted with
information and access to enroll in medical insurance
programs. These are only a few of the many resources
that have been provided for families to access.

FOOD FACTS
WHERE DOES OUR FOOD COME FROM?
THANK YOU TO OUR
FOOD PARTNERS!
14%
Individuals, employees & customers of businesses
& grocery stores, parents & children of West Seattle
Schools and congregations of churches all have
something very special in common; they go out of their
way to help their West Seattle neighbors in need. Those
food drives and individual donations brought in 86,327
lbs. of diverse food to offer the families we serve.
Our partners at Food Lifeline and Northwest Harvest
provided 476,155 lbs. of food through their distribution
centers. Local grocery stores and retail outlets provided
650,996 lbs. of produce, dairy, meat, bread, pastries and
other much appreciated items. Last year we distributed
1.4 million lbs. of food and the 14% we purchased is a
very important part of our nutritious mix.
We are so very grateful to the individuals, businesses
and organizations that have supported our work
through financial or food donations. Individuals
received food 108,452 times last year and we want to
pass on their appreciation for your support.

INSTRUMENTS OF CHANGE
Over 200 guests joined us on Friday evening, May
1st at our new location at The Seattle Design Center for
our 8th Annual Instruments of Change Dinner/Auction.
This extremely fun event featured a hosted Happy Hour
where guests enjoyed tossing a ring in the Wine Toss,
taking silly pictures in the Photo Booth, tasting some
fabulous bourbon and bidding on unique Silent Auction
items.
After a delicious dinner, provided by Tuxedo and
Tennis Shoes, guests viewed “What It Takes” (you
can view it on the Home Page of our website at www.
WestSeattleFoodBank.org), a heartwarming film
produced pro-bono by Huskinson Productions. Guests
generously raised their paddles for those in the West
Seattle community in need of a little help. Then, of
course, the evening ending with delicious desserts from
our Dessert Dash!
A very heart felt thank you to our major sponsor
Jackson, Morgan & Hunt, PLLC and all of our other
generous sponsors, donors and guests, for helping us
raise $122,000. A special thanks to those that donated
their time, talent and products: Christopher Chan from
Seattle & Oregon Wine Awards; Joyce Glavich and
CHI Franciscan Health for printing everything; Avalon
Glassworks & Flower Lab for our centerpieces; Debra
Warren for Graphic Design; Torrin Record-Sands for
taking all the pictures and The Bridge for the Specialty
Drinks. They are all definitely instruments of positive
change!
OPEN HOUSE
June 25th the West Seattle Food Bank held a very
successful collaborative Open House with The West
Seattle Helpline in conjunction with The West Seattle
Chamber of Commerce After Hours. 100 guests took
tours and learned about the programs that our agencies
provide to assist those in our West Seattle community
who are in need of a little help. We had a delicious
olive oil and balsamic vinegar tasting by 11 Olives,
appetizers were donated by Pecado Bueno and all wine
was donated by our generous partners Seattle & Oregon
Wine Awards.
