WELCOME
Thank you so much for your support of the DC Shorts Film Festival 2006. Now in our third year,
we have become one of the fastest growing film festivals in the nation — showcasing 94 short films,
including 24 from the burgeoning DC film community, and an incredible 48 from first-time directors.
Many have asked us: How do you pick films? It isn’t easy. All films are reviewed by a panel of judges
who then score each entry on content, style, originality and technical ability. Scores and analysis are
entered into our online database, and at a final meeting, decisions are made — often with much heated
discussion.
In 2006, we selected films from more than 500 entries from 18 countries in all genres: dramas,
comedies, experimental films, documentaries, and those that cross boundaries.
We are proud that DC Shorts turns the spotlight on truly independent short films, created by new
and established filmmakers in an era of digital video and home computers — an era where the art of
filmmaking is open to all. So with that in mind, sit back in the comfortable Comcast Theater, relax, munch on some popcorn,
and enjoy the screenings. And plan on staying when the lights come up — the filmmaker Q&A session is
important for you as an audience to understand the process, and for the filmmaker to hear feedback.

Opening Night Party: Thursday, September 14 at 9:00 pm at Drinx. (Verizon Center, 601 F St., NW)
Everyone who has a ticket to any festival screening is invited to our Opening Night Party. Walk the
red carpet along with our filmmakers, and get mauled by the paparazzi. We’ll ply you with free Stella
Artois Beer, clips from the festival films will be projected on the walls, and you can dance to live music from
the Omega Band.
Filmmaker Brunch: Sunday, September 17 at 11:00 am at Clyde’s of Gallery Place (707 7th St., NW)
The Filmmaker Brunch is open to All-Access Festival Passholders, Housing Hosts and Filmmakers. We’ll serve a fabulous brunch, and announce the winners of our five trophies and audience winners.
LunaFest Reception: Thursday, September 21 at 9:00 pm at the Landmark E Street Cinema
The LunaFest Reception is a celebration of women filmmakers, open to all LunaFest ticket holders
and All-Access Passholders. We’ll be serving wine and a fabulous selection of artisinal cheeses from
Cowgirl Creamery.

This year, DC Shorts will present five major awards, and 10 audience favorite certificates. Your
completed ballot will be used to determine the audience favorite winners (keep the coupons for a spiffy
meal). Each award comes with a $250 check, a hand-crafted trophy designed by the Washington Glass
School, and other goodies.

Community Building
DC Shorts is consistently a favorite festival among filmmakers. Why? Because DC Shorts is
committed to bringing filmmakers together to learn from one another, make contacts, and encourage
new collaborations.
Here’s how we do it: DC Shorts offers selected filmmakers housing, meals, city tours, and passes to
all events at no cost. The filmmakers gather in the GEICO Filmmaker Lounge to watch films together. In
addition, we are one of the only festivals in the world to provide written feedback to every film entered—
whether or not it gets selected. We are proud of our reputation for being respectful, responsive, and well
organized.
The DC Film Alliance
The DC Shorts Film Festival is sponsored by the DC Film Alliance, a non-profit organization that
serves and strengthens the media arts in the greater Washington DC region by bringing together
filmmakers and the public to participate in diverse film, video, television, and multimedia programs.
Through our monthly meetings, annual film festival, workshops, and other events, the DC Film
Alliance aims to: encourage collaboration through peer groups, networking, and opportunities to
show works in progress; develop and disseminate the most complete listings of resources available;
create a bridge between media artists and community groups; assist filmmakers and videographers
just breaking into the industry; create additional opportunities for professional film and video artists;
raise the status of the short film format; unite and strengthen the DC-area media arts community;
and enhance DC’s national arts reputation.
In the upcoming year, we will offer the following programs:
• DC Film Salon: free monthly meetings for area filmmakers
• Stonehenge: a “massive” casting session bringing together local filmmakers and actors
• DC Shorts Film Festival
• ReelFind: A new web portal of resources for the DC film and video community
