WHY VISIT
The Golf
There are eight 18-hole Championship golf courses and
three 9-hole courses dotted around the island, all offering
world-class courses to play on.
Beaches
The Romance
Mauritius may be small but each of its coasts has its own
personality. The west is the calmest, with little of Mauritius’s
famous wind. Venture south for hidden, rocky coves or east
if windsurfing is your thing. All beaches are public so you can
easily hop from one inviting stretch to the next. Blue Bay is
a protected marine park with first-rate snorkelling; Trou aux
Biches is picture-postcard perfect; Mont Choisy in the north
is a long, curving bay backed with casuarina trees; while
lively Flic-en-Flac, with its beachfront bars, is a great spot for
sundowners. There isn’t a bad beach on the island.
For the third consecutive year Mauritius has been prized best
honeymoon destination award at the World Travel Awards
2014.
Mauritius was voted the World’s Leading Honeymoon
Destination.
Swim with dolphins
Swimming with dolphins is an incredibly moving experience.
Playful dolphins can be found just off the West Coast of
Mauritius.
They can often be seen in the morning and in the late
afternoon.
The people
The Scenery
Mauritius hits all the marks as a tropical paradise with
coral reefs (the world’s third largest), white sand beaches,
dramatic green mountain scenery, sugar plantations and
extinct volcanoes. The south of the island is often acclaimed
as the ‘authentic’ Mauritius as it is more rural and wild.
MAURI T I US I S LA ND / IL E M AU R IC E
Mauritius is a friendly, ethnic melting pot of diverse heritage.
Indians, Tamils, Marathis, Muslims, Creole and Chinese
live in harmony. Franco and Anglo-Mauritians reflecting
Mauritius’ former colonial ties with France, Britain, Holland
and Portugal. English, French and Creole are the main
languages. Mauritius sets high standards of tolerance and
cultural plurality. Mauritius is an example to the world.
MAURITIUS
History
There are some fascinating chapters of Mauritius’s past to
explore.
The Food
A Green Landscape
Mauritius’s unique cultural mix finds its ultimate expression
in the island’s cuisine. Ask for a typical local dish and you will
get curry, stir-fry, wild boar, barbecues or even a traditional
afternoon tea. You can dine to Michelin-star standard at the
resorts or nibble your way around street food stalls around
the island; stop off at a roadside kiosk for tamarind-spiced
pineapple and dholl-puris or have a lobster dinner cooked by
a celebrity chef. Whatever you choose, you won’t go hungry.
Cleared of non-native plants and animals, it was returned
to its original wild state, where the Kestrel and Pink Pigeon
flourish along with giant tortoises. Mauritius offer extensive
tourist facilities and many places of interest.
Adventure
Bored of the sunlounger? Head inland to go ziplining, quad
biking and hiking through the rainforest, or canyoning in the
waterfalls. Or take to the water – every kind of ocean-based
sport is available.
The Shopping
Cultures
The Sega is usually sung in Creole (mother tongue of
Mauritians).
the traditional instruments such as the
“Ravanne”, “Triangle”, the “Maravanne” and the traditional
guitar are used.
Mauritius has multiple duty free outlets around the island
and is acclaimed for its low prices. Photographic equipment,
watches, cellular phones, paintings, antiques, sunglasses,
leatherwear, jewels, and engravings are all duty free. Also,

(Rivers, waterfalls, deer, monkeys, wild boars and birds hide

sanctuaries in the island. It provides an unhoped-for safe
haven to a great variety of indigenous species, many of
which are rare or threatened. La Vallée de Ferney is not
only a reference among eco-tourism sites but, above all, a
200-hectare reserve where ambitious projects to restore the
flora and fauna of Mauritius are being conducted. Exploring
La Vallée de Ferney means more than just to take a ramble;
it provides an unforgettable experience in a unique place,
where the pleasures of hiking are associated with environment
protection. Furthermore by visiting La Vallée de Ferney, you
are actively contributing to the preservation of the biodiversity
of Mauritius, one of the most threatened in the world.

conversion of basaltic lava to clay minerals. It is a relatively
small area of sand dunes comprising sand of seven distinct
colours (red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow).
