In 1991, Kathryn Bigelow directed the now iconic action-thriller of the same name, imbuing the once unknown moniker with new meaning. The term became synonymous with fast-paced, high-adrenaline action and the thrill seekers were eloquently defined by noted film critic Roger Ebert: “They aren’t men of action, but men of thought who choose action as a way of expressing their beliefs.” Starring Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze and Gary Busey in pivotal roles, the film grossed $83 million worldwide and went on to become a cult classic, even inspiring a live stage version called Point Break Live! PVR MOVIES FIRST MOVIE OF THE MONTH Almost 15 years later, cinematographer Ericson Core returns to the director’s chair to helm the remake of the 90’s classic showcasing daredevil athleticism in a way that suggests condensed highlights from ESPN. The Plot: A young FBI agent, Johnny Utah (Luke Bracey), infiltrates a cunning team of thrill-seeking elite athletes, led by the charismatic Bodhi (Edgar he first ‘Point Break’ was amazing, inspiring. We all loved it and were influenced by it. We wanted to use that inspiration to bring our own vision of ‘Point Break’ to the screen, expanding it on a global scale, with today’s most extreme, world-class athletes driving the action. - Ericson Core, Director PAGE 7 Ramirez). Deep undercover and with his life in danger, Utah strives to prove these athletes are the architects of the mind-boggling crimes that are devastating the world’s financial markets. lengths to which Utah must go to take them down will push him further into untested terrains. Filmed on four continents, North America, Europe, South America and Asia, “Point Break” presents extraordinary feats performed by the world’s top extreme sports athletes, and involves some of the most daring exploits ever committed to film. Extreme sports featured include snowboarding, wingsuit flying, free rock climbing, high-speed motocross and surfing 70-foot waves. VISUAL APPEAL Core’s lensing, enhanced by outstanding visual effects fully taps into the cinematic potential of dynamic sports such as base jumping, sheer-face snowboarding, wingsuit flying, free climbing and big-wave surfing. Aerial shots of the characters floating between the canyons in their wingsuits are sheer visual poetry, while the scene in which Bodhi and Utah hang off a practically vertical cliff by their fingers is a milestone in novelty as well as composition. UPGRADE ON THE ORIGINAL Director Ericson Core and the filmmaking team understood that a big part of what made the original “Point Break” so compelling was the relationship between its two strong-willed leads: the rookie FBI agent Johnny Utah, trying to shake his demons and find his place in the world and his elusive quarry Bodhi, a charismatic force of nature with an unusual agenda. This pivotal conflict Between the two individuals who appear diametrically opposed but are oddly simpatico remains the core of the story. Additionally, Core states, “Many of the philosophic questions Bodhi raises merit deeper exploration, like the idea of being truly free and living by your own code, so we kept all of that alive.” What’s radically different in the remake is the canvas on which Utah and Bodhi’s conflict plays out amidst the larger drama. The crimes that Bodhi and his gang commit are more sophisticated and dangerous now, with far-reaching motives and implications, and the PVR MOVIES FIRST Critique reception “Director Ericson Core has poured his expertise into devising jaw-dropping stunts and visualizing awesome natural wonders.” – Maggie Lee, Variety “Wisely leaning on its stellar visuals, slick action sequences, shooting locations and respectable 3D conversion, Point Break makes for a thrilling ride.” – Elizabeth Kerr, The Hollywood Reporter PAGE 8 TRIVIA 01 The production relied on a variety of different digital cameras in order to depict extreme sports in new and innovative ways, including Go-Pros, the RED camera and an Opticom. 02 Some of the world’s best athletes have worked on this film, including wing suit athlete Jeb Corliss, legendary surfers Laird Hamilton and Sebastian Zietz and pro skateboarder Bob Burnquist. 03 The athletes themselves were equipped with cameras that, in combination with helicopter mounts and strategically placed close-up lenses, will take audiences immediately into the controlled chaos of what it’s like to be riding that edge. 04 While shooting second unit footage at the Jaws surf break in Maui, the crew was fortunate enough to catch one of the largest wave breaks of the last decade, being ridden by the world’s top big wave surfers. 05 The film includes a sequence shot at Venezuela’s legendary Angel Falls. A platform, approximately the size of a football field was built just beneath the summit of the falls with the crew setting up camp on the ground making it look like a “full-scale military operation.” 06 Bojesse Christopher who plays the FBI director was in the 1991 version of “Point Break” as well. He played Grommet, one of the surfer/bank robbers, the one who wore the LBJ mask. PVR MOVIES FIRST PAGE 9 7 Stunning Action Movies Starring Women Total Recall Every once in a while Hollywood tosses up heroine-centric action flicks. Let’s rewind to the grittiest of them. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) a speeding car as Stuntman Mike crashes into it in his own death-proof vehicle. Kill Bill Vol 1 (2003) Cast: Angelina Jolie, Jon Voight Director: Simon West Robert Ebert called it “a real popcorn movie.” Angelina Jolie plays a videogame-like action heroine who takes on a bunch of assassins that have broken into her mansion. The film features stunts never attempted before then by a woman. Jolie trained three months to do a jaw-dropping bungee-jumping sequence. The huge box office run craved a reboot, and it’s already underway! Death Proof (2007) Cast: Uma Thurman, David Carradine, Lucy Liu Director: Quentin Tarantino Quentin Tarantino’s first installment of the Kill Bill franchise catapulted the female-action genre into serious reckoning. Uma Thurman plays ‘The Bride,’ a badass character set for revenge, with no mercy for those who have wronged her. The Kill Bill series features a number of graphic, gutwrenching battles with characters played by Lucy Liu and Vivicia Fox, but with a cold-faced Uma Thurman portraying the vengeance-seeking protagonist, it makes the fight sequences that much more thrilling! Terminator 2 : Judgment Day (1991) Cast: Kurt Russell, Zoe Bell, Rosario Dawson Director: Quentin Tarantino A misogynist stuntman called Mike (Kurt Russell) takes women on a drive in his “death proof” car, escaping scratch-free while they meet a gory end. The movie gears into action when these women, including real life stunt artist Zoe Bell, take over as action heroines pummelling Kurt. Zoe Bell was Uma Thurman’s double in “Kill Bill”, which elevates the level of stunts by several notches. Watch out for the final car chase, where Bell hangs on to the hood of PVR MOVIES FIRST Cast: Linda Hamilton, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Edward Furlong Director: James Cameron The movie is widely touted as the best Terminator movie, and the reason is undoubtedly Sarah Connor! No woman, man or machine would ever mess with Linda’s Hamilton freewheeling performance as the legendary “Sarah Connor” who would destroy anyone or anything that dared to mess PAGE 10 with her son John. She is a warrior woman; chiselled, militant. She sports camo gear and even cooler shades. Resident Evil : Apocalypse (2004) Cast: Milla Jovovich, Sienna Guillory, Oded Fehr Director: Alexander Witt of a science action film was unheard of. Weaver earned an Oscar nomination for the role, but more than anything, Ellen Ripley became an iconic character in cinema. Ridley Scott’s Alien features a highly aggressive extraterrestrial baddie, and Ripley is one of the few smart and savvy enough to survive it. This is Milla Jovovich’s second appearance in the franchise, and she is still battling off zombies who are overtaking Racoon City. Her character Alice stands as one of the most iconic till date, based on many of the strong women in the Resident Evil video games. She is a smart leader, killer fighter and an expert at handling a variety of arms and weapons. She sprints down buildings, has helicopters trying to mow her down, kills zombies, showcases her martial arts expertise and more. Phew! Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) HAPPY BIRTHDAY Mel Gibson Rugged and romantic, Mel Gibson is one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Cast: Zhang Ziyi, Michelle Yeoh, Chow Yun-fat Director: Ang Lee Martial arts choreography at its finest. The artistry of the fight sequences here are award-winning (won four Oscars off 10 nominations). Michelle Yeoh and Ziyi Zhang performed combative moves that were usually reserved for the guys. The battle in the desert, where the girls suspend themselves in mid-air as they kick their surrounding enemies in the face is heart-stopping. Alien Franchise (Since 1979) Cast: Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn, Bill Paxton Director: James Cameron James Cameron’s “Alien” franchise is where “Ripley” really certified her presence as a feminine badass. When the first Alien was released in 1979, putting a female as the lead PVR MOVIES FIRST Here are 5 fun facts about the actor, who shares his January 3 birthday with racing driver Michael Schumacher, and Lord of the Rings writer J.R.R. Neil Nitin Mukesh, who plays the villain in Wazir, tells us about the movie and his role in it. What attracted you to Wazir? Two things: it is a brilliant script, executed by a brilliant team. Take an engaging story, and breathe life into it by pulling together stalwarts such as Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Rajkumar Hirani, Abhijat Joshi, Bejoy Nambiar, Amitabh Bachchan, Farhan Akhtar...and you have Wazir. You’ve worked with Bejoy Nambiar before... Yes, I worked with him in David, and his technical brilliance left a deep impact on me. I knew Wazir would make magic in his hands. What makes Wazir worth waiting for? It’s a movie that echoes reality and essentially, it’s about ordinary people caught in extraordinary situations. It happens all the time around us, which is why you will be hooked from the first move itself. There is immense suspense, but at the same time, you will see a lot of action. And there is a strong love story, too. PVR MOVIES FIRST GUEST INTERVIEW What’s the chess analogy we see in the trailers? Yes, the film has a running allusion to the game of chess, which requires you to play complex mind games. In many ways, that is how our lives play out, too. And in chess, when you lose a piece, you retaliate by trying to take your opponent’s piece. So in this film, you will see moves and countermoves that will have you inching closer to the edge of your seat. Tell us about your role in the film Well, the title, Wazir, is named after my character. It is a compact but pivotal role, and once you see the movie, you will know why an actor would want to take it up. It is perhaps the darkest character I have essayed so far. I cannot reveal more about my role without giving the plot away. A memorable moment... The first time I walked on to the set and met Amitabh Bachchan. I’ve admired him for decades now, and one of the key reasons I signed Wazir was for a chance to work with the icon. To be on the same set as him left me awestruck. But he smiled and said, “Your beard; is it real?” I replied, “Yes, Sir.” And with that, the ice was broken. It was a very special moment for me. PAGE 20 THE LIFE OF A LEGEND: James Cameron ARCHITECTS OF CINEMA PVR MOVIES FIRST PAGE 21 James Cameron James Cameron has created some of the 20th century’s biggest blockbusters. Often asteroid-sized in their scale and ambition, his unique brand of cinema is virtually unmatched across the planet. Cameron’s most noted work, 1997’s Titanic, became the first film to earn more than $1 billion and landed 14 Academy Award nominations. Early Life: Films fascinated Cameron from an early age. As a child, he would grab his father’s Super 8 camera and shoot films with it. It was actually during a biology class in high school that Cameron wrote a short story, which would later become the movie, The Abyss. After graduating in Physics from California State University, he took up a job as a truck driver to support his early screenwriting efforts. Then one day in 1977, he watched Star Wars: Episode IV-A New Hope, and he knew the time had come to pursue his dreams. He quit his job, and headed to Hollywood. His Films: Terminator. Titanic. Avatar. James Cameron’s films show you what dreams are made of. His heroines are often tough as steel. PVR MOVIES FIRST ARCHITECTS OF CINEMA Cameron got his big break in 1981 when Italian producer Assonitis hired him to direct Piranha II: The Spawning. The low-budget, shoddy production led to bitter fights between them and a stressedout Cameron had a nightmare about an invisible robot hit man sent from the future to assassinate Assonitis. It is this nightmare that bloomed into the film that would catapult his career and launch Arnold Schwarzenegger: The Terminator (1984). Nominated for 14 Academy Awards, the tragic love story Titanic swept 11; including Best Director, Best Picture, Best Art Direction, and Best Original Song (“My Heart Will Go On”) DID YOU KNOW? At school, Cameron wrote sci-fi stories and fantasized a lot instead of completing his homework. He and his friends once made a diving vessel to send mice to the bottom of the Niagara River. PAGE 22 Bet You Didn’t Know: • While editing Titanic (1997), Cameron had a razor blade taped to the side of the editing computer with the instructions written underneath: “Use only if film sucks!” first sequel will be filmed partly underwater, using submarine motion capture technology. The iconic director has also indicated he might quit Hollywood and become a citizen of New Zealand, where he owns land worth millions of dollars. • Wrote a screenplay for Spider-Man (2002), which was turned down by the studios because it was “too violent.” Sam Raimi’s version was greenlighted instead. • Cameron is left-handed. He drew the picture of Rose (Kate Winslet) in Titanic (1997). The image was flipped so it would appear that Jack (Leonardo diCaprio) was drawing it with his right hand. • Cameron is vegan and only drinks decaffeinated coffee, despite working long hours. Avatar, often billed a “rhapsody in blue” was nominated for nine Oscars, and won four. It also fetched Cameron Best Director at the Golden Globe Awards. Cameron’s Cinema: Cameron’s lush, vivid visuals suck viewers into the storyline. A die-hard sci-fi lover, he takes you to near-impossible locations, setting new standards for filming under water and above sky. Larger-than-life heroes and tough-as-steel heroines complete the picture. Up Next: Cameron is writing his next three Avatar films, to be shot in New Zealand with a reported $400 million budget all-in. He has hinted that the new movies may be considerably darker than Avatar. The suspense film was shot in the story-book town of Santa Rosa, California—a place with middle class American values, touched by evil. One of Hitchcock’s first American films, it features many of the elements that would define his future style: his obligatory cameo, black humour and the way he would shoot and frame staircases to make them story devices. This was also perhaps the first film to star a teenage heroine pitted against a psychotic killer. 3 MORE THIS MONTH 72 YEARS AGO The Plot: The Newton family lead a quiet life in Santa Rosa, California. Their eldest daughter, ‘young Charlie,’ decides that things need brightening up and contacts her Uncle Charlie, inviting him to stay. But Uncle Charlie hides a dark secret—he is under suspicion of being “The Merry Widow Murderer,” who has strangled several rich East coast widows to death. Soon, the girl smells a rat and a dangerous cat and mouse begins between uncle and niece. Iconic Scene: The famous “faded, fat, greedy women” monologue that Joseph Cotten icily delivers at dinner one night—finishing with a deeply chilling gaze straight into the camera.
