N ESPAK made its debut in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) by setting up a joint venture with the Ar-Riyadh Development Authority in 1978. The Company established its Regional Office in Riyadh in 1982. Initially, NESPAK acquired in the energy sector in the KSA, but later the Company was awarded projects in the sectors related to the fields of Environmental & Public Health Engineering, Highways, Architecture & Planning, Water Resources and Dam Engineering, Oil & Gas, Industrial, Airports and Ports & Harbours. NESPAK has been providing services for 28 projects in the Environmental & Public Health Engineering Sector, 27 projects in the Energy Sector, 22 projects in Highways Sector and 19 projects in the Architecture and Planning Sector. NESPAK is associated with two Saudi companies in terms of business acquisition and the provision of consultancy services in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. NESPAK joined hands with the Saudi Consulting Services (SAUDCONSULT) in 1986 by working on the project titled “Sedimentation Control Project for Jazan Dam Reservoir” as lead firm. The two companies carried out 34 projects together. NESPAK started working with the M.H. Aitah Consulting Engineers' Office in 1997 as local partner and both the companies jointly completed almost 40 projects. To date, NESPAK has secured 115 projects worth US$ 21 billion out of which 22 projects are in operation. The ongoing projects are being handled by the NESPAK Regional Office and 22 site offices scattered all over the Kingdom. The total strength of NESPAK staff in the KSA stands at 179 including nationals from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Syria, Egypt and Sudan. Generator step-up transformer of the Tabouk Power Plant No. 2 Extension Project Tabouk Power Plant No. 2 Extension Project Units 9, 10 & 11 (Stage V) Project Status: Completed in 2009 Scope of Services: Design Review, Construction Supervision Project Cost: US$ 114 million Client: Saudi Electricity CompanyWestern Operating Area, Saudi Arabia GTG Units Nos. 9, 10 & 11 of the Tabouk Power Plant No. 2 Extension Project NESPAK reviewed the design and undertook the supervision of this project which included the supply, installation and testing & commissioning of three simple cycle gas turbines of 60 MW each, stateof-the-art Mark VI gas turbine control system, fuel unloading station, two fuel storage tanks, fuel treatment plant and the extension of 132 kV GIS substation. The client issued a “Letter of Special Thanks and Appreciation” to NESPAK for completing the project ahead of the contractual schedule. 30 OVERSEAS PROFILE Turbine Blocks A1 & B1 and tank area of the Riyadh Power Plant No. 10 Riyadh Power Plant No. 10 Project Status: Ongoing Scope of Services: Design Review, Construction Supervision Project Cost: US$ 3 billion Client: Saudi Electricity Company-Central Operating Area, Saudi Arabia The Riyadh Power Plant No.10 Project consists of 40 gas turbine generator units each 7EA Frame with 56 MW guaranteed output from General Electric, USA. The project covers an area of approximately 6 Sq km in the southeast of Riyadh City. Detailed NESPAK scope of services includes the monitoring of engineering design, supervision of structures and civil works and training on equipment for all the 40 gas turbines. Wadi Dawasir Power Plant Extension Project Project Status: Ongoing Scope of Services: Construction Supervision Project Cost: US$ 165 million Client: SAUDCONSULT This 120 MW power project consists of two gas turbines and related balance of plant equipment, gas treatment plant, plant management system, fire detection, alarm & protection system, plant safety & security system and communication system. The project is progressing well. This two-phase project is aimed at meeting the growing electricity needs of Makkah Al-Mukarramah and Madinah Al-Munawwarah Regions. AI-Majmah & AI-Shaqrah Water Supply Project Madinah Al-Munawwarah Water Supply Master Plan Project Status: Completed in 1990 Scope of Services: Feasibility Study, Detailed Design, Tender Documents Project Cost: US$ 95 million Client: Water & Sewerage Board, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia Project Status: Completed in 1995 Scope of Services: Project Planning Project Cost: US$ 1427 million Client: Madinah Al-Munawwarah Region, Water & Sanitary Drainage Authority, Saudi Arabia The NESPAK-SAUDCONSULT joint venture was hired for study and design to supply blended water to Al-Majmah and Al-Shaqrah storage tanks and to connect them with the Water Distribution Network. This project was aimed at providing 20,000 cu. m/day of water to Al-Majmah and 300,000 cu. m/day to Al-Shaqrah. This project study involved the review and updating of 1982 Master Plan for Madinah Al-Munawwarah City. The review was necessitated due to the expansion of the Holy City and the Prophet's (Peace be upon him) Mosque. The plan was prepared to meet water requirements up to the year 2039. The project involved the construction of water storages, blending stations and pipelines for these two fast growing cities near Riyadh. Desalinated water was proposed to be blended with the groundwater, increasing the water supply to the two cities. Storage/balancing reservoirs, booster pump stations and adequate pipe sizes (up to 2000 mm dia) were proposed after analysing the existing water supply network. Eastern Province Water Supply System Phase I & II Project Status: Completed in 1995 Scope of Services: Project Planning, Detailed Design, Tender Documents, Construction Supervision Project Cost: US $ 209 million Client: Saline Water Conservation Corporation, Saudi Arabia This project comprised the construction of a 53 km long 1524 mm dia steel pipe and a pump station including all civil, architectural, mechanical and electrical works. The pipeline originated from the Jubail Desalination Plant located on the Coast of Arabian Gulf and was aimed at supplying 278,000 cu. m/day product water to the King Fahd International Airport and the towns of Rahima, Safwa, Sayhat and Qatif, all located in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. The product water was supplied from the product water header of the existing water storage tanks of the Jubail Desalination Plant. Earlier, blending stations of Rahima, Safwa, Sayhat and Qatif received product water from the Al-Khobar Desalination Plant through two feeders. The pumping plant was located within the boundary of Jubail Desalination Plant and was planned to contain eight pumping units, four of which were installed under this project. KINGDOM OF Saudi Arabia 33 Dammam Wastewater Reuse Project Project Status: Completed in 1995 Scope of Services: Master Planning, Detailed Design, Tender Documents Project Cost: US$ 37 million Client: SAUDCONSULT This project comprised a study for the reuse of the treated wastewater and monitoring the application of treated effluent to agriculture, horticulture, groundwater recharge of the depleting aquifers and sand dunes stabilisation in arid zones. The project also involved the design of 1500 mm dia, 150 km long transmission pipeline to pump the treated effluent. Buraidah & Unaizah Water Distribution Network Project Status: Completed in 2001 Scope of Services: Project Planning Project Cost: US$ 953 million Client: Qaseem Region Water & Sanitary Drainage Authority, Saudi Arabia, SAUDCONSULT NESPAK was engaged for studying and planning water supply systems comprising wells, booster pump stations, treatment plants, reservoirs and distribution networks in Buraidah and Unaizah cities. The scope of work included study of the existing systems to update record, identify difficulties and deficiencies in the systems and prepare preliminary design for the improvement and extension of the systems. The project also included the preparation of O&M manual for different components of the existing system. 34 OVERSEAS PROFILE Roads and sanitary network overlaid on Spin-2 image for Al-Andulus District for the Jeddah Sanitary Drainage Master Plan Jeddah Sanitary Drainage Master Plan Project Status: Completed in 2003 Scope of Services: Master Planning, Detailed Design, Tender Documents Project Cost: US$ 4 billion Client: Makkah Al-Mukarramah Region Water & Sanitary Drainage Authority, SAUDCONSULT The NESPAK-SAUDCONSULT joint venture was engaged for the Jeddah Sanitary Drainage Master Plan project covering 105,000 hectares of land. The plan was necessitated to meet the increasing water requirements of the Jeddah City. The project involved the evaluation and upgradation proposals for the existing sewerage system, large diametre sewers and tunnels ranging from 400 mm to 2500 mm DI pipes. The project was implemented in phases according to the requirements of the city. Existing and proposed sewerage systems were developed on the GIS platform which facilitated the execution of various spatial analyses and queries. The project was aimed at supplying 100,000 m3/day of water to Buraidah City from the Riyadh-Qaseem Water Transmission System. The proposed structure involved a 1,422 mm dia, 136 km long steel pipeline, pump station, interconnection for Abqaiq city and interconnections with the existing facilities at the Hofuf Terminal. Ductile Iron Pipeline DN 600 mm laid for the Sabya Water Project Sabya Potable Water Network Project (Phase-I) Project Status: Completed in 2008 Scope of Services: Construction Supervision Project Cost: US$ 4.43 million Client: Ministry of Water & Electricity, Saudi Arabia This project comprised the construction of four 14,000M3 groundwater tanks, main pumping station, chlorination room, generator room, electrical and mechanical works, instrumentation control system for operation, laying of 26.6 km long DI/UPVC water distribution network ranging from DN 110 mm to DN 600 mm and house connections. Water Transmission Project from Khulais and Rabigh Dams to Jeddah Plant components constructed at the Khulais Dam for water transmission project Project Status: Ongoing Scope of Services: Design Review, Construction Supervision Project Cost: US$ 113 million Client: Ministry of Water & Electricity, Saudi Arabia NESPAK in association with M.H. Aitah is handling this project aiming to supply 140,000 cu. m/day treated surface water from Khulais and Rabigh Dams to Jeddah and Makkah cities. The construction of the project has been planned in three phases. The first phase, which is being implemented, includes the construction of a 40,000 cu. m/day Water Treatment Plant along with other related structures at the Khulais Dam and the laying of 43 km long Ductile Iron (DI) water transmission main of DN 1200/700 mm up to the junction point on the MakkahMadinah Road. The project involved the laying of 31 km long RCC pipes ranging from 500 mm to 1200 mm dia in the project area. The 1,000 ha. study area, located in the Qaseem Province, is a closed catchment. A number of small hill torrents drained into Qusayba Depression from the catchment area, causing salinity which damaged the crop land. The main purpose of the project was to improve agriculture through the provision of proper drainage and checking of runoff into the Qusayba Depression. The feasibility report proposed a scheme for reducing the inflow into the Qusayba Depression through the construction of three water conservation structures, two pump stations, 8.75 km long flood channels and provision of 26.5 km long sub-surface and 17 km long surface drains for the removal of saline effluent.. The project also comprised the construction of 375 RCC manholes, 590 RCC street catch basins, laying of 6.5 km uPVC pipeline of 300 mm dia for the interconnection of catch basins to manholes and three RCC outfall structures at Wadis. 38 OVERSEAS PROFILE A beautiful view of the Jazan Dam Sedimentation Control Project for Jazan Dam Reservoir Project Status: Completed in 1987 Scope of Services: Feasibility Study, Detailed Design, Tender Documents Project Cost: US$ 3 million Client: Ministry of Agriculture & Water, Saudi Arabia The 40m high Jazan Dam with a total storage capacity of 71 mcm was constructed in 1970 at the confluence of five tributaries in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Yemen Arab Republic. Out of total catchment of 1233 sq km, about 58% is in Yemen. Over the time, sediments had accumulated in the reservoir, causing depletion of storage capacity. The studies involved a comprehensive reservoir survey, soil classification of catchment in the Kingdom, appraisal of existing hydromet network and recommendations for improvement & evaluation of instruments embedded in the body of dam, identification of locations and survey for sediment trap structures, watershed management, dredging of deposited sediment and raising of the dam. The Jazan Dam Reservoir The hydromet network was reviewed and recommendations made for the establishment of two more stations with rain recording gauges, upgrading of station at Aridah and the establishment of two stream gauging stations in Wadi Jazan and Wadi Mishrif. NESPAK was engaged for rendering consultancy services for the "Construction of Balghazi Road" in AI-Ga'a, Wadi Gussy, AI-Sharha, Mashereen, Reea areas and miscellaneous farm-to-market roads in the Jazan Region. These two-lane roads are located in a hard terrain between Khyber and Al-Hayet cities. 40 OVERSEAS PROFILE The project included a 200-metre long bridge and 276 km long link roads scattered around the Jazan Region. Madain Saleh Airport Project Project Status: Completed in 2006 Scope of Services: Master Planning, Detailed Design, Tender Documents Project Cost: US$ 41 million Client: Zuhair Fayez Partnership, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia This airport project included the construction of runway, taxiway, apron, CAT-l airfield lighting system and other airside infrastructure. In addition to the consultancy services, NESPAK provided specialist input regarding the special systems for this project. The airport is capable of handling Boeing 747-400 aircraft. Located at the Zubaida Bin Jaffar Street off King Fahd Road in Al-Washm area, this five-storey building was constructed on a total ground area of 6,000 sqm. The covered area of the building comprising a basement, ground and five floors is 18,200 sqm. The Pension Directorate building is flanked by the buildings of Technical Training Institute -- Training centre for Architects and King Abdul Aziz Historical Centre -- National Museum of Saudi Arabia. NESPAK scope of work included architectural and engineering design, Bill of Quantities, engineer's cost estimate and contract documents. The Pension Directorate houses various offices to facilitate the retired Saudi nationals by handling their post-retirement problems.
