The final newsletter for the year will come out May 5th.
3rd Quarter Honor Rolls are attached to the end of this newsletter.
4th Quarter Progress Reports went home with students yesterday, April 13th
Attention 8th grade Parents
There are copies of two very important documents attached to the end of this newsletter.
One explains the expectations and requirements for students to attend all 8th grade
advancement activities. Your students should have brought this form home before spring
break. If you have not seen this form, please print, read and sign it. Return this form to school
as soon as possible.
The second form has information about location, times, and dress code for the advancement
dance, as well as, the advancement ceremonies. There is also a permission slip portion that, if
signed, will allow you to take your 8th grade student home directly after their advancement
ceremonies. If this is not signed, your student will have to stay until the end of the school day.
Sports Physicals
Here’s a heads up for next year. We have scheduled dates for students to obtain FREE sports
physicals. Both events will be held at Gililland, but are for all students. Saturday, August 6th,
physicals will be offered from 12:00pm – 4:00pm. Saturday, August 20th, they will be offered
from 8:00am – 12:00pm. Please put these dates on your calendar for future planning. Flyers
with information about these events will be available in late April or early May.
Two of this year’s finalists for the Diablos Excellence in Education Awards were from Connolly.
High Impact Award Finalist
Ariel Roller - ASPIRE Academy at Connolly
Inspiration Award Finalist
Lisa Jones - ASPIRE Academy at Connolly
Congratulations!!
Tempe History Museum Writing Contest
The Tempe History Museum sponsored a writing contest for fourth through
eighth grade students this year. There were 62 entries. A committee read,
scored, and selected the winners. For the 6th – 8th grade Category, the
winner was Connolly’s own Isabel Warriner from ASPIRE Academy. As first
place winner for her age
group, she will receive a
$25 gift card to Changing
Hands Bookstore and a trophy. The first and
second place winners were announced at
the Tempe History Museum on Saturday,
April 9th, and the winners read their essays.
Connolly’s Veronica Malanche Recognized for Selfless Acts of Kindness
Local elderly couple Joe and Ann Motlok received
unexpected generosity from Veronica Malanche
after she knocked on their door one day by
accident and, after noticing their need for
assistance, immediately offered to help them in
any way that she could. “She was a godsend,” said
the Motlok’s daughter Patti Dent. “Veronica was
a great help in getting them to doctor
appointments, going grocery shopping for them,
and even cooking dinner.” She never accepted
any money. After three months of assistance, which blossomed into friendship, the Motloks
decided to “pay it forward” by writing to CBS 5 News and nominating Malanche for a gift of
$500. CBS 5 News reporter Jason Barry visited Connolly on Monday, March 28th where Dent
awarded the gift to Malanche. To watch Malanche’s reaction to the surprise, visit the CBS 5
Pay It Forward website. Malanche has been working at the Tempe Elementary School District
for 15 years and is currently an Instructional Assistant at Connolly working primarily with
special needs students. Malanche exhibits great kindness and patience to which her students
respond positively. She enjoys her career because she loves working with each of her students
and watching them grow. “She has a heart of gold,” said Connolly Office Manager Gerrie
Sferra. “It makes sense that she would be recognized for something like this.”
Tempe Athletic Conference Coaches of the Year
The Tempe Athletic Conference (TAC) is pleased to announce that several Connolly coaches
received a distinguished Coach of the Season Award.
Ruth Sharpe received both the JV Girls Volleyball Coach
of the Season award and the JV Girls Softball Coach of
the Season award.
Brittany Messer won the Coach of the Season for
Varsity Girls’ Softball.
Greta Olsen won her Coach of the Season award for
her Spiritline team.
Andrew Waltz won his Coach of the
Season award for the Coed Soccer
team.

Varsity Girls’ Basketball
By Coach Pruitt
Varsity girls’ basketball ended with a
nail-biting victory over Gililland. At the
end of the 4th quarter we were down by
4 points with less than 20 seconds on
the clock. The girls looked defeated, but
I reminded them that it wasn't over until
it was over. Two awesome shots later,
we were tied at the buzzer. Both teams
frantically tried to outscore the other in
the 3 - minute overtime period.
Miraculously, we got a few fast break lay
ups and some much needed free
throws. We won by two points, a single shot. The girls were
ecstatic, but also humbled. They
noticed that the other team was
visibly upset with many players
crying. We cheered for Gililland in
our final team huddle. It was a
great game. Connolly 8th grade
girls’ basketball team has won the
championship two years in a row. I
hope they continue this streak. All
of the girls showed great determination. This was an amazing end to a stellar, undefeated
season.
Booster Club
With the end of the year approaching quickly, there are many activities planned for students
that require financial support from the Booster Club. Please help the Booster Club by donating

the Connolly Booster Club). All donations can be given to the office or your student’s
homeroom teacher. For more information, call the Booster Club president or send us an
email. [email protected] or Sarah Hartman @ 480-510-2734
The Booster Club needs YOUR help! We are looking for a 2016-2017 Booster Club President,
Vice President, Treasurer/Acting Secretary and Secretary. If you are interested please contact

Connolly’s Baseball Team
By Jesse Sanchez
This year’s Connolly Baseball
Team won every game – an
undefeated season. We
practiced hard and it paid
off! We also won the Tempe
District Championship. It
was a satisfying feat and it
will be a fantastic memory
for all of us.
All City Athletic Conference (ACAC) Champions
By Connie Devenport
ACAC Girls’ Basketball had a great season with a record of 3 – 0. The girls played hard in the
championship game against Fees and won in double overtime. Coach Taylor and Coach
Harmony did an amazing job leading the team to the City Championship. Well done girls!
NJHS – National Junior Honor Society
Students in NJHS collected plastic wrappers and thin
wrapping material that cannot normally be recycled
through recycling machines. During their March
meeting, students donated the plastic to the Tempe
Recycling Alliance. Several hundred pounds were collected. A
responsible act by NJHS students helped to keep our environment
clean. In addition, the plastic collected is used to
create benches, planters, and many other useful
things. Thanks to all who participated.
Please note: NJHS will be visiting ASU’s Barrett Honors
College on Wednesday, April 27th. Permission slips
were sent home at our
March meeting. Forms
were due April 1st. Please
see Ms. Olsen or Mrs.
Roller with any questions.
Stargazing Event
Connolly students and families
enjoyed an evening filled with
events. Students in ASPIRE and
AVID promoted activities in their
classrooms. The Connolly choir
performed too. Content
departments facilitated games
such as asteroid dodge ball,
shoot the moon, space bingo,
and math probability. The
Arizona Science Center and
Pacific
Scientific
were on campus along with the Challenger Center with a liquid nitrogen
demonstration. Connolly’s Student Council sold moon pies and Astro Hot
Dogs were a big hit. Keeping the mood fun, many students and parents
danced to the music of the D.J. The highlight of the evening was
checking out the planetarium and the telescopes for nighttime sky
viewing.
Mrs. Cadman’s sixth grade AVID
students designed and
implemented a game for
participants.
Nothing is better than a great game of
asteroid dodge ball.
Mrs. Dorn working with students on math
probability.
Mr. Mahoney’s choir students performing
during the Stargazing Event.
Mrs. Small and Ms. Richards calling out space
bingo questions.

Bullying Unit with Detective Baggs
Over the course of six weeks, all of Mrs. Cadman’s classes had
the opportunity to learn about bullying. They were informed
of the resources available here at CMS and strategies to use to
address bullying. One teaching strategy used was role-playing.
Students were given a bullying scenario and they used their
knowledge to create a skit that combats bullying in a positive
light. We also had the opportunity to create anti-bullying
posters. Three posters were chosen by the district and will be
laminated and featured!
Living in Two Worlds Program
As the school year comes to an end, so does the Living in Two Worlds Program sponsored by
Mrs. Cadman. This program was designed for our Native American youth to help them abstain
from drugs and alcohol through lessons taught by Freddie Johnson from the Phoenix Indian
Center. The students learned a game called the Navajo Strong Game that taught team building
and patience using winter stories told by Mr. Johnson. The program ended with a pizza party
and students left with tools to say no to drugs and alcohol.

Dear Parents and 8th Grade Students,
The end of the 2015-2016 school year is fast approaching. End of the year activities for 8th graders are a privilege and
honor to attend. As a result, the administration and 8th grade faculty have established promotion, or “advancement”,
criteria for attendance, academics, and behavior.
In order to be eligible to attend the 8 th grade dance and the end of the year field trip, all 8 th grade students must
maintain at least a “D” average in every class (including P.E., Music, and Electives) by May 6, 2016.
In addition to the maintenance of at least a “D” average in every class, students are expected to continue to use good
judgment and follow established school and district rules. In order for education to be effective, good behavior is as
important as academic achievement and school attendance. Beginning March 14, 2016, and continuing until the final
day of school, any student who is truant, (ditching), will not be permitted to attend the end of the year field trip and
advancement dance. Any student who receives one or more out-of-school suspensions (OSS) or three or more in-school
