A SMALL ACT tells the story of two very unlikely philanthropists whose modest acts of charity shine a light on
the incredible power of giving—no matter how small the gift. Chris Mburu was a child living in a village in Kenya
when he first received a $15 scholarship from a Swedish woman named Hilde Back. Her humble but steady
sponsorship put Chris through school and eventually launched him into Harvard Law, paving the way to his job as
a United Nations attorney. Now in her eighties, Hilde meets Chris for the first time as he launches his own small
act of benevolence: the Hilde Back Education Fund for the children of his village. Hilde's astonishment at the
potency of her long-ago gift is matched in scale by Chris’ surprising discovery that Hilde is not Swedish at all, but a
German Jew who escaped the Holocaust.
Exploring the enduring challenges of achieving an education in the developing world, A SMALL ACT goes on to
follow Kimani, Ruth and Caroline— each at the top of their class at Mukubu primary—who are pinning their
hopes on winning one of Chris’s scholarships. Interweaving their stories with those of Hilde and Chris, A SMALL
ACT reveals just how powerful a gesture of kindness and generosity can be, and that an education is perhaps the
most generous gift of all.
This fall, A SMALL ACT launches a nationwide screening campaign, challenging churches,
synagogues, college and high school students, and non-profits across the country to host public
screenings of the film in their own communities...and to ask how their own tiny acts of generosity
and kindness might create surprisingly vast change.
Each of us has the ability to create change. Each of us has the power to do something small. As seen in the film,
one small act can ripple out to affect countless lives. This screening will be followed by a discussion of activities
that our community members can become involved with as their small act.
Club Motto – “We live not to ourselves alone; our work is life.”

President’s Post
Welcome Back! It’s the same salutation, but it’s coming from a new voice. Officially I am already six
months into my first term of office, but this is the first addition of the Signpost to be published since I
took over as president back in May.
Once again it’s been a busy summer at the Club. Our rental business is booming and the Club was
booked almost every weekend. The grounds have never looked better. All of our plantings have
survived the heat and lack of rain. We received an unsolicited but very fortuitous donation of mulch and
a professional tweaking by a bride’s father who just happened to be in the landscaping business.
The calendar for the year is filling up quickly and October is chock full with something for everyone to
get involved in. Community Service starts out the month with a Blood Drive on October 4th followed by
the monthly meeting October 5th , sponsored by the Literature Department. Please try to join us for a
seasonal luncheon catered by Rebecca Johns. For those who don’t have time for lunch, the business
meeting and programs start around 1:00. The program features a presentation by Margot Sage-El,
owner of Watchung Booksellers who will share with us all the latest literary trends and upcoming
publications.
My mission as president is to make the Women’s Club an even more vital part of this community. We’ve
been working hard to make the clubhouse absolutely beautiful and the programs a reflection of the
membership’s interests. If you are a new member and have an idea for any type of new program, please
don’t be shy about suggesting it. If you’ve been a member for a while and haven’t been to the Club
lately, why not? I would love to hear from you! E-mails welcomed. Every Department is looking to
welcome new committee members. Now, more than ever, there are so many ways to get involved!

A Crafters Get-Together - Refreshments will be Served
Needles, hooks, pins. beads, paper, ribbon...what is your favorite crafting tool? Whatever it is, there is a place for
you at the Crafters Get-Together on Wednesday, October 20th. The Home & Garden Department is sponsoring
two sessions for anyone, of any skill, who loves to participate in any craft.
Are you a knitter? Quilter? Jewelry maker? Like to break a plate or two for a mosaic project? Do you scrapbook,
needlepoint, embroider, or make home decorations? These sessions are planned to bring like-minded people
together. All you have to do is come, and bring along whatever project you are working on. And if you like,
samples of other crafts you enjoy doing. Beginner, intermediate, expert, it doesn't matter. We know our club
members have a wide range of interests and talents. We will relax, unwind, work on our projects, share ideas, help
each other, learn something new, and enjoy a little social time together.
We’ll start with this one day but who knows what will happen? If there is enough interest, the crafters could be
getting together on a regular basis! Questions - contact Susan Griffith

Wrapping It Up for the Holidays with Parcel - Refreshments will be Served
Are you a domestic goddess who is all thumbs when it comes to gift wrap? When magazines such as Martha
Stewart and Real Simple need a gift wrap guru, they turn to Glen Ridge resident Nancy Laboz. Now you can learn
Nancy's tricks and create packages as unique and whimsical as those featured at her Montclair shop, Parcel.
Nancy will be teaching us all how to wrap the perfect present, and then demonstrating a few of her own
professional tricks such as using charming found trinkets from home to make a gift stand out and creating
personalized gift tags. Members will pick up great ideas just in time for the holidays. This event is timed to coincide
with the publication of Parcel's most recent article on gift wrapping, which will appear in the special holiday issue of
Women's Day. For those who would like a sneak peak of our evening's event, the issue will be available in late
September. Of course, you can also stop by the shop at 559 Bloomfield Avenue or check out Parcel's website at
www.shopparcel.com.

Time for Tots will take place at the Club every other Thursday throughout the year from 9:30–
11:00 AM. Feel free to stop in for a quick coffee, or stay the whole time. Parents and care-givers are
welcome and we gather in the lower level of the Clubhouse. It’s a great way to meet up with new and old
friends…for both adults and kids! There is no charge for members, and we ask non-members to make a $5
donation per family.
If you have any questions about upcoming activities or are interested in being a part of the Children’s
Department, please feel free to contact Anne Brown.
Technology Update
Good news -- over the summer we installed wireless internet access throughout the clubhouse. That means the next
time you are there with your laptop or smartphone such as an iPhone, Droid or Blackberry, you can connect to the
internet from everywhere except the upstairs kitchen. That also means that Department Chairs can now offer internet
access to guest speakers that would like to incorporate real time information into their presentations and talks. In
order to access the network, stop in the office and Suzanne will give you a copy of the password.
Over the summer we also created a Facebook page to be able to send out reminders of upcoming events. You can
find the page by typing in Glen Ridge Women’s Club. Yes, I know it’s not our official name, but when people are
searching for us on Google, it is what they type in 98% of the time. So in this case, if we want to be found, we need
to compromise a bit. Please visit the page and LIKE us. We promise not to inundate you with updates, rather the
purpose is to send out gentle reminders 1-2 days before an event in case you had been considering joining us. It’s
also where we will be posting pictures and videos from events after they occur. For example right now you can view
the pictures from the Girls’ Night Out event and Bands For a Better World videos.
We also want to remind everyone to routinely visit our website: www.womensclubglenridge.com for detailed
information on upcoming events and to purchase tickets to events via Paypal (using your credit card). Click on the
MEMBERS PAGE button on the HOME page to see a full list of upcoming events for the current month. Another
great feature on the website is the CALENDAR button on the Members’s Page. Clicking on this will take you to our
Google Calendar which will show you the our entire year’s planned events and meetings such as Board meetings,
Girls’ Club meetings, book group meetings, time for tots meetings etc.

Religions and Spirituality Monthly Meeting and Open House
Tuesday, November 2nd

Program begins at 1:00PM
Understanding the Passion Play
We are looking forward to having local travel arranger Richard Pohli speak at the new
Religions and Spirituality program on November 2. Joining him will be Cathy Gritman,
Betsy Prothero and Kathleen Gaffney. They will discuss the philosophy behind the Passion
Play of Oberammergau to help us have a better understanding of this and other Passion
Plays performed around the world. There will be a powerpoint presentation with
discussion and an opportunity to ask questions. This historical event, which takes place
every ten years, is an incredible production which is nothing short of a miracle.
Oberammergau, in a valley of the Bavarian Alps, is close to the border of Austria and
Switzerland and provides beautiful scenery, with charming little villages, castles and
lakes.
Join us on Election Day, (vote first!) Tuesday, November 2nd , for lunch at 12 noon.
Enjoy some German style food and wine. The program will start at 1pm.
The luncheon cost is $13 for members, and $16 for your guests.
Non members attending the program only will be charged $5 at the door. No charge for
members attending the program only. Purchase your tickets online at

programs.

Girls’ Club Corner
Submitted by Emily Wright
The Girls’ Club of Glen Ridge has hit the ground running for the 2010-2011 school year, with a
new set of officers and representatives very eager to start the year. The Girls’ club officers this year are:
President, Cara Mulligan, Vice President, Keira Fitzgerald, Recording Secretary, Emilie Deleers,
Corresponding Secretary, Emily Wright and Treasurer, Sarah Malone. After seeing how much is involved
in running the Girls’ Club, two new executive positions have been added. Our new Technology Specialist,
Kathleen Casey, is in charge of updating and working on the Girls’ Club website that was created last
year. The website has important Club updates as well as points earned by members. Our second new
position, Historian, will be filled byAnna Esposito. She will be in charge of taking all photos at events
and meetings throughout the year. Since our Club has grown so much, we have decided to add an extra
representative for each grade. Our representatives this year are Juniors Sarah Harris, Kathlyn Monahan,
Erika Sliwak and Emily Trojanowski and Sophomores Katie Cullinan, Liza Howland, Samantha Nicles
and Rebecca Sliwak.
Before the new school year had even started, the girls helped the community. On June 27th the
Girls’ Club volunteered at the Glen Ridge Community Fund Run. Girls’ Club members were helping out
at every stage of the race from helping with registration, manning a water station in the middle of the race,
and finally passing out water and towels to the runners as they finished. The race was a great success.
Members are excited to assist in future community events.
The Club’s first general membership meeting will be held on Monday, September 20th. The
Club will also hold its Freshman Reception on Sunday, September 12th. Here the incoming freshmen and
their parents can talk to the current officers and representatives about the Girls’ Club and get excited
about becoming a member.
SAVE THE DATE! Our fifth annual maniCURE Night will be held Friday, October 15th
from 6:30 pm to 8:30pm at the Women’s Club. On this night the girls will set up stations to paint nails
pink. There will also be different fun stations where girls can play games, make treats and win prizes. The
proceeds from this event will be donated to The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The Club is
very happy to be hosting this event again and hope to have a big turnout.
The 2010-2011 Girls’ Club is looking forward to starting the year and continuing to help the
community in as many ways as possible.

MUSIC AND MORE 2010-2011 SEASON
Classical Composition from the Garden State
featuring Beth Levin, piano and Brett Deubner, viola.
Sunday, October 24, 5pm in the Georgian Room
Following in the wake of the tremendous success of last year’s inaugural Music and More Concert Series, the Women’s Club
will once again present a program of five concerts for the enjoyment of the membership and the community.
The second season of “Music and More” continues the kind of innovative and excitingly fresh programming that the
community expects. Artistic Director and Glen Ridge resident, Brett Deubner serves up a smorgasbord of world premieres
for viola and piano, two delightful education concerts for children and their parents, as well as playing host to two
internationally renowned chamber groups.
The opening concert on October 24th will feature the highly anticipated return of celebrated virtuoso pianist Beth Levin as
she teams up with violist Brett Deubner in a program dedicated to three New Jersey composers; Roger Stubblefield, Stanley
Grill and Glen Ridge resident Amanda Harberg. The concert opens with Grill’s “Civil War Songs” inspired by the
documentary on our nation’s Civil War, this composition features variations on “Ashokan Farewell” and “The Battle Hymn of
the Republic.” Glen Ridger, Harberg’s solo work for viola, written especially for this occasion, follows and the concert’s grand
finale is the world premiere of Roger Stubblefield’s “Portraits for Viola and Piano.”
Later in the season Halcyon Trio and Brooklyn Baroque perform concerts as well as a concert centered on story telling
through music with narrator and musicians from the Grammy award-winning New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. The final
concert features a fun jazzy crossover performance featuring jazz and classical musicians coming together for an evening of
fun musical celebration!
The Music and More Series is a wonderful way for us to use our beautiful space for the cultural enrichment of our community.
While the series is hosted by the Club, expenses for the performers are covered by private donations and revenue from ticket
sales. General Admission is $20. Students, Seniors and Women’s Club members enjoy a special price of $10.
Series sponsors making a donation of $250 or more will receive two free admissions to each of the 5 concerts. If you wish to
support the series in this manner, you are encouraged to drop off or send your check to the Club. Please make checks
payable to “Women’s Club of Glen Ridge” and include “M&M series” on the notation line on your check. Donations of any
size are welcome.
We look forward to seeing you on Sunday, October 24 at 5pm.
