It charts the course for teaching and learning across the division with the focus on ensuring that every student is challenged and supported to reach his or her full potential. The five year strategic framework includes four goals – high academic expectations, multiple pathways, social-emotional development, and culture of growth and excellence – and multiple strategies to guide this work. This booster vaccine can provide continued protection from pertussis illness (whooping cough), and is typically given after your child turns 10 years of age. The Tdap vaccine may be obtained from the following health care providers: a) private physician or pediatrician, b) military clinics, or c) the Virginia Beach Public Health Department at 4452 Corporation Lane. Vaccines required for school attendance are free for all children at the Virginia Beach Public Health Department (5182700). For more information on the immunization clinics offered by the Virginia Beach Department of Public Health, please view this document: http://www.vbschools.com/health/content /pdfs/ImmunizationClinics.pdf. 3 HEALTH NOTES: LIFE THREATENING ALLERGIES Life threatening allergy management in school requires a team effort from the student, parent/guardian, healthcare provider, school nurse and school staff. As a result, the risk of severe allergy reactions in the school setting can be reduced, and a safer educational environment can be provided for students with life-threatening allergies. For more information, please read the school division’s plan for Management of Life Threatening Allergies Guidelines: http://www.vbschools.com/health/content /pdfs/LifeThreateningAllergiesHandbook.p df REPORTING STUDENT ABSENCES Student absences and late arrivals should be reported daily. Please call 648-3200 and use Option 3 to report absences or late arrivals. Please leave the following information: student name, teacher name, state whether the student will be absent or tardy, and reason for absence or late arrival. For the 2015-2016 school year, Ocean Lakes Elementary is implementing a Word of the Week (WOW word). Vocabulary is important to all of our students as they read and write every day. Each week, on the morning announcements, we will highlight a vocabulary word. The students will also work on the WOW word in class. The focus will be on the part of speech, definition, writing the word in a sentence, and learning synonyms and antonyms. You can help at home! Ask your child about the Word of the Week! PARENT SURF REPORT OCEAN LAKES ES | Issue #3 Information for Rising 6th Graders For Corporate Landing Middle School… January 14, 2016 Please join us at Corporate Landing Middle School for Rising 6th Grade Information Night. All parents and rising 6th grade students are invited. The event will take place from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM. There will be great information provided about 6th grade curriculum options and how parents and students can prepare for a successful transition to middle school. January 22, 2016 All rising 6th grade registration forms are due to Corporate Landing MS. March 25, 2016 All AVID applications are due to Madeline Day, the elementary guidance counselor. What is AVID? AVID (Advanced Cia Individual Determination) is a research-proven, college-readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll and persist in four-year colleges or universities. Although AVID Secondary serves all students school-wide, it focuses on students in the academic middle who enroll in the AVID Elective course in grades 6 through 12. AVID Elective and core teachers, counselors, principals, college tutors, and parents raise expectations of students and, with the AVID support system in place, students will rise to the challenge. Currently, AVID has been adopted by nearly more than 30,000 educators in 44 states and 16 countries/territories. The system serves more than 800,000 students worldwide and over 2,000 students at 9 middle schools and 8 high schools in Virginia Beach City Public Schools. For more information and an AVID application, contact Madeline Day, [email protected]. April 29, 2016 A list of the candidates that were selected for AVID will be released by Corporate Landing Middle School. June 20, 2016 Ocean Lakes Elementary School will send a copy of all rising 6th grade students’ 504 plans, IEP accommodations, list of Shared Housing, list of Gifted Students, and a list of students to receive support from the Student Support Specialist. June 23, 2016 Ocean Lakes Elementary School will send a PDF copy of all rising 6th grade students’ report cards to Corporate Landing Middle School. For Plaza Middle School IB Program… Applications are now being accepted for the 2016-2017 school year. February 2, 2016 is the deadline for applications. For Kemps Landing & Old Donation School… Kemps Landing/Old Donation School utilizes the one-day-a-week pullout model to provide gifted education for students in grades 3-8 who are identified in dance. The same pullout model is used for students in grades 3-5 identified in gifted visual arts. All sixth through eighth grade students identified as gifted in visual arts who wish to participate in the Gifted Visual Arts Program attend Virginia Beach Middle School as full time students and receive instruction in gifted art without missing a day of their academic classes. Both the Gifted Visual Arts and Dance Education programs are designed to offer instruction that challenges the students and meets their educational needs in their areas of giftedness. Contact Gina Byrne, [email protected], or Marci McGohan, [email protected], for more information. 5 PARENT SURF REPORT OCEAN LAKES ES | Issue #3 Did you miss Polar Express Day?
