Invest in
shares
For various reasons, we are becoming increasingly comfortable with the
concept of leasing. In many cases, it enables us to benefit from something we
may not be able to purchase outright, e.g. a luxury car, and also gives us the
option to upgrade more frequently. But, significantly, it also reduces the hassle
of ownership.
Research undertaken by Alex Parés (p.19) reveals a rise in charter and boat
share practices via boat clubs, and many boat owners, according to boatsharefinder.
org, have turned to boat sharing schemes as a way to spread costs and maximise
enjoyment. There are many options, including: fractional ownership; boating
syndicates; private boat share and managed boat share syndicates; membership
schemes; and charter purchase.
In July, Freedom Boat Club, which claims to be the largest and oldest boat club
in the USA with 10,000 members in 19 states, added a dozen new franchise clubs
in locations coast-to-coast. The club provides reciprocal access to 850 boats
nationwide and attracts newcomers and seasoned boaters alike who prefer the
convenience and cost savings that club membership offers. “The sharing economy
and collaborative consumption trend is alive and well in the boat club sector as we
continue to experience record-setting franchise and membership growth nationwide,”
says Freedom Boat Club president and CEO, John Giglio.
This view is supported by US boat-sharing company Boatsetter, which reported in
October that it had secured over 165 marina partnerships. The company manages
vessels that are privately owned and maintained but might rarely leave their slips. For
a marina, increase in activity translates into income. Slip occupancy is guaranteed,
fuel sales rise, and retail and dining outlets enjoy increased traffic.
“It’s highly strategic,” explains Boatsetter CEO, Jaclyn Baumgarten. “If we get more
people actively participating in boating, we end up stimulating the marine economy
in a very significant way. Marinas, a major segment of the industry, see the long-term
financial benefits of embracing boat-sharing.”
The existing partnerships range from large groups to small regional and local
facilities and the company has thousands of boat listings located in top destinations
worldwide.
The Boatsetter concept could ironically also help reverse the trend away from
private boat ownership by making it more financially viable.

Growth for marina training
GLOBAL: The Global Marina Institute (GMI) has noted positive growth in
marina training over the 2015 period. The Marina Industries Association (MIA)
saw numbers rise in course participation both out of Asia and Australia, and
British Marine attendance was on par with 2014 GMI course participation. The
institute sees this as a positive sign for the health of the marina and wider
boating industries.
GMI chairman, Mick Bettesworth,
commented: “One of the very pleasing
developments is the growing number
of countries that are represented at
GMI marina education courses. GMI
courses at both Intermediate and
Advanced level often attract almost
half the delegates from outside of the
UK and Australia. At MIA’s October
Advanced Marina Management (AMM)
course there were participants from
Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Hong
Kong, UAE, New Zealand and Australia
and British Marine’s AMM course in
Amsterdam attracted delegates from
the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium,
Turkey and the Caribbean.”
The GMI sees this as a reflection
of the growth of marina industries in
eastern Europe, the Middle East and
Asia. This is further reflected in the fact
that, for the first time, British Marine
and MIA will run an Advanced course in
Dubai in March 2016.

Charterers welcome
superyacht berths
SPAIN: An expansion project to add seven new superyacht berths at Port
Andratx in Mallorca is under way. Approval was granted by the Balearic
Government Port Authority back in December 2014.
The new berths are welcomed by
resident charter company easyboats, as
director Lorenzo Vila explains: “Not only
is our business based in Port Andratx,
but we were born and raised here, so
we have seen the transformation from
humble fishing village to millionaires’
and billionaires’ playground. While the
fishing industry still very much exists,
the port’s image is now very upscale
with high-end restaurants, eight-figure
price tag villas and superyachts on the
scene. These new berths, which range
between 26m [85.3ft] and 30m [98.4ft],
are much needed and we’ve already
reserved one for an easyboat client –
who happens to be a billionaire from
northern Europe.”
At a budget of almost €2 million, the
seven-berth expansion also adds 34
new car parking spaces. The extended
quay offers the spin-off benefit of
reducing the swell coming into the port
for other marina users.

The most important marina
construction decision lays
beneath the surface
SEAFLEX CAN HANDLE PRACTICALLY ANY TIDE, ANY WAVE, ANY DEPTH, ANY BOTTOM TYPE & HURRICANE STRENGTH FORCES.
Make a mooring decision worthy of
your entire marina investment
You spend a lot of time researching options for your marina build or upgrade. Since the
anchoring is what is going to hold your marina investment in place it is arguably the
most crucial components you will decide on. Seaflex is an elastic mooring solution that
expands and retracts with each tide and wave, taking on and dampening the forces
year after year. It does this while being invisible from the surface, creating some
of the most modern, sleek, state of the art marinas of the world.
With 45 years of research and development Seaflex is the
most technologically advanced mooring option in the
world, anchoring thousands of marinas, wave
attenuators and buoys worldwide.
Research your options, give
your marina the mooring
solution it deserves!

Cardiff group buys
West Wales marina
UK: Cardiff Marine Group has purchased Aberystwyth Marina on the west
coast of Wales and is preparing to undertake a number of phased investments
to upgrade facilities.
The Group, which has existing
centres in Cardiff and Swansea,
has experienced rapid growth over
the past seven years, and offers an
integrated approach to boat owners
with an existing portfolio that includes
350-berth Cardiff Marina; 110 drystack
berths in Cardiff; Cardiff Marine Village
business park; and boatyards in Cardiff
and Swansea.
Cardiff Marine Group director,
Christopher Odling-Smee, commented:
“Our purchase of Aberystwyth Marina
represents a long-term commitment
to upgrading the marina. We strongly
believe in the potential of the marina,
which we consider to offer great
opportunities for growth.”
Planned works will see Van Oord
dredge the marina basin; Walcon
Marine supply a new pontoon
configuration to improve layout and
increase capacity; and additional
contractors work to upgrade the
infrastructure to improve presentation
and security. To help with upgrades,
the Group has been awarded £300,000
by the Coastal Communities Fund.
This fund aims to encourage the
economic development of UK coastal
communities by awarding funding to

Fisherman’s Wharf to be Macau highlight
CHINA: Poralu Marine has replaced
an old marina at Fisherman’s Wharf
in Macau as part of an ongoing
project spearheaded by Macau
Legend Development. Macau is a
small peninsula in mainland China,
across the Pearl River delta from
Hong Kong.
Virginie Segura, explained that the
marina was part of a waterfront renewal
programme that will put Macau in
the spotlight. On this basis, a top
design was required with emphasis on
sustainability. Poralu carried out a study
on the wave protection system before
managing the entire marina project.
The marina complements a 5-star
hotel, the Landmark Macau Hotel, a
convention centre and an international
recreational area. The development
is located on the peninsula’s external
port and is a mark of the Government
of Macau’s willingness to develop
international business and leisure
tourism.
The site presented real technical
challenges that included working with
fixed posts from the previous marina
system. It now has a fully recyclable
aluminium pontoon system with
Ecostyle polypropylene decking.

USA: Great Kills Marina in Gateway National Park on Staten Island, New York, has
been rebuilt. The marina was completely destroyed by Hurricane Sandy and the
emphasis for its new Meeco Sullivan dock system is ability to withstand future
hurricane force winds and storm surges.
Owned by The National Parks Service
and operated by Marinas of the Future,
Inc., Great Kills Marina serves the New
York metropolitan area and northern New
Jersey. The rebuild was led by marina
manager Ed Tomanek, with JT Cleary, Inc.,
as marine contractor and VHB Engineers
in charge of marina engineering, anchoring
and utilities design.
The new marina system required
significantly more steel anchor piles,
measuring up to 20in (50.8cm) in diameter
and 80ft (24.38m) in length. The timber
docks incorporate large utility raceways
and have a combination of timber and
composite decking. The system offers 350
slips from 24-60ft (7.3-18.28m) and a 10ft
(3m) wide x 1500ft (457m) long outer dock
for mooring larger boats.
Meeco Sullivan was awarded the contract
in September 2013 and started shipping
the first 45 truckloads of docks in April
2014.
All deadlines were met although the
project experienced many delays with
permitting and approvals.

Prince Philip Yacht
Haven secures future
for Royal Southern
The Royal Southern Yacht Club (RSrnYC), founded in 1837, moved to its current
River Hamble site near Southampton, UK, in 1936. It has enjoyed an enviable
reputation for hosting sailing events despite having limited on-water facilities.
Faced with potential failure of its landside assets by flooding and tidal erosion,
the Club had to commit to major renovation and, in the process, asked its patron
HRH The Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, if he would lend his name to a
new development. Completion of the RSrnYC’s Prince Philip Yacht Haven (PPYH)
has now secured the site and transformed the Club into a vibrant events centre.

The RSrnYC has 1,600 club
members. Sixty members own boats
moored at the club and others have
nearby marina or river moorings. Prior
to the installation of its new Walcon
floating berth system, the Club had two
mid-stream pontoons, only accessible
by water taxi or tender, along with a
holding pontoon that connected directly
to shore in shallow water. But before the
new marina pontoons could be installed
many hurdles had to be negotiated.
“The biggest challenges were
securing the consents and managing
the local public consultation,” Ward
explained. Five separate approvals
were required in the licensing regime
and there was a long history of local

The Royal Southern site is modest,
and constrained on all sides by other
River Hamble activities and influences,
including water depths, tidal flows,
neighbouring uses, and navigation and
access to the main river channel. Any
renovation was further complicated
by the historical cross-over between
the access and activities, on both land
and water, of RSrnYC and its near
neighbour the Royal Air Force Yacht
Club (RAFYC). The Clubs needed
to work together to find meaningful
solutions, and consideration regarding
water space also had to be given to
the adjacent pontoons of Port Hamble
Marina. There is also a public right of
way running straight through the site.
The prime drivers for the development
were the need to safeguard and stabilise
the waterfront, improve berthing and
gain full tidal access to walk ashore
Marina Projects took responsibility for
detailed design, stakeholder and public
consultations, and planning, and then
project managed the entire procurement
and construction process using a
selection of specialist contractors. “When
we first became involved in the planning
and design process four years ago, we
knew there would be many challenges,”
said Marina Projects managing director
Mike Ward. “But doing nothing was not
an option for the Royal Southern, as
the landside assets were effectively
falling into the river. Refurbishment has
secured the Club, its contribution to the
local economy in terms of employment
and direct and indirect spend, and
created a legacy for future generations
of members.”

objection to projects on this part of the
river. “Our strategy was to consolidate
and bring the suite of applications
together and deal with objections at
once. And, during the whole process,
we maintained constant communication
with the local community and were
always available to talk to residents,
especially those with homes directly
overlooking the site.”
A detailed navigation risk assessment
also had to be undertaken and
presented for extensive scrutiny.
“Navigation was a major issue,” noted
Marina Projects’ Dan McKiernan, who
project managed PPYH. “A narrow
access zone between the Club’s midstream pontoons had become perceived
as a public right of way and was used
frequently by rowers and others.”
This was further complicated by the
need to identify potential environmental
impacts, most particularly those brought
about by the proposed capital dredge
operation and the resultant changes to
tidal flows in the immediate area.
“Every spring tide, the site flooded
on a regular basis and this impacted
on all the buildings and the car park.
The whole site had to be raised by
approximately 1m (3.28ft). There
was also significant contamination,”
McKiernan confirmed.
A flood defence strategy had to
be developed and approved by the
Environment Agency and permission
obtained for the capital dredge operation
– to remove large amounts of material
from the river bed – that was due to
be contracted to ML (UK). “Against the
odds, the capital dredge proved easier
in terms of permissions than expected,”
Ward noted, but the result was a lot of
spoil. “We had a great deal of work to do
with the contaminated material although
we were able to identify the amount
of contamination was less than first
expected,” McKiernan added. “Through
a comprehensive process of sampling
and analysis, we were able to promote
and successfully certify the remediation
of the contaminated material. The top
layer of spoil – approximately 1,000m²
(10,764ft²) – was removed and treated
to make it inert and was then used on
site as fill material.”
Dredging and sheet piling were the
grassroots undertakings and the latter
– in flood prone water – was a big
project. Two walls had to be built and
connected: an Anchor Wall in the car
park and the main Quay Wall further
out into the river. In one area, the main
wall was situated just 0.5m (1.45ft) from
the yacht club building. “Installing the
sheet pile wall was a significant marker
as we didn’t know what we might find,”
said McKiernan. “The ground was also
very soft, which made for further design
challenges throughout.”
In all, two hundred and six 20.5m
(67.25ft) long sheet piles were
incorporated in the Quay Wall and one
hundred and five 10m (32.8ft) sheet
piles used for the Anchor Wall. The
two were secured together using 20m
(65.6ft) long shrouded tie-rods. In order
to minimise impacts on local residents,
landside access was restricted, which
meant barging in main supplies by
water with consequent risk of delays
due to bad weather.
When piling and dredging were
complete, Walcon – which had
already been at work on site with the
Walcon Wizard all-purpose crane and
piling barge – was ready to install
a new pontoon system. Maricer
was contracted to supply, install and
commission service pedestals and
pontoon utilities, including mains
electrical power and mains water supply.
The pontoon system included a bespoke
floating slipway designed to give the
Club’s junior members full tidal access.
Preparation for the pontoon installation
had been set early in the build process
by the creation of an additional pontoon
linked to the mid-stream pontoons to
house vessels moored at pontoons
scheduled for removal.
The new pontoon system finally gave

all members shoreside access to their
boats for the first time in the Club’s
history. Dedicated disabled access was
also incorporated into the design; an
important requirement for the Club.
Final touches included surfacing the
car park, which is no longer in danger
of slipping into the river, installing a
linkspan to give RAFYC members
access to their all tide access pontoons
and heaving in pre-cast concrete slabs
to complete construction of a new
Quarter Deck terrace.
On Thursday 4th June, after eight
months of construction work, the
£2.6 million Prince Philip Yacht Haven
was officially commissioned by none
other than its patron HRH the Duke
of Edinburgh. Prince Philip spoke at
length with members and guests and
was eager for a tour of the new facility.
He unveiled a commemorative plaque
before joining everyone for lunch.
Over the past months, the failing Quay
Wall has become a forgotten concern
for members and its replacement is
now a new habitat for marine creatures
enjoying its living wall. The original
jetty that once gave access to the
haven’s sole shoreside pontoon is now
a spacious 114m² (1,227ft²) location
for functions, and the Quarter Deck –

– is an outdoor extension to the dining
facilities, and a prime spot to view the

Port pressure
Racking up success
for nautical leisure
Time and money are keeping young people away from nautical leisure
pursuits. Marinas are also facing increasingly strong pressure from regulators
to become more integrated with society, and public facilities are being asked
to bring in higher revenues. Using the Spanish market as a sounding board,
Alex Parés explores how boat charter and drystack can help.
In Spain and elsewhere there are
conflicting boating trends. On one hand,
boat charter is rising significantly and,
on the other hand, there is a disturbing
withdrawal from sailing by part of the
young generation. The average age
of boat owners is increasing. Partly
because of these factors, current
demand has shifted from 6-8m (19.626ft) moorings to ones of greater
length. Installing berths for longer boats
meets the needs of today but could
curb entry-level boat ownership in the
future.
Charter and club choices
For many boaters, charter is a more
rational use of boats. The economic
crisis encouraged owners who only
used their boats sporadically to
opt for renting as a more sensible
alternative. In Spain in 2014, charter
boat registrations rose by 62.68%
compared to 2013. The last season
was particularly positive, with average
growth of 116% over the previous year.
Boat clubs provide another avenue.
By paying an annual membership fee
and a monthly fee, the member
has access to a fleet of boats. This
simple concept (which is widely
developed in the USA and other
countries) does not exist in the
Mediterranean.
In addition to pressure
from environmentalists,
society is making new
demands regarding
public concessions,
especially if these
relate to public land of
interest, e.g. waterfronts.
Demands include: greater
accessibility; a higher
capacity for development
and creation of employment; better
integration between the marina and
its local environment; and economic
sustainability.
Various administrations are
responding to the new social
requirements. Port authorities are
taking new measures and establishing
strict codes of sustainability and respect
for the environment; town councils –
Above and below: Tifón Water Planet
Baigorria in Rosario, Argentina,
handles 900 boats. A major extension to
accommodate a further 2,000
boats is in progress.
Attracting the young generation
is crucial and the problem involves
more than just economics. If
current leisure patterns are
analysed, we find that there
is a need for activities to be
more accessible, abundant and
diverse. Competition to fill free
time has increased enormously
and an activity that takes time
away from enjoyment loses
in the competition. The trend
thus dictates a move away
from boat ownership, which
is time consuming in terms
of maintenance and damage
prevention and includes worry
factor, towards charter and club
boating.

boat cleanliness. Keeping a boat in a
drystack is environmentally friendlier
and availability may be better than for
wet slips.
The prime opportunity, however, to
satisfy the new social demand is to
implement drystacks along the coast,
both in ports and other sheltered
coastal and riverine areas. The
stumbling blocks are urban constraints
and, above all, visual impact. The latter
has been a major obstacle for the
development of drystacks in the world
but, consequently, it is also a factor
that has been much improved and
developed.
• Investment costs do not usually

• The innovation creates an image that
helps to promote the facility.
• Tax rates can be cut.
• Towing traffic and inappropriate tow
arrangements in port and residential
areas can be reduced.
• Pollution and carbon footprint is
lowered. This could lead to lower
taxes in the future.
Hoist or forklift
Drystacks are basically divided into
hand operated (forklift) facilities or
mechanical (hoist) based operations. In
the USA and Argentina – two countries
where drystack is most prolific –
development has gone in different
directions. Whereas forklift systems
dominate in the USA, automated
and semi-automated drystacks are
performing well in Argentina.
• Insurance policy reduction is
possible.
www.marinaworld.com - November/December 2015
This is how they differ:
1
Initial investment: investment in
hand operated systems is lower
and implies less risk.
2
Operating costs: annual
expenditure for hand operated
systems is high in insurance,
consumption, energy costs and
also in taxes and human resources.
3
Yield: the hand operated systems
can perform a boat launch in
six minutes. If we add the return
procedure, the yield is four or five
units/hour. Automated systems
can carry out the whole operation
in three minutes, which increases
performance to 20 units/hour.

Manpower: personnel expenses
are 50% lower in automated
systems. The forklift operator’s

Measure: forklifts need
corridors twice the
width of those needed
for hoist systems.
Automated systems
thus save 25% of the
total occupied space.
6
Versatility: hoist
systems have a more
rigid process system.
Forklift performance
guidelines can,
however, be modified.
7
Fire-fighting: a sealed

CO2 and avoids the drawbacks of
flooding systems that can overload
and damage structures and
vessels.

9
Assignments: in a hand operated
drystack, the price of the berth is
determined by the forklift’s service
quality, implying a possible drastic
loss in its value in the event of
failure. Automatic drystack risk of
failure is smaller due to the fact that
exploitation expenditures are less.
Incidents: automated systems
reduce the human element in
manoeuvres and consequently also
reduce accidents and other risk
factors, thereby avoiding setbacks
caused by interruption of activity.
10 Parking: some automated systems
combine boat and vehicle
storage, saving more space
and providing parking space
for each user.
Looking good
Obtaining approval for the visual impact
of a drystack is even more difficult than
satisfying town planning restrictions.
Efforts must be made to integrate it
into the landscape despite the fact
that many projects are located in port
areas where industrial warehouses and
vertical projections are generally fairly
common.
• Using plant walls, transparencies,
curtain walls etc., to help reduce
impact.
Other factors, aside from the actual
building, must be considered:
• Locating the drystack so as to reduce
its visual impact.
• Utilising unused facilities and
hangars.
Various measures can be taken when
considering the drystack structure:
• Using panels or vegetation screens
• Building at different heights and

11 Other factors: hoist systems
can avoid acoustic signals,
car soot and dirt in sealed
installations. Moreover, they
can also operate without

are still low. They have
great potential, however, for
improvement.

Four-wheel ‘radius’ steering
makes it easy to negotiate corners

There are many other special
advantages:
Fremantle drystack
buys first-of-class FLX
The Boathouse Marina in Fremantle near Perth is the first fully undercover,
enclosed drystack in Western Australia. In order to stack vessels up to 34
feet (10.36m) in length, reduce aisle width and maximise manoeuvrability, the
operators ordered an all-new Wiggins Marina FLX (MFLX) machine.
The MFLX will typically handle
vessels weighing 16,000lb (7,257kg)
at a 14ft (4.26m) load centre and can
lift vessels up to 19ft (5.79m) wide. It is
sophisticated, heavy-duty, stable and
weighs in at 81,000lb (36,741kg) but
when it side-steps down the aisles
and swings around a corner, it
moves like a dancer.
The concept of the new
machine owes all to the
proven lifting mechanism of
a conventional marina truck.
The lifting mechanism (mast) is
mounted on a traverse carriage
that moves the length of the
machine. When at a seawall, the
mast is in the forward position to
retrieve the boat. It then traverses
to the back of the machine. This
distributes the weight evenly over
the four tyres and allows for the
smallest aisle width possible –
boat length plus 12 feet (3.65m).
When at the drystack, the mast
moves forward to position the
boat on the rack but the operator,
A generous footprint makes the
MFLX sufficiently stable for
transportation and racking of much
larger boats.
www.marinaworld.com - November/December 2015
The MFLX offers 38ft (11.58m)
positive and 12ft (3.65m) negative
lift and can lift full capacity to
maximum lift height. Its increased
footprint provides added stability
that allows much larger boats to
be stacked on higher racks. This can
increase the average boat size of a
building or open up the floor space as
needed, with the largest boats on the
second or third rack.
Improved weight distribution reduces
tyre loads and is thus ideal for marinas
with thinner concrete hardstand or
for reducing concrete costs at new
facilities. According to Wiggins,
concrete cost savings may actually pay
for the machine.
In many cases, the MFLX can be
configured to work on launching piers if
a seawall is not available.
At The Boathouse Marina, the MFLX
is now at work enabling operators to
offer swift turn-around. Customers call
an hour ahead, drive up to one of the
45 secure parking bays and get ready
to board their boat. The marina offers

time.”
Rolec continued to spread its wings
globally, experiencing success in South
America and the Caribbean at marinas
such as Nelson’s Dockyard and Jolly
Harbour in Antigua, before turning its
focus to South East Asia.
The Spinnaker pedestal, inspired by the
Burj Al Arab Tower, was developed for the

as operations director Holly Brown
explains: “One of our achievements I
feel really proud about is that after 25
years the majority of Rolec’s partners
and associates remain the same. We
are truly delighted to have been able to
maintain these partnerships/friendships
with leading industry figures for the past
quarter of a century. We believe this is a
true testament to the high quality of the
products and services we manufacture
and supply.”
Demand throughout Europe
increased over the next few years,
especially in Spain, Greece and
Portugal. After completing hundreds
of marina projects, including a huge
project in Jersey, Rolec pushed on even
further and exhibited at the inaugural
Dubai International Boat Show (DIBS).
It continues to be a leading exhibitor at
DIBS to this day.
The Middle East proved a lucrative
market and Rolec claims to have won
90% of the marina projects in the
region. It also made headlines last
year for producing the world’s largest
bespoke power supply of its kind
for a superyacht owned by the Emir
of Qatar. This 2,000 amp, 3 phase
(6,000 amp total) MegaMaster unit
is nearly 7ft 6in (2.28m) tall, just
under 10ft (3m) wide and includes
one and two inch (2.5 and 5cm)
water supplies.
The company was one of the first
from Western Europe to bring its
products to marinas in the region, at a
time when the South East Asia marina
industry was still at an early stage of
development. Since then, Rolec claims
to have become the area’s main ‘go
to’ marina service provider when new
developments or refurbishments are
required.
Firsts and references
Rolec also claims to offer the world’s
largest range of marina service
pedestals. There is a marina service
pedestal for every requirement and
budget. Rolec believes the superior
quality and reliability of its pedestals
has made it first in line to work on
some of the world’s most iconic marina
projects. The list is impressive and
includes:
• One°15 Marina, Singapore
• Jersey Harbour
• The Pearl
• The Palm
• Limassol Marina

“For more than two decades we
have been dedicated to providing

world’s marina industry,” Holly Brown
explains. “During this time, we have
invested substantial resources into
developing a range of marina products
and services that have proved to be
ideal solutions. Proof of this lies in the
number of customers who return to us
time and again because we know their
environments.”
“We pride ourselves on researching
and accruing detailed local knowledge
of the regions around the world,
which includes having a thorough
understanding of climatic conditions,
corrosive elements, local trends,
utility specifications, salt water and
humidity levels, and the types of boats
traditionally in use in the area,” she
continues.
In addition to developing the products
it brings to the marina services
market, Rolec has also expanded its
product range to offer solutions for
sanitation and LED lighting. It is also
proud to have been the first marina
services provider to offer computerised
management systems.
“Rolec has had an abundance of
milestones over the years - too many
to mention,” Alsop notes. “We are a
pioneering company, always coming up
with new installation methods and ways
to bring marina services up to date.
This has included introducing a variety
of berth management and smartcard

Upgrade machine
boosts Shelter Island
efficiency
Shelter Island Marina & Boatyard in Richmond, BC, Canada, has purchased a
new Marine Travelift (MT) 75 BFMII mobile boat hoist. The machine, delivered
in September, is designed to handle powerboats, sailboats, tugs, fishing boats
and patrol boats of approximately 80ft (24m) in length.
Founded in 1978 on the south arm
of the Fraser River, Shelter Island
Marina is a full-service facility and
one of the largest yards on the Pacific
Coast. It operates two of the biggest
Marine Travelift mobile boat hoists
along the western seaboard and has
purchased five MT machines to date.
It can lift vessels from 20 to 130 feet (6
to 39.6m), provides long- and shortterm storage for hundreds of boats
and boasts more than 8,000 linear feet
(2,438.4m) of freshwater moorage.
“With more than 20 acres [8.09ha]
of boatyard accommodating more than
400 vessels, it’s imperative that we
have reliable and efficient equipment
to keep the yard operating smoothly,”
said Terry McPhail, Shelter Island’s
president. “Marine Travelift has always
provided the newest technologies.
Given the success we’ve enjoyed
with our previous four Marine Travelift
hoists, and the great local service from
Kendrick Equipment, we were pleased
to order another machine.”
Shelter Island’s new 75 BFMII
features two-speed hoists. These allow
operators to increase lifting speed for
more efficiency when the machine
is in high demand and in the Pacific
Northwest’s greatly fluctuating tides.
It also has MT’s signature top beam
extension. With this innovative feature,
the top beam is moved forward,
providing additional clearance while
the boat is supported in the slings. This
allows the boatyard to lift a much larger
number of sailboats without needing to
adjust the vessels’ rigging. There is no
need to dismantle the forestay, which
reduces stress on the mast and gives
greater ground clearance to the keel
during lifting. It also allows the yard to
handle recreational and commercial
power vessels that have larger, higher
superstructures.
“Shelter Island hauls a lot of larger
sailboats, including race boats, and the
top beam extension makes handling
them a lot easier — and quicker,” said
Dave Marshall, sales manager at
Kendrick Equipment.
In addition, the new 75 BFMII
www.marinaworld.com - November/December 2015
Marshall said that,
in addition to the quiet
operation, the extra fuel
tank was a big plus: “They
won’t have to rely on mobile
filling as often, and the
automatic variable throttle
(AVT) was a must to keep
fuel-related operating expenses down.
It also makes it easier for operators to
communicate over engine noise.”
Wireless remote control is also
invaluable for increasing operator
visibility of the boat, launch piers and
surrounding area, improving operational
safety and ensuring maximum
manoeuvrability in the yard. It also
allows the yard to operate the machine
with less manpower.
According to McPhail at Shelter
Island, the decision to purchase the
new BFMII was easy. “After seeing the
benefits of the remote operation with
our newer 220-ton Marine Travelift, and
the fact that we normally replace our
machines every 10 to 12 years, the
option was clear,” he observed.
By trading in their machines
approximately every decade and
maintaining them well, Shelter Island
has been able to apply trade-in
allowances to new machines, covering
approximately 75% of the purchase
price.
“They definitely were pleased with
the efficiencies the remote offered on
the 220-ton machine, so they insisted
on it for the 75-ton, along with the
digital load scales with readout on the
transmitter,” Marshall said.
The partnership between Kendrick
Equipment and Shelter Island is an
important one. The marina purchased
all five of its Marine Travelift machines
from the Delta, British Columbia-based
dealer, which has already sold three 75
BFMIIs this year.

Eden launches
‘electrical’ hoist
Italian company Eden Technology has introduced a new generation of boat mover,
known as the Electrical Trollift, to complement its Trollift marine hoist range.

boat stands
The Trollift is able to change its track
in order to fit different size docks and,
most importantly, can store boats
extremely close together. This patented
solution avoids the need for an auxiliary
tyre trolley for moving boats and thus
saves the operator time and money.
The system works either by means
of an hydraulic cylinder that pushes or
pulls the telescopic cross beam
or with an articulated hinge and
U shape cross beam. All the
wheels are set at a 90° position
during the expanding/contracting
operation of the machine, which
is undertaken by an electronic
steering system.
New generation machines
also have a patented steering
system but all movements and
lift operations are powered by
electric motors. No hydraulic
components are installed so as
to ensure maximum reliability
and efficiency. All electrical
components are standard
and are easily purchased on
local markets to give minimum
downtime when machines are
being serviced. Machines can
be maintained by an electrician
in the Eden Technology
service department via a
tele-assistance device in each
machine.

“With two Sublifts in operation,

“When we launched a boat before,
we first had a crane that lifted it on to
a trailer pulled by a tractor that brought
the boat down to the water. Then there
was a second crane that lifted it off the
trailer into the water. In the autumn, the
process was reversed putting the boats
back in their cradles. The launching
was perceived as stressful and there
is always a considerable risk when a
boat is hanging high in the air below a
crane.”
“Now it’s easy to lift off the boat from
the cradle and bring it straight into
the water. It is also easier since the

weather, the boat remains securely in
place.
There are also benefits for marinas.
For stern-to mooring arrangements, by
keeping each vessel strictly within its
designated water area and minimising
manoeuvring space, marinas can
increase their berth capacity, in some
cases by as much as an impressive
150%. Vessels can also be securely
moored at alongside berths.
The system requires minimal
installation effort. It is available as
an add-on (being compatible with all
currently available pontoon systems),
and can be incorporated into an initial
marina design. Models suit vessels
from 6m (19.68ft) to megayacht size.
The art of damping
and stability
Since Austrian company DualDocker launched its innovative solution for
mooring boats seven years ago, it has honed designs, introduced new
applications and radically expanded the DualDocker portfolio.
Developed over a 12 month period
during 2007/08 by keen yachtsman
Michael Fuhrmann and extensively
tested by Olympic sailing professionals
prior to production, DualDocker was
devised to keep moderately sized boats
in place in marina berths.
The system has since been rolled
out as proven equipment for mooring
pontoons, houseboats and other
floating structures up to 10,000 tons in
weight.
Patented innovation
DualDocker is undoubtedly innovative:
a purely mechanical, highly damped
mooring solution based on the principle
of reducing kinetic energy and the
resulting braking forces. As such, it
eliminates damage, worry and distress.
Keeping a floating structure stable not allowing it to gain momentum - is
crucial. A drifting yacht or houseboat in
strong winds, swells, choppy waters or
currents is a nightmare. Yachts colliding
with quay walls, or floating homes
jerking, deprive everyone of a good
night’s sleep.
The concept of damping is not new,
46
of course - there are no cars without
suspension – but DualDocker has
perfected the art of damping, and its
patented system is claimed to provide
the highest damping characteristics
and short damping ways possible.
The product is purely mechanical
and self-sufficient, making it
environmentally friendly.
Other significant benefits are minimal
maintenance and zero impact on the
underwater environment.
Floating houses, offices and
more...
Over the past few years, DualDocker
has been used to moor floating
buildings all over Europe in an
environmentally friendly way. It has
made them stable and secure, highly
damped and with zero play regardless
of water level. They are also collision
and jerk-free, and damage and
accident-free courtesy of one-step
boarding.
One of three floating pontoon mooring
solutions recently installed in Australia.
Using materials that guarantee
long life expectancy, like anodised
seawater resistant aluminium,
DualDocker ensures a quality
‘Made in Austria’ product. All
aluminium components are
at least anodised if not hard
anodised for longevity and
negligible maintenance. The
DualDocker is also aesthetically
pleasing.
Mooring and stabilising

Mooring a boat with DualDocker
in a marina berth increases safety
and stability for both boat and boat
owner. It is easy to step aboard,
there are no bow mooring lines, no

DualDocker has most recently moored
a recreation platform on Lake Geneva,
Switzerland (see Marina World July/
August 2015) and three floating
pontoons in Australia. V-shaped
arrangements are used, with the two
securing booms of each V absorbing
impact and offering high damping
capacity.
The product is ideal for simple
walkways, modular platforms,
yacht mooring pontoons, seaplane
disembarking platforms, heavy-duty
pontoons in exposed locations and
private jetties in sensitive waters.
marinas or to replace swing moorings
and, as expected, are maintenancefree, have longevity and offer smooth
damping capacity. Models of 0.5 to 20
tons are available.
More ideas
Swing moorings can be radically
improved if replaced with the
DualDocker Single Point Mooring
Solution. Traditional chain and anchor
systems are criticised for causing
environmental damage as the anchor
drags across the seabed, especially
during storms. Each mooring also
has a wide swinging radius, minimal
or zero damping and requires regular
maintenance with associated diving
costs.
The DualDocker option is to secure
one non-corrosive DualDocker arm
into the seabed with ball and mooring
cleat attached. The unit cannot drag
whatever the weather, thus keeping
flora and fauna intact, and can be fixed
to existing dead weights if required.
The product’s mechanical damping
elements protect boat cleats.
Like other innovations, the Single
Point Mooring Solution can be used
to save space and thus potentially
increase the number of buoys at any
mooring field. The benefit lies in a
smaller swinging radius of just 3m
(9.8ft) in a water depth of 5m (16.4ft)
in comparison with the 7m (23ft) radius
likely required by a chain arrangement.
Boats also remain very stable in the
water irrespective of wind, wave or
current.
In addition to being maintenance-free
and offering longevity due to the use
of anodised aluminium and synthetic
guides, the system is simple to install
and can be used in tidal and non-tidal
locations.
Exploring new territory
Single Point Mooring Solutions and
Telescopic Piles allow safe, economical
and environmentally friendly mooring
outside the marina, in bays and
estuaries, for a range of vessels, from
fishing boats to megayachts.
DualDocker will be exhibiting all
models in the Marina & Yard Pavilion
(MYP) at METS, Amsterdam.

Keeping the floating pontoon from
moving and jerking (caused by wind
and choppy waters) while smoothly
damping impacts (e.g. from arriving
vessels) are the key factors to success.
Telescopic pile
Suitable for use in all environments
including shallow waters with
considerable water level differences,
the new pile simply adjusts to changing
water levels of up to 10m (33ft). It
ensures zero visual impact.
Telescopic Piles can also be installed
as bow mooring points for yachts in

buoys, Almarin has launched a new range of mooring
buoys. These are used for mooring vessels as well
as for containment booms and floating cages used in
aquaculture.
The buoys have a
galvanised steel structure
with a safe working load of
12,000kg (26,455lb) and
a foam filled rotomoulded
polyethylene hull. Four
versions are available
with standard diameters
of 1250mm (49.2in) and
1600mm (62.9in) and
volumes between 700 and
2500 litres (154 and 550
gallons).
Each model is available in

Marinas and yacht
harbours face rising
bills for maintenance
dredging of their basins
and approaches. A
way around this is to
focus effort in trying to
reduce the associated
sedimentation rate
by carefully designed
schemes appropriate
for each particular case.
In doing so, special
attention should be paid
to the conditions of each
problem, such as tidal or
non-tidal environment,
coastal or riverine
installations etc.
The new RecCom
report fully explores
anti-sedimentation
schemes, focusing
on aspects that
include: the impact
of site considerations
for a new marina,
e.g. the importance
of proper marina
orientation and layout; the importance of
streamlining protection
structures; positioning
of marina entrance;
and methods of
safeguarding the
free passage of
sedimentation.

Discussing fire protection options for
Ferguson’s Marina (left).
Linked detection systems offer
enhanced fire protection
A fire at Middle Harbour Yacht Club in Sydney Harbour, Australia, prompted
nearby marina operators to install some innovative fire protection solutions.
The owners of Ferguson’s Marina, only 100m (328ft) from MHYC, watched firsthand as the fire gutted part of the old timber boatshed. Only the prompt action
of neighbours smelling smoke and the quick arrival of the fire brigade saved
the rest of the building.
Ferguson’s Marina worked with
MHYC to develop an understanding of
the fire and the response process and
realised they needed a unique solution
for their fire alarms and early warning
systems.
Martin Thompson of Ferguson’s
Marina noted: “We don’t have the
benefit of close neighbours but we do
have residents in each building. My
family also lives in part of the marina
building so I needed a first class
early warning solution for the building
as, naturally, their protection is of
paramount concern to me.”
Ferguson’s asked Fire Safe Australia
& New Zealand, which has been
providing the marina with essential
services maintenance and fire protection
consultation since 2013, for help with a
suitable cost effective solution.
Fire Safe recommended installation
of a Brooks linked fire detection system.
Brooks has been designing systems
for the electrical and fire engineering
industries for over 40 years and was
the first company to introduce wireless
smoke alarm interconnection in
Australia and New Zealand.
Interconnecting smoke alarms
are now mandatory in Australia in
all new dwellings where more than
one smoke alarm is installed. In New
Zealand if more than one alarm is
installed and the type used has an
interconnection capability, it must also
be interconnected.
The safety benefits of alarm
interconnection are obvious. In the
event of one alarm detecting a fire,
all interconnected alarms will go into
alarm mode, sounding throughout the
property. All the alarms in a building
become activated simultaneously and
minimise the very real risk that, in the
event of a fire, a heavy sleeper shut
behind a bedroom door will not be
woken in time by an alarm in a remote
downstairs hallway.
Wireless interconnection enables
smoke alarms to be connected to
each other without the need for
costly, disruptive and time consuming
cabling between the alarms. A Radio
Frequency (RF) signal is used instead
to trigger all the alarms in the system.
The radio signal can travel a very
long way if there are no obstructions
www.marinaworld.com - November/December 2015
to block it - 150m (492ft) or more.
However, in practice, there will be walls,
ceilings and many other obstructions to
impede the radio signal path. In the vast
majority of properties, where two or
three alarms will be installed, the signal
from a RadioLINK unit will be more
than adequate.
Security systems can use the same
frequency as wireless interconnect
technology but they use a different
band and/or are restricted to using
the channel for 1% of the time, for a
maximum of four seconds at any one
time minimising the risk of interference.
Car alarms and mobile phones use
a completely different frequency so
interference is not possible from these
devices. Television remote controls
mostly use infra-red, which will not
affect the system.
Alarms can also be interconnected
between properties. In ordinary hardwired installations it is necessary to
cross property boundaries with mains
cable in order to interlink the alarms
(and provide the mains power). This
poses an unacceptable electrical safety
risk.
The number of connected alarms will
depend on the individual manufacturer.
According to Jeff Weston of Brooks, it
is technically possible to interconnect
up to 20 alarms, but the limiting factor
is likely to be the distance between
alarms and obstructions that may block
the radio signal. In most domestic
properties and small commercial
buildings a realistic maximum number
of alarms would be about 12.
The system is ideal for Ferguson’s
Marina as there are many areas in its
building where a regular smoke detector
cannot be heard if personnel are off site.
Ferguson’s also owns the building next
door and can now link the alarms.

Boats skim debris
from Chicago River
The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater
Chicago (MWRD) recently purchased two Elastec
aluminium trash boats to skim debris from the Chicago
River.
Elastec vessels are
designed to be manoeuvrable
in hard to reach areas and
have an inverted bow to
usher floating refuse into
a 98ft3 (2.77m3) trash
basket. They can be used
for a wide variety of marine
maintenance duties and have
a spacious 8ft x 11ft (2.4m x
3.35m) work platform.
The MWRD serves an 883
square mile (2,286km²) area,
including the city of Chicago,
and controls over 76 miles
(122.3km) of the Chicago
Areas Waterways (CAW),
which are part of the inland
waterway system connecting
52
the Great Lakes with the Gulf
of Mexico.
The MWRD receives
flow from combined sewer
collection systems, which
means that wastewater and
stormwater flow together
in a single pipe. During
heavy rain, stormwater
run-off can cause the sewer
system to reach maximum
capacity and overflow into
the waterways. This is
called a Combined Sewer
Overflow (CSO). Some of
the excess water is stored
in the MWRD’s Tunnel and
Reservoir Plan (TARP)
system but too much run-
off finds its
way to the
CAW - and
so does the
litter. Floating
debris such
as Styrofoam,
plastic bottles
and cigarette
butts create
health risks,
kill marine life
and cause
flooding.
To help
keep the Chicago River clean
and beautiful, Elastec and
MWRD worked together
to develop two customised
debris collection boats.
MWRD requested a simple
design that was easy to
operate with few moving
parts. The 23ft (7m) boats,
named Skimmy Dipper and
Skim Pickens, are designed
for daily trash skimming near
Navy Pier and along seven
miles of the river.
Elastec sales manager,
Shon Mosier, said: “The
Elastec trash boat is a unique
way to combat debris from
stormwater run-off. Trash
flows downstream and into
our waterways. We must
begin to manage marine
litter.” Mosier has also
delivered similar vessels
to the cities of Waco and
Austin for Texas Watershed
Protection departments.

Three-in-one dredger
IMS has launched the patent pending 7012 HP JetMaster Versi-Dredge. The
machine incorporates new technology to allow for heavy duty water jet
excavation of consolidated materials, environmental dredging and water
injection dredging.
“We designed the JetMaster to
increase the versatility of the 7012
HP. There is no other dredge in the
world that has the ability to excavate
compacted materials, perform water
injection dredging, and then convert
into a low turbidity environmental
dredge system. This expanded
capability allows our customers to
tackle a wider variety of projects and
contracts with minimal incremental
capital investment. Instead of
purchasing three types of dredge they
can now purchase just one,” says Ryan
Horton, IMS vice president.
250 psi (17.2 bar) to break up and
liquefy consolidated materials.
The IMS 7012 HP JetMaster VersiDredge has three different modes
that make it one of the most versatile
hydraulic dredgers in the industry – and
it can operate at a maximum depth of
33ft (10m) in all three JetMaster modes:
Mode 1: Jet Excavation
When the dredge operator encounters
compacted sand, cohesive clay or
above water solids, the JetMaster
system can be switched on to break up
and liquefy the material for the slurry
pump. The JetMaster is also effective
when dredging above water solids like
a high sand bar or a river bank.
Mode 2: Water Injection Dredging
The JetMaster can also turn the VersiDredge into a highly manoeuvrable
water injection dredger. This is ideal
for maintenance dredging of marinas,
ports and river channels when a current
flow exists. The operator simply turns
the slurry pump and cutterhead off
and switches the JetMaster on. The
JetMaster puts the sediment into
suspension where the natural water
current flow will carry it downstream or
out to sea. The Versi-Dredge’s patented
Starwheel Drive self-propulsion system
allows the dredger to manoeuvre up
and down the waterway or into marina
slips with little effort. Like all VersiDredges, the JetMaster is one-truck
transportable, making moving the
dredger from port to port for different
jobs very easy and cost effective.
Mode 3: Environmental dredging
When sensitive environmental dredging
is required, the JetMaster can simply
be turned off with a flick of a switch.
The standard SolidsMaster cutterhead
is then utilised with IMS’s unique
environmental shroud that minimises
turbidity. The Starwheel drive system
propels the dredge using surface
propulsion mode, and the optional
dredging GPS system tracks precise
cuts.
“The 7012 HP JetMaster VersiDredge will give our customers the
ability to bid on more tenders with a
single piece of equipment instead of
purchasing multiple types of dredgers
which is not cost effective,” says
Michael Young, IMS technical sales
manager. The product is available
immediately from stock.

The JetMaster has 100hp (75kW)
dedicated to two independent high
pressure water pumps integrated
vertically through wells on both the
port and starboard catamaran hull
sections of the Versi-Dredge. The 26
high pressure nozzles on the top and
sides of the cutterhead shroud are
protected with heavy-duty armour
plating to prevent damage when the
operator is pushing the SolidsMaster
into the material or when undercutting
above water solids. The nozzles have a
maximum output of 500gpm (31.5 lps).
Each nozzle produces an impressive

Lesley Robinson
has been
appointed
managing director
at MDL Marinas,
UK.
An experienced
business leader
with a strong
commercial, customer focused and
financial background, she has operated
at director level in the leisure, FMCG,
media and technology sectors both
internationally and in the UK. Her most
recent role was as a director at the
Money Advice Service.
“I’m delighted to be joining MDL and
looking forward to getting started as
soon as possible,” she said. “I’m excited
about the growth opportunities ahead of
us and to be part of the team serving our
customers.”
MDL chairman, Edward Iliffe,
welcomed Robinson and extended
thanks and warm wishes to retiring
managing director, Eamonn Feeney.
Feeney, who intends to keep up his
links with the industry as he migrates to
non-exec/consultancy work from January
2016 onwards, commented: “I’ve had
a fabulous four years at the helm here,
in what is a great industry with great
people, and I’m personally pleased to be
handing on a business in good shape to
my successor.”
Long-life
fenders
A new range of composite timber
pontoon fenders has been
launched by UK-based Dura
Composites. The product has
been designed as an alternative to
traditional timber fenders, which
are prone to rotting and splitting
and can become a safety hazard
over time.
Styled to resemble natural wood,
the fenders are produced from
Wood Plastic Composite (WPC)
manufactured via an extrusion
process using a mix of recycled
plastics and hardwood wastes with
various bespoke additives. They are
highly durable and resilient.
Fenders are available in both
standard and top board format with a
grooved anti-slip teak-effect surface
which perfectly complements the Dura
James Burbury has
joined the board of
the Australia-based
Marina Industries
Association (MIA).
He is managing
director of Burbury
Consulting, a specialist
engineering and project management
company in Tasmania that undertakes
wide ranging contracts, including marina
projects, in Australia and overseas.
MIA president, Andrew Chapman,
described Burbury as an excellent
addition to the ten-person MIA board.
“James brings very relevant experience,
skills and energy to the board. He will
be most active in guiding the direction
of MIA strategy particularly in the areas
of environmental and marina design
standards. I am sure he will also be
an effective voice for the needs of the
marina industry in Tasmania.”
Steve Kitchen
was appointed
marina manager
at Plymouth Yacht
Haven, UK, in time
for the busy summer
season.
Kitchen has been
part of the Yacht Havens team for over
three years as manager at Blagdons
Marine Business Park in Plymouth. As
a keen sailor, with a berth at Plymouth
Yacht Haven, he benefits from first-hand
knowledge of what customers require.
“Working together with a great
team, my goal is to ensure the marina
continues to offer berth holders and
visitors the very best in customer
service and outstanding facilities, as
well as driving further development and
investment in the site,” he said.
range of marina decking. The top board
fender can be specified with an LED
light recess channel. This allows lights
to be installed flush into the fender
to maximise visibility of the pontoon
or finger edge in the dark or in poor
weather conditions.
As they are a simple clad-on solution,
the fenders are ideal for both new
and retrofit installation and require
minimal maintenance. They will not
rot, fade or warp, never need painting
and are unaffected by a wide range of
chemicals that could cause degradation
to steel, aluminium or wood.
