Dear poultry colleague,
Did you know that the global human population
is growing with around 75 million people every
year? In other words that the world has 205,000
extra people to feed…. every single day!
Most of the global increase in number of people
happens in emerging economies with young,
ambitious populations that are working hard for
a better future. A better future implies that the
families have access to safe, affordable and tasty
food. When the disposable income of the household rises, meat becomes increasingly popular.
All statistics confirm that poultry meat and eggs
have become the world’s most popular source of
animal protein. When it comes to achieving the
highest efficiency of converting feed into meat,
the poultry industry is the absolute champion.
The role of hatcheries in efficient poultry production cannot be overestimated. The hatching of
the maximum number of healthy, performant
breeding stock, broilers and layers and achieving their full genetic potential is key for the entire
poultry value chain.
It is your and Petersime’ s responsibility - every
day again - to produce the healthiest possible
day-old chicks, poults, ducklings or gooslings with
the highest degree of efficiency. Remember: every
day more than 200,000 extra people on earth
look to you to satisfy their increasing demand for
meat and eggs!
Enjoy reading the stories in this issue of Petersime
News.

HasTavuk: preparing for a vastly expanding
poultry industry with Petersime
HasTavuk (Turkey), one of the world’s largest integrated poultry companies, decided to build a
brand new broiler hatchery and to re-equip its existing layer hatchery. Cooperating with Petersime as their partner to accomplish this major project, HasTavuk prepares for a continued strong
growth within the Turkish poultry industry.
The Turkish poultry industry has grown
spectacularly over the last years. They are
now one of the world’s largest producers
of poultry meat, processing 1,9 million
ton of broiler meat in 2014, and exporting 450,000 tons to 57 countries. An
average growth rate of 4 to 5% is forecasted annually over the next 5 years.
HasTavuk is a major player in this industry. They decided to build a brand new
broiler hatchery as well as re-equip their
existing layer hatchery. We are proud
to announce that HasTavuk has made a
clear choice for Petersime as their exclusive supplier of incubators and hatchery
equipment. In the history of Petersime
an unprecedented deal was closed: in
terms of number of machines this is the
largest concluded sales agreement ever.
<
The HasTavuk new single-stage greenfield broiler hatchery will have a total annual setting capacity of 72 million eggs.
4
Petersime will be installing BioStreamer™
setters and hatchers, including an HVAC
system, in the coming months.
They also plan to refurbish their layer
hatchery by investing in new Petersime

First Petersime hatchery in Mauritania
The Ouakkaha group recently inaugurated one of the very first hatcheries in Mauritania.
This new broiler hatchery is located east of the capital Nouakchott. Petersime distributor
Société Cidape supplied all incubators and hatchery equipment.
For many years, the Ouakkaha group has
exported broiler chicks to Mauritania.
With this new investment they can not
only supply Mauritania with local chicks
but also its neighbouring country Mali.
The hatchery will produce about 135,000
chicks per week.
El Hafid Ouakkaha, Director of the Ouakkaha group, explains: “We are extremely
satisfied with the Petersime machines we
have in our hatcheries in Morocco. Because
achieving the best quality is very important
for us, we decided once more to use Petersime equipment for our newest hatchery in
Mauritania.”
About the Ouakkaha group
The Ouakkaha group, based in Ouled Teime, between Agadir and Taroudant, is a leading chick producer in Morocco.
In 2013 they exported over 10 million hatching eggs to multiple countries in Africa, among which Senegal, Ivory Coast, Mali
and Mauritania. The group produces about 1 million standard chicks and 120,000 free-range chicks. They also own a feedmill.
Drobex-Agro opts for innovative
Petersime technologies
Drobex-Agro, Poland, has partnered with Petersime from the very beginning and they have
been expanding with Petersime equipment ever since.
Since the start of their operation in 1995
the hatchery is equipped with fully automated Petersime incubators. In 2002 and
2013 Drobex-Agro expanded the hatchery,
adding up to a yearly output capacity of
55 million day-old chicks. Earlier this year
they ordered another batch of 3 BioStreamer™ 24S setters and 7 BioStreamer™
8H hatchers, which will soon be delivered.
In the future the hatchery will extend with
another 9 BioStreamer™ 24S.
About Drobex-Agro

Aviagen and Petersime incubation
experts team up for superior results
with the BioStreamer™ Re-Store
Aviagen Hilbersdorf (Germany) one of the world’s largest
parent stock hatcheries, recently invested in Petersime BioStreamer™ Re-Store equipment and are very satisfied with
their hatchery results.
“
The Petersime BioStreamer™ ReStore suits our needs as it has been
especially designed for SPIDES treatment and can run fully automatically without the risk of destroying
hatching eggs. The good collaboration with Roger Banwell and Guy
Whetherly, incubation experts at
Petersime Hatchery Development
Department, resulted in consistent
improvement in hatchability and
chick quality. We feel confident we
have made the right choice,
“In this respect we have started to use
SPIDES treatments on our hatching eggs”,
explains Kai Kloppenborg, Hatchery
Manager at Hilbersdorf, “both for reducing
losses in hatchability due to prolonged storage as well as for improving chick quality.
Therefore we turned to Petersime specialists
again, to develop Re-Store programs in
collaboration with the Aviagen hatchery
specialist team.”
About Aviagen
Hilbersdorf
Aviagen Hilbersdorf, located near
Dresden (Germany), is Europe’s largest parent stock hatchery. In 2007
they decided to build a greenfield
parent stock hatchery and two
years later, in January 2009, the
construction was finished. It enhances Aviagen’s already unrivalled
European supply network and
provides an estimated 14 million PS
chicks per year, predominantly to
customers in Eastern and Western
Europe.
”
says Frederiek Claeys, Project Manager.
The Aviagen Hilbersdorf and Petersime
collaboration started in 2007, when
Aviagen decided to seek the advice of
experts in the field to build their greenfield parent stock hatchery. They asked
Petersime to turn their ideas into a feasible concept and provide it with a fully
customized incubation and ventilation
system, meeting all Aviagen standards.
Aviagen EPI’s mission is to deliver first
quality day-old chicks to their customers.
The aim of the hatchery is to continuously improve hatching processes to
achieve better hatchability and, more
important, good day old chick quality.

Principles of single-stage incubation
PART 1
Is the multi- vs single-stage debate finally over?
By Roger Banwell, Hatchery Development Manager, Petersime nv
Single-stage incubation is the standard method in the modern hatchery industry. However,
a lot of hatcheries are still using the multi-stage method. Running a single-stage hatchery
requires some different skills and technologies than running a multi-stage hatchery. Therefore
the Hatchery Development Department of Petersime will write some practical articles about
the principles of single-stage incubation. This article is the first in this series and describes some
general aspects between multi-stage and single-stage incubation.
Evolution of the hatchery industry from multi-stage to singlestage incubation
For many years the commercial incubation
industry was almost entirely based on the
multi-stage incubation methodology and
achieved good results. The logic of the
concept in terms of the efficient thermal
interaction between endothermic and
exothermic eggs and the ease of use made
this an ideal solution.
However as chicken consumption increased throughout the world and the
poultry industry intensified, it became
clear the multi-stage method could not
satisfy the level of bio-security demanded in the modern consumer marketplace. Added to this, the academic world
was clearly demonstrating how multistage incubation was unable to offer the
optimum conditions required by the
developing embryo.
However the initial single-stage methodology struggled to produce the
same results achieved with multi-stage.
The challenge in single-stage for the
commercial incubator manufacturers
in conjunction with academia was to
identify the optimum conditions for the
embryo and to create an incubator that
can provide these specific conditions on
a large scale.
For some time, there were many publications and articles that theorised the
potential of single-stage incubation to
be the solution to both the bio-security
issues and the creation of optimum
conditions required by the embryo.

Petersime’s Analog controller that is
particularly used for multi-stage incubation
Petersime’s first incubator especially
developed for single-stage incubation: the
AirStreamer™
It was almost inevitable that during this
period a debate would occur between
the multi- stage and single-stage points
of view, but there can be little doubt
now that a well-run, modern singlestage operation can achieve both hatch
and post-hatch results beyond the best
achievable results by a multi-stage
operation.
Single-stage incubation:
basic parameters
The optimum bandwidths for key parameters such as temperature, humidity
and CO2 for the developing embryo are
shown on the graph below.
The primary parameter is temperature,
or better described as energy absorption
and dissipation through heat exchange.
Many academic studies and commercial
trials have shown how precise tempera-

ture control, which cannot be achieved
in a multi-stage environment, significantly effects both chick quality and all
aspects of post-hatch performance in a
positive way.
Secondly, it is now well proven that the
degree of gaseous and fluid exchange,
both in terms of absolute values and
with respect to the point of embryonic
development, has an effect on final
hatch and post-hatch performance.
As research continues other factors are
becoming identified that have a significant effect, but important is that these
factors are always relative to the embryonic development stage.
Single-stage incubation:
challenges
In answer to the question “Is the multivs single-stage debate finally over?”
it appears obvious that the answer is
yes in terms of performance. However
the story does not end there. The new
challenge for the hatchery staff considering making the change from multi- to
single-stage is acquiring the expertise to
run a single-stage operation.
adjust the environment with respect
to optimal conditions. In a single-stage
incubator, this is no problem anymore.
However, the modern single-stage
demands the operator to know, through
good data analysis and incubation
knowledge, which conditions are
required by the embryo throughout
the different developmental stages. This
sets the new challenge for the incubator
manufacturer, to offer the equipment
with the technology required and the
ability to bring the necessary knowledge
and support to the industry.
Conclusion
Single-stage incubation is the standard
in a modern hatchery and with the BioStreamer™ incubator, Petersime offers
the state of the art single-stage incubator with the required modern technology. But running a single-stage hatchery
also requires some personal expertise.
Therefore Petersime offers different trainings to its customers in order to teach
them the required skills to run a singlestage hatchery with a maximized profit
for life.
Within a multi-stage incubator, there is a
mix of embryonic development stages.
This means that there is no flexibility to
