Reduction of garden height by "Short day treatment” Period of SD Treatment Plants that receive 14 hours of light initiate flowers and have stem lengths characteristic to the varieties natural height. For growers looking to produce compact plants without the use of plant growth regulators, light manipulation can be an effective tool. Field: loamy sandy to sandy humus soils with good drainage and good nutrition levels. Standard fertilization: 80-100 g/m2 of a slow release fertilizer. uses: annual Plants for border, pot and container plants, cut flower production Garden height: 12-28” / 30-75 cm Temperature: Grow at 64-68 °F / 18-20 °C. rudbeckia hirta needs warm temperatures for the growth. Temperatures of 61 °F / 16 °C increase the cultivation time by 3 weeks. Temperatures below 61 °F / 16 °C can be a cause for red coloring of leaves. rudbeckia hirta does not tolerate frost. Crop time: Plug crop: 288 tray 5-6 weeks; 128 tray 6-7 weeks. Flowering pots: 12-21 weeks depending on species and on the season. long days and high light will shorten the production time. Spring: Toto®, Sonora, maYa: ø 15 weeks, Denver Daisy: 14-18 weeks, Prairie Sun, auTumn ColorS: 15- 21 weeks; Summer: Toto®, Sonora, maYa: 12-14 weeks, Denver DaiSY: 12-14 weeks, Prairie Sun, auTumn ColorS: 13-15 weeks Fertilization: moderate fertilization levels are required. Fertilize the crop weekly with 100-150 ppm nitrogen (at 0 kg/m³ slow release fertilizer in substrate), using a potassium balanced fertilizer (n: K2o-ratio: 1:1,5). avoid high ammonium and high nitrogen levels. Prevent magnesium deficiency by applying magnesium sulphate (0,05 %) 1-2 times and in case of iron deficiency (above pH 6.0) apply iron-chelate 1-2 times. Field: Take care of possible iron deficiency and apply iron-chelate1-2 times. n min soil value: approximately 130 g n/m². Seed form: Coated Seed Light: long day plant. For flower initiation long days greater than 13 hr. are required. We recommend somewhere between 14-16 hrs. for best results. Flowering initiation is well timed 2 weeks (Toto®, Sonora and maYa) or 4 weeks (Denver DaiSY, Prairie Sun and Denver DaiSY) after transplantation. Keep light level high, because high light levels improve the plant quality and prevents excessive stem elongation. in winter and in early spring additional assimilation light is required for pot plant and cut flower production. night interruption is possible. a short day period can be used to control the plant growth. 2-5 weeks after transplantation cultivate at short day (10 hr.) conditions for 7-10 days for a compact plant growth. afterwards return to long day conditions (14-16 hrs.) again. For Toto® in 4” / 9 cm pot extend the cultivation of short days to 6-7 weeks until the end of cultivation. exposure: Full sun Sowing method: 1-2 seeds per plug, can be sown directly into final pot. Germination: Stage i and ii: 14-21 days at 68-72 °F / 20-22 °C, Stage iii and iv: 10-14 days at 64-68 °F / 18-20 °C requires light for germination. Before sowing treat substrate with fungicide. Cover seed lightly with vermiculite after sowing. avoid direct sunlight by shading seeds after sowing. Sowing media: media with very low soluble salt levels; pH: 5.8-6.2. Keep soil slightly moist but not wet. Plug culture: media should be slightly less than saturated in Stage i. From Stage ii reduce the soil moisture, but the plug should not dry out. Do not let soluble salt level rise above 0,75 eC. The roots are sensitive to high salt levels in substrate. Start fertilization at 50-75 ppm nitrogen in a well balanced formula. During Stage iii and Stage iv fertilization levels can be increased to 150 ppm. Growing on: if broad casting the seeds into open flats 3-4 weeks after germination transplant 1 plant per cell into plug trays (1x1” / 3x3 cm) or per pot (2-3” / 6-8 cm) and 5-6 weeks later transplant 1-3 plants into a larger pot (4-7” / 10-17 cm) or into a container (3-5 l). Plant cut flowers (frost free) in 10-12” x 12-14” / 25-30 x 30-35 cm space. Media: use a well-drained, growing substrate with 20-30 % clay, 1-1,5 kg/m³ We are proud to be a member ernst Benary Samenzucht GmbH Friedrich-Benary-Weg 1 34346 Hann. münden, Germany Phone: +49 (0) 5541 7009-0 Fax: +49 (0) 5541 7009-20 e-mail: [email protected] www.benary.com Plant Growth Regulators: Seedlings are very responsive to sprays with B-nine (daminozide) at 2,500-5,000 ppm. Bonzi (paclobutrazol) sprays can also be used at 10-20 ppm. light drenches at 1-2 ppm can be used on plants that are well established in the final containers. Sumagic (uniconazol) can also be used. Due to differences in locations produced trial applications are recommended. Contact a Benary representative for exact recommendations. Cultural hints: Keep humidity low and provide good ventilation. avoid over watering and drought stress. Drought stress can be a cause for necrosis of leaf edges. avoid over head irrigation and avoid late day watering to reduce the risk of Botrytis, especially at cooler growing conditions. The cultural recommendations are based on results from trials conducted under Central european conditions. Different conditions in other parts of the world may lead to deviations in results achieved. ernst Benary of america, inc. 2759 Wagner Court, Suite C DeKalb, il 60115-8609, uSa Phone: 815 756 4546 Fax: 815 756 9148 e-mail: [email protected] lT_uS_02/13_1000 // any liability for misprints excluded.
