GIL CATES THEATER AT THE GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE WELCOME TO THE GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE Photo by Jeff Lorch Photography BAD JEWS FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR JOSHUA HARMON KNOWS HOW TO GET OUR ATTENTION. With the title of his beloved comedy, Bad Jews starts a conversation before the audience ever gets into the theater. The question of what makes us good people — good brothers, good sons and daughters, good cousins — all of these ideas are unpacked and explored in this multi-layered play. Ultimately, Harmon has written a play about family dynamics and our place within them, and while his context is a multi-generation Jewish family, he has a gift for finding the universal in the specific. We welcome back director Matt Shakman (Good People, Wait Until Dark) who has cast an extraordinarily gifted foursome of actors, and with designers John Arnone (sets), E.B. Brooks (costumes), Elizabeth Harper (lights), Jonathan Snipes (sound), he has created an environment where familial emotions have room to simmer, to boil and ultimately to explode. As Bad Jews closes out the 2014/2015 season, I thank you for joining us. Whether you are a subscriber, a frequent regular ticket buyer, or a firsttimer, only with your presence and participation does the art continue to thrive. We launched a season that focused on raising a voice, and over the course of this season, you have given extraordinary post-show feedback, you have responded with calls and emails to discuss the work you’ve seen and you have continued to nurture the art by investing sincerely in it. Theater is a collaborative venture, and you are the most vital part of this collaboration. So from the entire Geffen family, thank you for your continued investment in the art of theater. Enjoy the show! Hailed by The New York Times as, “the best comedy of the season,” we know this new play will delight Los Angeles audiences all summer long. Copyright Guardian News & Media Ltd 2015. BAD JEWS DEALS WITH EXTREMES OF NEW YORK JEWISHNESS AND ITS POSTER HAS BEEN BANNED ON THE LONDON UNDERGROUND — YET JOSHUA HARMON’S NEXT PROJECT IS A SONG-AND-DANCE SPECTACULAR It was a small but important change. When New York play Bad Jews first transferred to the UK last year, its writer Joshua Harmon cut a single line from the script. “There’s a line with the phrase, ‘Now, when it’s safer to be Jewish than it ever has been …’” he says. “It might still feel true in New York, but it doesn’t feel that way in Europe right now. They’re doing bag checks outside the theater.” It’s a tense moment for Harmon’s dark comedy to open in London — so tense that London Underground recently banned the play’s posters from its stations because they “may cause widespread or serious offence”. (“I’m not going to weigh in on [the poster] situation,” Harmon wrote in a follow-up email.) The play examines two extremes of New York Jewishness through a tense, one-room comic drama: three cousins, a necklace that belonged to Poppy, their recently deceased grandfather. The necklace has significance not for its monetary value, but because of what it symbolises: Poppy kept it hidden for two years while in a concentration camp, storing it under his tongue. P4 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE The issues at stake in the play reach far beyond the motivations of the characters and their religion. How can the current generation of young people, the play asks, carry forward the memory of such a major historical event that is so recent, so closely connected to their identity, and yet so far from anything they have experienced themselves? Harmon grew up in a conservative Jewish family just north of New York, and the idea for Bad Jews began when he heard people of his age “botch and mispronounce names” of Holocaust victims as part of a commemoration ceremony at his local synagogue. “If I were to get up and talk about when Jews were slaves in Egypt, there isn’t anyone to remember the transition that took place when the people who lived it suddenly weren’t there any more. “But I grew up hearing Holocaust survivors speak, and it’s a profound experience. You hear people for whom English is not a first language, they’re older, and it just feels like this otherworldly thing. When you hear someone who sounds like me talk about it to other people who sound like me, it feels minimised. “There’s this huge responsibility, whether we want it or not. Figuring out how to grapple with that is complicated. When I sat down to write this, I think I had questions, and now I have more questions. They’re big questions, but I don’t have answers. And I’d rather write from that place.” In person, 31-year-old Harmon comes across as friendly, thoughtful and sensitive, and his emergence as a playwright whose work is performed internationally has been a swift one — Bad Jews first opened in a 63-seat Roundabout Underground theater in New York in 2012, then transferred to Roundabout’s 420-seat venue the following year. Entertainment newspaper Variety reported that Bad Jews is the third-most performed modern play this season in the United States, while after a successful run last year in Bath followed by one at London’s St James Theatre, it opens this month at the Arts Theatre in the West End. Bad Jews is also the first play of Harmon’s that has been performed for longer than three nights. Before Bad Jews, Harmon gained experience working for a theatrical agent, as well as putting on small plays and readings, first while at graduate school in Pittsburgh and then when studying at the renowned theatre school Julliard, to which he applied four times before being accepted. In 2010, in order to put on a “one-night only performance” of an earlier play, he successfully raised $700 on Kickstarter. “I had never been produced in any kind of serious way, so I didn’t write Bad Jews with any expectation of a production, let alone the life that this play has taken on,” he says. “I wrote it for myself. When you write for yourself, there are things that you assume to be true that you don’t have to question, and that seems to be the way to go for me. I turn inwards for material.” Harmon is currently in rehearsals for a very different kind of production: the Radio City Spring Spectacular, a huge new musical production in a New York theater that fits 6,000 people. “The scale is just outrageous,” he says with a laugh. “They don’t make shows like this any more. My goal is to make it as true, fun and hopefully moving as it can be. Though this is the first time when anybody has read something I wrote and said, ‘More animals.’ It’s an amazing note. I’ll never get it again.” When the Spectacular opens, Harmon moves into rehearsals for his next play with the Roundabout Theatre, this time about friendship and love, called Significant Other. “It’s about something very small and specific but it also feels epic in scope for me,” he says. “I have a lot of anxiety about the new play and how that will go. I get very anxious about all this stuff. But confidence is death to a play. Each play is a question. You just don’t know.” quincy jones presents lee england jr. ONE NIGHT ONLY! Here is what they had to say about the importance of giving to the arts: Photo by Jordan Strauss “I have to say that George and I feel a little odd about being honored for doing what we are suppose to do. To us, our good fortune is not really for us, it is for society, I always tell people that we are the stewards of society’s money. It is for that reason that we are enthusiastic supporters of Geffen Playhouse because they are bringing theater to communities and schools and they are sparking the imaginations of kids.” — Mellody Hobson “The humanities, unlike math and science that tell us how to do things, the humanities tell us why to do things and there is nothing more important than theater, there is nothing more important than the arts, there is nothing more important than basically giving people a different view of society and hopefully allowing them to stretch their imaginations and their experience with the world — and that is really what Geffen Playhouse does.” — George Lucas “To be able to give a legacy to people — to give people hope in life, of being able to achieve something, of being accepted, of being loved, of being not left behind, but being embraced. You people out there have contributed tonight to make sure that people in this city have a legacy of theater, people that normally don’t have a chance to come to the theater, to partake in something that is dream-like. The theater is like a dream — acting, singing, performing arts, dance, whatever — it is like a dream, it’s ethereal, it takes you away from being who you are and takes you to someplace wonderful.” — Sir Elton John “I want to thank all of you, this amazing theater and all the programs that it supports would not be possible without your support. The outreach program that this theater has, getting into communities and bringing theater into people from all walks of life is just so important, and so crucial to our society.” — David Furnish FIND OUT MORE ABOUT GEFFEN PLAYHOUSE EDUCATION & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMS AND HOW YOU CAN HELP AT GEFFENPLAYHOUSE.COM/EDUCATION PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE P15 Storytellers Anjelica Huston and Samuel L.
