LEAVE NO TRACE - A WAY OF LIFE
As more people use parks and recreation facilities, Leave No Trace (LNT) principals become increasingly critical to the environment. LNT applies
to a backyard or local park (front country camping) as much as it does in the wilderness (back country). As Scouts, we must practice LNT in our
daily life, wherever we go and whatever we are doing. The thoughtless behavior of even one person can spoil the outdoor experience for many
others.
Ideally, all Scouts and Scouters will have ongoing LNT awareness training to improve their consciousness of the environment. Awareness classes
can be from half an hour to all day and are best given at the unit level so they are interactive and directly applicable to the outdoor program. An
on-line LNT Awareness course is also available and can be accessed from http://www.lnt.org/training/index.php.
The Council Conservation Committee is now offering a Leave No Trace (LNT) Trainer course twice a year. This course is required for youth
serving in the new leadership role of Troop LNT Trainer, and for adults who wish to offer LNT awareness courses to their unit or to others. It is a
16 hour course which includes an overnight experience. Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a copy of the current BSA
LNT Trainer Course Manual and the BSA Leave No Trace 101 Course Guide along with other training materials, a LNT Trainer pin, and will be
registered as an LNT Trainer with the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics.
The next LNT Trainer course will be held in Pleasant Hill on October 16-17, 2010. The class will begin at the Council Offices (800 Ellinwood Way)
at 8 am on Saturday morning, and move to Camp RomanOak (also in Pleasant Hill) for a short hike and the overnight experience, ending by noon
on Sunday October 17th. Cost for this course will be $30 and on line registration will be available soon. Youth participants must be at least age 14,
First Class rank, and have Scoutmaster endorsement to participate.

SCOUTS INVITED
TO
FLAG RETIREMENT
CEREMONY
The Commander of American Legion Post
#151, of Pittsburg, has invited all interested
Cub Scout and Boy Scout units to participate
in their Annual Flag Retirement Ceremony.
“We plan to integrate the Scouts into our Honor
Guard, who will perform this Ceremony, which
follows a very rich history with all Veteran
Groups, Scouting and Fire Departments.”
This would be great opportunity to share with
our community. It’s a event where the boys
can understand how the Military plays a very
important role in America, and by thanking all
Veterans that have served to make our Country
a free one.
The ceremony will be held at the American
Legion Post #151, “David A. Solari”, and is
located at 186 E. Leland Rd., Pittsburg.
Troop 247 scouts and scouters recently
completed a 40-mile, week-long backpacking
trek that culminated in reaching the summit of
Mt. Whitney—an elevation of 14,496 feet.
They started on the Cottonwood Pass Trailhead

Fire-up Night (September 16) is one of the
biggest recruitment opportunities of the year
and has always been a success for Chief Solano
District. The fire departments in Fairfield,
Suisun, and TAFB show us their support by
opening their doors to us to use as a sign-up
venue. Flyers will be distributed at schools

FIRE-UP FOR SCOUTING
LOOKING FOR UNIT
REPRESENTATIVES
Things are “popping” as the annual traditional
fundraiser recently began. The next important
date is:
September 17 – Pick up Show and Sell orders
at Camp Herms. A check (post-dated for
November 15) is needed for you to receive the
products.
Contact Carol Stockand, the District “Kernel”
at [email protected] or 863-0597 for
additional information.
DISTRICT DINNER
Come honor your fellow Scouters at our annual
Chief Solano District Dinner on September 18.
This year’s dinner will be held the LDS center
on Travis Blvd. at 6:00 p.m. Additional details
are available at Roundtable or from Helen
Cakus, Chair, at 428-3437.
All units are encouraged to have at least one
representative – plus uniformed youth – at
each location. Contact Sue Odneal at 426-1534
or [email protected] for additional
information.
BE SURE TO REPORT SUMMER
CAMPING EXPERIENCES
Don’t let all those campfires, hikes, and
stargazing nights go unreported – please
remember to update District Executive Mike
Moffat monthly with your units’ camping
hours. Besides the days spent at summer
camps such as Wolfeboro, unit events such as
overnights also count. We know that our units
had great adventures this summer. There are
unit recognitions presented on an annual basis
for units with the most camping hours/days.
COMMISSIONER’S CORNER
September brings the new Scouting year and
a return to a year of Roundtables. We’ll have
some special events and breakouts, including
a district Tiger Cub Rally (October) and a
demonstration “Roundup.”
We can’t emphasize enough how important
Roundtable is to the overall running of the
units. Please make it a goal to have as many
den leaders, ASMs, and key committee
members present as possible.
Yours in Scouting,
Terry Odneal

BERKELEY BOY SCOUT HUT
IS OVER 90 YEARS OLD
Scouts use of the Boy Scout Hut in Berkeley
dates from 1920. The hut was moved from
what is now Martin Luther King Junior High
School (formerly Garfield Junior High School)
to John Hinkel Park in 1938. John Hinkel was a
businessman who let the Boy Scouts camp on
his land in North Berkeley in the early nineteen
hundreds. He donated the land where the park
is located to the City of Berkeley in 1918 on the
condition that they allow Scouts to continue
to use the property. Troop 24 has used the hut
on occasion since 1994 for youth leadership
training and program planning. Pack 30 has
also used it from time to time as a regular
meeting place since 1994. In the 2001 Berkeley
Landmarks Preservation Commission meeting
minutes of January 8, 2001 it was recorded
that the Hut was in terrible condition and that
the Scouts had been locked out of the hut by
the City since the summer of 2000. Troop 19
has been meeting regularly at the hut since at
least September 2004 and taking care of the
hut since then. In September 2005 the Lions
Clubs District 4-C3 made major repairs to the
hut. In October 2009 the Lions Club, Berkeley
Council Member Capitelli, the Alpha Phi
Omega National Service Fraternity chapter
at UC Berkeley and the Friends of 5 Creeks
participated in a major landscaping project at
the park that removed ivy and other non-native
plants.

SCOUTING FOR FOOD
ADVANCEMENT
Be sure to come to Roundtable this month and
get all the information you will need to have
a successful “Scouting for Food” drive. Scott
Kubik will be organizing it again this year.
This year we will be also collecting eye glass
donations for those in need. Many thanks to
Scott for his efforts. You may contact him for
more info., see listings above in the header.
Come and find out information about the new
2010 Cub Scout program changes. There will be
new detailed den meeting plans for all ages of
Cub Scouts, including Webelos Scouts. As den
leaders use these new meeting plans, boys will
naturally earn age-appropriate advancements
as part of regular den activities. Parents can and
should be involved in their son’s advancement,
but more advancement-related activity will be
occurring at den meetings as part of the core
program.

A great time was had by all at the August
roundtable. With hot dogs, potato salad,
chips and yummy Baskin-Robins ice cream
cake (thanks to Bruce and Gerry Dake). Bill
Fee kicked off the popcorn sales with some
fun prizes. Todd Greisen talked about the
“BeAScout” recruitment program. We had
a report from those who attended the 100th
Anniversary National Jamboree in Fort A.P.
Hill Virginia. And Scott Kubik did a great
presentation on the new Cub Scout Program.
If your unit was not represented at the Aug.
RT, then you missed out on a lot of valuable
information.
NEW VENTURING
RT COMMISSIONER
This fall the OA is sponsoring a Native American
theme Fall Camporee. This will include Native
American games, like handball, wrestling,
and spear hoop. There will be gathering of the
Clans (troops) for a feast with Native American
food, before Campfire that night. Did I mention
there are going to be merit badges offered that
are related to Native Americans. Tracking is
the only one this Centennial year.
So mark this on your Calendars October 15-17.
Registration forms are on line at the Marsh
Creek District Yahoo group or Contact Roy
Thomas, see info above.
Roy Thomas, our District Commissioner,
introduced Bill Fee as the new Venturing
Roundtable commissioner and presented him
with his position patch and district epaulets.
So all you Venturer leaders out there, or
wanta’be Venturing leaders, come to the next

Please visit the Muir District site:
www.muirdistrict.org
CUB SCOUT ROUNDTABLE
We meet on the first Thursday of the month at
7:30 pm at the LDS Church on Denkinger Road
behind Safeway in Concord. Roundtable is
a great place to meet and network with fellow
Scouters, hear the latest information about
District events, and continue Leader training.
Questions? Call or email Jennifer Rupert for
info at 925-827-1412 or [email protected]
BOY SCOUT ROUNDTABLE
On Thursday, September 2nd, at 7:45 PM,
we will hold our Muir District Boy Scout
Roundtable. The subject of the meeting is
cold weather camping. We will be having
Keith Gale from the High Adventure Training
team talk about Okpik training. Cold weather
camping can be a lot of fun, yet it requires
special equipment, as well as some additional
training for your adult leaders. It takes careful
preparation and planning to keep your Scouts
safe and warm when you are out and about in
the snow. If this is a subject that interests you,
you do not want to miss this program. See you
there.
MUIR DISTRICT CAMPOREE
Mark your calendars for the Muir District
Camporee. The theme is “Go for the Gold”,
a mining concept with events to match. The
date is October 22-24, 2010. It will be held at
the Sugarloaf Open Space in Walnut Creek. I
am looking for enthusiastic, dedicated Scouts
and Scouters that will help organize the event.
Please contact Jay Sparks at jssparks@astound.
net or 925-300-6244 if you can lend a hand.
SCOUTING FOR FOOD
Guess which event will be here before you
know it: Scouting for Food! This year’s event
will be held during the week of November 1320, 2010. While you are getting organized for
the upcoming year, please don’t forget to select
a Scouting for Food chair. This is the perfect
position for a parent who feels that they are not
ready to commit to a full-time position in your
unit. Information regarding Scouting for Food
will be available at the September and October
Roundtables. Maps and information packets
will be distributed at the October Roundtable,
so it is important to have your Scouting for
Food Chair attend. We hope to make this
event the best one that Muir District has ever
participated in.
ORDER OF THE ARROW
Wek-Wek Apanuc meets on the first Thursday
of each month at 7:00 pm at the LDS Church on
Denkinger Road in Concord. Since we meet
at the same time and place as the Muir District
Roundtable, Scouters are encouraged to attend
Roundtable and at the same time bring their
Arrowmen to the OA meeting.
POPCORN
Why sell popcorn???? Popcorn is the main
fundraiser that our scouting organization
performs each year. Popcorn sales not only
benefit our local packs and troops, but it also
raises a significant amount of money for our
local council. Please plan to participate because
every little bit helps.!
KEY DATES:
September 17 – Show & Sell pickup
November 1 – take orders/prizes due
November 3 – unsold Show & Sell returns
November 19 – take order distribution
There are lots of incentives to sell popcorn
so please make sure your unit popcorn chair
contacts Joe Squeri at 674-6123 if there are any
questions.
WHAT IS
A UNIT COMMISSIONER
A commissioner is a friend, counselor, and
communicator to Unit leaders. They provide a
link between units, the district and the council.
A commissioner is a resource for unit and
chartered organizations: The unit commissioner
maintains a close liason with units, assures
effective unit committees, involves unit leaders
in round tables, and helps select and recruit
unit leaders. If this sounds like something you
would enjoy doing, please contact Courtney
Mizutani. Commissioning can be a lot of fun
and can really make a difference in how a Pack
or Troop operates. If you have a few years
of experience, please consider sharing your
knowledge and enthusiasm with others. We
especially need a few commissioners for Cub
Scout Packs.
Commissioner training will be held at the
Council Service Center on November 13th.

Thank you, everyone, for all of your generosity
to Scouting.
Including the community
campaign we reached $25,699. We have not
reached Napa Valley District “fair share”
goal for the district. We appreciate all units
that helped us reach our current level with our
finance campaign. We are now challenged to
isolate a way to help the district work toward
reaching our $45,000 goal.

Join us in September as we kick-off a new year
of scouting! Come on down and check out the
upcoming events for the year. We will have
our usual announcements then break into our
splits for Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Cub
Scouts: Cub Scout Roundtable is a great place
to meet and network with fellow Scouters, hear
the latest information about District events,
and continue Leader training. We’ll be talking
about recruiting what works, what doesn’t.
We’ll also be talking about Coastal Cleanup
and other community events. Let’s help each

include in it. What other summer activities did
your unit do? Please come to Roundtable! We
will be taking a survey to see what topics you
want to cover this year. See you there!
DAY CAMP
Thanks go to all who helped at this year’s
Day Camp. Once again you helped make it a
wonderful experience for the kids.
JAMBOREE
MDSC took 117 people back east this year for
the Centennial celebration of Boy Scouts in
America at Fort A. P. Hill in Virginia. It has
been a great experience that has widened the
view of many Scouts and Scouters. Friends
have been made from all over the world. These
friendships will help our troops back home as
we have seen different troops in action, both at
camp and during the touring portion of the trip
(six days prior).
NOTES FROM THE CHAIR
Welcome to the new Scouting Year. Hope
everyone has had a great summer and that
all the packs have sent in paperwork for the
Summertime Pack award. Silver Gate District
is looking forward to another year of Scouting
fun and excitement. Coming in October 1-3
is the District Centennial Scoutaganza - I’m
looking forward to seeing all of you there and
don’t for get Roundtable is the first Thursday
of every month at the First United Methodist
church in Vallejo.

participation in the annual Coastal Cleanup.
Please note that this date has been changed
from Sept. 18.
JULY 4 ACTIVITIES
In American Canyon a Boy Scout Pancake
Breakfast that was held. It was a wonderful
event! Many people turned out to support Troop
62 and Scouting in American. Cub Scout Pack
178 provided the hand made place mats and
the hall was decorated with lots of red, white
and blue. Nearly all of the on duty A. C. police
and fire departments attend this breakfast each
year. New this year was the lovely outdoor
patio that was set with tables. It was a rare treat
to be able to enjoy a delicious breakfast outside
on that special day. The cooks, servers and all
the adults and Scouts did an excellent job.
In Vallejo Scouts and Scouters marched in
the July 4 parade honoring the 100th year of
Scouting.
