Rules Corner Question In stroke play, during play of a hole, a competitor asks a fellow-competitor how to play a difficult chip shot and he responds. What is the ruling? See page 14 for the answer. 12 Please call the Golf Shop at70-345-5500, ext. 1. BridgeMill Golf Academy “Our Goal is to Help You Enjoy Your Golf More” Tips From The Pro Eliminate Tension Tension is the killer of the golf swing. If too many things are going through your head, you become tense. When it is your turn to play, all of your thoughts and emotions should be on the golf ball and how you are going to make that ball go to your target. If the image in your mind is all the things not to do, you lose focus on your routine and playing the hole. Be selective in your thinking and put aside distracting thoughts. Talk to your self. Take breaths. Deep breathing promotes relaxation and calms you and will help you bring focus to your shot. You will play with much more ease and freedom. Best wishes for the new year! Tom Losinger, PGA Master Professional Golf Academy – 770-345-5557 [email protected] Use the Winter to Be Better Next Year Whether you do some work at home or take advantage of state-of-the art equipment and facilities we have to offer at the BridgeMill Golf Academy you will be much more pleased with your game in the Spring if you make the commitment to do just that. There is not another facility in the state that has TrackMan, high speed video cameras, SAM Putt Lab, SAM Balance Lab, K-Vest and an indoor capability. If you want to play better golf, BridgeMill is the place to make it happen. SAM Balance Lab at BridgeMill Golf Academy Proper footwork is one of the most underestimated aspects of a good golf swing and quite honestly one of the toughest to accurately diagnose. SAM Balance Lab is a tool used by many top teachers and players to work on improving footwork. Proper footwork leads to better balance, more consistency and more distance. Now who doesn’t want that? 13 Golf Instruction Open to All The Golf Academy is open to the public, and while Golf Members do have certain Academy privileges, non-members also have access to one of the best staff of instructors in the country. From beginner to expert, our teachers would love to help you. For more information or to schedule an appointment please call 770-345-5557. Equipment from Titleist The 2015 models from Titleist are in and they sure do look and feel great. Please stop by the Golf Shop or Golf Academy to check them out. PLEASE do not buy something off the rack from some big box retailer. Let us help you! Contact the Golf Academy at 770-345-5557 or Golf Shop at 770-345-5500, ext. 1. 2014 Junior Academy Golf Program Wow! 2014 was a great year for the BridgeMill Junior Golf Academy! Correct Answer : Both players incur a two stroke penalty. Explanation: Decision 8-1/25 14 Visit our website at bridgemillathleticclub.com LGA News The Ladies Golf Association ended their 2014 season on a high note December 6th with a holiday luncheon at Featherstones Grille. The afternoon was filled with great food, awards and raffles. One additional treat for the afternoon was the scrapbook prepared by Susan Coccari and Paulette Watson which was over flowing with photos and notations of our many GNO’s and tournaments of the year. A special thanks to President, Jean Landmesser and the LGA board of officers who put in many hours behind the scenes for our club. Our Play Date Chair, Belinda Humphrey, awarded the prizes for our Ringer Tournament. This is an ongoing tournament throughout the golf season and participants are in charge of keeping and recording their score for each round and noting it in a special ledger in the ladies locker room. The idea is to better your score with each round. First place gross winner was Tori Askerberg and first place net winner was Molly Maher. Second place gross went to Bev Gilley and second place net was Pat Bauer. Third place both gross and net went to Pam Yagoda. (Winners are pictured below) As is tradition, we presented the 2014 Player of the Year award at the luncheon. This award is presented to the member who has most improved their golf handicap, participates in LGA events and always is available to assist with any LGA activities. Congratulations to Becky Royer, Player of the Year (pictured right)! Becky is so deserving of this award as she truly embodies the spirit of the Ladies Golf Association. This year, I am going to: eat better, go on a strict diet, join the gym, quit smoking, drinking, eating carbs, sugars, soda etc. Even if that makes it through the first few weeks, somehow March rolls around and the newness of these resolutions and the motivation to carry on is lost. Goals are great and important to have. They inspire us to new levels of achievement, make us proud when we reach them, and give something to look forward to each day. Often we are required to set goals at work, short and long term and when achieved we may be rewarded with gifts, money, or praise. Whatever the reward we are driven to do whatever it takes to achieve those goals and receive the prize. Setting a health goal is no different and requires a plan, otherwise we’re just hoping for something to happen. Many times we are ambiguous about our goal, or the goal may seem so big that we’re not sure how to get started. Applying the SMART goal method is a useful tool to help determine exactly what you want and how to achieve it. THE SMART GOAL METHOD: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time-Bound Specific: It is not enough to just say, “I want to lose weight” or even, “I want to lose 25lbs”. The goal must be specific, have meaning and purpose. Here are a few questions to ask yourself in the process. What is it that I want? Why do I want to achieve this goal? What will the outcome be and what will it feel like when I achieve it. How will I get to my goal? Then write down what you want. Intro To Exercise January 12th, 6:30pm Learn proper use of equipment, getting started on an exercise program, options available for your goals and fitness level to help you achieve them at BridgeMill Athletic Club. RSVP to 770-345-2990. Table Tennis Monday & Thursday, 12:30-2:30pm At the Fitness Center Paddles and Balls available or bring your own. All ages welcome. For information, contact 770-345-2990. Hope to see you at the table. Measurable: The goal has to be measurable to track progress . Do you want to lose a specific number of pounds, get to a certain weight, dress size or body fat composition? Also determine what action you will take to reach your goal. Attainable: The goal should feel attainable, and sustainable, one that is a bit of a challenge but doable without feeling overwhelmed. Knowing what you do about yourself and weight loss does 50lbs feel overwhelming? Can the goal be broken down into a smaller goal? Realistic: The goal needs to be realistic. As you become more specific, the goal starts to feel more real but is it realistic ? Will you really walk everyday? Will walking be enough to get you to your goal? Are there other activities that could be added that would be beneficial and fit with the goal. “ Time Bound: A goal needs to have a time frame. Assuming it is January 1st, and knowing that a 1 pound a week weight loss requires a deficit of 3500 calories what kind of time frame feels attainable and realistic to lose 25 lbs. 3 months? 4 months? 6 months? Whatever amount of time feels best is up to you, just put a date on it. ADDITIONAL TIPS Studies have shown that writing a goal down on a piece of paper (do not type it on the computer) can make it feel more real and important. So write your goal down on index cards and place them in many different places where you’ll see it often to help you stay motivated. Set an intention daily for smaller goals (prepare a health y shopping list, review a restaurant food guide to prepare you for dinner out, cook at home one more night a week) that will help you to do whatever it takes to receive the reward of this goal, a healthier, confident, stronger you! 25 Personal Training Individual and group sessions available in single or multiple sessions. Will this be the year that you keep your New Year's Resolution and join our friendly group of women who enjoy helping Cherokee County residents from infants to school age students to adults and seniors? You do not have to live in BridgeMill to join, in fact that will be one of our goals this year to actively engage the surrounding communities to join our group. Congratulations and a huge thank you to Nicole Shippy, BSSL's Volunteer of the 2014 (pictured right) who started out as our Membership VP, led us through Relay for Life, became a wonderful asset on our website and Facebook, initiated our Christmas Tree at RJ Jones Library and is always there to lend a hand whenever it's needed. The returning board for 2015 with the addition of Co-Treasurers: (pictured below to the right) President: Ruth Clark First VP: Susan Gaines Membership VP: Nicole Shippy Secretary: Cheryl Karr Co-Treasurers: Susan Staudt and Arleen Oppenheim Chairman of the Board: Marlyn Patouillet Bring a friend and help us make our 15th year the best year ever. Our first meeting is scheduled for January 15th, 7:00pm at the Terrace. Come meet our returning board and learn about our plans for this year. Don't forget to bring gently used mittens, scarves and hats for the local elementary school to our meeting. For more information on the BridgeMill Sixes Service League visit our website at bssl.org or contact Ruth Clark at [email protected]. The BSSL had so much fun entertaining the residents of the Lodge with Christmas carols on December 10th. I guess we didn't sound that bad because they've already asked us to return next year. 26 Visit the Service League website at www.bssl.org BridgeMill Community Association The BridgeMill Community Association annual dues of $170.00 are due January 15th. Please pay on time and avoid a late fee. A late fee of $25 will be assessed to your account if the dues are not received by January 31st. The Annual Meeting is scheduled for Monday, January 26, 2015 at Liberty Elementary School, 6:15pm - 8:15pm. The candidates running for the board will each be given an opportunity to speak at the annual meeting. Two positions are up for election this year. The candidate bios and annual meeting notices are mailed in early January. Please take the time to read these bios and attend the annual meeting. This is your opportunity to get to know the candidates before voting. Each candidate will serve a two-year term on the board. Mark your calendars and plan on attending! We continue to have problems with on-street parking and other covenant violations. Some of the most common violations currently notated are: • Trash Cans: They should be hidden from view of the street on non collection days • Mailboxes: Ensure they are clean, not dented, rusty, leaning, have numbers or doors missing, are not faded, etc. The onsite office sells at cost all mailbox supplies • Landscape: Prune bushes & trees, remove/replace dead bushes, add fresh pine straw and clean flower beds of encroaching grasses & weeds, regularly apply weed control to turf, address bare areas of yard, if needed. • Boats/Trailers/RV’s: Shall not be stored on property unless within enclosed garage. • Basketball Goals: Can be in driveway, away from street/curb If everyone does their small part then BridgeMill will remain a wonderful place to call home! The Architectural Review Committee meets on the first and third Monday of each month. Most exterior changes (even modifications to the rear yard) require ARC review. If you have questions about the process, please contact the property manager. It can take a couple of weeks for a response to your request, so plan accordingly.
