The Faculty of Appliec
Science at UBC has a lonç
and proud history. It was on€
of the three founding facultie
of the University, and saw
engineering graduates in it
first Class of 1920. We hav€
certainly come a long wa
since then! For over 80 years
the Faculty has created mans
engineers who have gone or
to serve with dedication th€
communities in which the
have lived. Today, the Facult
remains the only engineerinç
school in British ColumbiE
mandated
to
provid€
education and research
across the full range 01
engineering disciplines, and ii
continues to graduate a large
majority of the engineerinç
graduates
in
Britisi’
Columbia.
We are proud to continue the tradition of providing a first rate engineering education to oui
students. Our outstanding reputation arises from the excellent quality of the students thatwE
attract, and from the educational experiences and the special environment provided to them.
Your hard work, involvement, energy and enthusiasm are an important part of this environment,
and we very much appreciate your contributions to the Faculty in this way. All in all, I believe
that your education and experiences at UBC have provided you with the skills, knowledge
and characteristics needed to excel in the engineering profession.
Michael lsaacson
We are witnessing significant changes in engineering practice, including those associated
with globalization, increased competition, information technology, technological advancement,
environmental awareness, and infrastructure renewal. Associated with these changes is a
growing demand for engineers who have a solid grounding in engineering fundamentals, and
at the same time are flexible and articulate, and have complementary skills relating to
teamwork, leadership, management and strategic thinking. I hope that the varied aspects of
your education and experiences at UBC, both formal and informal, have prepared you well to
meet these demands, and will see you leading the way in your profession.
Wherever you go from here, I hope that you will look back and remember your time at UBC as
professionally rewarding and enjoyable. I am confident that we have prepared you well, and
that you will find success in your career and experiences beyond UBC. I wish you every
success in your professional and personal lives. Our engineering alumni are one of UBC’s
most active groups. I encourage you to keep in touch with the friends you have made during
this important chapter of your life, and to maintain close contacts with the Faculty of Applied
Science and the University.
Michael lsaacson
Dean of Applied Science
Ever tried biting off more than you can
chew? That just about describes the
countless hours put into this
wonderful, beautiful, and all amazing
yearbook. The success of this
publication was only possible with the
help of my diligent co-editor, Kal,
Albert, and last year’s Slipstick
Editor, Ian, who passed on the torch
onto me. For this year’s graduates,
good luck and congratulations’ I am
sure you will go out into the world and
make us UBC engineers proud. For
those of you who showed your
wisdom by purchasing this yearbook,
I hope the images in these pages will
remind you of the good times you
have had and of the spirited family
that you have come to know as your
fellow Engineers. Have a good one!
Cheers,
Dave.
Even with past expereince in yearbook
production, shaping the Slipstick into a
new, revolutionary form is, indeed, an
extremely hectic task. Not only did
workload more than tripled and deadlines
shortened by half, but the academic work
level increased dramatically as well...
Nevertheless, I am glad that with Dave
and Albert, we were able to pull the most
difficult time. It’s an interesting experience
and I would like to experience it again.
Kaizer Out
President’s Spew.
What a ride. Leading the UBC Engineers is an experience unlike any other, I’m sure.
Some describe leadership as hauling on the reigns of a horse encouraging the horse
along a path. I would describe it as running like hell, trying to stay in front of the horse
so it doesn’t run you over.
This year saw an excellent executive & group of club presidents ushering in a new era
of cooperation with our Dean in many areas of student life; from tuition allocations to
the development of the Professional Activities Fund.
UBC Engineers are unique & cherish that uniqueness. Somebody once asked me why
we wear bright red jackets & cardigans. Why not a more conservative colour. Simple,
we want to be noticed, we want to be picked out in a crowd. We want to be the
loudest. Be proud of who you are & what you will become.
Our motto: “Work Hard, Play Harder” is reflected in everything we do.
When I flip back through these pages, I’m going to see snap-shots of a different time.
I’ll see pictures of my friends & the great times we had together. I’ll see a group of
people who shared a common bond; pride in their chosen profession, a love for all that
life has to offer & in many cases.., beer.

Since I was the Club Mech Prez for only the first term of this
school year, this is my last duty before I fly off into parts
unknown. (Calgary) This tenn has been a blast, and its all
thanks to the most effective and dedicated group a
megalomaniac could ask for. We started things off with a
bang by throwing TWO consecutive welcome back BBQ’s in
the first week of classes! We then decided to put some work
into the heart of the Club Mech room. Club Mccli’s foosball
table was repaired and looking great so we organized a Mccli
Foos Tourney. Next, we had the Halloween Pumpkin
çing Boat Races. To cap the year off we threw the annual,
legendary Mech Christmas Party. Santa visited to give gifts
to the faculty and staff and there was lots of holiday food and
drink to go around.
Everyone who attended the meetings did an incredible job of
keeping Club Mech going this term and everyone on the
following page deserves a grate deal of credit, but since I’m
only half of the Mech Prez this year, I’ll let the rest be told by
Term Two’s Mech Prez, Robert Baikie.
Hi I’m the Mccli Prez for the 2003 part of the year. I’ve
been helping out throughout the first part of the year. We
had a number of successful E-vents made possible by a lot of
hard-working people. I’m sure that Mech’s second semester
will be as successful with a very strong Mech presence
during E-week and we’ll hopefully retain our title. Judging
from the first semester, we will have a great bunch of people
to make this semester fun and exciting. While I haven’t
been the Prez for long, I’m sure there are lots of people who
will make this year successful and they deserve thanks. You
know who you are.
Thanks,
James C. Boak

Highlights of the year include chmcoming, preparation for the (yet to be

This has ±finitely been an interesting year as students in Electrical and

Greetings All!
What a year it’s been for the ladies of Alpha Omega
Epsilon (A2E), the one and only Professional Engineering
Sorority on campus. With co-op scheduling the way it is, and
graduations happening left and right, we knew we would be a
little short on actives this year, so our campaign of
propaganda... er... publicity began in the summer while some
of our alumni were off partying at convention in New York.
Thanks to strong leadership from all actives, many of
whom hold two or more positions, our whirlwind RUSH
period successfully landed us TEN amazing pledges. Our
meetings are now so impressive in size that we’ve
permanently moved to the CEME lounge for the wonderful
weekly Wednesday get-togethers. Many a visitor to the
lounge has been scared off by our rowdy group, especially
with some of the crazy theme meetings that we’ve been
having! (sundaes are good, but Des dressed up as a sundae is
even better!)
Event-wise we’ve been strong as expected,
participating in many EUS and sporting events such as
CheezeTub, SongfEUSt, Animal Haus, HalloweenBall,
volleyball and longboat. Added to these have been
professional events such as GM info night and the 14 Not
Forgotten Memorial, and added to those have been a flurry of
bake sales and other fundraisers.
As usual, the men of Sigma Phi Delta have provided
us with great support and fun in many joint events. They
“protected” us at SongfEUSt, came to our meetings dressed in
togas, forced Heather to go on The Great Dolphin Trek (with
their paddle) and surprised usat Christmas (ewwww). We
look forward to hockey games, dinners at Da Haus and E
week-ing with them in the near future. Speaking of the future,
we’re gEEring up to kick ass in E-Week and wow you all with
our loveliness at E-Ball. And of course, our T&A night act
and annual Fridge Full O’Beer contest are always highly
anticipated, so watch out!
With great actives and promising pledges, Eta remains
a strong chapter in all ways, and will continue to do so for
years to come.
Cheers,
Donna Chang

fle1isA,
Hey Hey,
It’s been a fun-filled year. Our annual camping
trip was cut shorter than usual due to the domestication of 20
Mile Bay. Incidently when a park patroller threatens to call
the police, don’t bother responding with “Oh yeah, well I’ll
call the army”.
There was no National Sigma Phi Delta
Convention last year (at least none that they invited our
chapter to), so we’ll be raising twice as much hell this
summer in Champaign-Urbana Illinois.
We helped TETRA bjiild a few contraptions to
help the disabled. We intended to help Habitat for Humanity
build more housing in Burnaby, but they’re behind schedule.
It’s a good thing Buttdriver came up with the idea for a Fwat
PRO.
I’m not sure why the police showed up to Open
Hose and not Animal House; but I’m not complaining, and I
hope Green Slime went as well as Animal House (nothing
like writing a year summary 3/4 the way through). I hope I
can get away with my tattos again.
We decided we’d go door to door for the annual
food drive (teaming up with At2E) despite not having the
letter from the food bank. We certainly got more food than
we could have contributed ourselves.
We really kicked ass at E-week this year. Between
us and A2E we had everything covered for a change. It’s too
bad Red Eye Breakfast was cancelled, but at least no one was
arrested. Coming in third place wasn’t easy; even combined
with AOE we’re the smallest competitor. So if you divide our
points by people, you really see the quality of our group.
As if da Hans wasn’t messy enough from E-Week,
we got back from E-Ball to find that our alumni had a party
which seemed to have the theme of making food explode.
We’d never let them back ifthey didn’t own the damn place.
We’re down to three pledges this year, but I’m
pretty sure the fourth will be back next year. For a change it
was scholastic problems instead of being scared off by crazy
drunks. But we’ve never been about numbers, we’re about
being involved, or being drunk, and mostly being involved
while drunk. So if you’re at all interested in those things:
PLEDGE PLEDGE PLEDGE!
How did we accomplish what many clubs did not?
No one can say for sure... but I certainly know what helped:
time management skills such as chugging wine from paper
bags and eating coffee grinds with a glass of maple syrup.
Cheers you bastards,
Hugh ‘Hooch’ Turner
