Hello, Magic City Blues Society!
While we have only one official
Magic City Blues Society event
for the month of March, that
may be a good thing as February
was so action packed. In this
issue, we have reviews and
photographs
of
several
happenings – The International
Blues Challenge in Memphis,
Anders Osborne at Workplay,
and the Riders Harley Davidson
Blues & Bikes show featuring
the 44’s.
The one feature MCBS event for
March is the usual first Friday of
the month open jam at Ranelli’s.
Bring your guitar or harp or
washboard and get your jam on,
March 4th. And while not an
“official” MCBS event, our good
pals at Iron City have booked
another world-class doubleheader on March 24th – Victor
Wainright will be opening for
Samantha Fish on the main
stage. Victor is an old favorite –
Samantha is a new favorite.
Look for a preview of this show
below.
Looking a bit further ahead, say
over the next 60 days or so, lots
of things are on the calendar.
The MCBS will feature the
return of a significant event
from years past – an annual (?)
auction of assorted blues
related items on April 2nd at the
Daniel Day Gallery with music
from Microwave Dave. Susan
Collier, ex-president, ex-board
member, charter member, and
longtime keeper of the archives
of the MCBS has been combing
said archives and her personal
collection of posters / pictures /
autographs to come up with a
treasure chest of items to be
sold to the highest bidder via
live and/or silent auction. The
MCBS used to do this
annually…depending on the
enthusiasm for the resumption
of the event it may become an
annual event again. As we all
know, every single item up for
bidding will be worth AT LEAST
$1,000!!!
Charlie Parr will headline the
first BlueStages event of 2016.
Todd Eckstrom has a preview of
that gig below. As I think
everyone knows, these intimate
events usually feature a solo
performer performing in a local
MCBS’ers home. Bring your own
chair, beverages of your choice,
and $15 to get in the door.
Reserve
a
spot
at
[email protected], and we’ll
let you know a few days
beforehand where the show is
happening.
Other further on down the road
events include Debbie Bond at
Phelan Park #1 on April 17th, Taj
Mahal at the Lyric Theatre on
April 21st, and The Word on
April 22nd at the same spot. And
it’s not too early to be thinking
of the Bob Sykes Blues & BBQ
Festival in Bessemer on May

Live music event
The sophisticated ears of
the powers that be at Iron
City were so impressed
with Samantha Fish’s April
22, 2015 show on the 22nd
Street Stage that they have
specifically booked this
special
engagement
featuring Samantha with
Victor Wainright opening
the show. Fish, a Ruf
Records artist with three
solo recordings to her
name, is a veteran
performer at the ripe age
of 27. Growing up in Kansas
City, she first was attracted
to the country/roots music
of Keith Urban and Sheryl
Crow, before being turned
on to the more guitarcentric recordings of Stevie
Ray Vaughan. Falling under
the influence of another
MCBS favorite in Mike Zito,
she recorded her first two
albums with him, the Blues
Music Award Best New
Artist winning “Runaway”
followed by “Black Wind
Howlin’.” Both recordings,
featuring a slew of wellknown musicians assisting,
including Zito, Yonrico
Scott, Johnny Sansome,
Paul Thorn, and Charlie
Wooten, introduced her as
a
first
class
blues/rock/roots
artist.
Her third recording,
produced by the North
Mississippi All Stars’ Luther
Dickinson, is titled “Wild
Heart.” Released in 2015, it
features
5
original
recordings and assorted
covers.

from
the
same
manufacturer. Over her
two-hour
show,
Fish
focused
primarily
on
original songs, but also
treated us to a few covers,
even closing the show with
Black Sabbath’s War Pigs.”
March 24th at Iron City
has the potential to be one
of the highlights of 2016. I
encourage all MCBS’ers to
come out and enjoy!

To refresh your memory,
here is a bit of my review
from last year’s show: “On
April 22nd, Samantha Fish
hit the 22nd Street Stage
with her power trio to
crank out some blues and
blues-rock. It was my first
time seeing her, and I can
unequivocally state she is
as fine a contemporary
blues musician as exists in
the genre today. Fish is a
Mike Zito protégée, and
you can hear it in her
rootsy music as she wears
her influences on her
sleeve – Zito, the Vaughan
Brothers, and Bonnie Raitt
among others – and see it
in her custom Delaney

Jonny Grave is a guitarist,
songwriter,
singer,
bandleader,
busker,
teacher, musical historian,
and
bluesman
from
Washington, D.C. Growing
up in a very musical family,
Grave was introduced to
the sounds of American
traditional folk music early
on. At age fifteen he found
himself learning slide
guitar techniques from old
blues records, and by
seventeen
he
was
performing them live.
The distinct sound that
Jonny
Grave’s
music
conjures is a resurrection
of sorts—the music of R. L.
Burnside, Mississippi Fred
McDowell,
Robert
Johnson, and Bukka White
all find a way into Grave’s
playing style. His repertoire
of sound is made up of new
arrangements of older
blues tunes and deeply
rooted solid originals.
In 2009, after years of
performing
as
a
solo/acoustic
act,
he
formed a band, and took
the D.C. area by storm with
an electrified, blues-rock
sound. Billed as Jonny
Grave
and
the
Tombstones, they have
played a steady string of
shows at local D.C. clubs.
They maintain a weekly
residency at Madam's
Organ Blues Bar on
Tuesdays upstairs. They
are also currently a part of
the student band program
at Omega Studios, serving
as a model band for the
students to record.
Staying true to his acoustic
roots though, Grave still
performs solo on a regular
basis. He has an ongoing
residency
at
Nanny
O’Brien’s in Cleveland Park
of Washington, D.C. He is
an active participant in the
local folk community,
teaching slide guitar and
blues lessons. He is also the
youngest member of the
Washington Folk Festival
Committee.
Jonny Grave currently has
several releases available
for sale on iTunes and
Amazon.com. The latest
"Live at Ratfeather's" was
recorded at Blue House
Studios in Kensington, MD.
The album includes 9
tracks of all-electric blues,
all recorded live in a single
room
using
an
extraordinarily minimalist
approach. The resulting
sound is blues and rock
going back to the basics.
I first met Jonny when he
played Gip’s Place and
Moe’s in Lakeview in 2009.
I thoroughly enjoyed his
music, his show and his
happy countenance as he
performed his original
songs. I’m sure this will be
a very enjoyable show and
one you won’t want to
miss.
Bring a small folding chair
and your beverages of
choice.

Bluestages april 2016
The Magic City Blues Society is proud to announce that Charlie Parr will be here for a
BlueStages performance on April 10th at 4 p.m. Please sign up at [email protected] and be
sure to note which BlueStages you will be attending. (We think it should be both). The
audience will be treated to an intimate performance at a very comfortable venue. I have seen
Charlie multiple times while living in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and I can say for a fact
that he is the real deal. Charlie is currently on tour in Australia and he will be making a rare
southern tour in April. If you give him a chance you will be hooked just as I am.
Below is the Press kit from Red House Records that is much more eloquent than I will ever be.
Todd Eckstrom
Parr is a folk artist for the new American Dust Bowl, a resonator-ready troubadour
armed with a well-worn satchel of troubled tales that cut to
the heart of a nation mired in fear and in dire need of a roots-music revival.
— Acoustic Guitar
Stumpjumper
(April 28, 2015; Red House Records)
Parr joins Minnesota indie label Red House Records Charlie’s first full-band album - produced in
North Carolina with Phil Cook
Red House Records is proud to announce that songwriter/guitarist CHARLIE PARR has joined its
roster. Parr will be releasing a new studio album, Stumpjumper, on April 28, 2015.
Long a part of the vibrant Duluth, MN, music scene (Low, Trampled by Turtles), Charlie traveled
to North Carolina to record this album with fellow musician Phil Cook (Megafaun, Hiss Golden
Messenger). As well as being the first album Charlie has recorded outside of his native
Minnesota -- he joined Cook and a cast of local players, setting up in an old outbuilding on the
“Down Yonder Farm” in rural North Carolina-- it’s also the first to feature a full band. Percussive
and raw, the 11 songs on Stumpjumper, 10 originals and his version of the venerable murder
ballad, “Delia,” could be lost field recordings from another era. His blistering picking -- he
switches between acoustic guitar, dobro and banjo -- and keening, cut-through-the crowd
vocals resonate with a conviction that runs deep and true. It's the music of a self-taught
guitarist and banjo player who grew up listening to his dad's recordings of America's musical
founding fathers, including Charley Patton and Lightnin' Hopkins, Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly.
His heartfelt and plaintive original folk blues and traditional spirituals don't strive for
authenticity, they are authentic.
Parr’s inspiration is drawn from the alternately fertile and frozen soil of Minnesota; his songs
exude a Midwestern sensibility and humility. Parr grew up in the Hormel meatpacking city of
Austin, MN (population 25,000) where most of the world's favorite tinned meat, Spam, is still
manufactured. The combination of growing up with both of his parents working proud union
jobs in an industrial meat factory and his largely rural environment had a broad impact on Parr.
"Every morning you'd hear the [factory] whistles blow, when I was a kid they had the
stockyards and animals there, so you were surrounded by this atmosphere," Parr says. Out the
back door were soybean fields, as far as the eye could see. "As a kid I thought it was kind of
boring, but now I go and visit my mom and I think it's the most beautiful landscape there is."
Most of his recordings to date have eschewed typical studio settings; he’s recorded in
warehouses, garages, basements and storefronts, usually on vintage equipment, which gives his
work the historic feel of field recordings. It's not because he wants to sound like he was
discovered 75 years ago by Alan Lomax, it’s because most modern recording studios make the
reticent and self-effacing Parr feel uncomfortable. After a health scare a few years back, he lives
very simply, no alcohol and a vegan diet, often cooking up his rice and beans on his engine
manifold on the lonely, cross-country drives. He doesn’t go in much for fashion and frills and
lives simply on the road, usually sleeping in his car.
The songs are inspired by family members, the Bible, overheard conversations and places in his
life. A native Minnesotan, he draws sustenance from the surprisingly large, thriving and
mutually supportive music scene of Duluth: Parr's 2011 album of traditional songs, Keep Your
Hands on the Plow, features locals including Charlie's wife, Emily Parr, old-timey banjo/fiddle
band Four Mile Portage and Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker of Low.
The title track finds Charlie tapping into his childhood. “Songs aren't normally very
autobiographical for me, they're more like stories, but this one is different,” he says. “I can see
a 1966 International Harvester pickup truck with no hood and four snow tires, breaking field
road land-speed records on my way to my job in a filling station.”
Tracks include “Evil Companion,” “Frank Miller Blues” (Death visits Frank to take him home but
Frank needs to finish his chores and so Death helps out. Frank's wife is pissed) and “Remember
Me If I Forget” which Parr dedicates to his Aunt Mid. “She was a tough customer ... also wise,
sensitive, and hilariously funny. She stomped the terra, as they say.”
“Empty Out Your Pockets” is a song Parr describes as “another angry hymn from me.”
“All of the ones I've written so far seem to rely on God being a kind of big brother who shows
up one day after you've been getting your ass kicked all over town by bullies and he takes care
of business. I know, it's juvenile, but take a close look at a lot of legitimate hymns - ‘when I die
I'm gonna tell God what you did to me’ comes to mind.”
Quiet and thoughtful, Parr always includes a few traditional songs of the hard life and the
hereafter in his live sets. Such music isn't necessarily rooted in the Methodist church in which
he grew up. "It was more like, let's get the service over quick so we can get downstairs and
drink coffee and have pie!"
But faith, though undefined, underlines all of Charlie's music, both in the listening, the covering,
the writing and performing. For more information on Charlie, go to
http://www.charlieparr.com.
A selection of press:
"The native Minnesotan’s style can best be described as new music from an older time –
sometimes dark and desolate, sometimes raucous and danceable." - Dan Forte (Vintage Guitar)
“Parr may have been born during the Nixon era, but you can taste the grit of the Dust Bowl in
his music.” - Dusted
“five seconds in front of Charlie Parr and you know you’re dealing with the real thing.” - Jim
Beckman (KEXP)
“John Fahey described the music he collected on American Primitive Vol. 1 as ‘made under the
influence of enthusiasm.’ Charlie Parr’s recordings, which make splendid companions to Fahey’s
anthology, are similarly enthusiastic.”- Popmatters
“In my humble opinion, Parr is one of the top voices in modern American folk music.” Rhapsody
"One of that dwindling band of living folk musicians with truly original voices and an approach
that really isn't a direct derivative of anything that came before." - Maverick Magazine
“With his custom, unique tunings played on a resonator, Charlie Parr delivers a sound that is
both full, and ambitiouslystripped-down to the very root of primitive American music.” - Saving
Country Music
"Sometimes it feels like Charlie Parr is already dead. Maybe it's because his recordings sound
older than dirt and twice as gritty, or it could be his intrinsic obsession with mortality ... his
music is just plain haunting." - Missoula Independent
“Folk music has a long, storied past in Minnesota... Among the current crop of roots-style
pickers, Charlie Parr has sailed above as a performer for over a decade now.” - City Pages
"Parr is scruffy and uncomfortable looking, with a longish beard and balding head. He dropped
out of high school in the 1980s, but he looks older than that. He’s pathologically deadpan in his
delivery of in between song banter." – Lucy Steigerwald (The Stag Blog)
Live music review
Longtime Birmingham and
Magic City Blues Society
favorite Anders Osborne
made a return appearance
at Workplay on Feb 12th.
Playing to a near capacity
crowd, Osborne delivered
a two hour set featuring a
wide variety of mostly
original songs from his
many solo recordings.
After an hour-long intro set
from Amy Helm (daughter
of Levon) that was more
rootsy than bluesy, Anders
and his 5-piece band
immediately increased the
energy and enthusiasm of
the crowd with “Echoes of
My Sins” to start his show.
Always one to share the
stage with his band-mates,
Osborne allowed lead
guitarist Eric McFadden a
lot of the spotlight
throughout the show.
While Anders is a unique
and original guitarist who
took plenty of solos
throughout the night, the
strongest aspects of his
performance
are
the
singing,
songwriting,
composition of songs, and
overall leadership of a
group of tremendously
talented musicians. So
playing lead/2nd guitar in
the Anders Osborne band
has got to be a great gig. In
addition to McFadden, the
band featured Danny
Eisenberg on keyboards
and organ, Brady Blade on
drums,
and
the
incomparable
Carl
Dufrasne, aka, the Bayou
Buddha, on bass.
So the band blasted
through about 8 of Anders’
songs,
including
new
favorite “Windows” and
old favorite “Pleasin You”
before a two song acoustic
break featuring just Anders
on guitar and McFadden on
mandolin. The beautiful
“Higher Ground” was
followed by the Grateful
Dead’s “Friend of the
Devil” featuring most of
the entire crowd on vocals
during the chorus.
The highlight of the show,
perhaps, was a blistering
rocking heavy version of
“On the Road to Charlie
Parker” that ended the
show, less the one song
encore of “Move Back to
Mississippi.” The crowd at
this point, very, very few of
whom had cut out early,
was grooving, dancing and
singing along, ready to
stick around for another
hour or two. Alas, no more.
But in a not too uncommon
occurrence
from
the
musicians we love and
support, Anders was out
front not five minutes postshow, signing autographs
and chatting it up with his
fans and admirers. All in all
it
was
a
fantastic,
memorable show, certainly
one to rank among the best
local shows of the year.

riders HD event review
The MCBS would like to thank everybody that made our second event
at the Riders Harley Davidson Dealer in Trussvile such a great success.
The folks at Harley are so easy to work with and their venue is custom
made for mixing with friends, dancing to some blues and tipping a few.
We look forward to a long and happy association with these folks. We
would also like to thank Laura Vendetti from the Gulfcoast Blues
Society for turning us onto such a great band as the 44’s out of Los
Angles, a hard working blues band if I ever met one.
A very rare photo of all around great guy
Paul, drinking a beer.
Our merchandize ladies, Cabbie & Ty.
The purveyors of great BBQ.
The 44’s
2 other guys more dedicated to the blues
would be very hard to find.
Please support our sponsors,
They are great people that help us keep the
music playing.
