A little corner of France
in the Mozambique Channel
Mayotte is located at the northern entrance of the Mozambique
Channel, between 45°20 longitude east and 12° and 13° latitude
south. Situated midway between Madagascar and the African coast,
Mayotte is approximately 1,500 km from Réunion Island and
10,000 km from Paris.
Geographically, Mayotte is characterised by its gentle terrain. Its
highest peak, Mont Bénara, reaches 653 m. Ancient volcanic activity
has left its mark here, particularly in the form of a crater which is
today occupied by Lake Dziani on the island of Petite Terre.

An equatorial climate
Mayotte includes
17 districts, of which
2 are located
on Petite Terre
and 15 on Grande Terre.
Shielded from the easterly trade winds by
Madagascar, Mayotte has a tropical maritime
climate with two seasons :
a dry and temperate season lasting from May to
October and a hot or rainy season from December to April, when the island is drenched by the
monsoons arriving from the north-west. Average temperatures are 27°C from December to
March and 24°C from May to September.
Rainfall can range from 1000 mm per year
in the south to 2000 mm in the centre of the
island. The temperature of the lagoon remains
pleasantly mild all year round.
5
A place in history
The earliest traces of the island date back to
the 8th century. The first humans to arrive here
are believed to have been the Bantus from East
Africa followed by the Swahilis. In the ninth century, the first Arab and Persian traders landed
on the island, bringing Islam with them. In the
16th century, the Dutch arrived followed by the
British and later the French in the 17th century.
The 18th century was a time of war. Sultan
Andriantsouly transferred Mayotte to France in
1841. Slavery was abolished in 1846.
The Comoro Islands, of which Mayotte is a part,
became a «Territoire d’Outre-Mer» (Overseas
Territory) in 1946 and obtained their independence. Only the Mahoran population chose to
remain French, and in 1976 the island became a
local authority of the French republic.
Mayotte, the 101st French département
In line with the clear wishes of the population expressed during the referendum of
March 29, 2009 (with the «Yes» camp gaining more than 95% of the vote), Mayotte
officially became the 101st French département (≈ county) on March 31, 2011. This new
status of «département» marks the culmination of a 50-year campaign waged by the
people of Mayotte spanning several generations.
Today, the lengthy process which will see this pearl of the Indian Ocean becoming a fully-fledged French département has only begun. According to the «départementalisation
pact» approved in a vote by Mayotte’s elected representatives, it will take the island 25
years to catch up economically and socially with the other overseas départements. Several stages have already been completed including the transfer of executive power from
the Préfecture to the Conseil Général (area council) in 2004, or the banning of polygamy
in 2007.
In 2012, several projects have been initiated including the introduction of welfare benefits at 25% of the standard rate. The year 2014 will see the application of local general
taxation including the housing tax and rental property tax, in addition to Mayotte’s
acquisition of the status of France’s fifth «outermost region».

climate and medical facilities and health identical to
those in mainland France.
The largest Overseas Natural Marine
Park and the second-lar-
gest Marine Park in France.
The Parc Marin de Mayotte
(Mayotte Marine Park) was
officially established in January 2010. Mayotte aims to
make the island a «centre of

Feminine beauty
With their multicoloured salouvas, hand worked
gold jewellery, their hands decorated with henna,
the omnipresent mzinzano, warm smiles and a relaxing nonchalance… women are one of the island’s
key strengths. Proud of their matrilineal tradition,
they pass on the family heritage, the secrets of beauty, cooking, day-to-day life and education through
an oral tradition which is still very much alive here.
Mahoran cuisine
Discover the originality of the Mahoran culinary
arts. Sample Mahoran fast-food at the «Mamas
brochetti», where grilled kebabs and mabawas
are served with chaoula (a plate of fried vegetables, with cassava, bananas and breadfruit). A
tasty combination of traditional African, Arabic
and Madagascan cuisine making extensive use
of fish, green bananas, white rice and cassava. A
welcome surprise is the skilful combination of
spices, including pepper and salt from Mayotte,
cloves, cinnamon and even vanilla sauce from
the island, or mouth-watering dishes flavoured
with ylang-ylang.

Echoes of the past
Here, the local guides will thrill you
with legends from the island’s oral
tradition, as they take you to discover
the traces of its past, a past characterised by sugar production, pirates, traders from the French East India Company or the island’s shirazian sultans!
Archaeology has barely scratched the
surface here and a large number of
sites are still waiting to be preserved,
restored and discovered.
Don’t miss the following attractions
(among others) :
• The amazing 500 year-old mosques of
Polé and Tsingoni
• The sugar factories at Hajangoua or
Dzoumogné
• The age-old salt gathering activities at
Bandrélé…
Daily life
As you head off down the beaten track, life in the villages
offers you a taste of genuine local traditions, including a
mixture of modernity and authenticity, where children and
young people keep the local customs alive just like the
older generations with street games, tyre racing, neighbourhood life, Koranic songs, small market stalls, washing
drying on the grass or zebus and goats wandering around.

The Mayotte Marine Park …
The largest Overseas Natural Marine Park and
the second-largest Marine Park in France
The Mayotte Nature Park contributes significantly to our knowledge
of the area’s marine heritage, to its protection and to the sustainable development of maritime activities. The incredible richness and
diversity of Mayotte’s lagoon offers a real potential for economic
development, job opportunities and the possibility for environmentally friendly marine activities. This is a key asset, and a new tourism
«showcase» for the region, unspoiled by mass tourism.

Diving & snorkelling in total safety
The «S-Pass» (Passe en «S»)
As the main feature of Mayotte’s lagoon, the «S-Pass» or Longogori Pass located on
Mayotte’s eastern barrier shares the Hajangua and Pamandzi reefs for around 4 km. The
«S-Pass» is a marine nature reserve with coral-rich depths of an extraordinary beauty and
an immense diversity. This is a favourite site for divers and photographers.
The «boat-pass»
(Passe bateau)
A key site in the south-west of the lagoon,
the «boat-pass» is famous for its undersea
drop spanning two levels and reaching to a
depth of up to 80 m. Rich in pelagic species,
here we find skate and often hammerhead
sharks.
The « Prévoyante »
A coral clump located in the very heart of the lagoon in the
northeast of the island, the prévoyante is perfect for a spot of
snorkelling. When snorkelling, the abundant coral offers an unforgettable sight at depths of between 1 and 10 metres.
The small islands to the north
On the eastern part of these two small islands
linked by an amazing sandbank, we find an
impressive coral field and a huge variety of
small, multicoloured fish. A superb site for
snorkelling!
Numerous other sites can be found all around Mayotte’s lagoon, including
the «tombant des aviateurs» (the airman’s drop) and «la cheminée» (the chimney).
They feature a host of faults which can reach down several dozen metres!
The shipwrecks of the last century also lie brooding on the floor of the lagoon.

through traditional vanilla fields. During this hike
you can also discover the processing of green vanilla pods at the vanilla co-operative.
Bouéni’s « Badland Trail » *
Set off to discover the badlands situated on the
Bouéni hillsides. Between the rocky blocks and
the small lake with its water lilies, a splendid view
across the Bay of Bouéni awaits you.
The « Turtle Trail »
at the Saziley reserve *
Saziley is the kingdom of the turtles. Signposts
featuring small turtle symbols will guide you to the
marine turtles’ favourite laying beaches, through
the well-preserved estate of the Conservatoire du
Littoral (Coastal Protection Agency).
The «Ylang-Ylang Trail»
of Dzoumogné *
A new fragrance and a new trail… Discover the
ylang-ylang and its sweet fragrance. Its flower,
which is one of the symbols of Mayotte, provides
an essential oil used in the production of several
major perfumes.
* Source Topo Guide : «l’île de Mayotte à pieds.»
Enjoy a hike in the very heart
of the island where you can
sample the fragrance of ylangylang and vanilla, etc.

« Must-see » sites and trips
The laying of turtle eggs at
Moya
Mayotte is a favourite site for marine turtles
who come here to lay. In rhythm with the
tides, they wander up onto beaches such as
«Moya» beach to lay their eggs, where our
environmental wardens will accompany you
and explain all you need to know in order to
approach and observe them.
Whale & dolphin spotting safaris
Mayotte’s lagoon is one of the best places to
see humpback whales from July to November
and a large number of dolphins all year round.
You can approach and observe these cetaceans in complete safety. Excitement guaranteed!
Discover the mangrove forests
by kayak
An ocean and land-based forest, the mangrove is a fascinating environment and home
to a rich and diverse range of fauna and flora.
There is no better way to discover this fragile
environment with its many species of endemic birds than by kayak.
The Coconi Botanical Garden
A former agricultural estate dating back to
colonial times, this botanical garden has a surface area of 2 hectares and includes hundreds
of varieties of plant life. Splendid orchids and
numerous endemic species are grown at this
outstanding site. Visitors will be left breathless
by the explosion of colours and fragrances
awaiting them here.
The ruins of the sugar factories
The Mahoran sugar industry, which thrived
here in the 19th century has left behind traces
of its proud past in numerous villages around
the island. The village of Hajangua, in one of
Mayotte’s oldest estates, includes numerous
remains such as the huge chimney visible from
the main highway.

ALAMANDAS BOAT
In order to help you visit the finest lagoon in the
Indian Ocean, on October 1, 2011 the company
ALAMANDAS BOAT acquired the luxury catamaran ALAMANDAS BOAT. This vessel, a LAGOON
450 with a surface area of approximately 120
m2, left the factory in July 2011, and is the only
one operating in the Indian Ocean. It comprises
a large lounge with huge, ultra-comfy sofas,
picture windows offering a 360° view and a
solarium. This boat has been designed down to
the last detail for maximum comfort at sea.

Undersea viewing
The ideal way to discover the ocean depths in
total safety, this glass-bottomed boat offers a
panoramic view of the marine fauna and flora.
Two companies propose
half-day or full-day boat trips :
27
L’Aquarium
Lagon Aventure’s glass-bottomed boat the Aquarium is a vessel designed for viewing the undersea
depths, the dolphins, whales and all other kinds
of fish. This is the only undersea viewing boat in
Mayotte approved by the Maritime Affairs Department for observing and admiring mammals and cetaceans in their underwater environment. It is also
used to view the reefs and their many inhabitants
including the fish and turtles, etc. Always passionate
and enthusiastic about their work, Lagon Aventure’s
eco-guides ensure that you enjoy an unforgettable boat trip. Outings are organised every day on a
daily or half-daily basis including undersea viewing,
dolphins, whales according to the time of year, the
small islands with their white sandy beaches, swimming with dolphins and a meal break at midday on
a beautiful tropical beach.

L’Aquavision
Equipped with six extra-large windows,
the Aquavision provides a panoramic view
of the coral and multi-coloured fish to be
seen around the reefs of Mayotte’s Lagoon.
Thanks to the Aquavision, you can see how
the turtles and dolphins live in their natural
environment. Another very original feature of
this boat is the possibility to see what’s going
on beneath the waves at night: Spotlights
built into the hull light up the ocean depths
at night, enabling you to safely discover predators such as the red lionfish or moray eels.
Excitement guaranteed! Trips last a half-day
or a full day including the discovery of the
cetaceans, the small islands and the reefs.
Night-time outings by moonlight.

Thanks to the watersports centre, the hotel provides a
number of free activities including windsurfing, kayaking, pedal boats or skin diving (with flippers, mask and
snorkel) to discover the coral reef’s undersea drop from
the hotel beach.
paid Services
Next, you can take advantage of other exciting activities
such as scuba diving, trips out to sea to discover the
neighbouring small islands and walking trips around
the island such as the «Fragrance Trail».
the bars
location
The Sakouli hotel is situated in a haven of peace on
the southern side of the island of Mayotte. Located
opposite the lagoon protected by its coral reef, its long
sandy beach is simply perfect for relaxing and lounging. The hotel’s tropical grounds feature exotic plant
varieties and tropical fragrances including: Lady of the
Night, ylang-ylang, silk trees, frangipani trees, bougainvillaea and palm trees. The gardens are also a popular
playground for the ornamental birds and lemurs, much
to the delight of our guests!
accommodation
The Sakouli proposes 30 extremely comfortable air-conditioned bungalows each with a private terrace looking
out onto the lagoon and the small island of Bandrelé.
Standard bedrooms
10 “Standard” bungalows with a double bed and lounge
area.
Family Bungalows
20 “Family” Bungalows which are more spacious with
two bedrooms and a lounge area. Additionally, our bungalows are equipped with television, satellite channel
package and telephone, an Internet connection point
and a safe. The bungalows are decorated with a subtle
mixture of wood and fabric. At any time of day you can
have any of the full range of cocktails from our drinks
menu delivered to your door by room service.
When it comes to bars, you have the choice of two
welcoming establishments: the swimming pool bar for
the mornings and afternoons and the restaurant bar in
the evening, which welcomes you for an aperitif and
proposes a fresh fruit cocktail when you arrive. You can
also discover the traditional cocktails and each evening
the barman is delighted to bring you his suggested
“drink of the day”…
the Restaurant
The gourmet restaurant overlooks the lagoon, offering
a magnificent view over the small island of Bandrélé,
the coral reef and the Ilot de Sable Blanc. The dishes
proposed by the French chef Eric Hassan (Madagascan)
include an imaginative menu of light meals to help you
discover some of the island’s finest products and the
many tastes of Mayotte, in addition to a superb wine list.

To get your mouth watering, here is just a small sample of wh
on the lagoon island…
Condiments
Rougail, Katshumbra or tsari are condiments
or seasonings served separately along with a
meal.
The main ingredient in rougail is tomatoes
chopped into small pieces. Among other
things, a little spicy pepper is added.
Katshumbra is made using onions and spicy
pepper. This spicy dish is preserved in lemon
juice, vinegar and oil.
Tchari is a skilful mixture of tomatoes or green
papayas and tamarind cooked with
onions, pepper and cumin.

All of these specialities are experiencing stiff
competition from the «Mamas brochettis».
Definitely well worth a visit during your stay
in Mayotte, the Mamas brochettis are small
improvised eateries which you will often find
on the pavements, where you can sample delicious meat or fish kebabs accompanied by
bananas, cassava or fried breadfruit. The mabawas are delicately seasoned grilled chicken
wings, popular with young and old alike!

Coconut
h a distinctly Mahoran flaer, etc.
hat you can expect to taste
Coconut milk is used as a basic ingredient in Mahoran cuisine. It is prepared
using the flesh of the coconut. When
grated, the flesh is placed in a filter (difu)
or cloth. It is then pressed by hand to
extract the milk. This milk is used to
prepare meat, fish, rice, papayas, bananas, pumpkins and aubergines or brèdes
(the leaves of several plants cooked in
leaf form or ground up), and of course
desserts.
Other specialities
Kakamoku: a soup made with fish, tomatoes, lemon, and peppers. Served with
green bananas or rice.
Pilao: A sort of local paella made with rice
flavoured with curcuma, meat, cinnamon
and tomato.
Samosas: small meat or fish fritters, often
quite spicy, and made using flour dough
(small crispy snacks). The samosas are made
during festivals and festivities or following
invitations.
The Mataba
A Madagascan-inspired recipe comprised of cassava leaves cooked in
garlic. This dish is served with meat or
fish and coconut milk. It is accompanied with rice and with a spicy sauce
according to taste.
Pastries
Chiefly served for celebrations and parties, pastries are
available in a huge range of traditional varieties, including: bankora, boitamou, haloua, karara and zalbia, etc.
Some cakes are made using hunga (rice softened in cold
water, ground, and then sieved several times until a flour
is obtained).
Spices…. grown in Mayotte !
Cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper, ginger, clove, peppers,
saffron, thyme, etc. …all grown in Mayotte. These spices
are key ingredients when preparing local recipes. Most of
these spices can be found on the market stalls and in the
bush villages as well as on the main market in Mamoudzou.

Basketry
Whether produced from palm fibre, creeper,
bamboo or raffia, Mahoran basketry products
take the form of baskets but also hats or mats
(a vital accessory for anyone looking to spend
time on the beach).
THE Sada HAT
Ideal and extremely effective for sun protection, the Sada hat is perhaps the most «typical» Mahoran accessory.

Embroidery
Introduced by nuns in Madagascar before
arriving in Mayotte, the term «Récélé» is a
shortened creole form of the word Richelieu,
referring to the embroidery technique known
as point Richelieu. The Mahoran women produce superb tablecloths, towels and curtains
for interior decoration.
You can obtain whatever you’re looking for
when it comes to arts, crafts or artistic designs, whether you have your heart set on a
model of a dhow, an item of jewellery or a
painting. However, you need to really know
what you’re looking for and order it well in
advance.
Jewellery
Gold and silver are worked just about everywhere on the island, but most particularly
in the village of Sada. T
he ylang-ylang flower remains the most
sought-after pattern.
Carved wood
Woodcarving is a technique imported from the
neighbouring island of Anjouan. From small items
such as caskets, dhows, pirogue boats and kitchen
utensils to impressive sculptures, including furniture or monumental doors, the local craftsmen are
always proud to demonstrate their know-how.
THE M’raha GAME
The game board for the M’raha game is cut and
carved from an attractive heavy wood variety (red
wood types). The game is composed of a two-part
box linked by hinges with 16 holes drilled in each
side and 64 M’so seeds.
