General Information
Location
Transportation and Directions
Wilmington is located on the Cape Fear River in North
Carolina’s southeastern coastal plain, about ten miles from
the Atlantic Ocean. Geologically, the area is dominated by
a basement structure known as the Cape Fear Arch. Nearby
exposures of Cretaceous through Holocene strata along the
banks of the Cape Fear River and in numerous quarries provide a rich environment for geological and paleontological
studies. In addition, nearby Quaternary barrier island complexes provide an outstanding natural laboratory for studying modern coastal processes, including the environmental
effects of hurricanes, sea-level rise, and coastal development.
The major mineral resources in the area are sand, gravel, and
limestone used in the production of cement as aggregate.
The region has been a continuous source of agricultural and
construction grade limestone for at least two hundred years.
In fact, Charles Lyell visited Wilmington in 1842 to study the
so-called “Castle Hayne Limestone” exposed in quarries and
river banks in the region.
The lower Cape Fear region has a long and rich history
of European settlement, and the region appears on maps dating from the early 1500s. Giovanni da Verrazano, the first
known European explorer to arrive in the lower Cape Fear
region in 1524 reported encounters with “friendly natives,”
and described a land “as pleasant and delectable to behold,
as is possible to imagine.” However, over the next 180 years,
several attempts to permanently settle the area, including
the English Charles Towne settlement (1664–1667) on the
western side of the river in Brunswick County failed, largely
as a result of the treacherous shoal waters that surrounded
the entrance to the river. These same treacherous waters
made the region a notorious haven for pirates during this
same period. During the early 1700s, many people from New
England where younger sons could not inherit land, and from
South Carolina where taxes were higher, settled in the area.
The city of Wilmington situated on bluffs along the eastern
side of the river and named for Spencer Compton, the Earl
of Wilmington, was incorporated in 1739. By 1840 it had
become the largest city in North Carolina. After the Civil
War the city fell on hard times, and unfortunately may be best
known for the infamous race riot of 1898.
Today the population of the city of Wilmington is a little
over 100,000, and the Wilmington Metropolitan Area has a
population of nearly 355,000. The area is known for its mild
sub-tropical climate, beautiful white sand beaches, outstanding water sports and fishing, the film industry, historic homes,
and azaleas. We hope you enjoy your visit.
Wilmington International Airport (ILM) is served by
Delta Airlines, U S Airways, and Allegiant airlines. Direct
flights are available to/from Atlanta (ALT), Charlotte (CLT),
Orlando (SFB), Philadelphia (PHL) and New York (LGA).
The Hilton Wilmington Riverside is three miles from the
airport. The Hilton hotel provides complimentary airport
shuttles for registered guests, and taxis and limousine services
are also available.

Keynote Address
“One person’s perspective on the use of sound geologic
principles in natural resource stewardship.” William G. Ross,
Jr., former Secretary of the NC Department of Environment
and Natural Resources. Thursday, 24 March, 6–7 p.m., in the
WCC, Salon A-B.
William G. Ross, Jr., was
appointed a visiting scholar at
Duke University in 2009 and holds
a joint appointment in the Duke
Comprehensive Cancer Center
and the Nicholas School of the
Environment. His work focuses
on the development of regulatory
policies on cancer-causing environmental factors. Ross is a native
of Marion, North Carolina and an
attorney specializing in environmental law. Prior to his appointment at Duke, he was the longest
serving secretary of the NC Department of Environment and
Natural Resources. As secretary, Ross was the chief environmental protection, preservation and advocate for sciencebased environmental decision making in North Carolina.
From 2001 to 2009, Ross faced a number of issues with an
earth science component — shoreline erosion, drought,
underground storage tanks, aquifer protection and landslides.
During that time, he was active in promoting geoscience
research in support of public policy.
For many years Ross has been active in organizations
dedicated to natural resource conservation and environmental
protection throughout North Carolina, including The Nature
Conservancy, the Guilford County Parks and Recreation
Committee, the Piedmont Land Conservancy, the Raleigh
Greenway Commission, and the Environmental Education
Fund. Before serving as secretary, he was the department’s
general counsel and an active environmental attorney. He
knows what geologists do and how their observations and
analysis can make the world safer and more sustainable.
