Let the Rebuilding
Begin!
By Willie Altenburg
A.V.P., Beef Marketing
R
ecord prices have signaled to the cow calf industry the
rebuilding phase of the cattle cycle has begun. I realize
some of the country continues to experience drought,
and Asian markets have been closed in recent times with some
mixed signals of reopening. Yet, record high prices still remain
at all levels of the industry, mostly due to the increased demand
of our product...Beef!
Due to record prices, cow calf producers have begun to rebuild their cowherds
by saving more replacements females to breed. If a producer is going to increase
his cowherd in quantity, why not also increase in quality? We have dedicated
this issue of Beef Horizons to the maternal aspect of using high genetic merit,
well-proven A.I. sires to rebuild a cow herd. At Genex, we put an emphasis not
only on the sire, but on the dam, sisters, daughters and the entire cow family.
We know our members & customers do too. When cattlemen purchase semen,
they want to know research has been done on the maternal side of a sire, and at
Genex we take that very seriously.
Please review our offerings, especially the bulls designed to make long-lasting,
profitable females to put back in your herd. Remember, there are calving
ease bulls that can make outstanding replacement females. Producers can no
longer afford to use just any calving ease sire. Thanks to the progeny testing
resulting in proven A.I. sires, we now have bulls that calve easily and make
outstanding replacements.
Feel free to contact us, whether to discuss our sire line-up or to find the name
of your local Genex representative. We have locally trained personnel committed
to customer satisfaction and who offer the industry’s best “chute-side” service,
helping you synchronize and inseminate your heifers and cows. Call us...we can
help you build a better cowherd! ■

Coast to Coast All Producers Can
Gain From Membership
T
he 2006 national membership program is now a reality. The
need for change never changes, and membership expansion
is just the next step in the evolution of Genex Cooperative, Inc.
History
The original A.I. cooperatives that were the predecessors
of today’s Genex were formed in 1939 and 1940. In 1993,
Cooperative Resources International was created, and in 1996,
the A.I. subsidiaries merged and became Genex. Today, national
membership provides opportunities for the 700,000 beef and
70,000 dairy producers in the U.S. to enjoy the benefits of
membership and furnish intellectual input to the cooperative.
What Do Members Gain?
Members enjoy the cooperative benefits of sharing profits and
building equity. Members have a voice and a vote. At any time,
members can have dialogue with cooperative leadership and have
their questions answered and concerns addressed. Members
elect delegates to vote on all major cooperative decisions and
By Dave Hileman,
President, Genex Board of Directors
elect their directors. They are kept informed
about the cooperative by newsletters, Horizons
magazine and member and delegate meetings.
At Genex gatherings, members can network
with people from other geographical regions.
Information sharing and the exchange of
knowledge that takes place can improve members’ business
operations. Never to be underestimated is the importance of the
strong friendships that are developed.
My Perspective
A member-controlled cooperative led by engaged and involved
delegates, a strong board of directors and a skilled, dedicated
management team all pulling together is a powerful business
model. I would encourage every producer to consider becoming
a member of Genex and CRI. ■
As you’re making breeding selections this spring, remember the Genex Influence Sales.
These sales are open to purebred and/or commercial bred females sired by or bred to Genex

facilities and incorporate all the expertise and experience of Genex
in the collection and processing of semen. The operation will be
managed by James Chenevert, in addition to his duties as manager
of Genex Custom Collection Services in Baton Rouge, La.
With the experience Genex has in the collection and management
of Brahman, Beefmaster and Brangus bulls, these breeds will be
a focus at the Texas facility. Anyone who has been around eared
breeds knows it takes experience to do well in semen collection! We
also expect South and Central American exports to be an important
aspect of our activities. We look forward to working with the cattle
breeders of Texas as we further enhance the cooperative’s superior
reputation for handling bulls, maximizing semen production and
producing a high quality product to meet the demands of today’s
beef industry.
The new facility will be a full service operation, providing custom
collection, health testing and domestic and international shipping.
Marketing services through the Genex Added Attractions program
will also be an option for bull owners. In addition, a Global Genetics
agreement with Trans Ova will make embryo transfers, in-vitro
fertilization and other services available from this location. Global
Genetics will continue its operation in goat collection, cloning and
production of biologicals in a separate part of the facility.
Genex operates the largest custom collection service in the U.S.,
with facilities in Baton Rouge, La., Fort Payne, Ala, Strafford, Mo.,
and Billings, Mont. ■
