Gold Wing Riders Association Indiana On Wings October 2016 www.IndianaOnWings.org Hello again from the Desk of the Director, Ray & Sandi Garris Director of GWRRA [email protected] Melissa Eason Chief Operating Officer 800.843.9460 [email protected] Lloyd & Becky Glydewell Region D Directors [email protected] Ray & Melinda Faber Indiana District Directors [email protected] Chuck & Chris Jacobs Indiana District Educator (812) 825-8950 [email protected] Craig & Joanie Isenhower Membership Enhancement (317) 696-8591 [email protected] The Fall season is at the door and many have plans to ride and see the colors. We are recovering from our journey to Wing Ding and home again. I am glad for all of those who returned safe and sound. My thoughts and prayers are with those who were not as fortunate to return home healthy. The journey to Wing Ding was enjoyable and eye opening as the hours and miles added up. You see motorcycling is therapy as you ride worries slip away and you begin to see the real world around you. Our time at Wing Ding was busy and rewarding. We were able to see the light show up close as we staged the parade and judged the contestants. The Grand Parade was quite an event and staging this event was our task. Another great opportunity for Region D. Indiana had a tremendous showing as well as Region D. Everywhere we went, we met members, from our great District and Region D. We found out the Wing World editor is from Clay county, Indiana the things you learn in a short conversation. We attended many events and were able to meet with members from districts we have yet to visit. I was asked a peculiar question after a seminar dealing with chapter problems. The man asked me “What keeps me volunteering, staying involved? At first I was stunned because I had never even thought about this myself. I was at a loss for words. To hear my answer, you will need to come to the Fall meeting or wait till the notes from the meeting comes out. In the meantime, ask yourself and your fellow officers, this question and share your answers with me. I would love to see your answers. Looking forward to seeing all of you at our winter activities for a little more fun and memories. Ride safe Ride long, Ray & Melinda Faber In. District Directors Indiana District Team Contact Information on last page The Region D & Indiana District Newsletter can be found at www.indianaonwings.org/newsletters.phtml Hello from the Southwest Section of Indiana We can’t believe it is almost October. Hopefully in October and November there still will be a few good riding days left. Leaves are starting to change color soon. So if you will be able to go on a Ride it will look stunning. Pat & Gerda McKee Assistant District Directors It seems everybody who went to Billings had a great time. Thanks for sharing all the Pictures with us who had to stay home and work. Have a safe Halloween. Pat and Gerda McKee IN-SW ADD’s Indiana On Wings Page 2 This time of year, as summer begins to give way to fall, many of us plan some long distance rides. Whether its to Wing Ding, Wings over the smokes, or just to visit with friends and family. Now if your going to be gone for more that just a day or two, storage space becomes a concern. Trailers have been a popular solution to the problem for a very long time. When preparing your bike for the trip, remember the three P’s. Proper You, Proper Gear, and Proper equipment. Performing a pre ride T-CLOC on both your bike and trailer is a very good idea. Its like free insurance! Chuck & Chris Jacobs Indiana District Educators Loading your trailer is also a very important process. Be careful to load the weight evenly across the axle and take time to verify the tongue weight. The tongue weight should be kept to 10-20% of the total load. Also plan how you load the trailer and be careful that the load is packed so it does not slide or shift in transit. While on your travels, it’s a good idea to check your little travel buddy every time you stop. Check the ball to make sure its still secure, check the chains and tires. Spending those few extra minutes planning and then monitoring the trailer during the trip will go a long way in keeping you safe and on the road enjoying the ride and scenery. Chuck and Chris Jacobs Indiana District Ride Educators [email protected] Indiana On Wings Page 3 Hello all, First off let me apologize for not having an article for last month. Connie and I were getting ready for Wing Ding and I apparently let it slip my mind. Speaking of Wing Ding, what a great time we had. Billings put on a welcome party on Tuesday night and it was well attended by members. They closed down 2-3 blocks and provided a meal and music and had line dancing lessons. There was also an Ice Cream stand which is a must for Gold wingers. The weather was quite warm for most of the time with the only cool day being Saturday. There was a lot to do and see in and around Billings and the Wing Ding venue was very nice. Next year we will be in Grapevine Texas, so start planning now for what should be a very good time. I am sorry to say I do have some sad news, we are losing another chapter. Chapter H from Goshen, Indiana has filed paperwork to close their chapter. They started in 1983 and lasted 33 years. Their members plan to remain in GWRRA so we will at least see them around. My home chapter IN-O2 was a spin-off of chapter H when they grew too large. The chapter will be missed. Wolf & Connie Gless Assistant District Directors Fall is here and some of the best riding is upon us. As the days get cooler and the leaves change from green to many vibrant and beautiful colors, just riding in and around our immediate area is different and exciting. October and Indian Summer will bring warm and cool days to have a great day’s rid, ’’BUT’’ remember that those leaves on the road, wet or dry, can be dangerous to ride on, so be careful when you do ride. Enjoy these last days of riding as winter is just around the corner and as we know riding is all but done for about 5 months. Coming up will be the Fall Meeting and of course Winter Rendezvous, so start planning and be sure to keep the dates open for these events. That is all I have for this month, ride safe and ride often Wolfgang & Connie Gless Indiana On Wings Page 4 “THE BEST OF ALASKA” 7 NIGHTS JUNE 9, 2017 This special Alaska cruise is open all family and friends Alaska is breathtaking, a place where scenic wonders, such as massive glaciers roaring into the sea in the Inside Passage, are best viewed from the water. Sorry, still resting from a FANTASTIC month. From Wind Ding in Billings, to Huntington’s T2 Crank Off, to the Northern Indiana Fall Fest, September has been a jam packed month of GWRRA fun! Debbie and I love listening to all the stories of everyone’s travels and adventures. Northern Indiana had great turn out at Wing Ding and it is always a blast to see local folks 1000’s of miles away. Speaking of the Northern Indiana Fall Fest, what a TERRIFIC day! We had almost 100 folks join us for pizza, fixings, and a FULL table of desserts. We played bingo, gave away door prizes, and had great ride around some local lakes. I’ve gotten nothing but positive feedback from those who attended. Get your 2017 calendars out and close off these dates 17 and 18 February. Why you ask? It’s WINTER RENDEZVOUS! We’re in full planning mode and believe this year’s event is going to build on the tremendous success of the last couple of years. The venue is at the Clarion in Columbus again and the theme is Super Hero’s! There will be a full slate of activities sure to please everyone who attends. Keep your eyes peeled for more information! Rick and Debbie Warmels Assistant District Directors Until next month! Rick and Debbie Warmels NE ADD Indiana On Wings Page 6 Couple of the Year Experience What a journey! What a ride! What a HOOT this has been! We would like to express our gratitude for all the support that we have received for the past 3 years from our home Chapter OH-E2 (Rocks!) and the Districts of Ohio, Indiana and Michigan!! In fact, from all over Region D, we have received well wishes and good karma. From the folks at home, who’s positive “shout outs”, texts, emails, cards, and videos put smiles on our faces to those folks who were able to make the trek to Billings to give us awesome support and encouragement: WE SAY THANK YOU!!! We consider ourselves winners---- because we were involved in a once of a lifetime chance to participate in this GWRRA event! (Region Couples can only participate in the International Couple of the Year process one time). In the past 12 months, as we got to know the Region Couples from all over North America, we soon realized that all these folks were worthy of the selection. However, only one couple could be chosen to represent GWRRA as their International Ambassadors for this next year. We are proud to know them and call them our “Friends”…. Steve & Carolyn Cotton from Oklahoma in Region H !! We hope that future couples will consider the journey from Chapter Couple to the International Couple of the Year level. Where else might you spend an interesting week with Region couples throughout North America and the GWRRA Overseas Couple as we did this year with Alessandro & MariaRosa Boveri from Italy? Our 20162017 Region D Couple, Gary & Karen Ballou are turning their sights toward the ICOY selection process at Wing Ding 39 in Grapevine, Texas in 2017. Let’s all support them! At each level, the Fun increases and the Benefits grow. For us, our journey continues as we feel we are perpetual ambassadors for this organization that we volunteer for, support and believe in!! We along with many others went to Wing Ding. It was sooo much fun! Plan now for an exciting time in Grapevine, Texas. 40th Wing Ding 2017 1st of all we would like to thank all of those who took the extra day to go to The Couple of the Year Selection Process at Wing Ding. It was great to see all those from our District & Region supporting Chuck & Melanie Geggie. They did us proud. A new challenge to Region D was the light parade & the Grand parade. As expected Lloyd & Becky did an awesome job, & we were happy to help. You would never know it was their 1st time. We would like to personally thank all those “Hoosiers” who helped. Just being at Wing Ding gives you an excellent opportunity to meet people you would never get to see anywhere else. One of the special treats for us was to meet & talk with a couple from Israel. (NOT The International couple of the year who was from Israel, too) We apologize that we haven’t been able to get to as many chapters as we would like to. We are still continuing on our journey. We have enjoyed the Area Ride-Ins. Even in the rain everyone has FUN. We thank those who put it together & everyone who attended. It’s YOU THE MEMBERS that make our events the best they can be. We look forward to seeing everyone at the Officers meeting Nov12th. Everyone is welcome to come officer or not.
