We Love Our Curves Michael L. Walker, MD, FACS Younger looks are an injection away! Your face is the first thing people notice about you. When age begins to catch up with us, all too often our appearance doesn’t reflect how we feel on the inside. This is because, as we age, we lose collagen and begin to experience skin depression such as creases, wrinkles and folds. Before Maybe it’s time for a change . . . maybe it’s time for Sculptra. Maintain a youthful look with Sculptra, an inject able Poly-L-lactic acid that stimulates the production of your own collagen, increasing the volume of depressed areas over a fairly short time. The best part, unlike other treatments, it can last up to 2 years. Photos Courtesy of Dr. Danny Vleggaar Sculptra restores your youthful appearance with natural-looking and long-lasting results! There are many options when it comes to reducing the visible signs of aging—but there is nothing quite like Sculptra. Referred to by some physicians as a “Face lift in a bottle”, Sculptra represents a new and unique non-invasive option that helps facial skin naturally regain a more youthful and natural-looking appearance. What is Sculptra? Derived from fruit acids, Sculptra is a biocompatible and biodegradable injectable material known as polyL-lactic acid that naturally stimulates the body to produce its own collagen. Michael L. Walker, MD, FACS The result is a fuller, smoother, more youthful and natural-looking face with less pronounced lines, creases, wrinkles and folds. Unlike traditional treatments, Sculptra can last up to 2 years! We supply traffic safety products to cities and counties across the Southwest. I am writing in response to the photo and its accompanying caption regarding the crosswalk, in the July-August issue. I was in attendance the day of the photo. I am the guy in the plaid shirt mentioned in the caption. While the humor intended with this is not completely lost on me (it drew a chuckle), I fear that taken at face value it will leave your readers, the citizens of Kerrville with a distorted view of the truth with respect to how their tax dollars are being spent. It is implied I believe, that it takes 17 city workers to paint one crosswalk in the City of Kerrville. One is only left to ponder what the enormous cost must be to taxpayers with such obvious governmental waste. The truth however, tells a different story. To begin with, of the 17 people mentioned, 7 of them were not city employees. I, as mentioned am with Centerline Supply. 2 of the guys in Safety Green are with Aexcel Paint. There are 3 guys from the City of Fredericksburg and 1 from Kerr County Road and Bridge. The reason for the big production? The City of Kerrville had purchased from my company a new product, Roadzilla, to put down on their crosswalks. This was undertaken by the City in an effort to increase the longevity and visibility of the crosswalks so as to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorist alike. Because this was a new product the city had no familiarity with, myself and the two gentlemen from Aexcel Corporation in Ohio, spent the day training and assisting with its application. Yes, this was done in the interest of commerce for sure. But it was also done with the best interest of the customer in mind, the city of Kerrville and it’s residents. The City of Fredericksburg and Kerr County Road And Bridge were invited to watch the application. Of the 10 remaining City workers who were there that morning as part of the training program, half were gone after a few hours. In closing let me say that I don’t believe that there was any kind of attempt on your part to sully the reputation of the workers involved. I believe it was meant to be taken lightly. Unfortunately, hard working men and women’s reputations can be tainted, albeit unintentionally by this type of “Drive-By” journalism. I hope you will look into the facts of this matter and set the record straight for the good of your readers, as well as for the good of the fine men and women who work for the City of Kerrville. Thank You, Rob Richardson Centerline Supply San Antonio 1731 South San Marcos #932 San Antonio, TX. 78207 Phone 210-224-4600 Editors Comment: Since we offer no awards or prizes for solving our “Riddle Of The Month,” we would like to thank Mr. Richardson for taking the time to submit the answer. Este A Taste Of Mexico A t my store, Texas, etc., located at the Inn of the Hills, I offer “Visitor Information” for hotel guests. At the top of the question list is “Where can we find real Mexican food?” . . . Since everyone has their own taste, it is always difficult to give a direct answer . . . No, I do not say, “Try Mexico.” With this challenge before me, I tried several restaurants which claim to serve “real” or “authentic” Mexican food. At El Sombrero de Jalisco, 303 Sidney Baker in Kerrville, I ordered one of the lunch specials . . . chile rellano, crispy taco and beans, along with fresh lemonade. The taco and beans were good, but the stuffed chile, piled high with melted cheese, was outstanding . . . and all for $5.95 plus drink. At Rita’s Famous Tacos, 209 Earl Garrett in Kerrville, I highly recommend the 6 carne guisada wrapped with some of the best handmade tortillas to be found anywhere. One is a meal in itself at only $2.00, but I had to have a second one. This tiny café is helping keep downtown Kerrville alive. At El Valle, on Junction Highway in Ingram, two people can have a Mexican feast with the Botana Plate at $17.99. It is a house specialty with chicken or beef fajitas on ponchos, quesadillas, guacamole and tortillas. The meal is outstanding and chances are you’ll be taking some home. Taqueria Jalisco, 2109 Junction Highway, you can enjoy one of my favorites--#18 on the menu is Carne al Pastor. Small pieces of pork, cooked in a special red sauce, served with charro beans, guacamole, pico de gallo, salad and homemade tortillas for only $6.99. This is a wonderful and very tasty meal. At Altos de Jalisco, 3155 Junction Highway, Ingram, the fajitas, beef, chicken or shrimp are served with sautéed onions, green peppers, guacamole, pico, rice, beans and salad. The prices range from 49.99 to $11.99. This is an excellent and filling meal. Homemade lemonade is kerrcountypeople.com served at most of the larger restaurants. Made with fresh squeezed limes, it is a cool, refreshing treat to complement a spicy Mexican meal. As you can see, it is not hard to find a true Touch of Mexico when dining in Kerr County. S electing the right Realtor® for a home purchase affects the whole spectrum of the home buying experience from the very beginning of the listings review to the move-in day. Many buyers have the frustrating experience of dealing with a Realtor® who wastes their time by showing them homes that only vaguely resemble what they want, or that are out of their budget. Look for a Realtor® who takes a genuine interest in you and your family. Obviously, an agent needs to find out how many children you have; but if your children are grown, a good agent will find out how close they live and how much time they spend with you in order to help you figure out how many bedrooms and how much recreational space you need to consider. A Realtor® who asks about your hobbies and your social activities is not being nosy. She’s gathering information useful to identify the listings to present to you that will fit your entertaining and workspace needs. If your Realtor® has been paying attention to your conversations, most of the list of homes she presents to you for your review should be a close match for your selection criteria. When your Realtor® presents you with a list of homes for consideration, there is one other aspect you need to consider: Is your Realtor® only showing you homes listed by her and her company, or is she showing you homes listed by other companies as well? Realtors® typically make a higher commission from homes listed by their own company, so logic dictates that if she is doing this, she is more interested in her commission than he is in finding you the right home. Another indication of this is when she is consistently showing you homes that are over your budget. 9 kerrcountypeople.com If your Realtor® is asking a lot of questions about your lifestyle, your family, and your interests, chances are you’ve got someone who is looking after your best interests...and that’s a match made in heaven. T he Ache, the Pain, the Agony, the Stab, the Misery. Whatever you call it, Chronic Pain is a central figure in your everyday life. It follows you to the supermarket, to church, to bed. You barter with it, argue with it, live in utter fear of it. And the more you fight back, the bolder it becomes. If you’re suffering from chronic pain, you probably know this feeling, the feeling that you are trapped, always at war with the pain. Experts can’t find the source, coping is ineffective, and friends and family may even begin to doubt you. You may even have your own doubts, wondering if somehow you’re bringing it upon yourself. Hypnotherapy offers a different way. Hypnosis is the quickest and easiest way to work with the subconscious, conditioned mind, the source of the suffering. The seemingly impossible becomes possible — you will learn to communicate with the pain, control the pain, and change the 10 subconscious thoughts and beliefs that perpetuate the pain. Pain is just a message, a message that it is intended to help. When your body is in danger, pain communicates the need to slow down, rest, and tend to the injury. Without pain, you would leave your hand on the stove, keep running on the broken leg — the damage to the body would be much worse than if there were no pain at all. The experience of just that signal, pure pain, is not ‘unbearable’. If this has not been your experience of pain, you’re not alone. We often experience a great deal of pain more than just the pure pain signal. This extra pain is created by conditioned fear, and is an entirely distinct experience from pain itself, although we nearly always experience the two together. Using hypnosis, we can learn to control the pain, accessing the pain-blocking abilities of the brain (60 times more powerful than any external drug!). But even more importantly, we can learn to separate conditioned fear from the pain itself. William Ray and his colleagues at Pennsylvania State University have found through EEG studies that hypnosis can remove the emotional experience of pain. When the subconscious, conditioned fear is removed, the body stops creating new pain receptors at the site, and the auxiliary nerves in the area dissipate. Without the conditioned, subconscious emotions, the pain signal is free to go. Hypnotherapy’s pioneering approach to pain management is now being taught and practiced in medical schools and other medical settings across America. To find out how hypnotherapy can specifically serve your needs, ask your doctor, mental health professional, or contact your local hypnotherapist. Strains, sprains, and other injuries are accompanied by swelling. Any time you have pain there will be some sort of swelling. When you’re sick you have swelling, too. If you can reduce swelling, you will feel better. To decrease swelling, many people turn to anti-inflammatories or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The most common antiinflammatories purchased over the counter are ibuprofen (including Advil, Motrin, and Nuprin) and naprocin (Aleve). Stronger anti-inflammatory drugs are available by prescription. However, anti-inflammatories have drawbacks. They can cause stomach bleeding, which can lead to ulcers. Heart problems and strokes have been associated with prescription strength Vioxx and Celebrex. Because the liver filters the blood, it can be adversely affected by high doses of NSAIDs. People who never drank alcohol, but took high doses of NSAIDs and pain medication, have been known to die from cirrhosis of the liver. A safer way to prevent inflammation and promote health is to eat foods that contain enzymes—fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, nuts, and 22 plain unsweetened yogurt. Enzymes are bimolecules that speed up chemical reactions (catalyze). Almost all enzymes are proteins. Every cellular reaction that occurs in your body is due to enzymatic reactions. Unfortunately, many of the foods we eat actually exacerbate inflammation in the body. Refined carbohydrates in the form of sugar and flour are the worst offenders. Donuts, cookies, sugar-coated cereal, pasta, and most snack foods fall into this category. How you prepare your food is important, too. Enzymes are very sensitive. They are destroyed when food is cooked at temperatures above 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Freezing also alters enzymes. C o n s e q u e n t l y, most food that has been canned, frozen, dried, radiated, or pasteurized––any natural food that has been tampered with––is depleted of enzymes. Enzyme supplements can augment your diet and help fight inflammation naturally. So can Xango (the active ingredikerrcountypeople.com ent is obtained from the mangosteen fruit) and omega 3 fatty acids. Eating the right foods and taking nutritional supplements that fight inflammation at the cellular level will not only decrease swelling and pain, but can help prevent disease as well. For optimum health, choose these instead of over-the-counter NSAIDs. Dr. Bilderback received his degree from Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, Oregon in 1985. All of this information has been handed down to me by my teachers, mostly Germaine Sitting Crow, a Dakota Elder and my Tanke (older sister). I am grateful for her patience and her deep caring for me. The information presented in this article provides another Way of looking at the world. It is not a better Way, only another Way. There are many Ways, many roads — the Buddha says there are 88,000 Ways to reach enlightenment. The Way that I am introducing in this article has to do with Spirit, not religion. This Way, that we are calling Enemy Way, is a Way of walking the good Red Road. This is the road of wisdom, love, and compassion. To walk the good Red Road is to choose to be a Warrior of Spirit. Warriors of Spirit work only on clearing their own selfindulgences and impurities, having nothing to say about anyone else or any other Way of being. A Spiritual Warrior goes to war only with her/his own Shadow side. A Spiritual Warrior is nonmilitant and apolitical. In Lakota/Dakota Medicine, it is seen that everyone has the right to choose his or her own Way. Any judgment of anyone else is only self-importance. To say “I know the truth,” or “I know the right way for others to behave,” is only the Shadow side expressing its ignorance. To think we know better than Spirit how things should be, or how people should behave, is self-importance. Self-importance can also be experienced as self-righteousness. In Enemy Way we look to our associates, families, co-workers, and all other two leggeds. We look at how we react to them. Are we reacting with Judgment of their actions, are we feeling sorry for their troubles, or are we afraid of what they might do, or do we think we know how they should be? Any time we react to what others do or The Enemy Way Byy Hal Robinson, Robinson Robinso R on, MRC say, anytime we experience someone else judging us and we react to it, we acknowledge that we are only looking in the mirror. If I judge someone else’s judgment of me, it is still Judgment; it is still Self-Importance. The key to learning this Way is to be honest with ourselves — ask; “Am I reacting?” “Do I feel an emotional charge?” “Do I want to avoid them or gossip about them?” It does require a great deal of personal integrity and honesty to admit that we react, to acknowledge the reaction and to take responsibility for it, rather than blam- If I find myself reacting to someone who is feeling sorry for himself, I look for my own self pity, I look for where I do the same thing that he is doing. Once I have found my own self-pity I begin to work on clearing that, having nothing to say to the other person about his self-pity. I cultivate Gratitude as the antidote to self-pity. A great blessing of this Way is that when we find our own self-pity, or self- judgment — we no longer react. We can be with anyone, without reacting, or judging, or feeling like a victim. This we call Freedom. Freedom is the ability to be in the world, with others, without reacting or being upset. The Spirit part of the good Red Road, and Enemy Way, is the knowledge that Spirit sends exactly the correct and perfect people to show us who we react to and when and how we react. Some people say that they always meet the same kind of people no matter where they go. These people say the same things always happen, perhaps they feel cursed or that they just have rotten luck. We consider these experiences a gift of Spirit in Enemy Way, opportunities to learn and to be free of repeating the same stuff over and over — the same arguments, the same outcomes. Following Enemy Way, whenever we react with judgment, fear, self-pity, or self-importance we honor and thank those people who touch that in us. We also get very quiet, not having much to say to anyone about how they are in the world — no blaming, no “poor me.” The ultimate gift of this Way is the quieting of the “internal dialogue.” The four voices in the mind — self-judgment, self-pity, self-importance and fear become still and silent at last. Peace is considered to be the highest value. My prayer is that this may be of use to my Relatives - Mitakuye oyasin - all are my Relations. The ultimate gift of this Way is the quieting of the “internal dialogue.” ing someone else for how we feel. Most of us were raised in a society that teaches us to believe that “others hurt my feelings.” In Enemy Way we learn to say “I react to so and so’s behavior,” or “I react to what so and so said, and I am responsible for my reaction.” Anytime we begin to believe that someone else has the power to hurt us, either by words or actions, we are giving away a great deal of our own personal power. We become “a leaf at the mercy of the wind.” Enemy Way intentionally looks for those people or situations that we react to — the ones who “push my buttons.” We look for patterns, we look for mirrors. For example: Hal Robinson received a Masters in Rehabilitation Counseling, 1972 at Shands Teaching Hospital, University of Florida; Certification as a Gestalt Psychotherapist through the combined program of the Gestalt Growth Center, Phoenix Arizona and the Los Angeles Gestalt Institute in December 1974. Hal has had much advanced training in NLP, Psychodrama, Meditation Techniques and continuing education in Indigenous Medicine with Elders in the Lakota/Dakota Community in South Dakota and Mexico with the Huichol. Enemy Way Training groups are available for teachers, parents and therapists. Hal is also available for private consultation. The new Medicare drug benefit took effect on January 1, 2006. During this process and annually thereafter, you may have been enrolled in a drug benefit plan that may affect the Medicare home health services you receive. You have many choices in Medicare drug plans. If you sign up with a Medicare Advantage Plan to get drug benefits, the services you receive from your local home health agency may no longer be covered. A Medicare Advantage Plan is different from regular Medicare and is often an HMO where your choice of doctors, hospitals, and home health agencies is limited. Certain people that have both Medicare and Medicaid may be automatically enrolled in an HMO. If you are one of those people, you have the right to choose whether you want to go back to regular Medicare or stay with an HMO. If you chose to sign up with a Medicare HMO, you have the right to change back to traditional Medicare. You should check to see if you have been enrolled in one of these plans. Enrollment in a Medicare Advantage plan or HMO for Medicare drug coverage can affect your home health services and your choice of physician and hospital. It can lead to your home health care services ending or you being charged for the cost of home health services the HMO says are not covered. It is important to your health care providers when you enroll in any Medicare drug plan as it may change your benefits for home health services, your choice of physician or your ability to be admitted to a local hospital. Will I still be able to receive services from my home health agency? Is my home health agency a provider? Will I still be able to see my local physician? Is my physician a provider under the new plan? Will I still be able to use my local hospital? Is my local hospital a provider under the new plan? If the answer to any of these questions is “no”, you should talk to your health care providers first before signing anything. If the insurance agent says “yes” to any of the above questions, you should ask for proof of such in writing before you make the change. Only you can protect your rights and access to the health care providers of your choice. Ask questions first to ensure that you get to make your health care choices rather than the insurance company. Physicians benefit by having help with common health issues, which can free them to do the things that require a doctor’s attention. An appointment with a mid-level provider is usually quicker and if a patient requires the expertise of a doctor, then a referral is made. Practice guidelines provide a frame of reference for care and these are reviewed and updated annually with the consulting physician. Many clients comment that their PA or NP has more time to listen and teach them about health issues. Often they are the only health care provider a healthy person ever needs to visit. R esearch shows that exercise and weight management will allow us to avoid disease and live longer, better quality lives. Surprisingly, not much is required of us to receive these benefits. A British study followed 20,000 men and women for 11 years. Researchers looked at the influence of four behaviors—physical activity, moderate alcohol consumption, not smoking, and eating five servings of fruit or vegetables a day—on length of life. They concluded that people who follow these four healthy lifestyle behaviors live an average of 14 years longer than people with none of those behaviors. Of special interest to women is another study which revealed that women who lost at least 22 pounds since menopause had a 57% lower risk of breast cancer than those who didn’t lose weight. These are compelling reasons to follow the fantastic four habits which are pretty simple to follow: Most of us don’t smoke; moderate alcohol consumption is considered one drink a day for women 36 and two for men; and it’s easy to eat five servings of fruit or vegetables a day. Physical activity isn’t so difficult either. Most recommendations suggest at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week. Besides burning calories, you will have a strong heart, strong muscles, and flexible joints. It’s exciting to know that we have the power to influence the length and quality of our lives. Make it your personal responsibility to follow the fantastic four: don’t smoke, drink only in moderation, eat well, and exercise regularly. If you need to lose weight, start today. You can greatly improve the length and quality of your life. Sheryl, a former yo-yo dieter and non-exerciser, now believes in permanent results without permanent dieting. Prior to opening Curves of Kerrville in 2002, Sheryl completed Club Camp weight management and workout programs with Curves International and continues to stay abreast of the latest research and training regarding weight management, diet and exercise for women. kerrcountypeople.com Sept-Oct 08 Continued from page 17 hypertension, exercise can be risky. Do you do anything special for those women? Sheryl: These are hydraulic machines--as you push and pull, fluid runs through the hydraulic cylinders creating resistance. The faster you do the repetitions, the more resistance you create on the machine. The machines are designed specifically for women, and there is no time wasted adjusting weights set for the previous user. You can start at any point in the circuit. After 30 seconds, everyone moves from her machine or aerobic station. There is no waiting to get on a machine, and you stay in constant motion for the entire circuit. The complete circuit of machines and recovery stations will exercise all of the major muscle groups and provide an aerobic workout. As your stamina builds, speed on the machine increases so you get as much out of the machine as you put into it. Members utilizing the new Curves Smart® technology have a personalized workout designed just for them, providing moment-to-moment feedback, and a computerized report after every workout. This report tells the member how many calories she has burned as well as how effectively she exercised each muscle group. Sheryl: Everyone who joins Curves® fills out a Personal Information and Health History form, and we go over the information very carefully. We do require that some women have a note from their doctor saying that it is permissible for them to use the machines. We are trained to look for health signs such as paleness, flushing or dizziness while the members are exercising. We are also trained in CPR; fortunately, we’ve not had to use it in 6 years. We have a blood pressure monitor which we encourage everyone to use. Also, we teach all of our members how to check their heart rate, along with the proper way to use the machines. Most of all, we try to stress the importance of progress, not perfection. Richard B. Kreider, PhD, FACSM (Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine), professor and chair of the Exercise and Sport Nutrition Lab in the Department of Health, Human Performance, and Recreation at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, leads a team of doctors who conduct all of the studies on the Curves® program. They have done extensive studies of the effects of the Curves® system on hip and waist size, body composition, metabolism, cardiovascular fitness, arm strength, cholesterol levels, blood sugar levels, body image, and even quality of life. The favorable results of these studies have shown a significant improvement in cardiovascular fitness, and sustainable weight loss in 10 weeks. This is also a program that’s been designed to be enjoyable for women, so dropout rates are very low. That’s less than $2 per day since many members come 5 days per week. If you give up your lunchtime Happy Meal, you can pay for the program, save a whole bunch of calories, and pocket the change! I tried out a couple of the machines just to get a feel for how they work. There is a quiet whoosh sound the hydraulics make as you push and pull on the levers, and the intensity of the sound increases (along with the resistance) the faster you move. I could definitely feel the effects in the muscle groups I was working. Thirty seconds seemed like a very short period of time to spend on a machine, but after the second machine it became apparent that two rounds on all 14 machines would be quite a workout. The Curves® organization has gone to great lengths to provide a comprehensive program geared to the busy schedule of the modern woman.
