he Annapolis Yacht Club is excited to announce that this year’s
annual Keels and Wheels is scheduled for September 18, 2010
10:00am to 3:00pm. Make plans now to attend this fun, family friendly
event! Last year featured an impressive turnout of over 70 antique, performance, vintage, and just plain cool cars, as well as 7 wooden and fiberglass boats of different sizes and propulsion systems.
There will be a DJ spinning tunes, and club fare food will be available.
Keels and Wheels is held in the main parking lot and the main dock of
the Annapolis Yacht Club. The proceeds from registration fees will be
donated to the Annapolis Yacht Club Foundation. Balloting will be open
in six categories from 10:30am to 2:00pm, with the winners announced at
2:30pm. AYC members and show participants will be eligible to vote.
Please note there is no rain date.
Past winners of Best in Show have included: Jaguar XK140; Audi R8;
S/V Elf, built in 1888; and a 1932 Buick, among others. If you like the
sound of exotic V-12s and V-8s then be sure and stop by the Ferrari corral. Mercedes and Porsche are well represented, with a nice green 356
showing up last year. American Muscle is always welcome, as we saw
last year with not one but two Superbirds in attendance. The British car
subjects, ever hardy, make every attempt to attend, despite the obvious
obstacles inherent in owning, well, a British car. AYC this year has made
special accommodations for our friends in the Triumph, MG, Healy, Jaguar, and Aston crowd by ensuring strategic placement of fire extinguishers, oil drip pans, and engine coolant at the English car station.
Keels and Wheels is real crowd pleaser, if you have not visited, come
on out, you will not be disappointed. (The AYC is one block from the
Annapolis downtown restaurants and shopping). If you have a car or boat
you would like to display, the entrance fee is $25.00 for members and
non members. All participants receive a commemorative dash plaque.
Due to space limitations, we a can only accommodate 84 cars and 12
boats. PLEASE REGISTER EARLY TO ENSURE YOUR SPOT!!!!! If
you have a cool car or boat you would like enter in the show, please visit
www.annapolisyc.com for an application. Bring the family and spend the
day- you’ll have a great time! Questions? Call Josh Mazur at 301-9968919 or Paul Verchinski at 410-997-3879-P.V.

It’s Showtime!
As I write this column, there are only 30 more days ‘til Concours. Are you being nice to your Jaguar? I know it’s hot in August to be out there with those
final repairs, those winning final touches on the interior and the paint. But then,
our Jaguars are hot cars.

NCJOC President
John Larson
Last year’s Concours d’Elegance was a memorable celebration of Jaguar excelNCJOC President
lence and style organized by our concours chairperson, Michelle Dawson, and
she has been working diligently for the past 12 months with her team to plan
and execute the NCJOC 46th annual Concours d’Elegance on September 5. This year marks the fifth
year of Michelle’s leadership of the NCJOC Concours d’Elegance, and it’s hard to pick out which
concours was “best,” a choice as unfair as picking the best rose in a beautiful bouquet. Thank you,
Michelle.
The year 2010 has been a celebration nation-wide and world-wide of the 75th year of Jaguar-branded
production automobiles. As part of the party, the exquisite new XJ model debuted at dealerships
throughout our nation’s capital area and across the US. And, the new XJ will be featured at our concours. Also this year, the world’s one and only XJ13 racing Jaguar from 1966 made an appearance at
the JCNA Annual General Meeting in March, and will be shown once again at the famous Pebble
Beach Concours d’Elegance in mid-August. Please join us with your Jaguar on September 5 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Jaguar cars.
One of the functions of JCNA is to maintain the regulations governing the officially-sanctioned concours events at which members compete for national honors. The concours rules committee has been
making a list and checking it twice. Some revisions and updates to the rules were approved at the
Annual General Meeting in March, and we urge you to visit the “JCNA.com” website to review the
rules pertaining to all cars and to your specific model. In the registration form prepared for this year,
our concours committee included a few of those guidelines to promote the clarity and efficiency of
procedures on concours day. Remember, all registrations must be mailed in advance. No day-ofshow registrations.
With those admonitions, I wish you an enjoyable August – shall we say, “Be nice to your Jaguar”
month. We’ll see you at the Concours d’Elegance.

AT THE TOP OF THE WORLD
Hi,
My son, Steven, and I just returned from a successful summit of
Mt Rainier. The snowline of the 14,410 foot mountain was down to
the base below the Paradise Inn. This was my fourth and Steven's
second climb and we haven't seen the snow line so far down before.
Our hike up to Camp Muir was snowy, cold, and windy. We slept 6
hours at Camp Muir and started the final 4000 feet ascent at 2 AM.
The summit attempts the previous two days were turned back due to
55 mile per hour winds at the top, but for us the weather at the top
turned calm, beautiful, and sunny. Enclosed is a picture of us at the
top. We are recovering from our soreness.

I
t is with great sadness that we report the passing of one
of the Club’s long time members, Nina Cullen,
died at her home in McLean, VA on July 11 following a
long illness.
Nina, together with her husband of 28 years, Charles
(Chic) Cullen, was an active participant in the Club’s
events since the mid 1980‘s. A mainstay at the Concours
registration desk for more years than we can remember,
Nina was especially active in organizing many of the
Club’s major annual motor tours.
Nina Lou King was born in Sacramento, California and
raised in San Diego. Residing in the Washington DC
area since 1982, Nina was Vice President of Sales and
Customer Support for the Richards Corporation, retiring
in 2007. Nina was also a long time board member of the
McLean Orchestra.
In addition to her husband, Nina Cullen is survived by
a sister and two brothers.

Hidden Dragoon
By John Larson
ce Rosner is a former Cold War warrior. If not exactly a heavily-armed cavalryman, he nevertheless projects the esprit and
panache of those CIA operatives who conducted the hidden conflicts
between the superpowers of the East and the West. Ace lost his right
arm on the European theater of battle in WWII but, while recovering
from his wounds, vowed a passion for pursuing life to the fullest. Part
of that passion involved buying the cars that he fancied – seemingly
all of them. His collection of over 45 cars in former years has now
dwindled to “only” about 25 cars representing choice models from the
1920’s to his newest acquisition of a 2010 Mercedes SLS AMG with
gull-wing doors. Members of NCJOC responded enthusiastically to
an invitation from the Capital Area Cobra Club to join them in a tour
of Ace Rosner’s collection on June 13.
A
Some of the NCJOC by 1969 XKE (Ace Rosner seated in center)
Ace had provided somewhat vague directions to his holdings in NW
Washington DC, the sort of broad hints you would expect from an
agent cautious in sharing a treasure site. Ultimately, we made our way
behind a large apartment building to the sub-basement garage level.
Ace is the dean of the apartment building, having lived there since
1951, so he maintains certain parking privileges. He welcomed us
cordially, wearing his signature cap and cravat.
There in the dim, dusty reaches of the lowest level we spied the exquisite 1950 Jaguar Mark V. A shroud was partially pulled back to reveal a discreet view of the gleaming, curvaceous fender line. As a
young boy making cross-country trips with my parents, I used to interpret facial expressions from the wonderfully-varied, chrome grills of
passing cars. The Mark V, winking one uncovered headlight, said
“Go ahead, try me!” Ace has said that he will provide us with a full
display of the Mark V at our Labor Day Concours.
Pres. John Larson and Publicity Chai, Michelle Dawson with Ace Roser.
A 1969 XKE roadster rested in one corner, ready to go to the show.
Ace’s unique Mark X convertible, specially prepared in Australia in
provide Queen Elizabeth with a suitably open car, sat in front of a
1947 Lincoln continental. The Lincoln’s wide grill announced, “I was
the best in my day.” Crowded cheek by jowl with the Lincoln was a
1920 Ford stake truck in showroom condition. The never-married
Ace also kept a 1956 Bentley in his menage of mechanical mistresses.
This collection is not the fabled “barn find,” but an ever rarer
“museum find.” The chief groomer who assists Ace in this stable,
Jaime Steve, assured us that all of Ace’s cars are in running order.
Furthermore, his cars are fitted with steering knobs so that Ace can
better negotiate turns of the sort that he practiced in his youthful days
of auto racing. Ace must own the world’s only 2010 Mercedes SLS
AMG with a custom-build steering knob.
We departed Ace’s glorious grotto with a renewed respect for his fine
taste in automobiles, his enthusiasm in maintaining, displaying and
driving his treasures, and with a resolve to purchase the very next lottery ticket. – JL

our 46th Annual Concours d’Elegance is only a little over a month
away.
Our final two Judges’ Seminars are coming up. Saturday, July
17, 2010 is our third seminar which will be held at our July NCJOC
Picnic at the home of Nora and John Masters at 3255 Roscommon
Drive, in Glenelg, Maryland. The final Judges’ Seminar is
scheduled for Saturday, August 28 at the home of our Chief Judge,
Doug Sherwood, at 5800 Griffith Road, Gaithersburg, MD 20882.
These Judges’ Seminars are excellent opportunities for everyone
to hone their skills in detailing their cars for the Concours.
Additionally, the seminars help seasoned judges, as well as newly
crowned judges, learn the ins and outs of judging cars in the
Concours in less than 15 minutes. At these two remaining seminars,
you will have an opportunity to review the forms, inspect beautiful
Jaguars, and ask questions to fine tune your judging acumen!
The Judges’ test is a fun event where we crowd around the table
and answer the test questions en mass! Some of our discussions are
quite interesting and extremely informative. Jaguar owners are not
only in love with their exotic cars but are deeply passionate about
sharing their fond appreciation of the marvels of authenticity and
cleanliness with the other members taking the test.

200 pages of everything you ever wanted to know about a Concours
and competing in a Concours with your Jaguar. This rule book is
written for all Jaguar enthusiasts, as well as new and seasoned
judges. Each chapter is written for a specific audience. Chapter II
and IV are for entrants outlining the rules of eligibility, divisions and
classes, and covering the definitions of responsibility and
showmanship. Chapters III and VI are judging guides to Jaguar
evaluation. Following these guidelines will ensure that the judging
teams deal fairly and knowledgeably with the Jaguars. This
compilation for judging our JCNA sanctioned event has evolved
over the last several decades. Although not perfect, these rules have
paved the course for owners of Jaguar seeking the ultimate in
originality, authenticity and cleanliness. You will find this tome on
the JCNA website, , and then hit the Concours section to find a
plethora of valuable information about all things “Concours.”
Hope to see you at one of these remaining Judges’ Seminars!

An Owner’s Perspective
The New XF Jaguar
By Dave Hofstadter
very 40 years Jaguar makes me a new car. I love my ’69 E-type.
But Diane has been commenting that some newer Jags have air
conditioning, power steering, sound systems, GPS and other things.
She said I could keep the E-type, but we should look at a new daily
driver. Off we went to the Oklahoma City Jag showroom. I was interested in a used XJ so we hopped into one. I slid into the back seat
to marvel at the spaciousness. Diane and Mr. Salesman were in the
front cockpit. Her gaze landed on a car in the showroom she had
never seen before. She asked Mr. Salesman, “What’s that?” Pulling
her sleeve, he replied, “Come with me.”
So there I was, sitting in the back seat of a lovely XJ, watching
my wife and Mr. Salesman sitting in a first-on–the-lot-Jaguar XF.
She was attracted to the color—pearl grey with charcoal and American walnut interior. Mr. Salesman knew his trade. By the time I
strolled over, Diane had been shown the heated seats (her favorite),
the like-your-are-there sound system, air conditioning with separate
controls for driver, passenger and rear compartments and vents that
open and close automatically, and the do-everything touch screen. To
my mind, things were going quite well in the front cockpit, so I crept
into the rear compartment and found it rather comfortable. I kept my
mouth shut, but there was this big grin. We left with the XF and
never looked back.
Now, the E-type earns her keep in shows and slaloms, so the XF
had to earn her place in the stable as well. I maintain showing a
fresh-from-the-showroom car is not much of a challenge, but nonetheless I took her to an all-British show in Tulsa right away. First in
class. The judges liked the leaper on the bonnet. The save-you-fromyourself safety bunch in the European Union has banned deadly bonnet ornaments from Jaguars, Mercedes-Benz’ etc. But Jaguar offers
the bonnet leaper as a (Concours legal) dealer option. Ya’ gotta love
the Coventry attitude. Have the dealer install it. The process of
penetrating the aluminum bonnet is not for amateurs. Special tools
are required.
Next, the Tulsa JCNA club held a sanctioned slalom. You need to
de-select the Dynamic Stability Control, select Sport mode and use
the paddle shifters on the steering wheel. She heels over more than
the E-type but the low profile Continentals grip like glue. First in
class again. The paddles shift up or down much faster than any manual gearbox.
A word about low profile tires. You can get 18”, 19” or 20” diameter alloy wheels on the XF. The bigger the wheel diameter the

British Car Day
By John Larson
ver 300 British cars sallied forth to the 33rd annual Original
British Car Day at the Lilypons Garden in Montgomery County
on June 6. The morning was balmy but a bit humid, the kind of atmosphere that hints of thundershowers. The Cats from Coventry
joined their kith and kin from elsewhere in the British Isles in that
venue's unusual panoply of graceful, sleek, sporty and just plain odd
British cars. About 20 Jaguars, spanning 6 decades of production,
joined in the festivities, while a live band performed the hits of yesteryear. NCJOC stalwarts, Bob and Betty Andrews, had set up the club
canopies and banner the previous day.
As the crowd swelled, the clouds welled. The announcer relayed a
forecast about the approaching weather front, and by 12:45 PM a tornado warning was posted for the area. Many prudent drivers departed
early with due caution for potential hail damage to their costly prizes.
Nevertheless, about 70 cars remained through the final awards, including a unique squad of three "Woodie" models braced against the
oncoming rain -- a 1952 Land Rover, a 1966 Morris Minor 1000, and
a 1969 Morris Mini Minor. Club member Jake Kreeger was caught
with his top down. On the other hand, his fine XK120 has no top.
The rain squall passed quickly, but the experience of old cars, new
friends and continuing camaraderie lingers.

Original un-restored 1973 MGBGT with factory overdrive. Purchased in
1997 from Overseas Imports Ltd. Falls Church, VA and maintained by them
ever since. It is the last chrome bumper year. The overdrive works on 3rd and
4th gear essentially giving a 6 speed box. The OD reduces RPM by about 500
and makes for relaxed high speed cruising. The car’s general condition is
excellent considering its age. It is driven several times a week and it can make
an great daily driver or serve as the foundation for a restoration. The car has a
total of 120,000 miles. Recent maintenance includes: * Current May 2010
Virginia Safety Inspection. * New Brake and Clutch Master Cylinders -2010.
* New Clutch - 2009. * Oil, Filter & Lube, May 2010.

lower the sidewall, providing less side give on the track. But since the
wheel rim is lower to the ground, I find myself scraping the curb with
the alloy rim (ouch) when parking, where with the fat tires on our SUV
only the tire would hit the curb. (OK, I need to learn to park…)
For 2011 the XF comes in four levels: XF, Premium, Supercharged
and XFR and the price range is wide—$53,000-$80,000. The top levels have quite a bit of luxury such as voice operated controls. For 2011
the displacement and power is up on all levels. All Jags now have the
five liter V8 ranging from 385 to 510 hp.
The BMW 5-series, Mercedes-Benz E Class and Lexus GS 460 are
generally in the class with the XF. Motor Trend ranked the XF first in
this group. It is in Car and Driver’s “10 Best,” and the Washington
Post calls it “motorized art.”
We have the 300 hp 2009 XF level which started at $51,000 before
options. We find the car very comfortable and roomy for a sport sedan,
including the back seat. Great power, fun to shift and typical hit-asnowbank Jaguar brakes. I can attest that she easily hits and stops
straight-on from the legally governed 135 mph limit. I get 24 mpg
commuting. In two years there have been three minor recalls and a
passenger door lock malfunction. Not bad for a first year model.
I work at Ft. Belvoir. Twice a week, on average, some guard at the
gate will complement me on the car. That big grin is still there.
