Summer Reading 2016 - Mendon-Upton Regional School District
Summer Reading 2016
Mendon-Upton
Regional Schools
Students
Entering
Grade 2
Creating a school-wide culture of reading has always been a priority
for the teachers, librarians, and staff members in the Mendon-Upton
Regional Schools. In each school, that reading culture is built and
nurtured in numerous ways: through the study of literary elements,
read-alouds, book talks, literature circles, and author visits.
Summer is a perfect time to find books to read for pleasure. This list is
a starting point to help students select books that match their interests
and includes a variety of titles across many genres, levels, and lengths.
Our goal is to develop readers who not only can read, but who choose
to read for enjoyment.
Summer reading is also a great opportunity to enhance reading skills
and maintain fluency. According to a recent report from John
Hopkins University’s Center for Summer Learning, children who do
not read over the summer actually lose ground in reading proficiency.
The report concludes that the effect of reading 4-5 books during the
summer is large enough to prevent a decline in reading scores from
spring to fall.
We look forward to hearing about our students’ summer reading
favorites! Be sure to check out your local libraries in Mendon and
Upton for further suggestions and a wealth of additional titles.

Summer Reading Expectations: Grade 2
Students entering Grade 2 are expected to read “just right” books or be read to. To keep track of your
reading progress, post the reading log chart on your refrigerator. List the titles and authors of the books
you have read or that someone reads to you. Star (*) the ones you would recommend to a friend! Bring this
list to your teacher during the first week of September. We are eager to hear about your favorite summer
reading! The following pages offer suggested readings and authors. They are only suggestions and
students are not expected to read every book on the list. Exploring other titles and topics is encouraged.

Finding a Book That’s Right For You!
While reading this summer, don’t forget to choose a
book that’s just right for you! Read the back of the
book or inside the front cover to find out what the
book is about. Turn to a page in the book and use
the Five Finger Rule.
Five Finger Rule
Open the book to any page and start reading. Every
time you read a word you don’t know, hold up one
finger. After reading a whole page, use the
guidelines below to find out if the book is too easy,
too hard or just right for you.

RazKids: Students should still have access to their RazKids accounts throughout the summer. This is a
great way to have students read for 20 min a day in a format they enjoy. http://www.raz-kids.com/
